I liked LeMahieu in the 9th spot. They moved him up to 6th today because, as you'll see below in the pitcher vs. batter stats, he's the only Yankee in the lineup with a good record against Snell. Whether he's the same hitter now as he was the last time the Yanks faced Snell...well, that's a dubious idea.

There are few Yankee fans who don't know a great deal about Giants starter Blake Snell, who throws ace-caliber stuff for 5+ innings at a time whenever he's healthy, which isn't all that often. Drafted by the Rays with the 52nd pick of the 1st round in 2011. He worked his way up their farm system slowly over the next 5 seasons, usually pitching well in spite of walking too many batters and suffering some sort of injury every season. In 2016, he made 13 good starts for Durham (in spite of the fact that his walk rate was high, because his K rate more than made up for it), and the Rays called him to the majors in mid-June to make 19 good starts for the major league team. He started 2017 with the Rays, but after 8 mediocre starts, they sent him back to AAA to work things out. After 7 good starts there, they called him back to the majors, where he's pitched ever since, except for rehab assignments. He pitched better after his recall, and the next season, 2018, he was brilliant, winning his first Cy Young Award by going 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA, leading the league in both wins and ERA.
Over the next 4 seaons, the only one Snell got through without an injury was the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He pitched well at times, so-so in other times, but nothing like the brilliant 2018 season. After 2020, he had 4 years of service time, and the Rays, as is their habit, looked to cash in Snell's trade value before he could become too expensive via arbitration. They traded him to the Padres for four prospects, the most well-regarded of whom was Luis Pitino, an uber-pitching prospect who still hasn't broken through yet. It was one of the few examples I know of where the Rays got beat on a trade for prospects, although they still have a pitching prospect from that deal who's doing well in AA and might yet turn into something valuable. Snell had a mediocre season for the Padres in 2021, a good season in 2022, and pitched well enough last year to win his 2nd Cy Young Award. The Padres let him go free agent, and his agent Scott Boras tried for months to get a ridiculous contract for a pitcher who's frequently brilliant, but also frequently hurt and far less effective. He had to settle for a 1-year deal and a player option for next year, in hopes of having a great season this year to prove to teams he's worthy of a big Boras contract. So far, it's not going well.
He made three bad starts, went on the IL for a month and has come back to make two more bad starts. To date he's 0-3 on the season with an ERA of 10.42. In 19 innings, he's allowed a gruesome 27 hits, 23 runs, 22 earned, 3 HR, 11 BB and struck out 24. His WHIP is a sky-high, 2.00. He made some small progress in his most recent start against a very tough Philles lineup; 4 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 1 HR, 2 BB and 7 K's in a no-decision that the Giants won 8-4.
While Snell was pitching for the Rays and healthy, he started against the Yanks in just about every series the two teams played, 18 starts in all. His record against the Yanks is a mixed bag: 4-6 with a 4.31 ERA. In 77 1/3 innings against New York, Snell has allowed 67 hjts, 39 runs, 37 earned, 13 HR, and 44 BB, but with 92 K's. His WHIP against the Yanks is a poor 1.435, and the Yankee team quadruple slash line against Snell is .230/.329/.401/.730. His most recent starts against them in the regular season were two in 2020. His lasted just 3 innings against them in early August, but gave up no hits an no runs in a game the Rays won 1-0. In the return match 10 days later at the Stadium he lasted long enough for the W, but didn't pitch as well, going 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 2 HR, 2 BB and struck out 3. The Rays won that one as well, 6-3. His actual most recent start against the Yanks came in game 1 of the 2020 ALDS. The Yanks slapped him around for 6 hits, 3 HR, 2 BB and 4 earned runs in 5 innings, and saddled Sneill with the loss in a game the Yanks won 9-3.
Repertoire: Snell is a classic power lefty with big-time stuff, but his control still deserts him from time to time. He's always had a very high K rate and a high BB rate. He's a 4 pitch lefty, and although this year's results have been far worse thus far, his pitch mix has hardly budged from last year's Cy Young winning performance. The pitch mix through 5 starts: FB averaging 95-6 thrown about 48% of the time, a curve at 80-81 about 18% of the time, a change 85 also about 18% of the time, and a slider 88-89 about 16% of the time.

Playing the name game...Boring name game today, hardly worth the effort...as with Jordan and Logan, the first name Blake is one that has become much more popular in recent decades. There have been 21 Blakes that have played in the majors, none of them starting their career before 1998. Of these, Snell has clearly had the best career; the only other Blake with a significant major league record so far is Dodger reliever Blake Treinen. Of the five players with last name Blake, the only significant career among them is Casey Blake, who played in 12 MLB seasons, managing to compile 25 bWAR mostly in 8 seasons as a starter for the Indians and Dodgers from 2003 to 2010. Blake is also clearly the best of 5 Snells who have played in the majors. Again, only one other Snell had any sort of a significant career: Ian Snell, a mediocre rotation pitcher for four of his seven MLB season, going 38-53 with a 4.86 ERA in 136 starts and 16 relief appearances.

