Looks that way. Dodgers will be a stern test this weekend. We are the Godzilla of the baseball world! Hopefully, the Yanks can defeat the King Kong of the baseball world.

For reasons known only to the Almighty, Santana is still in to start the 8th. FB below middle fouled, 0-1 Slider outside middle, hammered to deep left, Verdugo has no shot, one hops to the wall for a leadoff double. The Jonathan Davis of the bullpen.

And which of the four DHs, Soto? He might not care for that. And you're right, I don't know why I vapor lock on Dominguez' name so often, but I do. So...it was just about this time last year when Judge got hurt. As I recall, you felt he shouldn't have gone 100% that early in the season in a "meaningless" game. Do you feel Verdugo should've pulled up on that play? Oh, and to repeat myself, I NEVER said that game was meaningless, just not meaningful enough to risk a season-ending or career-ending injury in. No regular season game is "meaningless", but some are clearly more important than others. A few are vastly more important (end of the season in a tight playoff race).

Stanton takes a slider low Then gets a slider hanging in the middle, drives it to the gap in right center, Stanton not running hard around 1st, though it's hard to tell with him, and he goes for 2nd, and Buxton throws him on what would have been a double for anyone else, 2 down. I know everyone loves the HRs but the low batting avg, not playing OF, and zero running or hustle because of injury concerns is WHY I just can't. With Stanton, his runing skill is so diminished it's hard to tell when he's running full out, but it appeared to me he didn't "turn on" what little he has left until he saw it go to the wall. Not good enough against a glove and arm like Buxton, who's had his own myriad injury problems.

Keep going to right, Volpe, look slider or sinker away and go with it. He didn't listen And then he did in the 9th, for the triple.

The Yankees aren't just beating bad teams. The Philles have the best winning percentage against teams over .500 at .778, but have played just 9 games against such teams, and they're 7-2 against them. The Yanks are now 17-8 against teams over .500, and would be percentage points "behind", while being "1 game ahead". The O's are 12-6, which is why the SRS (Simple Rating System) at Baseball Reference has the Yanks first in MLB at +1.6, the O's 2nd at +1.4, and the Phils in 3rd at +1.2; because the Yanks have played more games against teams over .500 and the most wins.

No regular season game is "meaningless", but some are clearly more important than others. A few are vastly more important (end of the season in a tight playoff race). OK…so let’s first address the play Verdugo made tonight. For starters, your assertion that Verdugo pulled up is incorrect. He never broke stride, and, in fact, he ran into the wall as he made the catch. As Flaherty said…”he was able to hold on as he crashes into the wall”. Coincidentally, tonight’s game was played almost exactly one year to the day from the game in LA in which Judge was injured, at a point in the season in which you felt was less important than potentially a game played toward the end of the season. We have no way of knowing how “important” a game is at this point in the season. In fact, games won at this point in the season could be the difference between the Yanks being in a tight playoff race or cruising to the division title with an insurmountable lead, making games played at the end of the season less important. Players will and should give their best effort on each and every play, just as Verdugo did tonight and Judge did last year, and any criticism of them for doing so is unjustified.

Tonkin is amazing, isn’t he?… He's getting outs and actually getting better the more he pitches. He turned that one bat into sawdust tonight. By now I figured he’d have been in Toledo with 6.00 ERA…

The Yankees aren't just beating bad teams. This, and the fact that we’ve played a LOT of road games all ready give me a lot of hope for the season…

that's just how ballplayers are wired. they're in the moment, tracking the ball, trying to make a play and if they think can, they're gonna try. neither verdugo, judge (or soto) thought of pulling up for a second. to them, every play of every game is important and they're gonna do whatever they have to help their team win.

Tonkin is amazing, isn’t he?… He's getting outs and actually getting better the more he pitches. when he first got here, cringed every time he came in. his stuff is not impressive but somehow he's been getting the job done. 2 runs in 10.1 innings w a .162 BAA. don't wanna see him in big spots but when innings need to be eaten in non-critical spots, he's been ok. santana on the other hand ...
