I hope Verdugo is just getting a day's rest and wasn't hurt yesterday? He looked fine during his post game interview last night.

Going to a 5 year old t-ball game at 6:15 today. Really looking forward to it.
Do they have a DH that doesn't play the field or have to run the bases at 100% in T-Ball or is that only on the Yankees? Asking for a friend.

The Twins try to avoid getting swept by sending their notional ace, Pablo Lopez, out to face the Yankees this evening. I gave a detailed history of Lopez when he started against the Yanks three weeks ago, so no need to rehash that. In the 3 starts since, he's been pummeled by both the Nationals and the Rangers, but in his last start against Houston, he pitched an outstanding game. Since that 4-0 loss to the Yanks his ERA has gone from 3.93 to 4.84. In 12 starts so far this year, he's 5-5 with that 4.84 ERA. In 67 innings, he's allowed 66 hits, 37 runs (36 earned) 12 HR, just 11 BB and struck out 75. Because of the low BB rate, his WHIP is just 1.149 despite allowing nearly a hit an inning.
Including the loss to the Yanks 3 weeks ago, he's now 0-2 vs. the Yanks with an ERA of 2,95. In 3 starts, he's pitched 18 1/3 innings, allowed 24 hits, 9 runs (all earned), 2 HR, just 2 BB and struck out 14. Because of the high hit rate, his WHIP againist the Yanks is a subpar 1.418. The Yanks quadruple slash line against him looks like Luis Arraez' career record, minus perhaps two walks: .316/.346/.447/.793. Last time out, they got him for 10 hits but only 3 runs in 6 1/3 innings, none after the 3rd inning. He gave up a solo HR to Judge, but struck out 3 without walking a batter. Stroman, Weaver and Ferguson combined to shut out the Twins on 4 hits in the 4-0 Yankees win.
Repertoire: Lopez limited the damage against the Yanks last time. If he had pitched another bad game against the Astros, I'd expect major changes in his pitch mix, but he may have already made them before facing Houston. To date, in 12 starts, the 4-pitch righty's pitch mix is: FB (really, as usual, a 4-seamer and a 2-seamer, but the 4-seamer is only a little bit faster, 94.6 to 94.2) averaging 94-5 about 47 % of the time, slider 84 about 22%, change 88-9 about 19%, and a curve 82 about 12% of the time. In his first game against the Yanks, he threw 37 fastballs, the ratio was 27 to 10 of 4-seamers vs 2-seamers.
Playing the name game...I did this for him 3 weeks ago. Nine Pablo's in MLB history, the best one probably Pablo Sandoval, a key part of the Giants three World Seriees winning teams in 2010-12-14, and 30 Lopezes, the most famous being catcher Javy, pitcher Aurelio and Hall of Fame Manager Al Lopez, who won the two AL pennants in the 1950s that the Yanks didn't.

The Yanks send Marcus Stroman out to try for a season-high 8th win in a row, a series sweep, and a season's sweep of 6 games from the Twins. As with the first two Yankee starters in this series, Stroman's been hot laterly, pitching four outstanding games in row coming into this one. He's now 5-2 on the season with an ERA of 2.73, which was 7th in the AL before the start of play today. In 12 starts, he's pitch 69 1/3 innings allowed 56 hits, 24 runs, 21 earned, 8 HR, 29 BB, with 55 K. The low K rate, high BB rate and poor K/BB rate aren't great, but he's been able to maneuver around them so far. Among 38 qualified starters, his walk rate is 7th worst, his K rate is 6th worst, his K/BB ratio is 4th worst, and his K-BB% is 3rd worst. So far this hasn't kept him from pitching great the last 4 games.
His most recent start vs. the Twins was the win that started that hot streak, and it was probably the weakest of the 4 starts: 6 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 3 BB and just 2 K's. This will be the 8th start of his career against Minnesota, and he hasn't pitched well agains them: 2-4, 4.90 ERA. In 40 innings, he's allowed 44 hits, 23 runs, 22 earned, 5 HR and 11 BB, with just 24 K's. His WHIP against them is a mediocre 1.375, and the Twins' team quadruple slash line against him is .278/.324/.463/.786.

Last night the Yanks got to Paddack for 4 runs in the first, then he knocked himself out in the 5th by walking the bases loaded. Aaron Judge greeted reliever Diego Castill with a 3 run triple, and although reliever Dennis Sanata got slapped around a bit, the Yanks had enough runs to withstand and win comfortably 9-5. Carlos Rodon had his 6th straight quality start for his 6th straight win. The win was the Yanks 7th in a row, tying their season high, put them a season high 24 games over .500, and won the series. They've now gone 11 series without losing one, and have won 24 of their last 30 games.
In other AL East games: Embedded Yankee Isiah Kiner-Falefa got a walkoff single off of Craig Kimbrel to give the Jays a 3-2 win over the Orioles. Nick Pivetta and two relievers combined for a 1-hitter with 11 K's against an Acuna-less, but still potent Braves lineup, and Rafael Devers hit a pair of HR and knocked in 3, as the Red Sox whitewashed the Braves 9-0 at Fenway. Austin Riley's flyball single leading off the 4th was the sole hit for the Braves. The Rays won their 3rd straight and 2nd in a row over the hapless Marlins, scoring 5 runs in the first there innings, and five relievers combined to allow just 1 run in the last 5 innings to make those runs stand up for a 5-3 win over Miami
As of this morning, the Yanks led the O's by a season-high tying 3 1/2 games. The Rays and Red Sox were in a flat-footed tie for 3rd-4th at 30-31, 12 1/2 games back of the Yanks. Despite the Jays' clutch win over the Orioles, they remain in the basemant, 14 games behind New York.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Jays built up a 6-1 lead on the O's through six innings, but got a scare when the O's got a 2 run HR in the 8th on a two run HR by Adley Rutschman and another 2 run HR in the 9th by Ryan O'Hearn against temporary closer Yimi Garcia (Regular closer Jason Romano went on the IL again earlier this week), but held on when Garcia got Kyle Stowers to chase a diving change well low for the K to end it. The Red Sox get their turn to shoot fish in a barrel, uh, I mean go to Chicago to play a 4-game series with the White Sox, who come in on a 13-game losing streak. The first game of the series starts at 8:10 pm; Tanner Houck 5-5 with a 1.85 ERA that's behind only the Yanks' Luis Gil in the AL, pitches for the Sox and career mediocrity Jake Woodford, 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA makes his 2nd start for the Pale Hose. The Rays and Jays have today off. Starting tomorrow, the Rays head home to face the O's in a three-game series this weekend, and the Jays fly to the West Coast to play 3 games in the Coliseum against the A's.
With the O's losing, they temporarily fall 4 games back of the Yanks, and for the moment, that's now the biggest lead the Yanks have had this year. The O's went into last night's game with the Jays having won 10 of 12, but gained no ground because the Yanks had won 11 of 13. The Jays gain a half game and are now 13 1/2 behind the Yanks. The Sox and Rays stay where they are, tied for 3rd and 12 1/2 back, at least until the Yanks finish their series finale.
In a little while, it's Lopez vs. Stroman at 7:08 at the Stadium.

Cutter misses just inside, called a strike on Kiriloff, 0-1 Cutter right down the middle, fouled off, 0-2 Cutter into the top in the middle, fouled off. Slider down and in, Kiriloff can't check in time, home ump rings him up, K. 2 down.
