Gio now officially a free agent as the Yanks let the 48 hour window close. I thought they might do something like send either Holder or Green to Scranton and bring Gio up as a long reliever/spot starter. They obviously either did not like what they saw of him or didn't feel like dishing out 300 K per start. Somebody will sign him and we will see if the Yanks got this right or wrong.
Meanwhile Brad Miller gets signed to a minor league deal. Your basic anonymous middle IFer, but a warm body, which is enough to qualify these days as a position player. How in the world did this guy hit 30 HRs for TB in 2016? His next highest total is 11.
Wait, don't answer that question.

They may not have liked his six ERA in the minors.

The decision has little to do with him and a lot to do with how CC and German have looked since they signed Gio. Good decision to sign him and good decision to let him walk now

Even though Green has certainly earned his demotion, I thought they would try to let him work it out in the big leagues. I guess they figured they wouldn't be involved in enough blowouts to let that happen.
He appears to be healthy and could still be a contributor later this season. Let's hope he can pull things together.

Let's hope he can pull things together. I’m not a pitching coach but you don’t have to be to see how awful his mechanics are right now. I just don’t see how you can allow him near a major league game. He’s always thrown across his body but he’s doing it now a different way with each pitch so it is no wonder he can’t command his pitches. It is a miracle he hasn’t been injured. Hopefully they can get him right at Scranton. When he’s right he’s effective.

Chad Green sent to Triple A:
I feel bad for Joe Harvey, who has out pitched both Green and Tarpley but is stuck back in Scranton.

I don't know if any of you guys saw the article in The Ringer (I can't link to it), but it laid out just how unprecedented this flood of Yankee injuries actually is. When Judge went on the IL, the Yankees had by far the highest WAR value of players injured at one time since records were kept on this -- admittedly only back to 2002. The Yankees on the IL, pre-Sanchez return today, had a total WAR value of 32.8. The second highest number ever belonged to the Nationals in I believe August of 2015 at 21.1. At that time they were missing Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Adam Eaton, Trea Turner and a few others. But still not close to the Yankees misery index.
Somewhat to my surprise, there have been several times when teams had a higher number of players on the DL/IL -- the Dodgers and Athletics in August 2016 each had 16, and the Rangers at some point in 2014 also had 16. But the value of the players who were missing did not approach that of the Yankees. Also, no team ever had this many out at one time in April; as you would suspect, most high-injury totals occur later in the year.
An awful lot of credit to the scrubs who are keeping the Yankees in the chase. I'm not sure how often a fully-healthy Yankee team would win the first two games in Anaheim. This level of performance from this lineup can't last very long, but it's fun while it's happening. No other team could sustain this level of injuries and remain competitive, even against the crappy teams the Yanks have been playing.

He’ll get another chance, probably sooner than later. Green may be down for awhile, trying to find that once electric life on his fastball.
