People are starting to warm up a bit to Austin Wells but here are a few stats to back up his play: In the last month, despite the Yankees' woeful record, Wells has hit .280 with a 1.029 OPS. His BABIP is only .257, which theoretically says he's still hitting into a bit of bad luck. For the 2024 season, he was being platooned significantly against LHP until Trevino went down. Although his power numbers aren't there against lefties, (7 HR against RHP and 0 against LHP), he has hit for a higher average and OBP against LHP. He's definitely taking his walks against lefties. All of the stats say that his catching is more than adequate, though he and Cole had some technical difficulties the other night. I'd like to see Wells get about 80% of the starts at catcher, even when Trevino comes back. I agree.

He seems like a hard worker and there is no doubt he has improved his defense from the guy that scouts said may need to change positions. From time to time I take a look at some of his advanced stats. 2024 has been a mixed year. His exit velocity is down, but only slightly from 89.5 to 88%. His hard hit rate has dropped from 42% to 35%. His K number has moved up from 18.7 to 19.7, but that is still below league average. His walk rate is up from 4% to 13.8 % and this has been really noticable to me. He's pulling the ball more 32.2 up from 24.6. Hitting about the same percentage to the opposite field but less balls up the middle. He's a good base runner for a catcher. I think his positives outweigh the negatives and if he continues working hard will only get better.

We are in a bad spot here. The Yankee's logo prints money. Fans will always go to the stadium. Hal looks at Cashman as a family member. The Yankee philosophy has become it's better to be very good for a sustained period than great. They will spend to stay very good but not go the extra to be great.

From MLB Rumors
Yankees Designate J. D. Davis For Assignment By Nick Deeds | July 28, 2024 at 3:57pm CDT MLB Rumors
The Yankees announced this afternoon that they’ve activated INF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr., after acquiring him from the Marlins yesterday. Chisholm will take the place of INF J.D. Davis on the active roster, as the club designated him for assignment today to make room for their new acquisition. The Yankees’ 40-man roster now stands at 39.
Davis, 31, was acquired by the Yankees in a trade with the Oakland A’s late last month. It’s been a tumultuous year for the slugger, as he kicked off 2024 by heading to an arbitration hearing with the Giants. Davis won that hearing but was controversially released by San Francisco after they signed Matt Chapman to play 3rd base instead. Davis wound up signing with the A’s just 2 weeks before the season began and managed to secure a guarantee of just $2.5MM from Oakland, a far cry from his previously-awarded arbitration salary even after factoring in the roughly $1.1MM in termination pay he received from San Francisco.
On the field, Davis performed decently for them with a 96 wRC+ in 39 games while splitting time between 1st base, 3rd base and DH but he eventually found himself on the outside looking in when he was DFA’d as the club opted to give more playing time at the hot corner to Abraham Toro and Tyler Nevin. A move to the Bronx seemed to suggest he could find more playing time going forward amid injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo, but haven’t turned out that way as he’s appeared in just 7 games with the club over the past month and has hit an anemic .105/.227/.158 in that limited playing time. Club Manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch) today that Stanton is expected to return to the lineup as soon as tomorrow, meaning even that limited playing time was likely to dry up for Davis in the coming days.
While Davis’s 2024 season has been a brutal one, prior to 2024 he’d been a consistently above-average hitter ever since first taking a regular role with the Mets back in 2019. In 5 seasons with the Mets and Giants between 2019 and 2023, Davis slashed a strong .268/.352/.443 with a 120 wRC+, flashed 20-HR power and walked at a 10.2% clip despite an elevated 27.2% strikeout rate. That type of production could be a useful addition to plenty of teams, particularly those in need of help at 1st or 3rd base. The Yankees will have 1 week to attempt to pass Davis through waivers, and if he goes unclaimed he would have the opportunity to elect free agency in favor of accepting an outright assignment. Of course, it’s possible that the club tries to put together a trade involving Davis prior to the upcoming trade deadline on Tuesday, and it seems likely they’ll wait to waive Davis until after the deadline in order to explore his market fully.

Cashman keeps raising the bar when it comes to stupid moves. Davis may be cooked, but his addition to the roster and subsequent immediate insertion as the clean up hitter after he had sat for ten days prior to his arrival was a tough hill to climb. Hope he finds a home and gets to play a more reasonable role somewhere….

