Ober has been roughed up in 2 of his last 3 starts: 3 GS, 14 IP, 21 H, 13/13 R/ER, 8.36 ERA, 4 BB, 13 K, 5 HR, 1.786 WHIP. Hopefully we can jump on him early and get a nice, comfy win.

At least Dugo back in the cleanup positon.
You know what gameday and a off day have in common? Stanton doesn't play baseball.

The Twins come into the Stadium tonight looking for revenge for the sweep the Yankees handed them in Minnesota that started them on a 7-game losing streak. They've gotten hot since then, winning 9 of 12 coming into this series. Byron Buxton, the very talented and frequently injured centerfielder did not play that series, he was finally activated a little of two weeks ago. The Yanks didn't face him in the series in Minnesota. Tonight they also get back the very talented and frequently injured Royce Lowis, who might be a better hitter than Buxton. Lewis has been on the IL since he got hurt on Opening Day. This will be a much tougher Twins lineup than the one the Yankees' starters basically shut down in the sweep.
Starting the first game for the Twins is Bailey Ober, who was drafted by the Twins in the 12th round in 2017. He pitched well throughout his minor league career, with ERAs under 4 at every level, but he was also injured every season, at least for a while. In 2018, he made just 14 starts and threw just 75 innings. In 2019 at 3 levels, it was 13 starts and 78+ innings. In 2020, like all prospects he had no official innings because the minor league season was droped due to COVID. In 2021, he season was delayed a month by injury, then he made 2 good starts at AAA, the Twins called him to make one bad one, sent him back down for two good ones. They finally recalled him for good in early June, and he made 19 reasonably effective starts, going 3-3 with an ERA of 3.97, but again, just 88+ innings in the 19th starts. In 2022, he was again effective, 3.21 ERA, but injured again, 11 starts and just 56 innings. He was healthy for most of last year, and turned in his best season to date: 26 starts, 8-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 144 innings , though he missed the first four weeks of the season with yet another injury.
This year, so far, he's been healthy enough to stay in rotation from the start, but has not pitched particularly well. He's 5-3 with a 4.89 ERA. In 11 starts, he's pitched 57 innings, allowing 51 hits, 31 runs (all earned), 10 HR, 12 BB and struck out 78. His WHIP is much better than his ERA: 1.105. Ober was hit hard in 2 of his last three starts, by two of the better lineups in the league, the Guardians and Royals. Ober has been in the majors for parts of 4 seasons. He's made 68 starts, but this is his first-ever start against the Yanks.
Repertoire: Ober is now a 5-pitch righty, having made the major change of adding a cutter this season, one which he uses fairly often. To make room for the cutter, he's cut the use of his other 4 pitches more or less equally (all down 4-8%). The mix so far: FB averaging 92 about 39% of the time, change 83 about 24% of the time, cutter 86-7 about 23% of the time, slider 80 about 11 % of the time, and a curve 76-7 about twice a game.

Playing the name game...yet another in a series of boys names to have gained popularity in recent years, there are just two major leagues with first name Bailey. Ober is one, and starter Bailey Falter of the Pirates is the other. So far, Ober has had the better career. There have been 18 MLB players with the last name Bailey, and the two best were the infielder-outfielder Bob Bailey who played for 4 NL teams and briefly for the Red Sox from 1962-1978. He had over 1500 hits, 189 HR and over 750 runs and RBI in his career, and was a backup on the 1976 Reds team that swept the Yanks in the World Series. The other is the catcher Ed Bailey who played for 5 teams from 1953-1966, including the Giants team that lost to the Yanks in the 1962 Series. His offensive numbers weren't as good, but he was a catcher, so their career bWAR numbers are about even. And, yes, for old time fans of Dixieland and jazz, there were two players in MLB history with the name Bill Bailey, allowing their wives to complain every time they went on a road trip: (Won't You Come Home) Bill Bailey. As I said the first time when I thought he was going to start against the Yanks in the first series, there has been an Oberg, an Oberkfell, an Obermueller, an Oberlin, an Oberbeck, and an Oberholzer in MLB history, but Bailey is the only Ober.

The Yanks send Luis Gil to the mound to try to extend his white hot run, and the Yanks 5-game winning streak. He's thrown six brilliant games in a row, all at least 6 innings, all with no more than one run allowed. He's won all six, and his ERA in the six starts is 0.70 and his WHIP is 0.67. On the season, he's now 7-1 with a 1.99 ERA. He's tied for 2nd in the AL in wins with Carlos Rodon and Tarik Skubal and he's 4th in ERA. He leads the league in lowest hits/9 innings at 4.12, 3rd in K's per 9 at 11.226 and 6th in K's with 79, and he's 7th in pitcher bWAR at 2.3. His lone blemish continues to be contol, although that's improved greatly in the last 6 starts. He still leads the league in BB/9 at 4.4, but it's just 2.79 in the last 6 starts, and he's 4th in total BB, though he was leading the league early in the season. Despite the still high cumulative walk rate, his microscopic hit rate has him 3rd in the AL in WHIP.
Gil didn't pitch againt the Twins in Minneapolis, but he had a bad start against them in 2021. He went six innings, allowing 7 hits, 5 runs (all earned) 3 HR, 1 BB and 6 K, but got a no-decision in a game at the Stadium in mid-September, because the Yanks raillied to tie it on a three run HR in the 8th by Judge, before walking it off in the 10th on a RBI single by Gary Sanchez to win 6-5. It's just 24 batters but his WHIP against the Twins is 1.333, his ERA is 7.50, and their quadruple slash line against Gil is .280/.308/.640/.948

Last night the Yanks, Red Sox and Rays had the night off. The Jays' Kevin Gausman stayed in for 6 1/3 innings against Baltimore, but the O's knocked him around for 6 hits, 3 BB, 3 HR and 6 earned runs while coasting to a 7-3 win, with Grayson Rodriguez proving 6 2/3 innings of 2-run ball.
As a result of the O's, win, they closed to 2 1/2 back of the Yanks, while the Jays fell to 13 games out of 1st. The Red Sox and Rays continue to be 10 1/2 and 11 1/2 back of the Yanks, respectively
Elsewhere in the AL East today: the Rays stay in-state, going to Miami to open a series against the Marlins at 6:40 pm: Ryan Pepiot, 3-2 3.88 ERA for the Rays, Jesus Luzardo, 2-4 4.18 ERA for Miami. The O's and Jays play the 2nd game of their series in Toronto at 7:07 pm. O's ace Corbin Burnes, 5-2 2.35 ERA will oppose the Jays' Trevor Richards, making his first "start" of the season. Richards is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in 28 1/3 innings of relief. The Red Sox host a weakened Braves team to start their series at 7:10 pm. Max Fried, off to a great start at 5-2 2.98 ERA for Atlanta; Kutter Crawford, 2-4 3.29 ERA for the Sox.

I thought we'd get Cone for this series since his ESPN game last Sunday was in Philly, but it appears his YES workload has decreased big time.
