From MLB Trade Rumors:
"The Guardians announced Friday afternoon that outfielder Estevan Florial cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. Florial accepted an outright assignment and will report to Triple-A Columbus. He remains in the organization without holding a spot on the 40-man roster.
Acquired from the Yankees over the offseason, Florial broke camp with Cleveland despite a rough Spring Training. His offensive struggles carried into the regular season. Florial tallied 111 trips to the plate but limped to a .173/.264/.367 line while striking out 36.9% of the time. After hitting three home runs in the season’s first month, he turned in a .120/.200/.240 slash in 55 trips to the plate during May."
For any hitting prospect, the hit tool is always the most important tool, and Florial simply doesn't have one, or rather, a good enough one. A AAAA-hitter is probably all he'll ever be.

Well, I guess this proves the Yankee brass was right and we were hoping for lightning out of a 1.5v battery…

At least Florial could maybe get down a bunt. Bunting is another lost art in today's game. Evidently, analytics show that a sacrifice bunt is counterproductive. That may be true most of the time, but it's undeniable that it's the best move in a situation like last night's.

Don’t scare me like that qwik. I was expecting something much worse. 😆 Sorry about that, kaybli. Looking at the thread title a reader could misinterpret it as announcing someone had passed on. If you like, you can alter the thread title (I assume as moderator you can do this) to "Expected, but sad (Florial sent to minors again).

Most of the time, it slightly increases the chances of scoring 1 run, but the runs expectation matrix shows it decreaes the chance of scoring multiple runs. So as a tactic, it's fine in the late innings of a tied game, when one run is likely decisive, but counterproductive at other times, especially in the early innings, when neither side knows for sure how many runs are needed to win that game.

Yankee brass is paying 5 million to get about the same production from Grisham. At least Florial could maybe get down a bunt. Actually, when Grisham's ability to consistently hit vanished in 2022, he must've learned how to bunt. He had 7 sac bunts for the Padres in 2022, 3rd in the NL, and 4 more last season, tied for 10th. Florial (in far fewer PA) has only one sac bunt in his MLB career, this April in a game against the Red Sox, and just 9 in over 3000 PA in the minors. Didn't help the Yanks last night, of course. Update to original reply: Florial also had 1 bunt base hit in 245 MLB plate appearances. Grisham has 18 just over 2000 PA. Again, didn't help last night.
