YANKS GO YARD: What's even more impressive is that Austin Wells just started finding his groove as he got more consistent playing time with Jose Trevino on the IL. Over the last month, Wells is hitting .342 with a .947 OPS. He has six homers and 23 RBI over his last 33 games.
There's only a month and a half left in the season, but it's quite possible Wells makes a notable push to catch Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser atop the Rookie of the Year leaderboard.

NJ.com | Jimmy Hascup: Luke Weaver has a lighthearted take on his transition to the bullpen: contrition. “I just wanted to apologize to all the relievers that have been on my team through the course of my career,” he said on Foul Territory, lamenting the many short starts he made that put his bullpen in a challenging spot. “I don’t think starters — unless they’ve done relieving — really realize how much of a backbone they are in keeping the game intact,” Weaver continued, explaining the new insights being a full-time reliever has given him.

The Athletic | Chris Kirschner: ($) In the wake of Juan Soto’s three-homer game, Kirschner details his preparation and opines on his singular mindset. He also discusses where Soto and Aaron Judge’s pairing ranks in the annals of baseball’s great lineup-mates. The Yankee captain refers to his teammate as, “the greatest hitter in the game,” while Soto takes a broader view, calling Judge, “the greatest hitter in the world.”

From MLB Rumors
Yankees Designate Enyel De Los Santos For Assignment By Darragh McDonald | August 14, 2024 at 4:00pm CDT
The Yankees announced today that INF Oswald Peraza and right-hander Will Warren have been recalled to the active roster. One spot was opened by INF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr. landing on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 1th3, with a left elbow sprain. That injury and Chisholm’s expected IL placement were both previously reported. The other roster spot was opened by right-hander Enyel De Los Santos being designated for assignment. Additionally, the Yanks added that righty Lou Trivino will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset.
It’s a very quick turnaround for De Los Santos, 28, who was just acquired prior to the deadline a couple of weeks ago. The Yankees sent OF Brandon Lockridge to the Padres in order to acquire De Los Santos and minor league pitcher Thomas Balboni.
It seems that the buyer’s remorse set in very quickly, as things didn’t go well for De Los Santos after swapping his Padre pinstripes for the Yankee variety. After the trade, he tossed 6 1/3 innings over 5 appearances, allowing 10 earned runs in that time. He struck out 5 opponents while walking 3 of them.
The Yankees were rained out on Friday and played a double-header on Saturday, meaning their 5 starters have each pitched in the past 4 days. They needed Warren to come up and make a spot start today, which required a corresponding move. The only member of their bullpen that can be optioned is Jake Cousins, who has a 2.25 ERA on the season. Rather than send Cousins down, they have decided to bump De Los Santos off the 40-man roster not too long after trading for him.
Since the deadline has now passed, the Yankees will have no choice but to put De Los Santos on waivers in the coming days. Although his results have clearly been poor since coming to the Bronx, it seems likely that some other club will look beyond that and put in a claim based on his previous work.
From the start of 2022 and up until the trade, the righty actually posted some strong numbers between the Guardians and Padres. He tossed 159 1/3 innings in that time with a 3.50 ERA, 26.4% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate.
Meaningful roster upgrades are difficult to come by at this post-deadline part of the calendar, so a club looking for bullpen reinforcements will probably put in a claim. That might not even need to be a contending club, as De Los Santos is making just $1.16MM this year and can be retained via arbitration for 2 additional seasons.
Waiver priority goes in reverse order of the standings, so the teams with the worst records will have 1st dibs. Even a team out of contention might take a shot on De Los Santos given those 2 extra years of control. But if they all pass, some club in a playoff race could benefit with a fresh arm that has had some success in recent seasons, Yankee tenure notwithstanding.
Cutting bait on De Los Santos will cut into the club’s bullpen depth, but they are about to backfill some of that with Trivino. The righty underwent Tommy John surgery in May of last year and missed all of the 2023 season. He hit free agency and the Yanks re-signed him on a 1-year deal with a $1.5MM guarantee and a $5MM club option for 2025, plus bonuses and escalators that kick in at 15 appearances this year.
Prior to this lengthy injury layoff, he put up some strong numbers. Most of that came with the Athletics, though he also came over to the Yankees at the 2022 deadline as part of the Frankie Montas trade. Overall, he has 284 2/3 innings under his belt with a 3.86 ERA. His 10.6% walk rate is a bit high but his 24.5% strikeout rate and 47.4% ground ball rate are both strong.

