Mike Clevinger starts for the White Sox tonight. Making his 3rd start since signing with Chicago in early April, and then ramping up in the minors, he's 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA is his first two starts. In 6 2/3 innings, he's allowed 10 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned, 1 HR, and 4 BB with 5 K's. His WHIP in this tiny number of innings is an abysmal 2.100.
Clevinger was drafted by the Angels in the 4th round of the 2011 Draft, then traded to the then Indians while still in A-ball. He advance quickly through the Indians' system and was called to the majors for a cup of coffee in May, another in June, and finally for good in August. He had three excellent seasons for the Indians in 2017-2019, going 38-18 in those 3 seasons with an ERA of 2.96. He made just 8 starts in the COVID shortened season of 2020 and again pitched well, but the Indians traded him to the Padres at the belated trade deadline at the end of August along with outfielder and ex-Yankee Greg Allen for Josh Naylor, Austin Hedges, Cal Quantrill and Owen Miller. In 2021 he was bothered by injuries and started just 22 games, finishing with an ERA over 4.00. He then signed with the White Sox as a free agent last year, and again, dealt with minor injuries, starting 24 games, going 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA. The White Sox waited a long time, and finally re-signed him on April 4th.
This will be Clevinger 7th game and 6th start against the Yanks. He's 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA against New York. In 31 innings, he's allowed 22 hits, 14 runs, 13 earned, 5 HR, 12 BB and struck out 37. His WHIP against the Yanks is a very good 1.097, and the team quadruple slash line against him is .198/.276/.378/.655. Clevinger made two starts against the Yanks in 2023. In the first on June 8th at the Stadium, he took the loss in a 3-0 shutout of the White Sox, going 5 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 2 HR, walking 1 and striking out 2. He was much better in his 2nd try, going 6 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 earned run, walking 3 and striking out 6 in a rout of the Yankees in Chicago on Aug. 9th, 9-2 White Sox.
Repertoire: Clevinger is a 5-pitch righty. The only change in his very short 2024 season is to use his change somewhat more and his fastball and slider somewhat less. So far, the pitch mix is: FB averaging 93 about 42-3% of the time, change 85-6 about 23% of the time, Slider 78-9 about 22% of the time, cutter 83-4 about 11% of the time, and a curve 75 that he'll throw once or twice a start.

Playing the name game...There are a huge number of "Mike"s who've played in the majors, but Mike is the only Clevinger in MLB history. You might ask, well what about Garrett, who's already pitched in 3 games against the Yankees for the Rays this season? Well, Garret Cleavinger's last name has the extra "a" tucked in the e and the v. He's the only Cleavinger in MLB history.

Nestor Cortes goes for the Yanks. He's been very up-and-down this year, and it seems to be tied to his pitching at home in the Stadium vs. pitching on the road. On the road, he's gotten smacked around: 0-3 in 5 starts with a 6.75 ERA, and a WHIP over 1.600. At home, he's 1-1 in 4 starts, but with a 1.59 ERA and a microscopic WHIP of 0.6. As the Yanks are home tonight, let's hope that trend continues, at least for this game and his next one. Combined, Nestor is a so-so 1-4 with an ERA of 4.02. In 53 2/3 innings, he's allowed 47 hits , 24 runs, all earned, 7 HR, 11 BB and 51 K, for a solid 1.081 WHIP. He's 1/3 of an inning shy of averaging 6 innings per start, and has thrown the most innings on the staff, good enough for 6th in innings pitched in the AL this season, despite the uneven results.
This is Cortes' 5th career game, and 4th start, against the White Sox. He's pitched well against them, getting a win in each of the 4 games, with an ERA of 2.63. In 24 innings, he's allowed 22 hits, 7 runs, all earned, 3 HR, and struck out 28 while walking just 1 batter. HIs WHIP against them is an outstanding 0.958. The White Sox' team quadruple slash line against Nestor is .239/.255/.348/.603. He didn't pitch against them in his injury-plagued season last year. In two starts against them back to back in May of 2022, he was brilliant in the 1st one, throwing 8 innings of 3 hit, 1 run ball while striking out 7 in a 5-1 Yankees win. In the return match 6 days' later, he got another win, but wasn't as sharp, going just 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, a HR and 3 earned runs while again striking out 7, and the Yanks held on to win 7-5.

When I was young, I used to play APBA baseball. The Advanced version of the game came with several great teams of the past; the 1961 Yanks were one of them. I even remember his pitching grade was a C* (reliever) with a W control grade (bad walk rate). I thought it odd a great team like that had a reliever with that card for its 4th best reliever. There was also a Steve Clevenger who played catcher and first for the Cubs, Orioles and Mariners from 2011 to 2016.

Last night, the Yanks completed their sweep of the Twins in Minneapolis with a 5-0 shutout behind what was easily the best (and longest) start of Clarke Schmidt's career: 8 shutout innings of 3 hit ball, striking out 8 without walking a batter. The O's and Jays had the day off, but the Rays took their 3rd game out of 4 against the Sox in Fenway, winning 7-5. breaking a 5-5 tie in the top of the 9th on a RBI single by Paredes and a sac fly by Palacios.
The Yanks' win put them 15 games over .500 for the first time this season, and they now lead the East by a full game over the O's. The Sox fell behind the Rays into 4th. Tamps is 7 games back of the Yanks, and the Sox are now 7 1/2 back. The idle Jays lost 1/2 game to the Yanks and are now 9 1/2 behind.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: Besides the Yanks-White Sox game at the Stadium at 7:07, the West-leading Mariners come into Camden Yards at 7:05 to start a 3-game battle of 1-letter teams. Bryse Miller, 3-3 2.66 ERA for the M's, John Means, 1-0 3.09 ERA for the O's. The Rays leave Boston and head up north of the border to begin a 3-game series against the Jays in Toronto at 7:07. Tyler Alexander 1-2 5.45 ERA for the Rays, Chris Bassitt, 3-5 5.06 ERA for the Jays. The Sox travel to the Gateway City to open a 3-game set against the Cards in St. Louis at 8:15. Brayan Bello, 4-1 3.13 ERA for Boston, Kyle Gibson, 2-2, 3.67 ERA for the Cards.
And that's it for the preview data dump for today. I'll be back in about 15 minutes for the game.

Perhaps because my own brows are so light that I once tried to draw some on with a black crayon in 3rd grade. Looked great with my light blond hair…

1st pitch to DeJong is a FB high, and Pham gets a huge jump and steals 3rd without a throw as Jimenez holds 1st. 2nd pitch is a FB in almost the same spot, and he pops it to short right, Soto comes in and catches, both runners hold. 2 down.

I’m surprised any team still wants “Tough Guy” Tommy Pham…How do you make a guy like that fit in your clubhouse…
