The Padres start their notinal ace, Yu Darvish, in game 1. Signed by the Rangers in 2012 as an NPB free agent, they traded him to the Dodgers at the deasdline in 2017. He went free agent that fall and signed with the Cubs in 2018. The Cubs traded him along with catcher Vctor Caratini to the Padres for pitcher Zach Davies and four prospects. This is Darvish's 12th major league seasonj. He's had some great seasons, some seasons in which was injured and 1 or 2 bad seasons. He's made 5 all-star teams and finished 2nd in the Cy Young Award voting twice, once in each league. He's been top 10 in wins twice, in ERA twice and top 10 in K's and K's per 9 innings seven times.
Today, Darvish is making his 10th start of the season. He's 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA. In 47 2/3 innings, he's allowed jus 30 hits, just 2 HR and just 13 BB, while striking out 46. His WHIP is an outstanding 0.902. If he was 'qualifed", he'd be 4th in ERA, 3rd in WHIP, 3rd in H/9 innings, and 2nd in HR/9 innings. In his last 4 starts he's been unhittable: 24 innings, 10 hits, 0(!!) runs, 3 BB, 24 K's and a WHIP of 0.54. The last two were against two outsanding lineups, both starts went seven scoreless innings against the Dodgers and the Braves, two hits in each game, 1 walk in each game, and 7 K's against LA and 9 against Atlanta. The Yanks have their work cut out for them tonight.
This will be his 8th career start against the Yanks, and he's done well: 3-2, 3.07 ERA. In 41 innings, he's allowed 39 hits, 14 runs, all earned, 7 HR, 7 BB and 45 K's. His WHIP against them is an excellent 1.122. The Yankees' team quadruple slash line against Darvish is .244/.280/.425/.705. His last start against him was the worst of his career vs. the Yanks. They blasted him out in 2 2/3 innings. He gave up 7 hits, 7 runs, all earned, 0 BB, 1 HR and struck out 2. So he has extra incentive to avenge that pounding tonight.
Repertoire: Darvish has always been both a power righty AND a kitchen sink righty. He's thrown six pitches throughout his careeer, and some of those six have multiple variations. There have been minor changes this season; he's throwing the slider a bit less and the cutter and curve a bit more. The current mix: FB 94 about 36% of the time, cutter 86-7 about 30%, curve 76 about 15%, slider 82 about 11%, splitter 87 about 7% and a change 88 about once a game.

Playing the name game...Not much doing here tonight...The only other Yu in MLB history is the infielder Yu Change, who played with the Indians, the Pirates, the Rays and the Red Sox from 2019 to 2023. Yu is the only Darvish in MLB history.

Opposing Darvish, the Yanks send Carlos Rodon to the mound. Rodon was very up and down earlier in the season, but he's recently settled in to throw three good games in a row. Rodon is 5-2 on the season with a 3.27 ERA. In 55 innings, he's allowed 50 hits, 21 runs, 20 earned, 0 HR, 16 BB and struck out 55. His WHIP has settled down and is now a solid 1.200.
This is Rodon's 4th career start against the Padres. He's been OK vs. San Diego, 1-2 with a 3.79 ERA. In 19 innings, he's allowed just 12 hits, but also 8 runs, all earned, 2 HR, 10 BB and 20 K. His WHIP against SD is 1.158, and the Padres' team quadruple slash line against Rodon in .177/.282/.294/.576. All 3 of his starts against the Padres came in his terrific 2022 season. He pitched a good game against them in May (2 ER in 6 innings, but took the loss in a 4-3 Padres win), a great game against them in July (Cmplete game 3-hitter with 12 K's in a 3-1 Giants win), and got knocked out after 4 innings in the 3rd game in August (4 hits, 4 BB, 1 HR and 5 earned runs against him in 4 innings in a 6-5 Padres win).