The Yanks send Nestor Cortes out to the mound to see if he can throw back-to-back good games on the road. The gap between his home and road splits is still enormous: 3-1, with a 1.12 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP at home; 0-3 with a 6.16 ERA and a WHIP of 1.500 on the road. Yanks need him to do as he did in his last start against the Angels, 5-6 solid innings, and let the offense and bullpen take it from there. Adding the two splits together, Nestor is having a solid season overall: In 12 starts, he's 3-4 with a 3.39 ERA, good for 19th out of 39 qualified starters. In 71 innings, he's allowed 60 hits, 27 runs, 26 earned, 8 HR, walked just 15 and struck out 67. His WHIP is 13th among the 39 at an excellent 1.056. He's also just outside the top 10 in BB/9 (11th) and K/BB ratio (12th). Like all the Yankees starters, he's been very good lately, pitching very well his last 3 starts, winning the first two, and having a win blown by the bullpen in Anaheim. He's allowed just 2 runs in 17 1/3 innings in those 3 starts, just one home run, striking out 16 and walking 4.
Despite pitching in 7 major league seasons, Nestor has never pitched against the Giants before. They are one of six NL teams Nestor has never faced (Braves, Nationals, Brewers, Cubs and Rockies being the other five). This will be his first start against San Francisco (obviously).

Yankees lineup vs. Snell; relatively extensive PAs in this list, although those who didn't come onto the roster until 2021 or later probably won't have seem him much, if at all...
Volpe has never faced Snell Soto is 0-4 with 2 BB and 4 K(!!...Soto has never put a ball in play vs. Snell) Judge is 1-16 (!!), 1 RBI, 6 BB, 10 K and 1 GIDP Stanton is 2-11 with 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI and 5 K Verdugo is 1-7 with a BB and 2 K LeMahieu is 6-14 with 1 RBI, 4 BB and 2 K Rizzo is 0-4 with 2 BB Torres is 2-13 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB and 4 K Trevino has never faced him
On the bench: None of the bench guys have faced Smell. Whoever did all the hitting against Snell in his early days with Tampa...they're no longer on the team, with the exception of DJ.
===============
Giants' lineup vs. Cortes: The Nasty One has never faced the Giants, but two of them have faced him while with other teams. The obvious one is...
Chapman, who is 3-14 with 1 2B, 2 HR, both solo, 1 BB and 6 K, and the less obvious one is... Soler, who is 0-2 vs. Nestor with 1 BB and 2 K.
The two of them are batting 4-5 today in the Giants' lineup.

Aaron Judge hit another big HR, this one a 2-run shot in the first and the Yanks built an early 4-0 lead on Logan Webb and the Giants, but the Giants cut it to 4-3 in the 5th. The Yanks broke the game open again with 3 in the 8th, the big blow a 2-run HR by Giancarlo Stanton. Meanwhile, Cody Poteet worked hard to make it through 5 innings to qualify for the win, and four relievers each threw a shutout inning to nail it down.
In other East games, the O's battered Rays' starter Taj Bradley for 4 HRs and 9 runs, then rode that outburst to a 9-5 win at Camden Yards. The Pirates knocked around Jays' starter Yusei Kikuchi for 9 hits and 6 runs in 5 1/3 innings, then rode comfortably home behind 6 strong innings from Mitch Keller and a 3 inning save from Luis Ortiz to an 8-1 win over Toronto. The Red Sox scored szix runs scattered across five innings to build a 6-1 lead on the Tigers, then coasted home with a 6-3 win.
At the start of the day today, the Yanks lead the O's by 2 games, the Red Sox by 10 1/2 and the Rays and Jays by 12 1/2. The O's are hot again; they've won 8 of 9 since getting swept by the Cards in St. Louis. The Sox are up-and-down; they've won 2 straight but lost 5 of 7 just before that. The Jays have been playing better lately; the Pirates pushed them around last night, but they had won 8 of 12 before that. The Rays have been very cold lately, having lost 2 in a row and 9 of 12.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The O's lead the Rays 3-0, top 5 at Camden Yards; Cole Irvin trying to pitch the O's to the sweep. The Sox lead the Tigers 3-0, top 5 in Fenway, Bryan Bello trying to win the series for the Sox, they've taken 2 of 3 from Detroit already. The Pirates and Jays are tied, 1-1, top 4 in Toronto; Chris Bassitt trying to win the rubber game from Pittsburgh.
In a little while, it's Cortes vs. Snell at 4:05 in Oracle Park.

Last night's scores, today's scores and the AL East standings lead into the The Sunday Standingsā¢ (Before the start of play today, Sunday, June 2nd). With no Rangers game to distract, I will follow my customary practice of doing the other 5 divisions as we move along with the game, after I update the early East games, and the standings after those games are over.
And that wraps up the preview claptrap for today.
