Stroman needs to break out of this little funk he's in.

guess you can call this our "A" lineup. we've won 8 of our last 10 with the offense showing some signs of life but pablo lopez is a tough RH coming off 2 excellent starts - 12.1 innings 9 hits 2 runs 18 Ks. on the other hand, over his last 6 starts, stroman has a 5.28 ERA and an ugly .925 OPS.

The Twins' ace, Pablo Lopez, starts tonight against the Yanks. Signed by the Mariners in 2012 as Latin American free agent at the age of 16, he was traded with three minor leaguers to the Marlins for ex-Yankees pitcher David Phelps. He pitched very well on his way up the Marlins' chain, but bothered by repeated injuries, he only had one season in which he made at least 20 starts. He made it to the majors at age 22 n 2018, and struggled his first two year s in the majors, 7-12 with an ERA of 4.76. In the COVID season on 2020, he made some progress, going 6-4 with a 3.61 ERA, the broke through as a top of the rotation starter in 2021. The W-L records don't show it; from 2021-2023 he was just 26-23, but had an ERA of 3.57, stuck out about 9.4 per 9, and K'd 4 batters for every one he walked.
He was good enough that after the 2022 season, the Marlins traded him to the Twins in the Luis Arraez trade. Arraez hit very well for the Marlins, winning the batting title, but Lopez became the Twins' ace., making the All-Star team and finishing 7th in the Cy Young voting.. The Marlins conceded defeat on the trade by turning around and trading Arraez to the Padres for a major league relievers and 3 decent prospects. Meanwhile the Twins got a very good outfield prospect from the Marlins along with Lopez, OF Bryan Chourio, the younger brother of Brewers uberprospect Jackson Chourio. Some lists already have Bryan as a top 100 prospect
This will be Lopez' 3rd career start against the Yanks. He's pitched well in both. In 2018, he held the Yanks to 1 run in 7 innings while striking out 4 but got a no-decision. Last year, in a game in at the Stadium in mid-April, he gave up 2 runs in 6 innings and struck out 7, but was outdueled by Gerrit Cole, who threw a complete game 2-hitters, walking 1 while striking out 10 in a 2-0 Yankees win. The Yanks' team quadruple slash line against Lopez is .286/.340/.367/.707.
Repertoire: Lopez is a 4-pitch righty. His pitch mix has hardly changed since he started throwing the slider last year instead of the cutter he used to throw. So far this season, he's throwing his FB a bit more, and his curve and change a tiny bit less, but again, this early, that could be random variances against a tiny set of opponents. Right now, he's throwing a 94-5 FB about 49% of the time,. a 84-5 slider 21% of the time, a 88-9 change about 19% of the time, and an 82 curve about 10% of the time.

Playing the name game...Way too many Lopez' in MLB history to list all of them, 36 in all. The best player among them might Javy Lopez, a catcher for the Braves, Red Sox and O's from 1992-2006. The only Hall of Famer among them so far is Al Lopez, who played 20 years as a brilliant defensive catcher for the Dodgers, Braves and Pirates from the late 20's to the late 40's, then went on to a 19-year career as a big league manager. He was the manager of the 1954 Indians team that set the AL record for wins with 111 (that got surpassed by the Yanks in 1998 and again by the Seattle Mariners a couple of years later). That Indians team was the only team to win an AL pennant besides the Yankees over the 10-year period from 1949 through 1958, but it got swept by the Giants in the Series that included maybe the greatest defensive play of all time: Willie Mays over the should catch on the dead run in deepest center field of the bat off the bat of the Indians Vic Werts. That play seemed to set the tone for everything that followed in the series. Lopez then went on to manage the next team that beat the Yanks out for the pennant: the 1959 White Sox who lost the Series in 6 games to the Dodgers.

The Yanks send a wobbly Marcus Stroman out to oppose Lopez. After two straight games of 6 innings without allowing an earned run to open the season, Stroman has struggled in his last 6 starts: 1-2 with an ERA of 5.28 and a WHIP of 1.728 with 7 HR allowed in 30 2/3 innings. His command has been especially poor, 19 BB in those 30 2/3 innings. He's battled hard, and not really been blown out in any of those starts, so just the 2 losses, but he'll have to improve his stuff and command to not be the odd man out of the rotation if Cole returns healthy.
This is Stroman's 7th career start against the Twins and the results have not been good: He's 1-4 with a 5.82 ERA. In 34 innings, he's allowed 42 hits, 23 runs, 22 earned, 5 HR, 8 BB and struck out just 22. He made just one start for the Cubs against the Twins in 2023, and it was bad one. In mid-May in Minnesota, he got knocked out of the game in the 3rd, allowing 7 hits and 6 runs in 2 2/3 innings, including a HR, and he took the L in a 16-3 loss. The Yanks hope he can do a lot better tonight, but the pitching matchup favors the Twins in this one. For those who indulge in such things, the online betting bookies make the Twins a roughly 6 1/2-7 1/2 betting favorite for this game.

Last night, the Yanks got 6 strong innings from Carlos Rodon, enough offense and some strong relief work to beat the Twins 5-1. In other AL East games, the Jays and Orioles got rained out, and the Sox pushed across a run in the 12th to top the Rays, 5-4.
The Yanks' win put them 13 games over .500 for the first time this season, and gave them solo possession of 1st for the first time since April 28th, just for a moment.
But the moment is gone, as the O's ended their rain-shortened 2 game series against the Jays by once again rallying in the 9th for two off of Jays' closer Jason Romano to win 3-2. Romano gave up a leadoff single to Jordan Westburg which was immediately followed by a 2 run walkoff HR from Adley Rutschman. This was a scheduled getaway day afternoon game, and the two teams opted not to turn it into a doubleheader. Last night's rainout will be made up on July 29th. If the Yanks win tonight, they'll move back into 1st by 1/2 game. If they lose, they'll drop 1/2 game behind the O's again.
The other game in the East tonight is a fine pitching matchup in the 3rd game in Fenway between the Rays and Red Sox, starting about 1/2 hour before the Yanks do: Taj Bradley, 0-1, 1.50 ERA for the Rays, Tanner Houck, 3-4, 2.24 ERA for the Sox.
And that wraps up the pre-game palaver for this evening.

Will be doing the HR pics for Kaybli tonight. Another thing to add to the Greenwich lore I found out Hideki Matsui's son plays on one of the local little league teams around here. Haven't seen him yet though.

I remember before being traded to the Twins, there were several rumors about the Yankees trying to deal for Lopez. One was Gleyber for Lopez and another was Volpe or Peraza or maybe both of them for Lopez.
