Tyler Alexander starts for the Rays this afternoon. I gave his biographical/career information when he started against the Yanks 3 1/2 weeks ago, but I'll sum it up briefly: 2nd round draft pick of the Tigers in 2015, he pitched as both a starter and a reliever for them from 2019 through 2023, and the Rays selected him off waivers in November of last year. Because of multiple serious injuries to their starters, he got put in the Rays' rotation last month. In 3 relief appearances and 4 starts, he's 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA. In 32 2/3 innings, he's allowed 35 hits, 18 runs, all earned, 6 HR, 10 BB and has struck out 30. His WHIP so far is a subpar 1.378.
This is the 5th game he's pitched in vs. the Yanks and his 3rd start. He's pitched 13 1/3 innings, allowed 9 hits, 5 runs, 3 earned, 3 HR, 3 Bb and struck out 13. In the start in the Stadium last month, he shut the Yanks out for 5 1/3 innings on 2 hits and a BB, with 4 K's, but the Yanks a 5-run rally in the 7th aided by two Rays' errors and capped off by a 3 run HR by Soto, and went on to win, 5-3. The Yanks' team quadruple slash line against him is .184/.245/.367/.613
Repertoire: Alexander has changed his pitch mix somewhat since joining the Rays, throwing his fastball and cutter less and his slider more. He's a 4-pitch righty, averaging 89 on the FB and using it about 31% of the time. He also has a cutter at 84-5 and also throws it 31%, a slider at 77-8 about 21% of the time and a change 81-2 about 17% of the time.

Playing the name game...There are many MLB players with the first name Tyler, most of them recently, because the name has increased in popularity in recent decades. There are just eight MLB players in history with the last name Alexander, including career pinch-runner Matt Alexander (career totals: 111 hits and 103 stolen bases), Doyle Alexander, who came to the Yanks in a big mid-season trade and pitched for them in the AL pennant-winning season of 1976. He was forced to pitch game 1 of the World Series against the Reds after their pitching staff was drained in the 5-game ALCS win over the Royals. The most famous Alexander in big league history was Grover Cleveland Alexander, the Hall of Fame righty who won 373 games. He was on the mound pitching in relief in game 7 of the 1926 World Series, when Babe Ruth was unbelievably caught stealing as the final out of the Series, the day after throwing a complete game win for the Cards in game 6. Dey was men in dem der dose days...

The Yanks send hard throwing rookie Luis Gil to the mound against Alexander. Gil is walking fewer batters lately, but still leads the AL with 24. He's looking for his 3rd straight excellent start after throwing his two best games of the season back-to-back against two good lineups: the Orioles and the Astros. On the season, Gil is 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA. In 37 innings, he's allowed just 18 hits, 13 runs, 12 earned, 3 HR, and all those walks, while striking out 45.
This is Gil's 2nd appearance against the Rays. In the first one 3 weeks ago, he went 5 2/3 innings, giving up just 2 hits, 1 run (not earned), 3 BB and struck out 9. He got the win as the bullpen barely held on for a 5-4 victory. The Rays' team quadruple slash line against Gil is .105/.227/.158/.385.

Last night's scores and today's previews lead right into the The Sunday Standings™ (Before the start of play today, Sunday, May 5th):
I already gave the AL East standings in the division recap above; I'll get to the rest as we go along.
Alexander ready to go. Volpe fouls off a 1st pitch FB down in the zone.

Cutter in the zone low and away, drives it hard the other way, it slices but lands fair in the RF corner, Lowe just misses the catch and it kicks off the low wall away from him, Volpe never stops running and gets himself a leadoff triple.

Rays bring the infield in for Soto, who takes a strike. Cutter waist high, outer 3rd, hit hard to fairly deep center, easy catch for Siri, but he has no play on Volpe, who scores 1-0 Yanks on the sac fly by Soto.

Boy, I can't wait until DJ LeMahieu comes back and clogs up the base paths from the lead off spot.

Boy, I can't wait until DJ LeMahieu comes back and clogs up the base paths from the lead off spot. There's no way they give him the lead off spot back. Boone said he wouldn't a few weeks ago. I don't think anything's changed.
