Chris Flexen pitches for the White Sox, trying to avoid the sweep. Drafted by the Mets in the 14th round of the 2012 draft, Flexen pitched well in their farm system some years, not so well in others. The Mets brought him to the majors for three short stays in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and basically, Flexen failed all three major league tryouts, compiling a 3-5 record in the three seasons combined in 7 starts and 4 relief appearances. He had an ERA of 8.07 and a WHIP of 2.132 in 68 major league innings, and gave up 91 hits, 54 BB and 14 HR. The Mets were understandably less than impressed by this performance and let him go free agent after the 2019 season.
Flexen spent all of 2020 not playing baseball anywhere, at least not in American organized baseball, but the Mariners signed him as a free agent in December, 2020. He was in the M's rotation for all of 2021 and most of 2022 and pitched quite well for them. In the two seasons combined, he was 22-15 with a 3.66 ERA in 53 starts and 11 relief appearance. The 2nd season in the rotation was somewhat worse than the first. In 22 starts, he had an ERA over 4.00, so when their young starter prospects started to blow up to the majors, he got moved the bullpen, where he pitched to under a 2.00 ERA in 11 games.
He started 2023 in their rotation again, and got blown up in 4 starts, and they moved him permanently to the pen. Whatever magic he had found in relieving disappeared in 2023. In 14 relief games, he had an ERA over 6.00, and the Mariners decided they'd had enough of Flexen, and traded him back to the Mets with Trevor Gott for a lefty reliever named Zach Muckenhirn, who I've never seen pitch and I think might be an imaginary player like Sidd Finch (well, no, Muckenhirm's Baseball Reference page says he pitch 3 games and 3 innings for the Mets in 2023 before they traded him. The Mets were so enthralled to have Flexen back that they released him 3 days after the trade, and the Rockies picked him up as a free agent a week after that. He was just as terrible for the Rockies in the 2nd half of the season as he'd been for the Mariners in the 1st half, so even the Rockies didn't keep Flexen to pitch for them; they let him go free agent. Having limited options to go down to from being a Rockie, Flexen did the best he could and signed free agent with the White Sox.
He opened the season in their rotation and got pounded in 3 starts, 0-3 with an ERA of 8.78. Then moved him to long relief and he made two good appearances, allowing just 1 run in 6 1/3 innings. Out of desperation, they put Flexen back in their rotation, and he's done pretty well, 2-0 with 2 no-decisions, an ERA of 2.61 and a WHIP of about 1.1. On the season, he's 2-3 with an ERA of 4.46. In 40 1/3 innings, he's allowed 37 hits, 20 runs, all earned, 5 HR, 14 BB and struck out 30, with a WHIP of 1.264.
Despite his never having pitched in AAA, the Royals had him in the majors from the start of the 2018 season. He made 20 relief appearances and 1 start, and then, in early June, they moved him into the rotation and he did well, going 8-5 with a 3.31 ERA in 19 starts. He pitched decently for an awful Royals team the next season, going 7-14 with a 4.19 ERA for a team that lost 103 games, just four years after they won a title. He pitched very well in the COVID season of 2020, going 5-3 with a 2.47 ERA And then, for no apparent reason, the bottom fell out. In 2022-2023 he went 14-26 with an ERA of 5.24 and a WHIP near 1.6.
This is Flexen's 4th game and 2nd start against the Yanks. He hasn't had a decision against them, but he does have a 6.00 ERA in 9 innings against them. He's allowed 14 hits, 6 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 4 BB with aa K's. His WHIP against the Yanks is 2.000. The Yanks' team quadruple slash line against him is .350/.422/.600/1.022, but it's just 45 PA. In his only start against the Yanks in 2021, he went 5 innings in a no-decision, gave up 8 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 2 HR, 1 BB and 7 K. The Yanks wound up winning the game 5-4.
Repertoire: Flexen is a 5-pitch kitchen sink righty, and the only change in his pitch mix this year is to throw his curve a lot more and the cutter, fastball and change a bit less each. He throws a FB 91-2 about 40% of the time, the cutter 87-8 about 23% of the time, a change 81 about 15% of the time, a slow curve at 72 about 12% of the time, and a slider 80 about 9-10% of the time.

Playing the name game...is basically a waste of time here; too many "Chris"s to name, this Chris is not only the only Flexen in MLB history, he's the only player with "flex" in his name anywhere.

Carlos Rodon was up and down early this year, but has settled down and is looking to pitch his third excellent game in a row as the Yanks try to sweep their 2nd straight series. Making his 10th start this season, he's 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA. In 49 innings, he's allowed 46 hits, 19 runs, 18 earned, 8 HR, and 14 BB, while striking out 49. His WHIP is a respectable 1.224.
Carlos Rodon has never pitched against the White Sox before, not with the Giants in 2022, and not with the Yanks last season. This will be his first game against the team he spent the first 7 years of his MLB career pitching for.

Yesterday, the Yanks beat the White Sox for the 2nd straight game, this time by a 6-1 margin. Luis Gil struggled in the 1st inning, but dominated thereafter, setting a Yankee rookie pitcher record with 14 strikeouts in a game.
The Yanks' win put them 17 games over .500 for the first time this season. The Rays rallied from 4-0 down to take a 5-4 win over the Jays, adding to the Jays recent terrible play; they're 6-15 since April 22. The Mariners rallied from 2-0 down with 2 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th, then held off the O's as Henderson HRed in the 9th to cut it to 4-3 as closer Munoz K'd Rutschman as the tying run at the plate to end the game. The Cards broke open a 2-2 tie in the 8th with a 5-run rally to beat the Red Sox, 7-2
Elsewhere in the AL East today: Besides the Yanks-White Sox game at the Stadium at 1:07, the Red Sox try to avoid getting swept in St. Louis at 1:05; Nick Pivetta, 1-2 3.48 ERA vs. Matthew Liberatore, 1-1 4.56 ERA. The M's and O's play the rubber game at 1:35 in a battle of elite starters; George Kirby, 4-3 3.58 ERA for the M's, O's ace Corbin Burnes, 3-2 2.68 ERA for Baltimore. The Rays try to complete the sweep of the Jays in Toronto and extend their winning streak to 5 in a row; Aaron Civale, 2-3..5.83 ERA for the Rays, Alex Manoah, 0-1 4.91 ERA.
As a result of yesterday's games, the Yanks gained a game on everyone else except the Rays, and now lead the O's by two games, the Rays by 7, the Sox by 9 1/2 and the Jays by 11 1/2.
