Logan Gilbert starts the first game of this 4-game series for the Mariners. Taken by Seattle with the 14th pick of the 1st round in 2018, he shot through A-ball, high-A and AA ball pitching brilliantly in 2019, then his minor league 2020 season was torpedoed (like every other prospect) by the COVID season. He must have done excellent work in their developmental camp, because after behind held back by some injury or more time in the instructional league in April of 2021, he was called to the majors after just one excellent start in AAA in early May. He remained in the M's rotation the rest of that season, and has stayed there ever since. He was so-so for the M's that season, 6-5 with a 4.68 ERA, but was outstanding in 2022 and somewhat less so last season. For 2022 and 2023 combined, Gilbert went 26-13, 3.47 ERA. He made 32 starts in each season, averaging, 188 innings, 170 hits, 77 runs, 73 earned, 24 HR, 43 BB and 182 K's. His WHIP for the two seasons was an excellent 1.127, and his KBB ratio was better than 4 to 1. Given those numbers, it's sort of strange he hasn't made an All-Star team or gotten even one down-ballot vote for the Cy Young.
This will be Gilbert's 5th career start against the Yanks. He was otherworldly in the first one in his otherwise mediocre rookie season: 7 innings of shutout ball, allowing just 1 hit, 0 BB and striking out 8. As a fan, the games blend into one another, and memory plays tricks on you when you get older, but that game sticks in my mind for no good reason. I still fear Gilbert as an opposing starter because he was so dominant in that game, but in the 3 other starts against the Yankees in 2022 and 2023, they've absolutely pulverized him. Overall, in the 4 starters, he's 1-2 with a 7.97 ERA against the Yanks. In 20 1/3 innings, he's allowed 25 hits, 20 runs, 18 earned, 6 HR, 6 BB and just 16 K, with a WHIP of 1.525. A little subtraction will let you figure out just how horrific his last 3 starts against the Yanks have gone. Even last year, when the Yanks couldn't hit just about every other starting pitcher, they still belted Gilbert. That game was May 30th in Seattle, and even in that pitcher's park, he went just 4 innings, allowing 7 hits, 7 runs, 5 earned, 2 HR, 1 BB with 4 K in a game the Yanks won 10-2. When the M's came to the Stadium in June, they didn't even let Gilbert pitch against them, starting Kirby, Castillo and Woo instead. The Yanks' team quadruple slash line against Gilbert is .301/.359/.615/.973/
Repertoire: Gilbert is yet another 5-pitch righty. I can't call him a "kitchen sink" righty because his FB is too good for that descriptor. He became a 5-pitch righty this year by adding a cutter. It's become his "3rd pitch", and he's cut down the use of his FB and curve to make room for it. The mix through 10 starts: FB (sinker, I think) at 96 about 32% of the time, the slider 87-8 about 29% of the time, the cutter 92 about 17% of the time, the splitter 84 about 14% of the time and a curve 83 about once an inning.

Playing the name game...Logan has become a popular name in this country in the last 20 years (Wolverine, anyone? Yes, I know it's his last or only name in the comics, when he goes by that name.) There have been about 15-20 players with first name Logan in MLB history, 3/4 of them have played in the last 20 years. Right now, there are 4 other MLB active pitchers named Logan, including not one but two of them named Logan Allen. The best MLB player name Logan is probably the active Giants' starter Logan Webb. He's the 7th player in MLB history with the last name Gilbert, and although this is just his 4th season, he's already the best of the seven.

Opposing Gilbert, the Yanks send out Marcus Stroman, who, when they signed him appeared to be one of the top two starters on the team. He even made the Opening Day start after the clear #1 Gerrit Cole went down with elbow soreness. But of the five guys in the current rotation, Stroman has arguably been the weakest. His surface numbers look good, and he battles as hard as he can every start, and he hasn't really gotten annihilated in any game yet, but half his starts he's been in trouble almost every inning, and his BB rate is alarming for a guy whose game relies on command and finesse rather than powerful stuff. In 9 starts, he's 3-2 with a 3.32 ERA. In 48 2/3 innings, he's allowed 44 hits, 21 runs, 18 earned, 7 HR, 245 BB and struck out 42. His WHIP is an unpleasant 1.418, thanks to being 4th in the league in walks allowed.
This will be Stroman's 5th career start against the M's, and he's been OK in the 1st four. He's 1-2 with a 3.75 ERA against Seattle. In 24 innings, he's allowed 28 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, with 6 BB and 23 K's. the fact that he's given up just 1 HR to them has probably kept that ERA under 4. His WHIP against the M's is 1.417, and the Mariners' team quadruple slash line against then is .286/.330/.347/.677. His last start against the M's was in Wrigley Field last April, and he pitched OK: 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, both earned, 1 BB, 6 K's with 0 HR, but he still took the loss in a 5-2 Seattle win.

