3rd star of the game: Tonkin, of all people, for two awful-looking but scoreless innings to keep the game close, and earning himself a W when the Yanks rallied with 4 in the 9th.
2nd star of the game: Volpe, for the big triple in the 9th, getting the Yanks to within a run, piling on the pressure on Doval that resulted in the terrible hanging cutter down the middle that...
1st star of the game: ...Soto blasted way out in the 9th, ripping the lead away from the Giants. I mean, bookends, you know? 1st inning HR of Snell to give the Yanks the lead, and the monsterously important HR in the 9th for the lead. For those who fallow WPA (Win Probabliity Added), it's rare for a player to have a WPA over 0.5 for the game, but Soto's HRs gave him a WPA of 0.618 today. Who else could the #1 star be, the narrator said for about the 10th time this season.
And just as we had upvotes all around the room, upvotes go to handful of other Yankees:
Verdugo, for the 2 run triple that tied the game in the 5th. Torres for the leadoff single in the 9th on a tough sinker in on him. Trevino, for hustling his butt off to beat out the DP relay, which was cashed on the Volpe triple. Stanton for the insurance run double up the right center gap. Holmes (for a change) with a no-muss no-fuss 1-2-3 save.

Ok, the Yanks get to relax with a flight home after a superb road trip, then a day off tomorrow.
Then comes a series against a Twins team that lost 7 in a row, but who have rallied for their 9th win in 12 games today.They'll be on a revenge hunt, trying to get even for the sweep the Yanks laid on them in Minnesota 2 1/2 weeks ago. The Twins will pitch two of their top 3 starters but the Yanks will avoid their #2 starter, Joe Kelly, and their solid #5 rookie, Simeon Woods-Richardson.
1st game is Tuesday at 7:08 on YES; Bailey Ober, 5-3 with a 4.89 ERA looks to right his ship after the Royals gave him a pasting in his last start, getting 3 HRs off him and 6 runs in 5 innings in a 6-1 Royals win, throws the first game for the Twins. Luis Gil looks to extend his white-hot run over the last 6 starts (at least 6 innings and no more than 1 run allowed in all of them) for the Yanks. Last time out, he set a career high by going 8 full innings against the Angels, allowing just 2 hits, 2 BB and 1 run while striking out 9.
2nd game is Wednesday at 7:08, the (ugh) inevitable Prime Delayed Video Maim of the Week; Chris Paddack, 4-2 with a 4.57 ERA goes for the Twins. He also got slapped around a bit by the Royals, but had pitched two good games before that one. Carlos Rodon looks to extend his run of good starts, five quality starts in a row, and if the pen had been a bit better in the 3rd game in Anaheim, it would be 5 straight starts of 2 runs or less as well. Rodon is 7-2 on the season with an ERA of 3.09.
3rd game is Thursday at 7:08 back on YES (Yay!); Twins ace Pablo Lopez, 5-5 on the season with a 4.84 ERA, but who pitched a great game his last time out in Houston gainst the Astros after getting hammered by the Nationals and Rangers in the two starts before that one, goes in the series finale. Marcus Stroman will go for the Yanks and try to extend his recent hot run with a 5th straight excellent start. He's 5-2 on the season with a 2.73 ERA.
And with the series preview finished, I go to check notifications.

listened to the game while working in the "fields". got in and watched the highlights of which there were many. what a road trip!! 7-2 on the west coast.
that 9th was something else. soto, soto, soto ... but big hits by volpe & stanton. torres starts it off. judge w an important stolen base. the big guy can do it all. verdugo w a huge double. only DJ and rizzo left out of the party.
cortes struggled w probably the weakest start by a starter in 20 games. still kept us in it. tonkin did the same w 2 scoreless. he's now allowed only 2 runs over his last 9.1 innings. and holmes w a stress free 9th.
lead extended to 3 over O's. for those who weren't believers, maybe it's time to start ...

I like everything I've seen and no other team in the AL really "scares" me. TBD on the Orioles though Yankees looked really bad that series, but Verudgo didn't play 2 games and Judge was not playing like he is now. |
