Just wanted to say thank you to those of you on the board who served in the military. While I did not serve myself, somthing I regret in my old age, I do come from a family of veterans that I am proud of. The right sentiment of course, but we should keep in mind that Memorial Day is to honor those who gave the "ultimate sacrifice"...Veterans Day is to honor those who served.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: Unlucky Reese Olson of the Tigers pitched another outstanding game, and was finally rewarded with his first win, as the Tigers head off the Jays 2-1 in Detroit. Olson is now 1-5 on the season, a preposterously bad record for a pitcher who is now 2nd in the AL in ERA at 1.92. Ross Baumgarten, 1980, anyone? In Chicago, White Sox starter Eric Fedde, having a remarkable career-turning beginning of the season came into the game with a 4-1 record and an ERA of 3.10. Fedde was taken out after 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing the tough O's lineup just 3 singles, but the O's staged another late-inning comeback, hitting 3 HRs for 5 runs in the 8th off reliever Jordan Leisure and closer Michael Kopech and held on to win 5-3, their 3rd straight over the ChiSox. The Royals and Rays were in a see-saw game in Tampa, the teams trading runs; it was tied at 3 after nine innings and both scored their ghost runner in the 10th. But the Royals broke through for three runs in the 11th on a bunch of singles and doubles and beat the Rays for the 3rd straight day, 7-4; the Royals won their 8th straight, and the Rays lose their 6th straight. The Brewers got 5 in the 3rd off Red Sox' ace Nick Pivetta, and forced him out of the game in the 4th, then held on to beat Boston for the 2nd straight game, 6-3.
And in about a half-hour, it's Stroman vs. Cease in San Diego at 9:40. Going into this game, the Yanks lead the O's by 2 1/2 games, the Red Sox by 9 1/2, the Rays by 11 and the Jays by 12.

Now comes The Saturday Leadersâ„¢ for May 25th
Among AL hitters.... Gunnar Henderson of the O's has blown by Bobby Witt, Jr. to take over the AL lead in bWAR with 3.5. He's only the 2nd Oriole in team history to have as many as 17 HR in the team's first 50 games. The rejuvenated Sal Perez of the Royals now leads the AL in BAVG at .330. It would still be Steven Kwan's .353, but he's been on the IL for 3 weeks, and if you add enough at bats for him to "qualify". his BAVG would drop to .305. Juan Soto is 3rd right now at .315. Kyle Tucker of the Astros leads in OBA at .417, but both Soto and Judge are hot on his heels at .413 and .411, respectively. Tucker also still leads in slugging at .626, but Judge is now right behind at .619. Tucker obviously leads in OPS at 1.043, but Judge is again making a move at 1.030, and Soto is 3rd at .995. J.J. Bleday of the A's still leads the league in games played with 53, but is now tied with 3 Yankees, Judge, Soto and Gleyber Torres, who have played every game this year so far. After years of inexplicable days of rest, the Yankees' lineup this season has been all but cast in stone, and I only hope they don't wear the starters out in the 2nd half of the season. The returns of D.J. LeMahieu and Jasson Rodrigues should help them get more days off. Bobby Witt, Jr. leads in runs with 47. Marcus Semien of the Rangers leads in AB with 221 but Soto has passed him in total PA with 242. The recent hot streaks of both Soto and Jeremy Pena of the Astros have pushed Jose Altuve down to 3rd in the league in hits; Soto has 64 hits, and leads Pena by 1 and Altuve by 2. Soto, Judge and Henderson have all passed Tucker in total bases. Soto has 118, 1 ahead of Judge, 2 ahead of Hendereson and 4 ahead of Tucker. Judge now leads the AL in doubles with 17; Jarren Duran of the Red Sox still leads in triples at 6. Tucker still leads in HR with 17. but he's tied with Henderson. Judge is one behind them, Soto is tied with Jose Ramirez of the Guardians for 4th with 14, and Giancarlo Stanton is tied with Josh Naylor of the Guardians for 6th with 13. Ramirez has still leads in RBI with 49; Soto is 2nd, 6 back of Ramirez, and Judge is tied for 4th with Henderson at 37. Judge leads with 43 BB, two ahead of Tucker. Soto is 3rd with 35. Randy Arozarena of the Rays still leads with 63 batting K's, but Julio Rodriguez has jumped into 2nd because of his recent slump, he's 1 behind Arozarena. Jose Caballero of the Rays still leads in steals with 18, still two ahead of Witt, Jr. Caballero still leads in caught stealing with 8. Vinnie Pasquantiino got a couple of sac flies in the last two days, and moved back ahead of Alex Verdugo. Pasquantino has 6 for the AL lead; Verdugo is 1 behind. Jeffers still leads in HBP with 10, and Andres Gimenez of the Guardians is one back of Jeffers. We think Anthony Rizzo gets hit all the time, and he's on pace for 18 this season, but he's tied for 5th with 6 HBP. Judge continues to hold a wide lead the AL in GIDP with 11, and I'm going to jinx him by mentioning he has had just one in 14 games, and that one is the only one he's hit into this month. There, that oughta do it. Jose Trevino is one of seven hitters tied for 4th with 7.

