Let's keep this rolling!
I'm surprised this isn't one of the FOX games and since it isn't, we get another late start, the last one of this road trip.

Logan Webb, the current Giants' ace (at least until Blake Snell regains his form), tries to even the series tonight in San Fran. Drafted by the Giants in the 4th round in 2014, he took his time making it to the majors. They started him in the rotation his first three years in the minors, but he lost time due to injuries in multiple seasons, and he finally underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016. He spent his rehab seaon in the bullpen in 2017, but moved back into the rotation for 2018, and he had a terrific season in AA, turning around his career. He got off to a good start in AAA in 2019, 5 strong starts, and then tested positive for PEDs, costing him an 80-game suspension. He protested his innocence but apologized to everyone and everything.
Reinstated to active duty in July, he made one good start in rookie ball, two in low-A, made three starts in AA with varying success (one start was a game in which he was knocked out in the 4th, allowing 10 runs, all of them somehow unearned), and finally one great start in AAA before the Giants called him up in mid-August. He made 8 mediocre starts for the Giants in 2019, and 11 more mostly bad starts for them in the COVID season of 2020. He finally broke through as a front of the rotation starter in 2021 at age 24. For the three seasons from 2021-2023, he's been one of the top 10-15 starters in MLB, 6th in WAR, 8th in wins, and 11th in ERA. In those three seeasons, in 91 starts, he's 37-25 with an ERA of 3.07. averaging 185 innings, 168 hits, 71 runs, 63 earned, 13 HR, 39 BB with 172 K, and his WHIP is an excellent 1.112. Last season, he was 2nd in the Cy Young voting in the NL to Snell, leading MLB in innings, and the NL in BB/9 and K/BB ratio. He even got some downballot MVP votes for a team that finished under .500. Webb is a classic, solid #2 type starter.
This season, he's picked up where he left off last year. He's 4-4 with an ERA of 2.74. In 72 1/3 innings, he's allowed 72 hits, 25 runs, 22 earned, just 2 HR, 19 BB and 61 K. Since he's so good at keeping the ball in the ballpark, the Yanks are probably going to have to come up with some clutch hits with RISP today. He's tied with a bunch of other pitchers for most starts with 12, and is currently 8th in the NL in ERA, 4th in innings pitched, 2nd in fewest HR per 9 innings, 2nd in batters faced, and 4th in FIP. On the other hand, he's also 2nd in most hits allowed. He comes into this off of four excellent starts in a row, allowing just 4 earned runs in 26 innings. His last start was right in line: 7 innings aganst the Mets, allowing just 3 hits, 1 BB and just 1 unearned run while strikeing out 8...in a no-decision that the Giants lost, 4-3.
This will be just the 2nd start in Webb's career against the Yanks. The first was Opening Day last season, and the Yanks got to him for two HR, 4 hits, 4 earned runs, but he struck out an uncharacteristic 12 over 6 innings. He gave up a walk to start the 7th, was lifted, and the walk and another run came around to score. Gerrit Cole went 6 shutout innings in the opening salvo of his Cy-Young-winning season and got the W in a 5-0 Yankees win. Webb's ERA against the Yanks for that one start is 6.00, but the WHIP was just 1.00. It's just 24 batters' worth, but the Yanks' quadruple slash line against him is 182/.250/.455/.705.
Repertoire: Webb is a 3 pitch righty who keeps the ball down to avoid homers and gets a ton of grounders. His ground ball percentage is almost 57%, and his GB to FB ratio is nearly 3-to-1. This year so far, he's throwing his FB (sinker) a bit more and his changeup a big less. The pitch mix: FB averaging 92 about 42%, a change 87-88 about 36% (which is actually a small velo gap between FB and change), so his true offspeed pitch is a slider 83-4 that he throws about 22% of the time. His stuff must have excellent two-plane movment because of the small velocity gap from fastest to slowest.

