SSTN: Austin Wells had another big night and is doing well in the cleanup spot. If he keeps this up for the rest of the season, he could be in the conversation for Rookie of the Year, especially considering his very effective defense. Wells has done a great job over the past month or so and has greatly improved his standing on this team. He is now batting cleanup and doesn't look out of place there. He clearly deserves to be the starting catcher even after Jose Trevino returns from the IL. However, let's not kid ourselves. Wells has flourished because he is receiving regular playing time. Everyone knows that if Jose Trevino had not been injured, that never would have happened. Wells would still only be playing once in a while. Aaron Boone deserves no credit for the development of Austin Wells because prior to Trevino’s injury, Boone was stunting Wells’ growth. Boone has done this before with other young players.

SSTN: Aaron Judge is batting .314 with 37 home runs and 95 RBI. It is possible that he could enter August with 40 home runs and 100 RBI. Who remembers when people thought he was washed up in April?

To be fair, before the Trevino injury, Wells wasn’t hitting enough to warrant full time status…and Trevino mashed for a while…

Yankees Designate Jahmai Jones For Assignment By Darragh McDonald | July 29, 2024 at 1:53pm CDT
The Yankees have designated INF/OF Jahmai Jones for assignment, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post on X. It appears to be the corresponding move for DH Giancarlo Stanton’s return from the injured list. Jones, 26, was claimed by the Yankees in February. Out of options, he has lasted on the roster through roughly 2/3 of the season but didn’t get much playing time in his bench role. To this point, he has been sent to the plate 47 times, while appearing in 33 contests. He hit .238/.304/.381 while striking out in 34% of his trips to the plate, lining up defensively at 2nd base, 3rd base and the outfield corners.
Throughout the year, the Yankees have welcomed DJ LeMahieu back from the IL and acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr., bolstering their position player mix and nudging Jones off the roster. They will now have just over 24 hours to explore trade talks but might end up putting Jones on waivers. Jones may receive interest due to his previous prospect pedigree. He was a 2nd-round pick of the Angels back in 2015 and subsequently got some top 100 love but he hasn’t really had much of a chance to prove himself at the major league level. The Angels added him to their 40-man roster in November of 2019, but Jones has only appeared in 69 MLB games over the past 5 seasons, bouncing to the Orioles, Brewers and Yankees.
But his work in the minors has continued to be impressive. Over the 2021 to 2023 seasons, he drew walks in 15.2% of his plate appearances, only striking out 21.8% of the time. He slashed a combined .254/.378/.441 in those seasons for a 114 wRC+. He also stole 25 bases in that time in 34 tries. He exhausted his final option year in 2023, which is why the Yankees haven’t been able to send him down this year.
Between his solid Triple-A offense, his past prospect pedigree and his defensive versatility, it’s possible that some club may give him a chance for the final few months of the season, likely a rebuilding club that has playing time to offer. He came into 2024 with less than a year of service time, meaning he can be retained for 5 seasons beyond this 1 if things click for him.

Yankees Scratch Gerrit Cole With Body Fatigue, To Select Will Warren By Anthony Franco | July 30, 2024 at 2:59pm CDT
The Yankees scratched Gerrit Cole from tonight’s scheduled start against the Phillies due to general body fatigue. Well-regarded pitching prospect Will Warren is getting the call for a spot start in what’ll be his major league debut. The Yankees will need to select him onto the 40-man roster, which has 2 vacancies pending their deadline activity.
There’s no indication this is anything more than a day-to-day issue. Yet it’s at least worth monitoring after Cole missed the 1st half of the season with elbow inflammation. Cole has made 7 starts since being reinstated in the middle of June. He owns an uncharacteristic 5.40 ERA thanks largely to 9 HRs allowed. If the Yankees are at all concerned about Cole’s health, it could impact their approach to the deadline over the next 2 hours. They’ve already been tied to starting pitchers, including to Jack Flaherty at the top of the market. There are rumblings the Yankees could even add an impact starter like Flaherty and look to flip Nestor Cortes.
Warren, 25, is a former 8th-round pick who has developed into one of New York’s top prospects. He ranks 7th among Yankees farmhands at Baseball America. Warren’s arsenal is headlined by his mid-90s fastball and potential plus slider. He has a shot to be a mid-rotation starter. The Southeastern Louisiana product has started 20 times in Scranton. His 6.11 ERA is disappointing, but Warren has an impressive 27.1% strikeout rate against a manageable 8.2% walk percentage.

