I’m working from home today, so I’ll get to see a day game. Miss Cone and O’Neill though.

A split would be nice after the way the first two games went.

The Mariners pitch their notional ace, Luis Castillo, to try to win the series, 3-1. Castillo was signed by the Gians as an international free agent at age 16 in 2011. The Giants traded him to the Marlins in 2014. The Marlins traded him to the Padres in late July of 2016....who then traded him back to the Marles right at the deadline for Colin Rea. The Marlins traded him to the Reds in January, 2017. Finally, the Reds traded him to the Mariners at the deadline in 2022 for 4 prospects, including Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo. And, of couorse, the Yanks tried to trade for him at that time, but wouldn't give up either Volpe of another of their top prospects for him. Hard to believe a pitcher as outstanding as Castillo has been traded 5 times in the last 8 years. He's been in the majors in 2017, and has pitched well in pretty much every season since 2019.
He's made the All-Star team three times in those five seasons, including last year when he finished 5th in the AL Cy Young voting. In 33 starts, he was 14-9 with a 3.34 ERA. In 197 innings, he gave up just 160 hits, 81 runs, 73 earned, 28 HR, 56 BB and struck out 219. His WHIP was an excellent 1.096. This year, in 10 starts, he's 4-5 with a 3.28 ERA. In 60 1/3 innings, he's allowed 54 hits, 24 runs, 22 earned, 7 Hr, 15 BB and struck out 66. His WHIP so far this season is a very good 1.144.
Today, Castillo is making his 6th career start against the Yanks. He's pitched very well against them, 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA. In 31 2/3 innings, he's allowed just 21 hits, 10 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 9 BB and struck out 41. His WHIP agaiust them is 1.137. The did get to him some in his only start against them last season. On June 21 at the Stadium, he allowed 4 hits, 3 runs, all eaned, with 4 BB, 2 HR and 3 K's in 5 innings. The Yanks won the game 4-2. The Yanks' team quadruple slash line vs. Castillo is .193/.294/.312/.606.
Repertoire: Castillo has been a 3 -pitch righty his entire career. He's lost 1-2 mph off his avg. velocity on his FB in the last year or two, but still throws it as much as ever. The pitch mix so far this season is FB at 95-6 about 62% of the time, the slider at 85-6 about 24% of the time, and the change 88 about 14 % of the time.

Playing the name game...Loads and loads of Luis's (64, to be exact) and loads and loads of Castillo's (28 of those) in MLB history, so the unique thing here is that there was another player named Luis Castillo who played in the majors. He was the 2nd baseman who scored just over 1000 runs and accumulated not quite 1900 hits in his 15 year career, finishing with a BAVG of .290. He's most famous to Yankees fans as the guy who dropped the easy popup off the bat of Alex Rodriguez with two on and two outs in the bottom of the 9th, and the Yanks down by 1, allowing the Yanks to steal their most preposterous of their many walk-off wins in 2009.

Opposing Miller, the Yanks will send rookie phenom Luis Gil out to try and get a split of the 4 games. Gil got off to a solid start, but has been brilliant his last 4 games. In his last start against the White Sox, he was dominant, allowing them just 1 run in 6 innings, walking just 1 and striking out 14. He's 5-1 on the season so far, with an ERA of 2.39 that would be good enough for 7th in the AL if he had enough innings to qualify, which he will if he can get through 3 innings today. He's 3rd in the AL in wins, 1st in hits per 9 innings, 3rd in K's per 8 innings, 8th in total K's, but because of his wildness in his first five starts, he's still 3rd in the league in walks allowed. In 49 innings, he's allowed just 26 hits, 14 runs, 13 earned, just 3 HR, and 27 BB with 62 K's. The Mariners have been working deep counts against the entire Yankees' staff this series; the interesting thing will be if they can do it to Gil and drive him out of the game on walks and pitches in less than 5 innings, or if his dominant stuff will negate that strategy.
This is Gil's 2nd career start against the Mariners. His first was his 2nd major league start in 2021. He went 5 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 BB and striking out 8. Yusei Kikuchi matched his 5 scoreless innings, and the M's won it in the 8th with 2 unearned runs off of Lucas Luetge. It's just 20 PA, but the Mariners' team quadruple slash line vs. Gil is .111/.200/.111/.311

This is going to be a tough test for Gil. A guy that's been known to have control issues versus a team that doesn't chase.

Yesterday, the Yanks hit 4 HRs, with Soto hitting 2, Cortes fought through a determined Mariner lineup to finish 5 innings for the W, and Weaver finsihed off the last 1 2/3 innings to close it out, 7-3. The Yanks win pushes them back to 17 over .500 at 34-17.
The O's lost both the completion of the suspended game to the Cards, 3-1, then blew a 3-0 lead in the regularly scheduled game and lost 5-4, allowing the Cards to sweep the series in St. Louis. The Sox completed a sweep of their own aginst the Rays in Tampa, 5-2. The Jays pummelled the White Sox 9-2 to win that series; Chris Bassitt threw 7 shutout innings for the win. As of this afternoon, the Yanks lead the O's by 3 full games, the Sox by 7 1/2, the Rays by 9 and the Jays by 10 1/2.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Red Sox and Rays have the day off. The Jays make the 4-hour drive across the border to Detroit to begin a 4-game series against the Tigers at 6:40 pm. Kevin Gausman, 2-3 4.83 ERA throws the opener for the Jays, Jack Flahery, 1-3 3.79 ERA goes for the Tigers. The O's leave their St. Louis blues behind them and travel north to take on the wretched White Sox at 7:40 pm. Grayson Rodriguez makes his 2nd start since coming off the IL for the O's; he's 4-1 with a 3.15 ERA. Mike Clevinger makes his 4th start for the White Sox; he's 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA after the Yanks slapped him around a bit in his last start.
And wiuth all the preview stuff posted, we await first pitch in about 20 minutes from now or so.

FB down the middle at 97, fouled back, 0-1 FB down and in, 1-1 Misses a FB on the corner away, 1-2 Takes a FB that started inside but tailed to the low inside corner, clearly a strike, ꓘ, 1 down