Playing the name game...as with Jordan (Hicks, last night), the first name Logan is another name that has become popular in recent years, as I mentioned when the Yanks faced Logan Gilbert at the Stadium a week or two ago. There are 24 players in major league history with the first name Logan, and except for Logan Drake, who played 3 seasons in the early 1920's, none of them started their career before 2006. As mentioned at the time, Webb is probably, to this point, the best Logan in MLB history, unless Gilbert passes him somewhere down the road. There have been 4 playes with the last name Logan, the best of them shortstop Johnny Logan, who made 4 all-star teams and was the starting shortop for the Milwaukee Braves teams that won consecutive NL pennants in the late 1950's, beating the Yanks for the title in 1957, when Lew Burdette and his alleged spitter beat the Yanks three times, including complete game 7-hit shutouts in both game 5 and on just 2 days' rest in game 7.
Logan is one of just 13 Webbs in MLB history. As of now, the best of them is Brandon Webb, whose 7-year career was cut short by injuries after pitching 6 great seasons, compiling 33 bWAR, winning a Cy Young and then finishing 2nd twice in a row over 3 seasons from 2006 through 2008. Then his right shoulder went out on him, and after an abortive comeback attempt for the Rangers in 2011, his rotaor cuff blew out, effectively ending his career. Logan might catch and surpass Brandon if he can stay healthy another 3-4 seasons. Side note curiousity: Earl Webb of the Red Sox set the major league record for doubles in a season with 67 in 1931. He was a lefty and played wallball with the Monster heavily that year. It was a one-season fluke; Earl never hit even half as many doubles in any season before or after. The record still stands 93 years later. Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers is the most recent player to take any sort of run at it, leading MLB last year with 58 doubles. He had 23 at the end of May, but hitting just 5 in June basically ended his shot.

The Yanks have recalled Cody Peteet from the minors to take over in the rotation for the injured Clarke Schmidt; the Yanks lack of depth of starting pitching may cost them over the next month until/if Gerrit Cole can complete his rehab and come back to the major league roster near the end of June as is forecast. Poteet is a 4-pitch sinker change type of righty. He's been battling a blister problem recently that has damaged his performance, so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't last long today. In his only other start in the majors this year, he made an emergency start in the 2nd game of a rainout-produced double-header, and he baffled a pretty good Guardians team, holding them to 6 hits and 1 run over 6 innings, stiking out 4 without walking anyone. It was the middle game of the series in Cleveland that the Yanks would've swept if they hadn't coughed up a 2-run lead in the bottom of the 10th in the series finale. This is Poteet's 1st appearance against the Giants in his major league career.

Panthers again took over the game in the 2nd half of the 1st period, and finally cashed in with another very late in the period backbreaker by Bennett. 1-0 Panthers, and it might as well be 3-0.

Yankees lineup vs. Webb...again, just one start last year, except for guys from the NL like Soto:
Volpe is 0-1 with 1 BB Soto is just 1-13 with 1 BB and 3 K Judge is 1-3, a solo HR and 2 K Verdugo is 1-3 with a K Stanton is 0-3 with a K Rizzo is 1-3 Torres is 1-2 with a 2 run HR and a BB Trevino is 0-2 with 2 K; Wells has never faced him LeMahieu is 0-3, all 3 outs were K's
On the bench: Grisham is 6-21 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI (sac fly), 5 K and 1 GIDP; Cabrera is 0-2 with 2 K, and pitchers Stroman and Weaver are 1-1 with a sac bunt and 0-1 with a K, respectively.

Giants' lineup vs. Poteet: He's never faced them, and despite his (limited) time in the NL pitching for the Marlins in 2021 and 2022, none of them have ever faced Poteet.

Aaron Judge smashed a 3-run HR early and a solo shot later on, and that was all the offense the Yanks would need last night. Marcus Stroman pitched his 4th strong game in a row, Jeff Weaver got the last 5 outs, and the Yanks beat the Giants, 6-2.
In other East games, the O's got 3 runs in the 6th and Albert Suarez and 4 relievers combined to shut down the Rays on 5 hits, and the O's won 3-1. The O's have won 7 of their last 8, the Rays have dropped 8 of their last 11. The Rays fell out of a tie for 3rd in the East and into a tie for 4th-5th. The Jays staged a 14-inning death struggle with the Pittsburg Pirates, before Davis Schneider belted a 2-run walkoff HR for the win. For the Jays, that was their 4th win in a row. The Red Sox knocked out Tiger starter Kenta Maeda in the 5th and Tanner Houck threw 7 innings of 3 hit, 1 run ball to lead the Sox to a 7-3 win. Houck is now nestled in 2nd in the AL in ERA between league-leader Seth Lugo of the Royals and the Yankees Luis Gil. Maeda, having a brutal first half, saw his ERA balloon to 6.25.
At the start of the day today, the Yanks lead the O's by 2 games, the Red Sox by 10 1/2 and the Rays and Jays by 11 1/2.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Pirates struck early and often, building up a 6-0 lead on their way to an 8-1 win over the Jays. Mitch Keller struck out 8 in 6 innings, giving up just 1 run, and the Pirates' Luis Ortiz (as opposed to the Phillies' Luis Ortiz) earned himself a rare 3-inning blowout save by giving up just one hit and striking out 3. The O's blew an early 3-0 lead as the Rays got 5 runs in the 2nd and 3rd, but the O's kept pounding Rays' starter Taj Bradley, knocking him out in 3 1/3 innings, allowing 9 earned runs and 4 home runs, and the O's went on to win 9-5. The O's have now won 8 out of 9; the Rays have now lost 9 of 12. The Red Sox scored 6 runs over five diffent innings, knocking out Reese Olson for just the 2nd time this season, and the Sox went on to win, 6-2. Cooper Criswell threw 5 innings of one run ball to get the win. The Red Sox have won 2 in a row after dropping 5 of 7.
Through the early games today, the Yanks lead the O's by 1 1/2, the Red Sox by 10, and the Rays and the Jays by 12 1/2.
In a little while, it's Poteet vs. Webb at 10:05 in Oracle Park.

