The return of Tommy Tightpants:
Thus ends the brief, unhappy Yankee career of Clayton Andrews, at least for now.

To try to win their 3rd in a row, and win the series, the Mariners send out another one of their excellent young starting pitchers, Bryce Miller. Drafted by Seattle in the 4th round in 2021, Miller has a brief season in A ball for the M's right after they drafted him, just 9 1/3 innings. He zoomed through low-A high-A and AA in 2022, making 26 starts, going 7-4 with a 3.16 ERA, striking 11 batters per 9 innings. Last year, he made 4 poor starts in AA, but the M's called him up anyway because they had a couple of openings in their rotation beyond the three established excellent starters Castillo, Kirby and Gilbert. He started off brilliantly, going 3-1 in his first 5 starts with an ERA of 1.15, but in his last 20 starts, most of which were good, he had about a half-dozen starts in which he got pummeled. in those last 20 starts, his ERA was over 5.00. On the season, in 25 starts, he went 8-7 with an ERA of 4.32. In 131 1/3 innings, he allowed 124 hits, 64 runs, 63 earned, 18 HR, and 31 BB, with 119 K's. HIs WHIP was a solid 1.209. So far this season, Miller is 3-4 in 9 starts with an ERA of 3.08. In 52 2/3, just 36 hits, 20 runs, 18 earned, 16 BB with an improved K rate, 52 K's total.
One of the beatings Miller took after his brilliant 5-game start came against the Yanks. In fact, that was the first bad game for him in the majors. His only appearance against the Yanks came in late May in Seattle, and they shelled him for 11 hits, 8 runs, all earned, 2 HR. He didn't walk a batter and struck out 3, but it was a disastrous 4 2/3 inning knockout in a 10-4 Yankees romp. It's just 25 PA, but the Yanks' team quadruple slash line against Miller is .458/.480/.917/1.397
Repertoire: Miller was a four-pitch righty last year, but he used his curve and change relatively rarely (just 9% and 6 %). This year, he's junked them both for a splitter, and it's likely that the splitter is the reason for his increased K rate. Miller throws a 95 FB about 65% of the time, the splitter 84 about 18% of the time and a slider 84 about 17% of the time.

Playing the name game...Bryce is a modern boys' name. There have been 8 MLB players named Bryce, none of them played in the majors before Bryce Florie, who began his 8-year career in 1994. Six of the eight are active, and the best Bryce is clearly Phillies slugger Bryce Harper, who may well be headed to the Hall of Fame.
There are dozens and dozens of Millers in big league history. The two best were probably, Bing Miller, who was a starting outfielder on the 2nd great Philadelphia A's dynasty teams that won 3 straight pennants and back to back World Series from 1929 through 1931, and Eddie Miller a shortstop good enough to make 7 NL All-Star teams between 1940 and 1947, and get down-ballot MVP votes in eight seasons between 1939 and 1948, despite never playing on a pennant-winning team. Of all the Millers in MLB history, the only one whose first name was Miller was the great Yankee manager, Miller Huggins, who, vastly aided by the presence of Babe Ruth, founded the original Yankees dynasty, leading the Yanks to their first six AL pennants and 3 Championships in the years 1921 to 1928.

Opposing Miller, the Yanks will send Nestor Cortes to the hill to try to break their first 2-game losing streak since the first two games of the Orioles series three weeks ago. Nestor has had a bit of a schizophrenic season so far. He's been terrible on the road: 0-3 with an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP over 1.600 in five road starts, but he's been brilliant in his five home starts: 2-1, ERA 1.27 and WHIP 0.65. Overall, in 10 starts, Cortes is 2-4 with an ERA of 3.56. In 60 2/3 innings (good enough for 4th in the league), 52 hits, 25 runs, 24 earned, 7 HR, 12 BB and 57 K's. His WHIP of 1.055 is 10th in the AL, and his BB/9 of 1.78 is 9th in the league.
This is Cortes' 5th game vs. Seattle and his 4th start. He's be so-so in the previous games, 1-0 with a 4.08 ERA. In 17 2/3 innings, he's allowed 14 hits, 8 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 7 BB with 20 K's. His WHIP vs. the Mariners is a solid 1.1289. Seattle's team quadruple slash line against Cortes is .219/.292/.406/.698. His most recent start against the Mariners was in Seattle in late May last season, and it was his 5th and final win of the season and his final start before going on the IL with his shoulder injury. He made it through 5 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, both earned, 3 BB and striking out 5 in throwing 101 pitches qualify for the W.

