Roger Maris becoming a Yankee is one of my first memories as a little kid. I had two heroes...Roger and Mick. Was fortunate enough to meet Mickey a year before he passed. He autographed my copy of "All My Octobers"

I remember Don Larson being in the Giants bullpen in the early 60's. Stu Miller had 3 pitches! SLOW, SLOWER and slowest! How the game has changed. Remember "Spahn, Sain and Pray for Rain”. Sandy Koufax won 25 games his last year in the majors. Had arm problems that could have been fixed today. Imagine a pitcher winning even 20 games today! When I hear that Koufax “could have been fixed today”, I think of how we might not have ever seen his best couple of seasons while he was “in the shop” for the surgery and then had to recover. After having missed those seasons then who knows if he would have ever been the same after the repairs? Without those last couple years when he pitched in pain, he would have never been in the HOF. Sometimes revisionist history makes assumptions that are unlikely to be true…If only… Remember Stu Miller being blown off the pitching mound at Candlestick Park? Sandy Koufax had retired from MLB due to arthist in his left arm, there wasn't surgery for that. Clipper

He autographed my copy of "All My Octobers" That is wonderful, Bob. I got to cross paths with some Yankees from that era, but never Roger or Mick. One of the things I enjoyed about Judge's pursuit of the HR record was that it brought Roger back into public consciousness. He was an all-around outstanding athlete who got a raw deal from a lot of the NY media, but real Yankee fans from that era always loved him. A straight shooter and a solid family man.

To show how the game has changed, he had one year when he went 14-5 with the Giants and a few years later went 14-7 with the Orioles and didn't start a single game in either season! That 1964 Orioles team that gave the Yanks a tough run for most of the season had three slop-throwing but very effective bullpen guys in Miller, Dick Hall and Harvey Haddix. Gave the Yanks fits.

Koufax was just 30 years old his final season in MLB and won 27 games with a 1.73 ERA. I stand corrected. I was going by memory, not always a good thing at my age! Wait! You still have a memory? What are you going here? …

Shook his hand, told him what he meant to me...he was very humble. One of the special moments in my life I will always remember.

My 1st time to the original Yankee Stadium was on October 1, 1961. The Yankees were playing the Boston Red Sox for the final game of the 1961 AL season. I didn't see my favorite Yankees player in the game, Mickey Mantle was injured. What I did see Roger Maris hit #61 to win the game and make MLB history. We were not able to go on onto the playing field due the 1961 World Series against the Reds was starting on Tuesday. We sat in the left field bleachers. Yogi Berra played LF that day.
