From MLB Rumors 1/19/2024 9:44 PM CDT The Angels are in agreement with reliever Robert Stephenson on a 3-year guarantee with an option for 2027, as 1st reported by @jolly_Olive (on X). Stephenson, a client of Apex Baseball, is guaranteed $33MM, reports Sam Blum of the Athletic. The deal is pending a physical. Los Angeles has a full 40-man roster, so they’ll need to make a corresponding move once the contract is finalized.
Now the top 3 MLB Relievers have been signed, pending the Neris-Yankees deal.

From NJ Com Yankees Yankees add utilityman who has shot at Opening Day roster spot Updated: Jan. 19, 2024, 10:27 p.m.|Published: Jan. 19, 2024, 4:37 p.m.
By Randy Miller | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com The Yankees addressed their outfield needs in a franchise-altering way trading for Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo and Trent Grisham. They filled their rotation vacancy by signing 2-time All-Star Marcus Stroman. They’ve been looking into signing a veteran free agent for a bullpen upgrade, perhaps Robert Stephenson or Hector Neris. Another area that’s been address very cheaply is utility infielder.
They added another possible replacement for infielder/outfielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s on Friday by claiming infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the Mets. The Yankees had freed up a 40-man roster spot for Castillo by designating offseason infielder pickup Jeter Downs for assignment.
Castillo, 26, will compete for a roster spot in spring training with infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Castillo, infielder Oswald Peraza and a veteran who was signed to a minor-league contract last month, Kevin Smith. There have been rumors the Yankees will adder a bigger name to be their utility infielder, perhaps a reunion with free agent Gio Urshela.
“I do think we have internal candidates ready to plug and play, but that doesn’t preclude us from being open minded as we are to what’s available that currently still exists on the marketplace on both ends, free agency or trade,” GM Brian Cashman said on Thursday.
Castillo is a former long-time Yankees farmhand who picked up some big-league experience the last 2 seasons playing 96 games for the Pirates in 2022 and 1 with the Diamondbacks last season. Castillo had just joined the Mets on Jan. 5th as a waiver claim after being DFA’d by Arizona and 2 weeks later is headed back to the Yankees.
A Barquisimeto, Venezuela native, Castillo spent most of his 1st 8 pro seasons in the New York Yankees organization. He was Yankees property from the time that he signed as an amateur free agent in July 2014 until July 2021, when he was traded to Pittsburgh with fellow infielder prospect Hoy Park for Reliever Clay Holmes. Castillo had spent most of last season putting up impressive numbers in Triple-A.
In 124 games with AAA Tucson, the right-handed hitter batted .313 with 33 doubles, 3 HRs, 72 RB1s, 97 walks, 79 strikeouts and 13 steals. He had started 62 games in left field, 29 at 2nd base, 23 at shortstop and 5 at 3rd base. His walks/strikeout percentage in Triple-A last season was a huge improvement from 2021, when he played 96 big-league games with the Pirates. While batting .205 with 11 HRs and 29 RBIs, he had 75 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Yankees’ Aaron Boone reveals where Juan Soto, Aaron Judge will bat in lineup Updated: Jan. 19, 2024, 5:24 p.m.|Published: Jan. 19, 2024, 4:07 p.m.
Aaron Boone is planning to use Aaron Judge as his No. 3 hitter this season, deploying Juan Soto in the No. 2 hole. By Max Goodman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
In less than 6 weeks, Yankees Manager Aaron Boone will submit his Opening Day lineup card, penciling in Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the same batting order for the 1st time. As for where the skipper is planning to deploy those 2 superstar bats, Boone has an early sense of the order he’ll use on March 28th in Houston and beyond. Boone revealed in an interview with Foul Territory on Friday afternoon that he is leaning more toward using Soto 2nd in the starting lineup with Judge hitting behind him in the No. 3 spot. Those 2 could flip places depending on who is hitting leadoff or cleaning up for the Yankees, a decision that’ll be made on a day-to-day basis.
“We’ll see how that kind of shakes out,” Boone said, chatting with ex-Yankees Todd Frazier and Erik Kratz as well as host Scott Braun. “I think you start with the idea that hopefully Judge and Soto are hitting back-to-back over 150 times this year.”
By using Soto 2nd and Judge 3rd, the Yankees would be able to maintain a lefty-righty progression from the top of their lineup down, leaning on the balance they’ve injected this winter. The expectation is that veteran DJ LeMahieu will occupy the leadoff spot, Boone said he’s excited about the way LeMahieu finished last season and the offseason that he’s had, while others are in play to slide in depending on pitching matchups, injuries and who has the hot hand.
“I’m hopeful that [DJ] gets back to being the player he was in the 2nd half where he’s getting on base a ton and can solve that leadoff spot for us and then roll everyone from there,” Boone said. “But obviously bringing [Alex] Verdugo over is a huge deal, he could hit in that spot. You could move Gleyber [Torres] up there if you wanted to. So I do feel like we have a lot of really good options.”
Boone has also spent some time this winter thinking through his outfield alignment. He’s previously made it known that he plans to use Judge predominantly in center field, a result of Soto’s poor defense and inability to handle the spacious left field at Yankee Stadium. That means Judge will need a couple days at designated hitter per week as well, a way to get stellar defender Trent Grisham (who was also acquired in the Soto trade) some playing time in centerfield. The manager reiterated those intentions on Friday, assuring that he has no concerns about Judge’s durability in center. He pointed out that all of Judge’s injuries have happened when he’s been in right and that his best and healthiest season came in 2022, when Judge played a career-high 78 games in center and won MVP.
Boone also added a new wrinkle to this year’s outfield carrousel.
“I’ve even talked to Judgey about playing a little bit of left field on a certain day when I want to get Grisham and him in the outfield, which he’s open to,” Boone said. All of this is subject to change, especially when otherworldly prospect Jasson Domínguez returns from Tommy John surgery at some point this summer, although the Yankees have no plans to rush the 20-year-old back from his elbow injury. “I love our depth, I do feel like we’re in a better position to absorb an injury that may come up,” Boone said.
Here are a few more takeaways from Boone’s chat with the folks on Foul Territory:
Raving about Rodón Asked about starter Carlos Rodón, Boone delivered another positive update on the left-hander, echoing what General Manager Brian Cashman mentioned during his Zoom call with reporters on Thursday. “I really feel like Carlos is one of those guys that’s had an outstanding winter,” Boone said. “He’s in great shape, he’s throwing the ball well, just delivery wise he looks good already.”
Rodón’s 1st season in pinstripes after signing his 6-year, $162 million contract with the Yankees was littered with injuries and poor production. Boone pointed out that Rodón was playing catchup all year in 2023 as a result of his arm and back injuries in spring training, if he can stay healthy, he’ll be in a better position to recapture his ace-like form.
“The biggest thing I want him to focus on is going to the post,” Boone said. “Focus on going out there and being able to post and doing what you need to do from a physical standpoint to be able to post and I truly believe that that’s the case. If he’s handling that, the results will follow over time. His stuff is simply too good. He’s too talented, as long as he’s taking care of all the other things that allow him to go out there every 5th or 6th day.”
Backtracking on bunting A comment from Owner Hal Steinbrenner from earlier this offseason was ridiculed by baseball fans and Boone believes that it was taken out of context. During his end-of-season presser in November, Steinbrenner said that the Yankees weren’t bunting enough and that it was something Boone wanted to place more of an emphasis on going forward.
Boone explained on Friday that he only wants the Yankees to be more comfortable with bunting in certain situations, like in extra innings. For instance, if the road team is unable to score in the top of the 10th inning, the home team shouldn’t shy away from bunting the automatic runner (and, in this case, winning run) over from 2nd base. “I don’t anticipate us bunting anymore,” Boone said. “Hopefully we have a handful of guys that it’s in their tool belt. Leading off an inning or you need a base runner, to be able to have that I think serves players well and I think opens a lot of things up, but I don’t see us doing a whole lot of bunting.”

