Chris Paddack starts tonight for the Twins. Drafted by the Marlins in the 8th round in 2015, he was traded to the Padres the next year while Paddack was still in A-ball. He came through their farm system and was in the Padres rotation in 2019. He had an excellent rookie season, 9-7 with a 3.33, but was injured and largely ineffective for parts of both the 2020 and 21 seasons. Early in the 2022 season, he was traded with reliever Emilio Pagan and a minor league for closer Taylor Rogers and outfield Brent Rooker. Paddack continued to be plagued by serious injuries in both 2022 and 2023, pitching just 37 innings combined between the major and minor leagues in those two seasons.
Finally healthy this spring, Paddack has been in the Twins rotation since Opening Day. In 7 starts, he's 4-1 with a 4.34 ERA. In 37 1/3 innings, allowed 48 hits, 18 runs, all earned, 6 HR, 8 BB and struck out 37. His WHIP so far this year is an unsightly 1.500. He's been a bit up and down, two so-so starts, two bad ones and three great starts, but he's been terrific in his last two starts, allowing just 1 run in his last 11 1/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking just 2 against the Red Sox and Mariners. It should be noted that he's been far better at home than on the road so far this season: 1-1 with a 9.42 ERA on the road, and 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA at home
This is just the 2nd time he's pitched against the Yanks. The first game was a poor 5 inning effort in his rookie season is 2019. He went 5 innings, gave up 6 hits, 4 runs, all earned, 3 HR, with 1 BB and 6 K. Suffice it to say, the Yankee lineup he faces tonight will be vastly different. Only Torres and LeMahieu remain from the lineup he faced. Stanton missed most of that season with two long stays on the IL, and Judge was in the middle of a two-month IL stint himself. In just 24 PA, the Yanks' quadruple slash line vs. Paddack is .286/.3338/.714/1.048. Doesn't really mean much, five years later.
Repertoire: Paddack was a 3 pitch righty when he faced the Yankees 5 years ago. This year, he's added a slider to give him four pitches, using his FB and curve a tiny bit less, and using his change about 1/4 less. He has a 94 FB that he uses 42% of the time, a change at 83 he uses 28%, the slider at 86-7 used about 17% and a curve 78-9 used about 13% of the time

Playing the name game...There far too many Chrises, Christys and Christophers in MLB history to name, but Chris is the one and only Paddack in MLB history. There has been one Paddock, and it isn't Charlie, the American Olympic sprinter first called "the fastest man alive" and portrayed by Dennis Christopher in the great movie Chariots of Fire. No, this Paddock was Del Paddock, an infielder who played less than 50 games for the White Sox and Yankees in his only MLB season, 1912.

The Yanks send Carlos Rodon out to face the Twins. Rodon continued his up-and-down season with a good start against the Astros at the Stadium last week, this coming after his worst start, the 5th inning knockout at Camden Yards by the O's. He's 3-2 in 8 starts with a 3.56 ERA. In 43 innings, he's allowed 40 hits, 18 runs, 17 earned, 7 HR, 14 BB and struck out 43. His WHIP so far this year is an acceptable 1.256.
This is Rodon's 13th career game and 12th start against the Twins. The W-L is good, 6-3, but the rest of it is mediocre: 4.62 ERA, 64 1/3 innings, 63 hits, 35 runs, 33 earned, 7 HR, 28 BB and 73 K's, with a WHIP of 1.415, He hasn't started against the Twins since 2022, when he made back to back starts against them in early July. In the first one at home, he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings while striking out 9 and walking in a no-decision (the White Sox won, 8-5.. He did much better in the return match in Minnesota five days later: 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 0 BB and 8 K for the win in a 4-1 final. The Twins' team quadruple slash line vs. Rodon is .261/.337/.407/.744

Yesterday, the other 4 AL East teams faced off against the other, and the Yanks got a small break in that the teams furthest behind them beat the teams right above and below them in the standings. In Baltimore, the Jays scored the winning run on an error by Jorge Mateo in the 10th, scoring ghost runner Cavan Biggio from 3rd with 1 out, and closer Jason Romano gave up a walk but prevented the powerful Orioles lineup from completing another comeback win. Jays won, 3-2 in 10 innings. In Fenway, the Rays and Red Sox exchanged 3-run rallies in the 1st, but while the Rays scored the go-ahead run in the 4th and an insurance run in the 8th, starter Zach Eflin and three relievers shut down the Sox on 5 hits over the last 8 innings and won 5-3.
The Yanks move back into a tie for first with the O's. Both teams are 12 games over, but the O's are still percentage points ahead, having played two games fewer than the Yanks. The Sox lost 1/2 game to the Yanks and now trail them by 5 1/2, but the Rays and Jays gained 1/2 game each, and are now 6 and 7 1/2 behind the Yanks, respectively.
....and that finishes the usual preview prattling for tonight's game.

Seems like they should have a good chance at taking the paddle to Paddack. And Rodon looked sharp in his last outing (until tiring late).
We'll see, but they seem well set up for a W.

As the Yanks get underway with the Twins, the Rays lead the Red Sox, 1-0 in the 2nd at Fenway. Jays and O's are in rain delay in Baltimore. They might not get that one in tonight.
Game 5 in Pacers vs. Knic will get underway in about an hour. I might be wrong, but I think the Knic long injury list is doing them in. I expect them to be far more competitive tonight than in game 4, but I think the Pacers will win.

Volpe... FB outside corner, thigh high, 0-1 Chases a FB above the zone in the middle, 0-2. About 2-3 inches too high Curve drops low, Volpe chases and spoils FB at the top, inner half, fouled back Curve bounced over home, Volpe starts, checks in time, 1-2 Fb same as the fourth pitch, spoiled again. FB at the top in the middle, swung under, K. Paddack wins the 7-pitch battle. FB about 93-4 so far.
