Sorry guys, I took a trip to the beach at Asbury Park to visit some friends. Glad we got the win though! Thanks for holding it down in my absence. How is AP these days? I haven't been there in years, but it was really down on its luck back then. I'm guessing it's turned around if you're paying it a visit. Either that or you share my interest in towns that are more dead than alive. I remember going to Newark in the early 80s to watch a taping of "The Uncle Floyd Show." We got back to the car just as some misunderstood youths were attempting to break into it. Other than that we had a good time. I have a good friend that lives in Asbury Park. Its really on the up now. One of the better beach towns in NJ in my opinion. Good food, good beaches, not too crowded. Newark in the 80s? Boy thats brave. I only visit Newark as a PATH station or NE Corridor Train stop on my way to Hoboken or NYC.

Plus Southside Johnny and Asbury Jukes. For sure Newark was dicey in those days. But that's where the luxurious Channel 23 studios were located. Anything for Uncle Floyd.

Mostly Brazilian now, instead of Portuguese.

Sounds like I need to make a return trip because it's obviously changed for the better since I last visited. I'm taking a flight out of there in January so maybe I'll overnight and check it out.

We've been back there a couple times and it wasn't bad. Mostly Brazilian now, instead of Portuguese. Even in its worst days, it was obvious that Newark, like many old industrial cities, had a treasure trove of architecture and neighborhoods that just needed to be tended to. I can remember stopping off there in the 60s, before the terribly destructive riots, and seeing the crumbling Ruppert Stadium, which is where the Yankees AAA team, the Newark Bears, played in the 30s and 40s. The Bears of the late 30s are always ranked among the greatest minor league teams ever, with Charlie Keller and Joe Gordon and Spud Chandler winning the International League pennant by 25 1/2 games in 1937. Okay I looked it up and see that Ruppert Stadium was in the Ironbound area where your wife grew up. Does she remember it? Or for that matter Uncle Floyd? Also if memory serves The Four Seasons originated in Newark. That alone makes it hallowed ground.