Mariners lineup vs. Gil:
Arraez is 1-5 with 1 BB and 4 K (!!) Yesterday, Stanton and Judge hit solo HRs off of Castillo, the team rallied for 3 insurance runs against the Mariners' middle relief, and Luis Gil led another dominant pitching effort with 6 1/3 shutout innings, as the Yanks blanked the M's 5-0 on just 3 hits with 12 K's. The win pushed them back to 18 games over .500 for the 2nd time this season.
The O's fell behind 2-1 early, then mashed for 7 runs in the middle innings, and finally held off a furious rally in the 9th, beating the White Sox 8-6. The ChiSox scored 4 in the 9th, and had a men on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Cano struck out DeLoach. And then a weird call ended the game. Benintendi hit a high pop behind the mound on the shortstop side, and Vaughn the runner on 2nd, slightly bumped Henderson, the O's shortstop, as he moved around Vaughn toward the ball. It didn't hinder Henderson much if at all, the infield fly rule was called, and after Henderson caught the popup easily for the 2nd out, the weirdness commenced. The 3rd base ump, Junior Valentine, saw the bump and ruled Vaughn out for interference, creating a game-ending double play. According to rule 6.01 (a), a runner CAN be called out for interference for hindering a fielder trying to make a play on a batted ball whether it was intentional or not, but in view of the facts that Henderson caught the ball easily, THE INFIELD FLY RULE WAS CALLED, AND THE BATTER WAS OUT WHETHER HENDERSON CAUGHT THE BALL OR NOT, and there was no play after the catch anywhere because the runners were back on their bases by the time the catch was made, so I have no idea what other play Vaughn interfered with. Even if in 'accordance with the rules", that's a terrible judgment call (the runner CAN be called out) in my opinion, and it ended the rally and the game. Edit: the league later admitted Valentine's call was incorrect, but it still ended the game for the O's. Oh, and the Jays broken open a 1-1 tie through 6 by getting 2 in the 7th, 3 in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th to pound the Tigers 9-1 in Detroit. Coming into today's action, the Yanks lead the O's by 3, the Red Sox by 8, the Rays by 9 1/2 and the Jays by 10 1/2.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Blue Jays and Tigers play the 2nd game of their series at 6:40 pm in Detroit: Alex Manoah, 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA for the Jays, and Matt Manning, 0-1 4.80 ERA for the Tigers. Right now, the Tigers are trying to close it out, up 6-0, top 9. The red-hot Royals come to Tampa to start a 3-game series against the cold Rays at 6:50 pm. Seth Lugo, having a brilliant season so far, 7-1 with 1.79 ERA (leads the AL in both right now) for the Royals, and Shawn Armstrong will be "opening" for the 4th time this season for the Rays. The Royals have won 6 in a row and 15 of 21, and the Rays have lost 4 in a row after being swept by the Red Sox at home. Adn right now, the Royals remain hot, pounding the Rays 8-1, top 9. The Brewers go to Fenway to open a series against the Red Sxo at 7:10 pm. Bryse Wilson, 2-1 2.79 ERA will oppose Kutter Crawford, 2-2 2.17 ERA. Right now, the Brewers are up 6-2 in the 7th. The O's play the 2nd game of their series in Chicago against the White Sox at 7:40 pm. Orioles ace Corbin Burnes, 4-2 2.41 ERA will be opposed by Chris Flexen, 2-4 5.48 ERA. Right now, the O's have a 1-0, going top 4 in Chicago.
And later on, it's Rodon vs. Darvish at 9:40 in San Diego.

And I'll also be keeping an eye on the Rangers, as they struggle to get a game at home vs. the Pantheres. The Rangers had a great 1st 10 minutes, but the Panthers steadied the game by killing off a 2 minute penalty that could have been 5 minute major, and got a ticky-tack power play, pretty much a make-up call, and scored another back-breaking goal with less than 2 minutes left in the 1st period, going off the ice with the momentum firmly on their side. The last seven minutes of the period were pretty much like most of Game 1.

Wow he's coming off of dominating the Dodgers and the Braves. That's about as hot as a pitcher can get. He's actually striking out less than he usually does so far this year, but he's also giving up less hits and home runs than he ever has. Still throwing about as hard as ever too.
I wanted the Yankees to get him so badly before the 2012 season too. I'm a fan of his in general, although I'd like to see him get hit hard enough to lose tonight.

Here's hoping Rodon delivers the goods. He's familar playing in San Diego. Should be a fun series. Soto, Higashioka, Wade and king gets to catchup with former teammates.

I remember there was a poster on our old board that wanted the Yankees to go hard after Darvish back then and talked about him all the time. Maybe it was you?

Panthers controlling the play first five minutes of the 2nd. Rangers had one brief flurry in the attacking zone, but no shots on goal. Rangers have no shots on goal the last 10+ minutes.

I see Kay isn't missing the road trip to San Diego and who can blame him? It's a city I'd love to retire to, if it only wasn't so expensive.

Rangers pressing hard, got some shots and a couple decent chances, but nothing that dangerous, Panthers countered with a breakaway rush, but Shesterkin stopped the backandher from in close.