Yanks' lineup vs. Gilbert
Volpe is 1-2 with a 3 run HR and 1 K Soto is 0-7 with 2 BB and 3 K Judge is 1-8 with a double, 3 BB, 3 K and 1 HBP Verdugo is 2-5 with 1 BB and 2 K Stanton is 1-3 with a double Rizzo is 1-2 with a solo HR and 1 BB Torres is 4-8 with 1 double and 1 K Trevino is 1-6 with a 2 run HR. Berti is 1-2 with 1 BB
On the bench: Grisham is 0-6 with 1 BB and 3 K. Now all the above doesn't explain who beat up Gilbert in those 3 starts, because they're off the team, so I'll just point out that Josh Donaldson torched him in both losses in 2022, and DJ LeMahieu had a couple of multi-hit games against him, that Benintendi had a big game against him in 2022, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa had 4 hits and 4 RBI in the pounding he took from the Yanks last season.
Mariners lineup vs. Stroman
Rojas is 2-8 with a RBI vs. Stroman Rodriguez is 0-3 Raleigh is 0-2 with 1 BB and 1 K Raley is 0-2 with a K (That's right, the M's lineup tonight starts with four hitters whose last name starts with "R") Haniger is 0-2 with a sac fly and 1 RBI Moore has never faced Stroman Canzone hasn't either France is 2-4 with 1 BB Urias is 0-3 with 2 BB
On the bench, Polanco is 1-3 with 2 BB, Zavala is 0-2 with a K, and Garver is also 0-2 with 1 K.

Yesterday, the Yanks completed the 3-game sweep of the White Sox, 7-2, with surprise big hits by Trevino and Berti scoring 5 of the 7 runs, and Carlos Rodon posting his 3rd excellent start in a row. The Red Sox avoided a sweep, blasting the Cards 11-3. The O's won their series from these Mariners, winning the rubber game 6-3. The Jays salvaged the 3rd game of their series against the Rays, 5-2, with Alex Manoah pitching his first outstanding game in a long time. The Jays become a much tougher team than they've shown so far if both Gausman and Manoah are back on their games.
The Yanks' win put them 18 games over .500 for the first time this season. They've now won 7 in a row and 13 of 15 since the O's took 3 of 4 from them at Camden Yards, winning all five series since losing that one. They're 2 games ahead of the Orioles, 8 ahead of the Rays, 9 1/2 ahead of the Red Sox and 11 1/2 ahead of the Jays.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: Besides the Yanks-M's game at the Stadium at 7:07, the Jays welcomed (and I do mean WELCOMED) the White Sox in for the first game of a 3-game series. That game started at 3:07 this afternoon, and the Jays slapped the ChiSox around, 9-3. The Red Sox are down in Tampa for the start of a 3-game series against the Rays; the first game due to start about 15 minutes before the Yankees game does. Tanner Houck, 3-5 2.17 ERA for the Sox; Taj Bradley makes his 3rd start for the Rays. Bradley is 1-1 in his first two with an ERA of 2.45. The Orioles follow the Red Sox into St. Louis for the first of three games vs. the Cards at 7:45. Dean Kremer, 3-3 3.72 ERA for the O's and notional ace Sonny Gray, 5-2 with a 3.05 ERA open the series for the Cards.
The Jays' win this afternoon leaves them 11 games back of the Yanks, pending tonight's game against the Mariners.

just an observation - not sure what to make of it, but over the last 11 games, oswaldo has only had 4 starts as berti is getting more of the reps, making his 3rd straight start. tonite is a LH but it can't all have been matchups. also 3rd straight for trevino who has been on fire.

Gilbert's pretty good but he has been roughed up a little in his last two starts. Maybe they get lucky and he's off again.

Isn't it Gilbert? Think he is a RH. Berti has been pretty hot of late.

Seattle has a good pitching staff, so runs might be hard to come by in this series.

Seattle has a good pitching staff, so runs might be hard to come by in this series. Depends on the lineup, I think; O's got 18 of their staff in winning 2 of 3. Assuming the Yanks' solid pitching continues, 4 runs a game might be enough. The M's come into this series 12th in the AL in runs scored per game.

Sinker hits the top outside corner but called a ball anyway, terrible call, at least a 60% strike on Gameday, 2-0 Cutter down and in the drop the bat happy zone for a lefty, popped to short center, Volpe catches, 1 down.