Maybe you're right, chi, but the refs gave the Rangers extra time to try to decide to challenge, and they didn't challenge, so it must not have been clear enough to justify taking the delay of game penalty and losing the challenge for the rest of the game.

Mookie Betts leads the NL in bWAR at 3.6 Luis Arraez has gotten hot and is back in his usual spot: 1st in BAVG at .342 LaMonte Wade, Jr. got hurt after getting hot, and is no longer qualifed for the leader lists, so the OBA lead has fallen to Jurickson Profar of the Padres at .424 Shohei Ohtani has retaken the lead in slugging at .607, and leads in OPS at 1.000. Among AL pitchers:
Seth Lugo continues to lead the league in bWAR for AL pitchers at 3.3. He still leads in ERA at 1.72 and wins at 9. Luis Gil is now 3rd in ERA at 1.99, Clarke Schmidt 9th place slot is about to vanish as he falls below the innings requirement due to his strained lat. Marcus Stroman is 11th, Carlos Rodn is 14th, and Nestor Cortes is 20th. Gil and Rodon are in a 3-way tie with Tarik Skubal of the Tigers in wins with Stroman and Schmidt are part of a 13-way tied for 7th with 5. Emmanual Clase and T.J. MacFarland of the A's are tied for the lead in games pitched with 29 There are still no Yankee pitchers in the top 17. There's a preposterous 21-way tie for the league lead in games started, including Rodon, Cortes and Stroman. The same four AL starters have 1 complete game and 2 of those are shutouts, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯; that hasn't changed from last week. Lugo also leads in the AL in innings pitched at 78 1/3. Cortes is now 7th with 71, and Stroman is tied for 8th with two other pitchers at 69 1/3 innings. Jack Flaherty of the Tigers still leads in K's with 90, but Garrett Crochet of the White Sox has taken back the lead K's per 9 innings at 81 and 11.951, respectively. Gil is 5th in K's with 70, and 3rd in K's per 9 at 12.02 Tarik Skubal still leads the AL in WHIP at 0.82 Zac Eflin of the Rays leads in BB/9 at just 0.61, and still leads in K/BB ratio at 11.000 Triston McKenzie of the Guardians is still leads in walks with 34. Gill is 3rd with 31, and Marcus Stroman is tied for 4th at 29. Clase has now still leads in saves with 17; Holmes is one behind.

On the NL side:
Shota Imanaga had a huge blowup game this week, giving up 7 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Brewers. He blew past Ranger Suarez of the Phillies and two other pitchers to fall to 4th in pitching bWAR. Suarez now holds the lead at 2.7. Imanaga also fed to 3rd in ERA. Reynaldo Lopez of he Braves vaulted over both Imanaga and Suarez into 1st with an ERA of 1.72. Ranger Suarez of the Phils still leads in wins with 9, but Chris Sale of the Braves is now 1 behind. which is also the MLB lead. Suarez also leads in WHIP at 0.82, and not coincidentally, has passed Dylan Cease for the NL lead in hits per 9 innings at 5.375. Ryan Glasnow of the Dodgers leads all of MLB with 95 K's, but Freddie Peralta of the Brewers has moved passed him in K/9 innings at 11.84.. He's also On eof 10 pitchers tied for the lead in starts at 12. Sale still leads in BB/9 at 1.27. Max Fried is still the only MLB pitcher with 2 complete games this year, and he's still one of four pitchers in the NL who have thrown a shutout. Aaron Nola of the Phillies has overtaken Glasnow and Zack Wheeler of the Philliss and moved into 1st with 77 1/3 innings. Ryan Helsley of the Cards still leads in saves with 18, but that also gives him solo possesion of the major league lead, one ahead of Clase.
