we've just rounded the quarter pole of the season. and yes this exercise is meaningless because as john has told us many times ...
anyway, at this point on pace for 104 wins and that's with a team missing it's ace, a bullpen of no names and a team not hitting on all cylinders with a number of players struggling or getting off to slow starts. but help has come from the strangest of places like cabrera's and volpe's hot starts. and yeah the soto "effect" has trickled down through the lineup. paired w cole's return and with the captain "getting close", could better things be in store?
luis gil has literally exploded onto the scene. a team best 2.51 era and al league leading .144 baa. 7 of 8 starts w 3 runs or fewer. last 18.1 innings 5 hits and 1 run. hitters are just overmatched. and our new #2 (for the moment) - clarke schmidt. his 2.95 era is 2nd behind gil. yeah command elusive at times and has 6th inning issues but does seem to be making baby steps. what happens when cole returns? 6 man rotation?
and despite folks clamoring for a "legit" closer, holmes has settled nicely into that role w his best pitching since becoming a yankee. and the bullpen despite having the 2nd best era in the mb, still think needs reinforcements. had a bad week w a 6.00 era over last 6 games w a number of guys having poor outings. hopefully some help is on the way.
quarter season projections: soto 35 hr 131 rbi enough said
judge 39 hr 104 rbi after a horrific start
rizzo 27 hr 85 rbi has rebounded nicely from his concussion
stanton 31 hr 77 rbi any production is welcome. he's here. we're stuck w him.
volpe 19 hr 77 rbi .265 ba .350 obp still a work-in-progress but more lead-off hitter like
verdugo 19 hr 66 rbi great defense dawg
trevino 15 hr 54 rbi only half the games
the "mediocre" trevino has regained and surpassed the form of his 2022 1st half AS season. he's stealing strikes all over the place. in particular nurturing gil through his starts. overall .293 ba (2nd on team) and .794 ops (3rd on team). and that's after a 1-18 start. .368/.972 since, k'ing barely 5% of the time. puts the ball in play and good things happen. his .316 ba w risp is 2nd behind soto. he's bound for some correction but very good for now.
now onto the twins ...

Good post Bumper Schmidt also is turning himself into a legit option and Weaver who I thought was a camp body has been the biggest positive surprise on the roster.

Despite the good overall number from the pen, I also think they need one more reliable arm down there. Maybe it will Kahnle?
I think Judge is going to be huge for the rest of season and start carrying this team for stretches, like he's done in the past.
Is DJ ever coming back and what can they really expect from him? What's going to happen with Peraza and Dominquez? There's going to be more options soon.

I agree on Judge -- he had just about reached the limit of where I was starting to worry about him being in decline, but he ended that concern. Since DJ has missed a fair amount of time due to injuries for three straight years now (and his BA has declined for three straight years) I think he may be in that late-career Eric Chavez phase where you can get some decent production if he is handled carefully, but you can't count on him being a full-time player. And Gleyber almost has to pick it up to some degree, he isn't this bad, so there will probably be better things coming from him. Right? The Orioles aren't going away, but as Toronto continues to under-achieve and Boston and Tampa Bay just don't look as strong as the Yankees (although Boston has been missing a lot of starting position players long-term like Yoshida, Casas and Story) it's hard to imagine the Yanks won't at the very least make the post-season this year.

Gleyber is on his 2020/2021 pace so far, so who knows? But I feel like he may be Gallo'ed if he can't recover by the trading deadline. He hasn't just hurt the team with his bat, he's also an erratic base runner and error prone with the glove. The Dawg needs some credit/mention here. A solid 107 OPS+ so far. Vastly improved OF defense over what was being trotted out there last year (Calhoun and Bauers were two of the worst I've ever seen, especially Bauers). And he's been a great source of energy.

I forgot to mention Gleyber. Hopefully that big HR on Sunday gets him turned around at the plate, he's too young to not hit for the entire season. Or at least I hope he's too young.

I expect the Yankees to make a trade, either for a reliever or prospects. Trading Stanton would free up a roster space, but his contract doesn't start to get cheaper until 2026, 2027, when the Marlins pay $10 million towards his salary in each of those seasons. I think the Marlins also have to pay the $10 million buyout in 2028.

Gleyber isn't a .208 hitter, even with his flaws he's a pretty good player. I expect him to start hitting better. But in the MLB world of The Luxury Tax I think the Yankees are going to let him walk after this season, if they don't trade him before that. As I mentioned before the only way I don't see that happening is unless the Yankees don't re-sign Soto or unless they know that Soto is willing to sign a deferred contract similar to Ohtani's.

Torres' stats were better in the second half of the 2023 season. So maybe he's just off to a slow start?

Torres' stats were also better in the second half of the 2023 season. If you review his career he tends to have much better stats in one half than the other for some reason. He’d better hurry if he wants to have any kind of first half at all this year…

Bullpen help was mentioned earlier in this thread. The Marlins Tanner Scott is a free agent after this season so he might be available. Michael Kopech isn't a free agent until 2026, but I think the WSox would trade him for the right player(s).
