Spring and Season Outlook / 3B
Logically, DJLM should win the 3B job this season. It appears as though the season will start another way. If Donaldson can rally to a .240, 20 HR season, he may retain the job.
There’s little to separate the two defensively, but if I had to pick one to play the spot defensively, I’d probably still play Donaldson. There’s more to the game than glove work, however. DJ is younger and more likely to bounce back to be a .300 hitter, and could reach 20 HR himself, or close enough to it. He’s the single most legit lead off hitter on the roster, which admittedly isn’t saying much. There’s not a Rickey Henderson in sight.
The spot seems to be Donaldson’s to lose. I hate to root against him, no matter how unlikeable he is. I’d say the position is well covered, simply because with DJ as the back up plan, Boone will have a decision to make within a month of the start of the season. We even have IKF as a secondary back up if DJ succumbs to injury for a third straight season…

Its so obvious but Cashman and Cashman's puppet Boone can't let it go and don't understand the concept of sunk cost.

His only hope is if he can find an adjustment similar to the one Matt Carpenter made last year to shorten his swing. I think he’s too stubborn to change and maybe not bright enough to see he needs to… And by the way, I’m glad Carpenter is gone. I don’t think he can repeat the magic..

We could have used Carpenter's left handed bat. He would be worth the money just to give him another chance. Alas, I think he wanted more guaranteed playing time anytime so he went to the Padres.

I agree that we could use a left-handed bat with the performance that Carpenter served last year. Perhaps someone else will step up and give us that…

It’s a good question, it really is. A better question would be how many games/AB will he get? I like his quick hands. He’s stronger than he looks… This and he's the best defensive SS of all the infield candidates. I wouldn't flat tell Peraza that he's the starting SS, but I wouldn't have some open competition based on spring training results. The job would already be his.

I like this. Players will adjust and we'll have a crisper moving game.

German struck out Donaldson. Schmidt struck out Donaldson. Renfield struck out Donaldson. Inger struck out Donaldson. Noetsi struck out Donaldson. Boone stated he likes Donaldson's aggressiveness at the plate and thinks Donaldson's timing is close.