New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies: Series Preview The Yankees travel to Philly for an interleague matchup against the best team in baseball. www.pinstripealley.com/2024/7/29/24208041/yankees-philadelphia-phillies-series-preview-probable-pitchers-gil-wheeler-cole-nola-cortes-sanchezFresh off consecutive wins at Fenway, the Yankees enter their final series before the Trade Deadline with a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team with the best record in the National League. The Yankees look on track to welcome back some power to the lineup in the form of Giancarlo Stanton, who has been out of the lineup since June 22nd with a hamstring injury. The addition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the return of Stanton helps lengthen a lineup that until the Boston series had struggled to find production beyond Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. While eyes will be on a fun interleague matchup in Philly, much of the focus will be on Yankees GM Brian Cashman as he navigates a battle against the clock by filling various holes on this Yankees roster by Tuesday’s deadline. As for the Phillies, a slump is a tough word to describe a team that is a World Series favorite, but a 4-9 record over their last 13 games—including four straight series losses—means the Yankees are facing them at the right time. The Bombers should not get too comfortable though, as the Phils still possess the best record in baseball and will parade three top-flight pitchers to face this Yankees lineup. The Phillies have also added to a strong bullpen with the addition of Angels closer Carlos Estévez. Bryce Harper continues to be a force in the Phillies lineup, hitting .288 with 24 home runs and a .950 OPS on the season, which would make him the NL MVP if Shohei Ohtani did not exist — DH restriction be damned. However, Harper has found himself in a rut, hitting just .200 across 13 games in July following a stint on the injured list with a hamstring strain. It is not surprising that the Phillies offense has been a bit stagnant without Harper’s usual production in the lineup. Trea Turner also missed time with a hamstring strain but has had a nice bounce-back season for the Phillies (in terms of overall numbers) despite only appearing in 65 games in 2024. His .332 average and .908 OPS was good enough to earn him his third career All-Star selection. Turner has hit 10 home runs in his last 20 games after only hitting three in his previous 45. There are some fun pitching matchups in this rumble, so we’ll take a look at the starters for the days ahead. Monday: Luis Gil vs. Zack Wheeler (6:40 pm ET) Luis Gil is starting to find his groove again, and it could not come at a better time for the Yankees. Over his last three starts, Gil has given up just three runs in 17.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 22 batters over that span while only walking two. Unfortunately, the Yankees were only 1-2 in those outings, spotlighting how things have been going for this team lately. Gil has changed his slider grip and dramatically increased his usage of that pitch —throwing it 35 percent of the time in July compared to 15 percent in June—and the results speak for themselves. As good as Gil has been, the Yankees will be matched up against one of the best pitchers in the National League this season, Zack Wheeler. A legitimate Cy Young Award candidate, Wheeler boasts a 2.55 ERA with 133 strikeouts across 123.2 innings pitched. Wheeler attacks the top of the zone with his mid-90s fastball, pounding righties in with his sinker and neutralizing lefties with his cutter. His fastball and sinker have similar velocity and release points, making it particularly difficult on right-handed batters. Tuesday: Gerrit Cole vs. Aaron Nola (6:40 pm ET) It has been an up-and-down season for Gerrit Cole since his return from injury. After back-to-back six-inning outings in which he struck out 15 and only surrendered two runs, Cole laid an egg in his last start against the Mets. Like many of his fellow Yankees starters, the long ball has been an issue. Cole has given up nine home runs in his seven starts this season, including seven(!) in two starts against the Mets. It does not get any easier for the Yankees, as expected when facing a World Series contender, when Aaron Nola takes the mound for the Phillies. Nola is 11-4 with a 3.44 ERA on the season, and over his last 13 starts he has given up more than three runs only twice. In his last start, the veteran righty went six strong, giving up one run and striking out six against Minnesota. Like Wheeler, he likes to throw his fastball up in the zone and then work his knuckle curve off of that. He throws his curve 32 percent of the time, which is the most used pitch in his arsenal. Wednesday: Nestor Cortes vs. Cristopher Sánchez (12:35 pm ET) Nestor Cortes’ struggles on the road showed up again against Boston this past weekend, as ugly outings continue to pile up for the Yankees lefty. Twenty-four hits and 15 runs over Cortes’ last three starts is not good enough, particularly when it comes in 13.1 innings of work. His ERA has now crept up to 4.13 on the season as the Yankees continue to look for pitching help heading into the deadline. Cristopher Sánchez pitched his way onto his first All-Star team this season and is currently sitting with a 3.05 ERA, rounding out a three-head monster in the Phillies rotation. Over his 20 starts and 115 innings pitched in 2024, Sánchez has only given up three home runs. He does so by inducing grounders at an elite rate with a sinker/changeup combination. His nearly 60-percent ground-ball rate is one of the tops in baseball. The Yankees have grounded into more double plays than anyone in baseball this season, which makes facing a pitcher like Sánchez worrisome for the Yankees lineup.

Bryan Hoch: Gleyber Torres is not thrilled by the idea of seeing time at 3B. "I'm a second baseman. I play second."
Yankeesource: Torres has had a big July with the bat. Defense is a problem and he could disappear next month but he’s been productive of late.

SSTN: Giancarlo Stanton is set to rejoin the Yankees on Monday in Philadelphia. A lot has been made of the fact that when he comes back, he can provide protection for Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. It was suggested by one of the readers that at very least, he could function as “a scarecrow”. In theory I agree with that, but if he is rusty and in one of his streaks where he can't make contact, he's not going to scare anyone.