Projecting Yankees' bullpen after Brian Cashman's 2024 trade deadline, injury returns yanksgoyard.com/posts/projecting-yankees-bullpen-after-brian-cashman-2024-trade-deadline-injury-returns-01j44r0t289gClay Holmes Closer Mark Leiter Jr. Setup man Luke Weaver Fireman/Multi-Inning/High-Leverage Tommy Kahnle Hopefully With No Runners On Tim Hill Our New Favorite Lefty Nick Burdi Wildcard Flamethrower Ian Hamilton High-Leverage, Multi-Inning, Intimidator Scott Effross* No Idea What to Expect Nestor Cortes Jr. Another Lefty Who Can Eat Innings We can't omit Effross because there's been chatter of his return for quite some time now, but based on his performance at Triple-A, the Yankees might just let him finish out 2024 in the minors so he can get back on track after missing a ton of time with multiple injuries. Hence, the asterisk. Plus, it makes more sense to employ either Cortes or Luis Gil in the bullpen once Schmidt is back, because they're both up to speed and pitching decently. Also, Lou Trivino, JT Brubaker and Cody Poteet are making their way back from injuries. It's unclear when they might return (if at all), but one of the three could be thrust into the picture. Don't forget, this team is far from out of the woods with injuries — there are two more months of regular-season baseball. You know how it goes. The "best" version of the Yankees' bullpen still leaves a lot of be desired. That's what we learned from this exercise. So fans better hope a few of the injury returns possess a semblance of impact, or else it's going to remain a rollercoaster ride anytime Aaron Boone turns it over to his relievers.

How did the Trade Deadline shake up Power Rankings? www.mlb.com/orioles/news/mlb-power-rankings-after-2024-trade-deadline5. Yankees (previously: 4) Season high: 1 | Season low: 7 It’s fair to say that Jazz Chisholm Jr. has found a home in the Bronx. The ever-vaguely-disappointing player -- who always seems more like a star than his stats say he is -- has taken to pinstripes splendidly. He doesn’t just look like a fit: He looks like the missing piece after playing a key role in sweeping the Phillies this week.

NY Post | Dan Martin: Gerrit Cole got scratched last-minute from his scheduled start on Tuesday, but it’s looking like it’ll just be a blip on the radar. Pitching coach Matt Blake has Cole aiming for a Sunday return to the rotation, and the reigning Cy Young winner played catch on Wednesday with no issues popping up after experiencing some body fatigue. Cole’s one of those keys to salvaging the season, and his health is certainly something to monitor especially after he had to sit out the first few months of the year due to an elbow issue, but for now it looks like there’s nothing to see here.

Hard to believe. Bryan Hoch: No MLB team has more wins than the Yankees (65). This is truly remarkable considering how absolutely dreadful they were playing before last weekend. Just goes to show, MLB seems to be wide-open this year. There's been no dominant teams. Of course, both the Orioles & Dodgers upgraded significantly at the deadline, so we'll have to see how that plays out. I still think the rotation and bullpen (particularly closer) are major chinks in the Yankee armor. Hopefully some guys can pull it together for the stretch run & postseason.

Jeter Downs Signs With NPB’s Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks By Darragh McDonald | July 31, 2024 at 8:07pm CDT
Catching up on some news that was set aside during the trade deadline frenzy, the Yankees announced yesterday that INF Jeter Downs was released and signed with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
Downs, 26, wasn’t a Yankee for very long. He was claimed off waivers from the Nationals in December, with the Yankees then passing him through waivers unclaimed in January. He didn’t have the right to elect free agency at that time and has been in the Yankees’ system in a non-roster capacity since then.
He has been having a decent year at Triple-A. In 69 games for Scranton Wilkes-Barre, he hit 10 HRs and slashed .264/.360/.498 for a wRC+ of 117. He also stole 15 bases while bouncing between 2nd base, 3rd base and shortstop.
Despite those decent numbers, he never got called up to the majors even though the Yankees have had plenty of infield challenges. Players like Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera have had disappointing seasons so far and Jon Berti has been on the injured list for most of the year. But the club never felt compelled to call upon Downs and eventually acquired Jazz Chisholm from the Marlins and plugged him onto their roster. Since he was fairly blocked from getting any playing time in the Bronx, he will instead go overseas to see if this opportunity will work out for him.
Downs was once a top 100 prospect during his time in the Dodgers’ system, before being traded to the Red Sox in the now-infamous 2020 deal that sent Mookie Betts and David Price to Los Angeles. He struggled to live up to the hype in the subsequent seasons, hitting .200/.309/.365 in the minors over the 2021-2023 campaigns. He was only given brief looks in the majors, producing a line of .182/.260/.273 in 50 plate appearances. He went from the Red Sox to the Nationals on waivers in December of 2022 but then the Yankees got him off waivers a year later, as mentioned.
If he fares well in Japan, he could intrigue teams based his past. He hit .267/.359/.458 in the minors from 2017 to 2019, though mostly at the lower levels, with only 12 games above High-A in that time. But he has the former prospect pedigree and was performing well in Triple-A this year. A nice run with the Hawks could perhaps lead the way to a return to the majors down the line, especially since he’s still only 26 years old.