I hope Peraza has learned to hit a fastball. Gonna be interesting if he has. Chisholm has shown to be capable of taking over at 3B. Peraza has always been, primarily, a SS...I think it's safe to say he's a better glove there than Volpe...GG aside. I think it was always assumed Volpe would be moved to 2B...Peraza to SS. It'll be interesting to see how it all works out in '25.
Unless I'm mistaken, I think Peraza can't be sent to Triple A next season if he doesn't make the Yankees 26 man roster. If Peraza shows that he can be a good MLB hitter I think there's a chance the Yankees infield next season will be Jazz 3B, Peraza SS, Volpe 2B, DJ/OC 1B.
If the Mets sign Soto, I expect the Yankees to counter that by signing Alonzo. But if the Yankees don't re-sign Soto, I rather they sign Santander. With that said, in my opinion, re-signing Soto should be the Yankees top priority.

No. 300! Judge fastest to milestone, which follows ... intentional walk?! Captain's 3-0 blast comes after Soto's free pass: 'I was mad ...' 2:59 AM EDT Bryan Hoch@BryanHoch
CHICAGO -- Within the Yankees’ traveling party, there was no question that Aaron Judge would soon claim rights as the fastest player to reach 300 home runs in terms of both at-bats and games played, mere checkpoints as the captain continues on an express path toward greatness. Yet no one envisioned it coming quite like this. When Juan Soto received an intentional walk ahead of Judge, the move prompted bemused headshakes, followed by anticipation that history was in the making. Judge delivered, launching a Chad Kuhl sinker into the left-field bullpen to claim his milestone in the Bombers’ 10-2 victory over the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. “It’s a great achievement,” Judge said. “I’ve been in the game a little while now, I guess. We’ve still got a long way to go. I was hoping it would come in a win.”
Judge’s Major League-leading 43rd home run came in the 8th inning, a 3-run shot that put the Yankees up by 7n runs at the time. It came in Judge’s 955th career game, obliterating a MLB record previously held by Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner, who hit his 1st 300 home runs in 1,087 games. How high up the HR charts can Judge climb? Arguably even more impressively, Judge’s 300th HR came in his 3,431st at-bat; Judge got there 400 at-bats quicker than Babe Ruth, who hit his 300th HR in his 3,831st at-bat. Mark McGwire (3,837) and Kiner (3,883) had the next fastest paces in history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
“What Aaron is doing is among a select few in the history of the game,” said manager Aaron Boone. “You start talking about these kinds of seasons he’s having; he’s a great player, great leader, and I think everyone’s really pumped in there that he got it done.”
)thers to reach 300 HRs in notable amounts of games played have included: Ryan Howard (1,093), Juan González (1,096), Alex Rodriguez (1,117), Judge’s teammate Giancarlo Stanton (1,119), Harmon Killebrew (1,137), McGwire (1,148), Albert Pujols (1,165), Albert Belle (1,171) and Babe Ruth (1,173).
“Those are some guys that have done a lot of great things in this game,” Judge said. “You throw around a lot of those names to even people that don’t know baseball, and they know who they are. It’s a special group to be in. It’s just an honor to be in the same category as them, and mentioned in the same sentence.”
Not surprisingly, the intentional walk marked Soto’s 1st of the season, coming during a series in which he homered in 4 consecutive at-bats, including a 1st-inning blast off of Davis Martin. Seeing 1st base open after Alex Verdugo’s run-scoring double, White Sox interim Manager Grady Sizemore shrugged and opted to roll the dice. “It’s just pick your poison. I'm not trying to get to Judge,” Sizemore said. “I've got a base open. [Soto has] had 4 HRs on us. I guess there is no solution or easy way out of that jam. Soto has definitely been the hotter of those 2 bats, even though Judge has been hot, too.”
Only once in Judge’s career had there been an intentional walk ahead of him: on Aug. 31, 2016, when the Royals issued Chase Headley a free pass to set up a potential double play with Judge, then a rookie batting .196. Like the Michael Jordan meme from the “Last Dance” documentary series, Judge seemed to take it personally, admitting: “I was mad about the intentional walk.” “That was crazy. I didn’t believe it,” said Yankees catcher Austin Wells. “It didn’t work out too well.”
Juan Soto on Aaron Judge reaching 300 homers Added teammate Oswaldo Cabrera: “We know our Cap. We know in that moment, he’s going to be like, ‘OK, I’ve got this.’ It probably feels disrespectful for him. For that reason, it probably fired him up in that at-bat. You see what happened.”
Hustling Cabrera scores from second on sac fly, sparking Yanks' rally Kuhl tossed his first three pitches out of the strike zone, prompting some (including Soto at first base) to believe the White Sox were planning to walk Judge, too. “I don’t know what they were thinking,” Soto said. “I’m thinking, it’s 3-0, they’re going to bury a ball and throw it on the ground and walk him, too. They actually threw something close to the strike zone; I was really shocked.”
The 4th pitch sailed inside; Judge said he’d usually take a pitch in that situation, but the free pass had irked him. Judge pummeled it, ripping a Statcast-calculated 361-foot blast into the left-field bullpen, where it was retrieved by security.
Judge said he’d likely gift the ball to his wife, Samantha. He seemed most touched by his teammates' reactions, which he said was “the coolest part.”
“As I rounded 1st, I was kind of pointing to the bullpen. I saw those guys jumping around, dancing, which was pretty cool,” Judge said. “And then to come to home plate and I’ve got Marcus Stroman, the first guy out of the dugout. I’ve got [Anthony] Volpe out there. I’ve got all those guys out there. That means a lot.
“These guys grind with me every single day, and I know the hard work they put in. They see what I do. So that was pretty special."
Wells followed by greeting Steven Wilson with a HR. Like in Judge’s MLB debut, when he followed a Tyler Austin HR by going deep, Judge’s milestone included back-to-back blasts with an Austin.
“For him to achieve that, it’s just amazing,” Wells said. “He’s still so young in his career, so I’m excited to see what he continues to do.”
Though Soto said he didn’t realize in the moment that Judge’s homer represented a significant round number, he also envisions many, many more to come.
“I hope he breaks the HR record. Why not?” Soto said. “I think he's the guy who can literally break the record. He's been showing up all the time. I hope he has the health to do it. I'm going to enjoy this as much as I can, too.”