In the NL:
Mookie Betts leads all of MLB in bWAR at 3.8 Ohtani leads in BAVG at .340. LaMonte Wade, Jr. of the Giants has been hot all season, but the Giants have finally stopped platooning him constantly, and he now has enough PA to take a big lead in OBA, leading all of MLB at .469. Marcell Ozuna of the Braves has taken advantage of Ohtani's recent slump to grab the lead on slugging at .631; Ohtani still leads in OPS at 1.031. Betts still leads in PA at 240 but he's no longer tied for the league lead in games played. The Padres have now played one more game than the Dodgers, and Profar and Tatis, Jr. now lead all of MLB in games played with 54. Luis Arraez of the Padres now leads the NL in at bats with 215, and in hits with 72. Ohtani still leads in total bases at 127, but Alex Bohm of the Phillies has passed him to lead in doubles with 20, and Ozuna has retaken the lead in HR with 15. Ozuna also continues to lead in RBI with 47. CJ Abrams of the Nationals still leads in triples with 4. Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies passed Betts, and now leads in BB with 37, Betts is one behind. William Contreras of the Brewers has passed Betts in runs scored with 43; Betts is now two behind. Elly de la Cruz continues to be way out front with 31 steals, 13 ahead of Brice Turang of the Brewers. Will Benson of the Reds and Oneil Cruz of the Pirates have both passed Schwarber in strikeouts. Benson has 72, Cruz is one back, and Schwarber is one behind Cruz. Brandon Nimmo of the Mets continues to lead in HBP with 8. Ketel Marte of the D'backs is still tied for the league lead in sac flies 5, and Max Muncy of the Dodgers is still tied with him, but so are Christian Walker of the D'backs, and Bryson Stott of the Phillies. Manny Machado continues to gain on Judge but is still one back; Machsdo leads the NL in GIDP with 10.

Among AL pitchers:
Seth Lugo has regained the league in bWAR for AL pitchers at 2.9. He also leads in ERA at 1.74 and wins at 8. Luis Gil of the Yanks is now 4th in ERA at 2.11 and Clarke Schmidt is 8th at 2.59. Gil is also tied for 2nd in wins with Carlos Rodon; both are in a 4-way tie with Logan Allen of the Guardians and Tarik Skubal of the Tigers at 6. Emmanual Clase and Nick Sandlin of the Guardians are still tied for the lead in games pitched with 26, and T.J. MacFarland of the A's is still there with them. There are no Yankee pitchers in the top 18, which is probably a GOOD thing. Clay Holmes is tied for 19th with 3 others at 22 games pitched. There are 12 AL pitchers who are tied with 11 games started coming into today's games, two of them are Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes. The same four AL starters have 1 complete game and 2 of those are shutouts, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Lugo also leads in the AL in innings pitched at 72 1/3. Cortes is now tied for 2nd with Corbin Burnes of the O's at 65 2/3 innings. Jack Flaherty of the Tigers has passed Garrett Crochet of the White Sox in both K's and K's per 9 innings at 81 and 11.951, respectively. Gil is 5th in K's with 70, and 3rd in K's per 9 at 11.386. Tarik Skubal leads the AL in WHIP at 0.850 Zac Eflin of the Rays leads in BB/9 at just 0.61, and has retaken the lead from Flaherty in K/BB ratio at 11.000 Triston McKenzie of the Guardians is still leads in walks with 31. Gill is 3rd with 29, and Marcus Stroman is 4th at 26. Clase has now moved into 1st in saves with 15; Holmes is one behind.

