I don't have a good feeling about this game. I'm not sure Stroman has the stuff to stymie this lineup.

San Diego is a hard team to figure out, they should be better than they are. San Diego is the perfect example as to why culture and attitude matters in sports. In 2023 the Padres attracted more fans than any team but the Dodgers and New York Yankees. In the four seasons since the pandemic hit, the Padres have ranked among the top five in attendance every season, an era in which their roster has featured Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Xander Bogaerts, Juan Soto, Blake Snell and Josh Hader. www.espn.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2023/sort/homeTotal

Just wanted to say thank you to those of you on the board who served in the military. While I did not serve myself, somthing I regret in my old age, I do come from a family of veterans that I am proud of.

My dad was a Marine who enlisted when he turned 18 in April of 1944. I think about him every day, but especially this weekend and on Veterans' Day.

In the second game of the series, the Padres will start their power righty, Dylan Cease. Cease was drafted by the Cubs in the 6th round in 2014, and he's one of the two key prospects in the deal that sent lefty Jose Quintana to the Cubs (the other was Eloy Gimenez). Cease always threw very hard, and rose steadily through the minors, performing well with a high K rate at every level (albeit with an elevated walk rate) until he reached AAA in 2019. At Iowa (AAA) his ERA and WHIP were both mediocre, but after 15 starts there, the White Sox called him to the majors for the rest of the season. He struggled his first 11 starts in the majors (3-7, 6.75 ERA, and allowing a HR every 4 innings), but he must have made some adjustment, because his last 3 starts of the season were good. He was in the rotation for the White Sox for the next 4 seasons, getting better each season until last year when he had a down season. His best season was 2022, when he was 7th in the AL in wins, 2nd in ERA, 1st in bWAR for pitchers, 8th in WHIP despite his elevated walk rate, 2nd in hits per 9 inning, 3rd in K/9, and 2nd in total K's. He made the All-Star team, and was 2nd in the Cy Young voting, losing out to Justin Verlander.
After his mediocre season last year, knowing he was about to enter his arbitration years, and having decided to do a complete tear-down and rebuild, the White Sox traded Cease to the Padres this past off-season for reliever Steven Wilson and three solid prospects; pitchers Jairo Inarte and former Yankee farmhand Drew Thorpe, and intriguing outfield prospect Samuel Zavala. (not to be confuised with Mariners backup catcher Seby Zavala, who the Yanks just faced). This year so far, Cease has done excellent work for the Padres. In 10 starts, he's 5-3 with a 3.05 ERA. In 59 innings, he's allowed just 35 hits, 23 runs, 20 earned, 5 HR, 20 BB and has struck out 73. He's currently in the top 10 in the NL in wins and WHIP, leads the NL in fewest hits/9 innings, and is 3rd in both K's and K's/9 innings. His BB rate is the lowest of his career so far, and his K/BB ratio is the best in his career. His last 5 starts have been two mediocre-to-poor starts against the Phillies and Atlanta, sandwiched around 3 very good starts against Arizona, the Cubs and Colorado.
This will be his 5th career start against the Yanks, the first four have not gone well. He's 1-1, but with a 6.75 ERA. In 18 2/3 innings, he's allowed 16 hits, 14 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 13 BB but he has struck out 29 (Pitcher who strikes out a lot of guys vs. a lineup that had a lot of high strikeout hitters, go figure). His last start against the Yanks was excellent. In the middle of 2023's poor season, he dominated the Yanks for 5 1/3 shutout innings in a game in Chicago in early August, allowing just one hit, 0 BB, and striking out 7 in a 5-1 White Sox win. The Yankees' team quadruple slash line vs. Cease stands at .225/.349/.493/.842.
Repertoire: Cease throws hard, very few starters average more velocity on the FB than he does. Historically, he's a 4-pitch righty, but heavy on the FB and slider. This year, he's added a cutter that he uses infrequently and has cut the use of his changeup to almost nothing. The pitch mix so far this season: FB averaging 97 about 44% of the time; he also has a slider 87-8 he uses 41%, a curve 83 about 13%, the cutter 92 about twice a start, and a change mid-70's that he uses about once a game.