If Peraza shows that he can be a good MLB hitter I think there's a chance the Yankees infield next season will be Jazz 3B, Peraza SS, Volpe 2B, DJ/OC 1B.
It'd be tough to move a GG SS, but entirely possible if they keep Peraza. Cabrera has shown he can play anywhere in the IF, as well as corner OF spots. I like him as a super utility guy, but I'd be OK with him at 1B with DJ as a backup against LHP. Much will depend on whether Yanks have confidence to plug Rice in at 1B.

Thanks Bob, I forgot about Rice. My guess is that maybe the Yankees start off the 2025 season with Rice/DJ platooning at 1B with OC and Berti being the super utility players.

strange being better on the road than home It's very strange since the Yankees traditionally are dominate at Yankee Stadium. I haven't checked the stats, but it seems like our pitchers have had trouble with the long ball this season.

Is Wells' bat good enough to consider moving him to 1st ? He did play there a bit in college and guys who play 1st average an extra 70 pa or so over the course of a season. With Stanton on the roster the DH spot is set in cement. Rice is a great story but he has to hit better to start at a premiun position for offense.

IMO most MLB position players should be able to handle 1B. Not elite GG caliber, but good enough if they contribute offensively. So yeah, Wells should be able to handle it, but I also believe Rice will continue to improve. Also, if Spencer Jones hits, I see him as a possible 1B. He just "looks" like one to me...physically reminds me of a LH Richie Sexson.

From MLB Rumors 8/16/24
Yankees Select Tim Mayza By Darragh McDonald | August 16, 2024 at 2:35pm CDT
The Yankees announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Tim Mayza. They signed the lefty to a minor league deal after he was released by the Blue Jays last month. They had optioned Will Warren after Wednesday’s game and designated reliever Enyel De Los Santos earlier this week, meaning they already had a vacancy on both the active and 40-man rosters.
It’s been a strange year for Mayza, who had a strong run for the Jays before everything seemed to come off the rails this year. From 2017 to 2023, he made 317 appearances for the Jays, despite missing the 2020 season, while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In that stretch, he allowed 3.47 earned runs per 9 innings. He struck out 25.7% of batters faced, walked just 7.8% of opponents and got ground balls on 54.4% of balls in play. He racked up 4 saves and 77 holds in that period.
But here in 2024, his 35 appearances for the Jays were disastrous, leading to an 8.04 ERA. He surely wasn’t helped by a .367 batting average on balls in play or his 54.8% strand rate, but he also only struck out 13.2% of batters faced.
He was designated for assignment by the Jays at the end of June. Since he had passed 5 years of service time this year, he earned the right to reject an outright assignment while retaining his $3.59MM salary. The Jays skipped that formality and released him, leaving them on the hook for the rest of that money.
The Yankees signed him to a minor league deal and sent him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has since made 9 appearances for the RailRiders, allowing 2 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings. He has struck out 8 opponents against 3 walks.
That will get him another shot in the big leagues, giving Manager Aaron Boone a 2nd left-handed option alongside Tim Hill. Now that Mayza has more than 5 years of service, he can’t be optioned to the minors without his consent. But if he manages to stick around, he can be retained via arbitration for the 2025 season.
For now, it’s a fairly low-risk move, as the Yankees will only have to pay Mayza the prorated league minimum for any time spent on the roster. That amount will be subtracted from what the Jays pay, which will make a small dent in their competitive balance tax calculation. Last week, Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro said the Jays were just under the tax line but that the situation was “fluid”.
