Kaybli layin' down on the job again ( ). Thanks, jeep.
Now I can load all my usual stuff, starting with...
The Angels were playing poorly right up until the day Mike Trout tore his maniscus and had to have knee surgery. They 11-18 at the end of that day, and the only surprising thing is that they haven't been any worse without him: 9-14 since his injury. In fact, they've been a tiny bit better, .379 with Trout, .391 without. Tonight they send Griffin Canning out against the Yanks to try to improve their fortunes. Canning was an Angels draft pick; 2nd round, 2017. He made a rapid ascent through their farm system, pitching at A, AA, and AAA in 2018, and after 3 AAA starts, they brought Canning to the majors for good in early April, 2019. Since then, he's had 5 mediocre-to-poor major leagues seasons, and didn't get through any of them without a significant injury except for the COVID-shortened 2020 season, arguably his best season. He missed the last 7 weeks of 2021 and all of 2022 as a result of a stress fracture in his lower back. He's never made more than 22 starts or pitched more than 128 innings in any season. For his career, Manning is 21-25 with a 4.65 ERA, and a WHIP 1.309.
Last season, he set those career highs of 22 starts and 127 2/3 innings, going 7-8 with a 4.32 ERA and a respectable WHIP of 1.236. He's been healthy this season, and is on track to set new highs in starts and innings, but he's pitching worse so far: 2-4, 5.05 ERA in 10 starts, 51 2/3 innings. He's allowed 50 hits, 30 runs, 29 earned, 9 HR, 21 BB and struck out 36. His WHIP so far this season is a rather poor 1.374.
This will be his 3rd career start against the Yanks, and he's pitched reasonably well in the first two, both last season. He gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, a HR and struck out 4 in getting a no-decision in a 3-2 Yankees' win in mid-Aptil. Canning is a low K rate pitcher, but in his 2nd start against the Yankees last year in Anaheim in mid-July, he set a career high with 12 K in just 5 2/3 innings. gave up 6 hits and 2 runs, with 3 BB but no HR, and got another no-decision in a 4-3 Angels win. Canning's ERA and WHIP against the Yankees are 3.27 and 1.455, and the Yankees' team quadruple slash line against him is .250/.348/.325/.673.
Repertoire: Canning is a 4-pitch righty, and he's using basically the same mix as when he broke in to the majors 5 years ago, except he's using the FB and slider a bit less and his change a bit more. This season so far, it's FB averaging 93-4 about 36-7%, slider 88 about 26%, change 88-9 about 23%, and curve 81 about 15% of the time.

Playing the name game...there have been 20 MLB players with last name Griffin in MLB history, but the use of Griffin as a first name is a very modern trend, there are only two of them. Both entered the majors in 2019 or after, and it is reliever Griffin Jax of the Twins who is the only other MLB play with first name Griffin. There have been 10 Mannings, 2 Dannings, 2 Fannings, 3 Lannings and 1 Banning (2 if you count Peter's son Jack Banning playing Hook's pirates in the baseball game in the movie, "Hook"), but Griffin is the one and only Canning in MLB histoty.

The Yanks send Nestor Cortes out to see if he can break his bad form in road games so far this season. So far this season, Nestor is 3-1 with an unbelievable 1.12 ERA at home, and 0-3 with an unseemly 6.75 ERA on the road. The Angels are 4th in the AL in both BAVG and HR, but somehow 9th in runs per game, just above the league average at 4.34, so Cortes might have a shot, but the Angels are doing much better at home: 4.8 runs per game. Overall, Nestor is 3-4 on the season with a 3.29 ERA, good for 20th among 40 qualified starters. In 11 starts, he's pitched 65 2/3 innings, good enough for 6th in the AL. He's allowed 55 hits, 25 runs, 24 earned, 7 HR, 15 BB and struck out 63. His WHIP is an outstanding, 1.066 (13th in the AL), and his K/BB ratio is 12th at 4.2. Again, he has two road starts coming up, including tonight, so we'll see if he can hold those positions.
This is Nestor's 7th game against the Angels, but just his 3rd start. In 19 2/3 innings total, he's allowed 15 hits, 7 runs, all earned, 3 HR, 5 BB and struck out 21. His WHIP against them is a low 1.017, and the Angels' team qudruple slash line against him is .211/.279/.380/.659. He pitched once against them last year, and got a win at the Stadium in mid-April, going 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 0 HR, walking 2 and striking out 7.

The Yanks had the day off yesterday, and so did the Rays and 8 other major league teams. I remember when Memorial Day (along with Independence Day and Labor Day) meant every team in MLB played a doubleheader, but that ended in the Benjamin Harrison administration, if I can remember correctly so far back in time. However, the Orioles did play, and they pounded on the Red Sox at Camden Yards, winning 11-3. They didn't get any HRs, but they did have 6 doubles and a triple among their 13 hits. Outfield Kyle Stowers had two of those doubles, and he knocked in 4 for the O's. Cole Irvin threw 5 scoreless innings for the win. The O's have now won 5 in a row since the Cards swept them in St. Louis, while the Sox have lost 3 of 4, and are 9-14 since May 1st. Chris Bassitt has found someone else he can pitch well against besides the Yanks. He went up against the hapless White Sox in Chicago last night and threw 5 shutout innings against after 7 scoreless vs them at the Ragers Centre last time out. The 12 innings of zeroes have lowered his ERA from just over 5.00 to just over 4.00. The Jays got homers from Bichette, Springer and Schneider, accounting for all 5 runs in their 5-1 win, breaking their 3 game losing streak and sending the ChiSox to their 6th straight loss.
Entering today's play, the Yanks' lead over the O's is down to 1 1/2 games. The lead the Sox by 9 1/2, Rays by 10 1/2 and the Jays by 12.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: Elsewhere in the AL East today: the Sox scored 4 early and 4 more late and lead the O's in Baltimore 8-3, bottom 9. Mitch Spence has come out of the pen for his 3rd start for the A's, and now stretched out a bit, pitched 5 1/3 scoreless tonight against the Rays in Tampa and the A's lead 3-0, bottom 9. The Jays got 3 in the 2nd and lead the White Sox 3-1, top 4 in Chicago.
In a little while, it's Cortes vs. Canning in Anaheim at 9:35 pm.

Games are over in Baltimore and Tampa, Sox beat the O's, 8-3. A's beat the Rays, 3-0. Yanks get a chance to re-open their lead over the O's to 2 1/2 games in about 10 minutes.
