Pinstripe Alley Top 100 Yankees: #9 Bill DickeyArguably the most underrated Yankee ever, Bill Dickey was the backbone of one of the most successful eras in franchise history.
I still struggle trying to decide if Dickey or Berra is the best the Yanks ever had. I lean toward Dickey when the numbers are put in perspective by era…

At some point, it's the apples vs oranges game in making comparisons between two great players playing in different eras. Dickey was unquestionably a great Yankee catcher for his era; Berra for his. It's a wash as to who was better -- and an irrelevant comparison, in my opinion. They both did great things differently and relative to the kind of pitching they had to face.

Neighbor of mine is Bill Dickey's nephew. Nice! Any cool stories he's told? No. He's actually the husband of one of my wife's friends. I guess the Dickey family is quite large...Bill apparently had many siblings, so I don't know where he fits in the family tree. I saw this display in a place called "Little Cooperstown" on the St. Petersburg Pier which has hundreds of signed baseballs...many Yankees.

Pinstripe Alley Top 100 Yankees: #10 Andy PettitteA homegrown talent with a left arm to envy, Pettitte offered both reliability and a knack for big playoff moments.
#10, WOW!! I love Andy, and think he was really good, but I am a little surprised he is so high. Not saying it is necessarily wrong, just surprising.

Neighbor of mine is Bill Dickey's nephew. When I first moved to Pueblo West I noticed that there was a Bill Dickey drive off of Pueblo Boulevard as you approach town. Apparently It was the name of a local politician. I was hoping for the “real” Bill Dickey…

If not, I guess Jack Dempsey will be the area's claim to fame.

The mafiosa playground is well up there too… Ever been to the Dempsey museum? It took me three tries because it’s only open when it’s open… 🤓

I just noticed they can lay claim to David Packard. And there’s William Wadsworth Hodgkinson. I have no idea what he did, but with a name like that, it had to be big… There’s a web site that rates fame. Packard got a 5/100 and Hodgy got a 2/100…

I do recall that HP was supposedly started in Packard's garage in Pueblo. Pueblo & Trinidad have well-established Italian immigrant history, including "mob" ties. I believe the Smaldone family in Denver originated and kept strong ties in Trinidad.

I believe the Smaldone family in Denver originated and kept strong ties in Trinidad. The story in Pueblo goes that to this day there are catacombs under the streets that mob families use to get around the city without being seen. Apparently the mob needed a place to go for vacations without the constant worry of daddy getting shot, so they established Pueblo as a neutral zone where they agreed to maintain peace…

I lean toward Dickey when the numbers are put in perspective by era… When I have asked longtime Yankee fans that saw them both play, including my Dad and Uncles, I got the same answer... "It's hard to say, they were both great players."

Andy was the modern era money pitcher same as the 1950-1960's Yankees HOF starter Whitey Ford. Clipper