Finally, on the NL side:
Shota Imanaga of the Cubs is dominating everywhere, and is now the MLB leader in pitcher bWAR at 3.0. He also leads MLB in ERA with a microscopic 0.84. Ranger Suarez of the Phils still leads in wins with 9, which is also the MLB lead. Suarez also leads in WHIP at 0.788 Dylan Cease, tonight's starter for the Padres, leads in H/9 at 5.329 Tyler Glasnow of the Dodgers leads all of MLB with 87 K's, and the NL in K/9 at 11.69. He's also tied with Zack Wheeler of the Phillies. and Logan Webb and Kyle Harrison of the Giants for the league lead with 11 starts. Chris Sale, having a brilliant comeback season at 35, leads the NL in BB/9 at 1.271. If Imaanaga fades, and Sale can stay healthy, he might just win his 1st Cy Young Award, after 6 straight seasons in the top 5 of voting without winning one. Max Fried threw a shutout this week, and that makes him one of four NL starters with a shutout, but it also gave him the NL and MLB lead in complete games with 2. Wheeler has, for the moment, pushed past Glasnow, and leads the NL in innings with 67 2/3. Ryan Helsley of the Cards leads in saves with 15 (also tied with Clase for the major league lead).
...and with that, The Saturday Leadersâ„¢ are done, and so is all the preview folderol for tonight's game. See you in about 20 minutes for first pitch.

I don't have a good feeling about this game. I'm not sure Stroman has the stuff to stymie this lineup. They'll also be looking for a bit of vengeance after last night's shutout blowout loss. I think the Padres have the advantage in the pitching matchup, but while the Yanks do get shut out too often, they're capable of scoring a bunch or runs multiple games running this season. Hope you can stay with us for the whole game tonight, nw. And...the usual good evening, to you.

While I did not serve myself, somthing I regret in my old age, I do come from a family of veterans that I am proud of. Totally agree, 55. My dad was a Marine who enlisted when he turned 18 in April of 1944. I think about him every day, but especially this weekend and on Veterans' Day. MY dad was a belly gunner on a B-17 and flew 30 bombing missions over Germany. Didn't get the chance to talk to him much about it when he was still with us.

MY dad was a belly gunner on a B-17 and flew 30 bombing missions over Germany. Didn't get the chance to talk to him much about it when he was still with us. Men who've fought in war, especially down-in-the-dirt infantry, rarely want to talk about the experiece, because it was so horrible it brings up horrific memories they'd rather forget. They'll talk about training or boot camp, or strange things or funny things that happened while not at the front, but not actual combat. Guys who served in the Navy or Air Corps/Force might be more willing, because their combat had more "distance", most of the time. My uncle (father's brother-in-law) served on a destroyer, and would talk about it sometimes, but nothing horrible. My other unlce (mother's brother) was a Ranger in Patton's 3rd Army who won himself a Bronze Star, but would NEVER talk about combat with his children, or me and my sister. Too horrible; no point in terrifying children.

His last start against the Yanks was excellent. In the middle of 2023's poor season, he dominated the Yanks for 5 1/3 shutout innings in a game in Chicago in early August, allowing just one hit, 0 BB, and striking out 7 in a 5-1 White Sox win. The Yankees' team quadruple slash line vs. Cease stands at .225/.349/.493/.842.
I was at this game last year with my son and it was one of the most frustrating games I've ever went to. Cease actually walked 6 or 7 Yankees which is why his outing was so short, but Yankees could score, stranding runners all over the place. A perfect example of their 2023 season. Cole was the opposing and pitched well until Boone tried to squeeze an extra inning out of him in the 8th and the wheels fell off. I got to see rare 2023 Cole loss in person.
