Stanton back at DH, hopefully he has a better game than last night. But he should be batting 5th. Batting after Judge almost guarantee's an out. I would much rather see Verdugo in the number 4 spot. Having said that, Stanton will probably hit three HRs tonight Five. He’s hitting five tonight. A new MLB record. Five doubles would be a record, too, but he’d never survive all the running…🤓

How can I become a double platinum Ruthian legend Diamond Chip Legacy Hall of Famer? Or is it too late? Have I just had a long career as an accumulator of bad posts? 🤓…Am I the Jesse Orosco of the forum?… 48,000 posts and 2 saves?… On second thought, I wouldn’t want all the attention. Going out to plant a couple things before the game…

Unlike what was listed on the sites that I check for probable starters, the Angels are not starting Jose Soriano in the rubber game of the series agianst the Yanks. Instead, the Angels will go with lefty Patrick Sandoval. Sandoval was drafted by the Astros of the 11th round of the 2015 draft. He pitched increasingly well in the Houston system for parts of 4 seasons, putting up an 11-1 record in 20 starts in low-A, high-A and AA and an ERA of 2.06 ERA in 2018. The Astros then cashed in Sandoval's potential for a starting catcher, Martin Maldonado.
He spent the 1st half of 2019 in AA and AAA with the Angels, not pitching well, 4-7, 5.71 ERA in 19 starts and 80 1/3 inning. The Angels called him up anyway in early August. He pitched poorly in 10 starts, going 0-4 with a 5.03 ERA. He was injured most of 2020, pitching poorly in 6 starts. He missed half of 2021, but pitched much better. He pitched almost the whole season in 2022, and had his best season to date, going 6-9 in 27 starts with an ERA of 2.91. He pitched almost the whole 2023 season, but not as well, going 7-13 with a 4.11 ERA. This season has gone very poorly so far. In 11 starts, he's 2-7 with an ERA of 5.60. In 54 2/3 innings, he's allowed 61 hits, 38 runs, 34 hits, 6 HR, 24 BB and 57 K's, with a very bad WHIP of 1.555. He's pitched 3 good games in his last 5 starts, but got blasted by the Guardians in his last start.
This will be Sandoval's 4th career start against the Yankees, and he's done OK. He's 2-1 with a 3.93 ERA against New York. In 18 1/3 innings, allowed 9 hits, 8 runs, all earned, 1 HR, and 11 BB with 19 K, with a good WHIP of 1.091. The Yankees' team quadruple slash line against Sandoval is .145/.270/.242/.512. He made two of those starts against the Yanks last season. They beat him up in the first one at the Stadium in April: 4 innings, 4 hits, 5 runs, all earned, 6 BB and 5 K in a game the Yanks won, 9-3. In the return match in mid-July in Anaheim, Sandoval dominated, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing just 2 hits, 3 BB and a solo HR, striking out 7, earning the W in a 5-1 Angels win.
Repertoire: Sandoval has been a 4-pitch lefty his whole career. He's made a minor change in his repetoire this year, throwing his FB a bit less and his change a bit more. The current pitch mix so far this season: FB averaging 94 about 32% of the time, change 83 about 29%, slider 87 also about 29% and curve 76 about 10% of the time.

Playing the name game...Way too many Pats and Patricks to list, probably hundreds of them. He is the 4th Sandoval in MLB history. The best and most famous of the other three is um, "hefty" infielder Pablo Sandoval, who played 14 seasons in the majors for the Giants, Red Sox and Braves, and was a key part of three Giant's World Serues winning teams in 2010, 2012, and 2014.

The Yanks send Carlos Rodon out to try to take the series. After seven up-and-down starts to open the season, he's been excellent in his last 4 games: 4 wins, 24 1/3 innings, 20 hits, 5 runs (all earned), 3 HR, 5 BB, with 21 K, going 6 or 6 1/3 innings in each start. On the season, he's 6-2 in 11 starts with an ERA of 2.95, good for 14th in the AL among qualified starters. In 61 innings, he's allowed 53 hits, 21 runs, 20 earned, 9 HR, 19 BB with 57 K. His WHIP on the season is a solid 1.180.
This will be Rodon's 7th start against the Angels, and he's done poorly in the first six. He's 2-4 with a 5.34 ERA. In 32 innings, he's allowed them 26 hits, 19 runs (all earned), 5 HR, 19 BB and 32 K. His WHIP vs. Anaheim is a poor 1.406, and the Angels team quadruple slash line against Rodon is .222/.333/.376/.709.

The Yanks got a solo HR from Verdugo in the 4th, a "little league HR" from Volpe on a triple and a throwing error in the 7th for a 2nd run, survived a HR from O'Hoppe in the 7th, and broke up a rally in the 9th on a double play and a grounder to LeMahieu to survive and win 2-1, evening the series with the Angels. The win got them back to 19 games over at 38-19.
In other East games, the O's hammered Kutter Crawford for 5 runs in the 2nd, on their way to a 6-1 win over the Red Sox. The Rays won a see-saw 4-3 game with the A's on a walkoff single by Jose Siri. Alex Manoah was pulled from his start last night in the 2nd inning with elbow discomfort, but changeup lefty specialist Trevor Williams threw 3 1/3 scoress innings following Manoah, and the Jays did just enough on offense to sweep the White Sox and send them to their 8th straight loss, 3-1.
At the start of the day today, the Yanks continue to lead the O's by 1 1/2 games, the Sox by 9 1/2, the Rays by 10 1/2 and the Jays by 11 full games.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Rays rallied in the bottom of the 9th with a run to tie the game 4-4, another one in the 10th to tied it 5-5, and finally walked it off in the 12th on a two-out single by Richie Palacios to score Jose Caballero. The win was the Rays' 2nd in a row, but just their 3rd in the last 10 games. Jack Flaherty K'd 9 and gave up just 1 hit and 1 BB in 6 1/3 vs. the Sox in Fenway, the Tigers have a 2-0 lead, going top 8.
And Kreider just got a great feed from Mika and tucked a backhander around Bobrovsky to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead with 17:30 left in the 2nd!!