Yanks' lineup vs Miller: Only five Yankees on the current roster faced Miller before, just three of them with the Yanks:
Judge is 2-3 with 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI vs Miller Verdugo is 1-2 with a 2 run HR and a BB Torres is 2-3 Both Cabrera and Berti are 0-2 vs. Miller
If that seems like not nearly enough damage to account for a 10-4 blowout win, you're right. Five Yankees no longer on the team had two hits that game, and Bauers hit a 2 run double and a solo HR against Miller, and Kiner-Falefa and Calhoun each had a 2 run double as well. Bader had two hits off Miller, too.
Mariners lineup vs. Schmidt:
Crawford is 1-5 with 1 BB and 2 K Rodriguez is 0-3 with 1 K Garver is 1-3 with 1 RBI (a sac fly) and 1 BB Raleigh has never faced Cortes before Moore is 0-4 with a BB and 3 K France is 4-10 with 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K and 1 GIDP Polanco is 2-10 with 2 2B, 1 RBI and 2 K Haniger is 1-4 with 2 RBI (1 was a sac fly), 1 BB and 1 GIDP Urias has never faced Nestor.
On the bench, Zavala is 0-2 with 2 K

Yesterday, the Yanks fell behind 4-0 as Woo dominated them for 6 innings, then got a 3-run HR in the 7th from Torres to make it game, but the bullpen gave up runs in the 8th and 9th, and Munoz slammed the door for the 2nd day in a row, as the Yanks lost 6-3.
The Yanks' loss drops them back to 16 over .500 at 33-17. The O's game was suspended by rain in the 6th with the score tied at 1, and the continuation was earlier today. The Cards got 2 in the 6th and held on to win 3-1. Last night, Garrett Crochet and three relievers shut out the Jays on 2 hits, 5-0. The Red Sox fell behind 2-0 in the first, but tied the game in the 6th and took the lead with 2 in the 8th, on their way to beating the Rays for the 2nd straight day, 5-2.
Including the completion of last night's O's-Cards game, the Yanks remain in 1st, 2 games up on the O's. The Red Sox have jumped over the Rays back into 3rd, 7 1/2 behind the Yanks. Rays are 1/2 game behind them and 8 games out of 1st. The Jays gained a game and are 10 1/2 behind the Yanks.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: Besides the Yanks-M's game at the Stadium at 7:07, the O's are trying to avoid being swept by the Cards, and they were on their way to doing it, they got 3 unearned runs in the 3rd; but the Cards have gotten one back in the 5th and 3 more in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead, top 7 in St. Louis. The Rays try to avoid getting swept by the Red Sox in Tampa at 6:50pm. Brayan Bello, 4-2 3.96 ERA for the Sox, Ryan Pepiot 3-2 3.68 ERA for the Rays. The White Sox and Jays play their rubber game at 7:07 in Toronto, White Sox send out cannon fodder Nick Nastrini, 0-2 7.88 ERA, to face Christ Bassitt, who's been so far this year against every team not named Yankees, 3-6 5.03 ERA (take out his excellent start against the Yanks and he's 2-6 with a 5.57 ERA)

I am NOT rooting for the Rangers but Rangers on ESPN at 8 and Yankees streaming. This might be one of the lowest market watched Yankee games in a long time.
