Afternoon game today that I will miss as they go for the McBroom. Maybe I'll catch a bit on the dots. Let's go Yankees!

The Twins will start Bailey Ober against the Yanks today. Drafted by the Twins in the 12th round in 2017, worked his way through the farm system quickly, pitching well at every level, and reached the majors first in 2021. He pitched solidly in 20 starts that season, but suffered a significant injury in 2022 that limited him to 15 starts for the whole season, 11 of them in the majors where he pitched better than in 2021. He started the season in the minors last year, but the Twins brought him back in late April, and he pitched well again: 28 starts, 8-6, 3.47 ERA, with a WHIP of 1.066. So far this year, in 8 starts, he's 4-1 with a 3.77 ERA. In 43 innings, 30 hits, 18 runs, all earned, 5 HR, 8 BB and 45 K's. His WHIP is much better than his ERA at 1.028. Pitching maven think he's pitched better than his record. One article on him I read last said that both his cutter and change are way above average pitches. He has a career K/BB ratio above 5 to 1.
In spite of the fact that this is his 4th season in MLB, he's somehow managed to avoid ever appearing against the Yanks, so few of them will have faced him before; just Soto, Verdugo and Grisham. He's coming off a brilliant start against the Jays in Toronto: 6 innings, just 1 hits, no runs, no BB and 10 K's. As he's never faced the Yanks, they have no quadruple slash line against him.
Repertoire: Ober is now a 5 pitch righty, having added a cutter this season, to his past mix of fastball, slider, curve and change, To make room for the cutter, he's using all over his other pitches somewhat less; in fact, he's almost stopped using his curve. The mix so far through 8 starts: FB averaging 92 about 38% of the time, Change at 83 about 24%, cutter at 86-7 about 24% as well, slider at 80 about 13%, and the curve 76-7 about twice a game.
My apologies. Scratch all this. Joe Ryan starts for the Twins, not Ober. The source I used for probables said Ober. I'll try to give batter vs. pitcher matchups as we go.

Playing the name game...Ober is one of two players with the first name Bailey in MLB history, the other one is also currently active, Pirates' rotation starter Bailey Falter. And while MLB has seen an Oberg, an Oberkfell, an Oberholtzer, an Obermueller, an Oberlin and an Oberbeck, there have been no other just plain "Ober"s.

The Yanks send Clarke Schmidt out to face the Twins. Through 8 starts, Schmidt is having the best season of his career, and his last start against the Rays was the longest, and arguably best, start of his career: 6 2/3 innings, 5 hits, no runs, 2 BB and 6 K. On the season, Schmidt is 4-1 with a 2.95 ERA. In 42 2/3 innings, he's allowed 39 hits, 15 runs, 14 earned, 5 HR, 15 BB and 47 K, with a respectable WHIP of 1.266.
Schmidt has pitched against the Twins twice before, but this is his first start against him. The two relief appearances both came in 2022. In the first one on June 8th, the Twins smacked him around. In 1 2/3 innings, he gave up 3 hits, 3 hits, 2 BB and 4 earned runs in the middle of an 8-1 loss. The other game in Early September went much better: 3 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB and 2 K's, but the Yanks lost 4-3 anyway. The Twins quadruple slash line against him doesn't mean much because 1) It's a small sample of PA, just 21, and 2) because he's a different pitcher now than then; he's added the cutter than he uses about 30% of the time. Here's the slash line, anyway: .278/.381/.444/.825

Yanks' lineup vs. Ober...is just 3 guys, as mentioned above:
Soto is 2-3, 2 doubles, 1 RBI and 1 K Verdugo is 2 for 7 with 1 RBI, a sac fly Grisham is 0-3 with 2 K's.
Scratch all this, too. Again, my mistake.
Twins' lineup vs. Schmidt:
Julien has never faced Schmidt Larnach is 1-1 with a double and an RBI Correa is 0-2 with a K and 2 BB Kepler is 0-1 with a RBI groundout Castro is 1-2 with a 2B Santana is has never faced him Kiriloff hasn't either Margot is 0-4 with 2 K Vazquez has never faced Schmidt
On the bench: Jeffers is 0-1 with a K, Miranda is 1-2 with a 2B

Last night, Marcus Stroman was not sharp, didn't miss many bats, got into trouble in a couple of innings, and still threw 6 scoreless innings to even his record at 2-2, and get the Yanks the series win, moving them back into 1st after the Orioles won earlier in the day. Aaron Judge had 3 doubles and a HR, knocked in 2 and scored 2 as Stroman, Weaver and Ferguson combined to shut the Twins out, 4-0.
The Yanks' win put them 14 games over .500 for the first time this season, and they still lead the East by 1/2 game. The O's beat the Jays on a walkoff, 2 run HR by Rutschman in the bottom of the 9th to win 3-2. The Rays got 3 in the 6th and held off the Red Sox, 4-3 in Fenway. Right now, the Yanks lead the O's by a 1/2 game, the Sox by 6 1/2, the Rays by 7 and the Jays by 8. They have the best record in the AL and trail only the white-hot Phillies in all of MLB.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Rays and Red Sox conclude their series in Boston with a 7:10 pm start. Zack Littell, 2-2, 3.02 ERA for the Rays, Rookie Cooper Criswell, 2-1, 2.10 ERA for the Sox. The Jays and Orioles have the day off before moving on o their next series on Friday. The Jays will host the Rays, while the Mariners come to Camden Yards to play the Orioles.
And that's it for the pre-game preamble. See you in a little less than 1/2 hour for the game itself.

Splitter low away, 1-1 Splitter low 2-1 FB at the top swung under, 2-2 FB up and in, hit to deep left, it clears the low fence, but a fan reaches over the railing and backhands the HR ball with his glove. Apparently that's still a HR in this park, so the Yanks lead 1-0!!

Torres takes a splitter low over the middle of the plate, 1-0 Swings early and under a slider dropping into the top part of the zone, 1-1 Splitter away, Torres lunges, pulls it on the ground just foul off 3rd. 1-2 Hangs a slider just below middle, belted to deep left center, Kirloff loses it in the zone after settling on the track, he dodged his head at the last moment and it hits his glove, deflects away, Judge scores, Verdugo to 3rd, and Torres has a very cheap double, 2-0 Yanks
