SSTN: Aaron Judge has hit 298 career home runs. He has played 945 games. When he hits his 300th, he will become fastest to reach that mark. The current record holder is Ralph Kiner, who did it in 1,087 games. That will be a difference of well over 100 games.

SSTN: Because Chisholm is playing third base, DJ LeMahieu will now be at the very least, platooning with Ben Rice at first base. Rice has shown a lot of promise and seemed to be adjusting after pitchers initially adjusted to him. Now, he will see his playing time limited as LeMahieu will play against left-handers and right-handers with reverse splits. Soon, I’m sure LeMahieu will be playing against left-handers, right-handers with reverse splits, and just about anybody else because he is DJ LeMahieu. Again, the Yankees are choosing to rely on someone who is now unreliable.

EMS: The Yankees Are Getting Substantial Value From Mark Leiter Jr. Early Leiter has looked solid in his first four appearances for the Yankees, totaling four innings. He hosts a 2.25 ERA, including 11.25 strikeouts per nine, a 90% left-on base rate, and a 42.9% ground ball rate. For the most part, Leiter looks great, and the Yankees needed another high-leverage bullpen piece to lean on. When the Yankees needed him most against the Toronto Blue Jays in extra innings, he went 1.1 innings and struck out three batters over 22 pitches.
The 33-year-old veteran still has two more years left of control until he’s a free agent in 2027. By then, he may have hit an age wall, but the Yankees are keen on getting maximum value in the meantime. He ranks in the 89th percentile or better in chase rate, whiff rate, and strikeout rate. In addition, he has a 2.79 xERA and a .207 xBA allowed.

New York Post | Dan Martin: Juan Soto weighed in on Yankee opponents’ apparent strategy of giving Aaron Judge almost nothing to hit. “It sucks because you want him at the plate,’’ Soto said. “I’m doing my best to get him up and to see them pass him over really makes me mad.” Soto’s work this season has obviously not been the reason Judge has been walked so many times recently, and it’s a testament to Judge’s brilliance that teams still avoid him so much even with Soto already on base. Soto also spoke on his right hand, which he appeared to aggravate on a slide into second on Sunday, telling reporters that it wasn’t much to worry about.

Baseball Prospectus | Daniel R. Epstein: ($) The Yankees’ experiment with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base has been unconventional, with the club giving the natural middle infielder/center fielder barely a day to practice at the hot corner before starting him there. Yet Chisholm has acquitted himself well so far, making a number of difficult plays look pretty routine. It’s been an impressive transition, one that many players just as gifted as Chisholm may not have pulled off as gracefully.

New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels: Series Preview The Yankees will try to keep their winning run going as the Angels come to town. www.pinstripealley.com/2024/8/6/24213723/new-york-yankees-los-angeles-angels-series-preview-probable-pitchers-luis-gil-cortes-stromanTuesday: Luis Gil vs. Davis Daniel (7:05 pm ET) Ever since a talk with Luis Severino, Gil has looked a lot more like the early season version of himself. He posted a 3.33 ERA and a 3.39 FIP in July, as he struck out 33 batters in 27.1 innings. Prior to his slump, he put up one of his best starts of the season against the Angels back on May 29th, striking out nine while allowing one run in a career-high eight innings. While he debuted in 2023, Daniel is still very green at the MLB level, having thrown 34.1 innings across seven career outings. Four of those outings have been starts, all coming this year. In general, he hasn’t been excellent, although he is coming off a solid performance against the Rockies, holding them to one run in five innings. Plus, there’s always the “Yankees struggle against pitchers they face for the first time” thing that could rear its head. Wednesday: Nestor Cortes vs. Carson Fulmer (7:05 pm ET) Cortes’ home and road splits have been a big topic of conversation around him this year, but his last home start — against the Rays on July 20th — did not go well. Plus on the flip side, his last road start wasn’t too bad. He’ll look to bounce back from that Rays start against a team he had one of his better road starts against this season: holding LA to two runs in 5.1 innings back on May 28th. Fulmer has been fairly solid for the Angels so far this season, which he has spent most of in a long relief role. However in recent weeks, he’s been elevated into the rotation. In his four starts this season, the first of which was on July 14th, Fulmer has a 3.43 ERA and has held hitters to a .554 OPS. Despite having played in the majors for eight years now, the Yankees only have 1.1 innings of experience against him, which came in a relief outing when he was on the Orioles in 2020. Thursday: Marcus Stroman vs. Tyler Anderson (7:05 pm ET) The struggles continued for Stroman when he faced the Blue Jays last week. While for once, he wasn’t harmed by the home run ball, he was removed after 2.2 innings and seven runs. Since the start of June, he now has a 6.32 ERA and a 6.21 FIP. Anderson has been one of the bright spots for the Angels this year, leading the team in WAR according to Baseball Reference, as the 34-year old has a 3.05 ERA in 135.2 innings. That includes a fairly solid outing against the Yankees in May. He walked six that day, but the Yankees only managed one run off him in five innings.

CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: There aren’t many folks who can overshadow what Juan Soto is doing at the plate this year. Unfortunately for him, a 6-foot-7 behemoth named Aaron Judge hits in the lineup directly behind him and is the best hitter in baseball today. If it weren’t for Judge’s video game numbers, the focus would be on Soto, who’s having a career year at the perfect time as he’s set to hit free agency. Soto was already set for a huge and historic payday, but that he’s already matched his career best and there’s still seven weeks left in the season, it looks like Soto is just now entering his prime. Give him whatever he wants, Hal. If he wants the Knicks, you buy him the Knicks.

FanGraphs | Esteban Rivera: Ben Rice was a breath of fresh air when he first was called up and was simply mashing the ball. That he was doing it at first base, where the Yankees were getting almost no production from Anthony Rizzo prior to his injury and where Rice had only really started playing earlier this year in the minors was all the more impressive. Rice has cooled down a bit since his early debut hot streak, but when looking at Rice, it seems like he has the skillset and toolset to be a productive player. While he may never be a superstar-caliber player, he’s got great plate discipline and a natural ability to pull the ball. If he can make the adjustments to work through this slump, he can carve out a solid career.

New York Post | Joel Sherman: During the Yankees’ month-and-a-half long skid, they dealt with some injury issues. People got hurt, the depth got hurt, I got hurt, you got hurt ... we all got hurt. It wasn’t the reason for the skid, but it certainly didn’t help the situation. Well now reinforcements may potentially be on the way, and could affect the roster. Jose Trevino, Anthony Rizzo, Jon Berti, Clarke Schmidt, Cody Poteet, and Ian Hamilton all seem to be at different levels of “on their way back.” The good news is that this is usually a good problem to have; the bad news is that this is baseball and these questions usually end up answering themselves.

FROM MLB RUMORS 08/06/24
Yankees Release Duane Underwood Jr. By Steve Adams | August 6, 2024 at 11:11am CDT
The Yankees released right-hander Duane Underwood Jr., who’d been pitching for their Triple-A affiliate after signing a minor league deal in the offseason, per the transaction log at MiLB.com. He’s a free agent who can now sign with any club.
Underwood’s release comes despite generally solid results in Scranton. He’s pitched 38 2/3 innings for the AAA RailRiders, logging a 3.26 ERA with a 23.4% strikeout rate that’s slightly north of the big league average. The Yankees never game him a look in the big leagues this season, likely due in part to an unpalatable 14% walk rate that portends some regression in that otherwise sharp earned run average.
A 2nd-round pick by the Cubs back in 2012, the now 30-year-old Underwood has 3-plus years of big league service that have been accrued over parts of 6 seasons split evenly between the Cubs and Pirates. Underwood found some decent success with Pittsburgh from 2021-2022 and even worked his way into a leverage role with the ’22 Bucs. Over those 2 seasons, he tallied 130 innings of 4.36 ERA ball with a 21.1% strikeout rate, 9% walk rate, 45.7% ground-ball rate, 1 save and a 12 holds. He was arguably miscast as a setup man, but Underwood looked the part of a perfectly serviceable middle reliever at the very least.
The 2023 season marked a notable step back for the right-hander, however. Underwood pitched just 24 1/3 frames in the big leagues and was roughed up for a 5.18 ERA with glaring declines in his strikeout and walk rates. His average sinker fell from 95.3 mph in ’22 to 93.6 mph in ’23, and Underwood posted a career-low 14% strikeout rate against a career-worst 11% walk rate. Pittsburgh passed him through waivers last June. He became a minor league free agent at season’s end and signed with the Yankees.
On the whole, Underwood has 190 2/3 innings of 4.63 ERA ball under his belt in the majors. He’s set down 21.5% of his opponents on strikes and issued free passes at a 9% clip — both numbers right in line with the results he delivered for the 2021-2022 Pirates. He’s worked mostly in short relief with the Yankees organization, although Underwood does have 8 appearances in which he’s recorded between 4 and 6 outs over the past couple months. He could be an option for a team seeking some depth in the form of an experienced arm that’s comfortable working more than an inning per appearance.