Playing the name game...There have been just just 11 Dylans in MLB history, all of them first name Dylan and all of them of very recent vintage. The first Dylan in MLB history was pitcher Dylan Bundy, and he didn't debut until 2012. Eight of the Dylans are currently active, and Cease is the best of all 11. For the next best, it might be Dylan Moore of the Mariners, Dylan Carson of the Cards, or Dylan Floro, the reliever. None of them stands out yet, though Moore might be the best of them if he can hit like he has so far this season at age 31. There are no other "Cease"s in big league history, and if you're wondering, no Ceasars or Ceasers or Caesars either.

Opposing Cease, the Yanks send out Marcus Stroman to make his 11th start this year. He's had a bit of an up and down season, pitching great in his first two starts, very well in his last two, and some poor games in between. But he battles as hard as he can, and has done his best to limit damage even in his weaker starts. He's struggled at times but hasn't allowed more than 4 runs in any start. He has especially struggled with his control, as his walk rate is significantly higher this season than any in his career. The only category in which he appears in the AL top 10 is total walks.
Despite his struggles, he's benn able to hold things together, doing his job in the rotation: 3-2, 3.05 ERA. In 56 innings, he's allowed 47 hits, 22 runs, 19 earned, 8 HR, 26 BB with 48 K's, and his WHIP (because of all those walks) is a mediocre 1.304. His last start was his best this season, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run on a solo HR to his last batter, with just 1 BB with 6 K's. Clay Holmes, some cheap hits, and some poor command flushed his win away, blowing his first save of the season, allowing 4 runs to score in the 9th in a 5-4 M's win.
This is Stroman's 6th career start against the Padres, and he's pitched great against them: 4-0 with an ERA of 1.76. In 30 2/3 innings, he's alllowed 26 hits, 8 runs, 6 earned, 3 HR, 10 BB and struck out 30. His WHIP against them is an excellent 1.174, and the Padres' team quadruple slash line against Stroman is .224/.286/.336/622. His last start against the Padres was in early June of last season, and he went 6 innings for the win, allowing 4 hits, 1 run (unearned), 3 BB with 6 K's. The Cubs won 7-1.

As a January baby in 1954 I was in your “class” in school. I was solidly opposed to What was happening overseas at the time anc wanted nothing to do with it…

Yesterday, the Yanks shattered Darvish's 25 inning scoreless streak by belting him for a double, a triple and 4 HR in the first four innings, getting 7 runs off him in his 5 2/3 innings. Soto, Judge and Stanton all belted long home runs in the 5-run 3rd inning that turned the game into an early rout. Rodon pitched shutout ball into the 7th, allowed the first two batters to get on, but Santana came in to bail him out of that jam and get through the 8th, and rookie Yoendrys Gomez struck out the side on 13 pitches to end the game. Yanks won 8-0 and got to 19 games over for the 1st time this season at 36-17. They've now won 3 in a row and 16 of 20.
In AL East games last night, the Tigers put the breaks on Alex Manoah's big comeback, knocking him out in the 5th, and putting down the Jays 2-run rally in the 9th to win, 6-2. The Rays took an early 1-0 lead, but the Royals buried them in the middle innings, scoring in each of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, 8 runs total, and won, 8-1. The Royals win was their 7th in a row, and 12th in 15 games. The Rays have now lost five in a row. Seth Lugo won his league leading 8th game for the Royals, and lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.74. The Brewers got to Kutter Crawford early with 3 in the 3rd, and knocked him with 3 more in the 5th, going on to beat the Red Sox 7-2 at Fenway. Crawford's ERA went from 2.17 to 2.89 in one bad start. The O's took a 4-0 lead over the White Sox, but Chicago rallied to tie it with 3 in the 5th and 1 in the 7th, before Adley Rutschman's 2 run single in the 8th decided things, 6-4.
Entering today's play, the Yanks continued to lead the O's by 3, but gained a game on the other 3 teams: the Red Sox, Rays and Jays fell 9, 10 1/2 and 11 1/2 games back, respectively.