Man i hope the neris deal isnt longer than 2 ywars This Hot Stove season, the prices for both starters and relievers has really gotten out of hand. Yet, Snell and Monty have not been signed yet. Clipper Monty is waiting on the rangers . But it shouldnt be surprising thst the pitching market is so crazy . Look at what guys like giolito , sevy got and a guy who hasnt thrown a pitch in mlb at all is getting 300 mill. And then a year ago look at the deal tailon got and what the mets gave their closer . Teams are starved for pitching these days . So yeah pitchers will get more expensive . What truly gets me is the years that relievers are getting and what injury prone pitchers like snell want .

Rangers (90 Wins) and Dbacks (84 Wins) were 18th and 20th respectively in team ERA last season ... Yankees were 10th despite losing Rodon, Nester and half their BP to injuries and without the addition of Stroman Rangers didnt have 1 SP reach 30 Starts and used 10 Different starters throughout the Season Dbacks used 14 SPs. They had 2 Solid Starting pitchers and the rest of the Rotations was a disaster Neither of these teams has a pitcher as good as Cole or a healthy Rodon Winning the World Series is all about making the postseason and getting hot at the right time ... Yankees will make the postseason if they can stay relatively healthy What is your reason for our recent failures? I dont consider making the playoffs a failure ... Only 1 Team wins the WS and it's usually the hottest team during the playoffs (See last season) Last year 2023 was clearly Injuries ... Previous years ... other teams (usually Houston), were the better or hotter team in the post season

It is like Ground Hog's day all over. Instead of going the extra mile to finish the team, we are once again in dumpster diving mode. I can almost predict what will happen as we get close to the season. During spring training one of our starters will come up with a sore arm, shoulder tightness or some similar form of injury and not be available until mid-May-June. Down a starter we will fill the gap with minor league pitchers on innings limits that at best give us 4 innings. By mid to late June the bullpen will be spent having to get 12 outs in most games. Holmes will at some point start blowing saves through his wildness and then at the trade deadline Cashman will give up viable assets to get a pitcher that turns out to be a bust. Sound familiar? I can't blame Cashman for not giving a $100 M deal to a guy who quit on his last team.... I didnt see many people saying the Yankees had to go out and get Hader prior to him signing with Houston. In Fact it was quite the opposite

Anything longer than 2 years is nuts Sign Peralta and let someone else spend the money on Neris. Agree with this ...Peralta has been very consistent with the Yankees with a sub 3 ERA every year for the past 3 seasons 2.82 overall with the Yankees He's younger the Neris and will probably cost a lot less

A full season of Judge, Rizzo and Soto will make a huge difference. I am worried about the rotation, I thought they should have added another starter.
