Is that a misprint or is Grisham really batting 5th? No, your eyes do not deceive you. Against a lefty. Against a power lefty who K's a ton of guys. Against a power lefty who K's a ton of guys, and whom he's never batted against. Why? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Boone and Cashman's stat geek crew in the front office have jumped the shark.

The Dodgers send out elite starter Tyler Glasnow to try to complete the sweep against the Yanks. Drafted by the Pirates in the fifth round in 2011, he's one of many pitchers who were prospects that the Pirates have passed through their organzation, some elite and some ordinary or less than that, none of whom fulfulled their potential with Pittsburgh in the last 10-12 seasons. (Whether uber-rookie Paul Skenes can overcome this jinx/misdevelopment is to be seen, but he's got as good a chance as anyone since Gerrit Cole.) It took him 5 years to reach the majors, even with good-to-outstanding ERAs, very low hit rates, low HR rates and very high K rates, because his walk rate was extremely high at every level and because he could never get through an entire season without suffering an injury, most of them minor. Everyone could see the potential; overpowering FB and wipeout curve, rudimentary change. He was top 40 on all the major prospect lists in after 2013 and top 20 on all lists after 2014 and 2015.
Having pitched well at AA and AAA in 2016, the Pirates called him up in July for a couple of starts. He didn't pitch badly, but his command problems forced him out on the 5th and 3rd innings, so they sent him back down. He got recalled in September for two more starts and 3 relief games, and did OK. He was again top 25 on all the major prospect lists.
In 2017, he opened the season in the Pirates rotation and pitched so badly in 12 starts, Pittsburgh sent him back to AAA. He again pitched lights out in 15 AAA starts, so they called him back up in September to get blasted in another start. The Pirates had seen enough for now, so they stuck Glasnow in the bullpen for two more games to finish out the year...and it was then that the Pirates Pirated. They kept him in relief to start the season. The did have a decent rotation fronted by Cole, Trevor Williams, Ivan Nova and another good prospect, Joe Musgrove, so this was understandable...if they intended to do the old Earl Weaver thing, let him pitch 2-4 innings once or twice a week for a couple of months to gain command of his elite stuff, and then put him in the rotation. But they didn't. They turned him into a hard throwing two pitch set up reliever, perhaps trying to turn him into a closer. He was mediocre in the role, and at the trade deadline, being just 2 1/2 out of a wild card, they made Glasnow available in their search for a reliable starter.

As Yankees fans well know, the Rays live for situations like that, having struck gold multiple times doing exactly this: trading a solid starter about to get expensive for a pitching prospect who will replace that starter and then some plus whatever else they can pick the pockets of the other team in the trade for.So the Rays took advantage of an idiot GM again, so they traded a solid but not particularly great Chris Archer, and took Glasnow in return. And Austin Meadows. And a player to be named later who turned into the oft-injured Shane Baz. Meadows had one great and one solid season for the Rays before his service time got up there, and they traded him for...Isaac Paredes. (Baz hasn't been able to make it big so far, he was great in the Rays system and in 3 starts late in 2021, but he tore his UCL in 2022 and is still trying to make it back from Tommy John surgery, and is struggling at AAA; a minority of pitchers are never the same after TJ surgery. Right now Baz is pitching poorly at AAA for the Rays. But I digress.) The trade was a masterpiece for the Rays and a disaster for the Pirates. Archer was OK for then in 2018 and a disaster in 2019, so they let Archer go.
Meanwhile the Rays were able to finally get Glasnow's control problems under...ummm...control. What they couldn't do was keep him off the IL. From 2019 to 2023, Glasnow was 26-11 for Tampa with a .303 ERA, 6.4 hits per 9, 2.8 BB's 9 and 12.5 BB per 9. He was a top of the rotation starter for them whenever he stepped on the fired. The problem was, in almost 4 1/2 seasons for the Rays, he could make less than 2 full seasons worth of starts: just 60 of them, and just 333 2/3 innings. The most starts and innings he had for Tampa was 21 and 120, both last season. With the cheap part of his contract ending in 2023 and the expensive back-end about to kick in ($5 million for 2023, $25 million for 2024), they traded him to the Dodgers. For a good pitching prospect who's expected to become a top of the rotation starter (as usual) in Ryan Pepiot and a decent OF prospect, Johnny DeLuca.
And this year, the Dodgers appear to have found the magic formula, for not only is Glasnow brilliant again, but he's stayed healthy, at least for now. In 13 starts, he's 6-4 with a 2.93 ERA. In 80 innings, he's allowed just 46 hits, 26 runs, all earned, 8 HR, 23 BB and has already struck out 104. His WHIP is an outstanding 0.900. Right now, in the NL pitching leaders, he's 8th in bWAR, 8th in ERA, tied for 8th in wins, 2nd in WHIP, 2nd in starts, 4th in innings, 1st in lowest hits per 9, 2nd in K's per 9, 7th in K/BB ration and leads all of MLB in K's. In short, the task doesn't get any easier for the Yanks' lineup than it was the first two games.

Why? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Boone and Cashman's stat geek crew in the front office have jumped the shark. Maybe they're going total anti-logic, because rational analysis leaves them at a disadvantage anyway. It shouldn't work, but they figure, what the hell, a conventional lineup with Soto shouldn't work anyway.

Tonight will be Glasnow's 10th start against the Yanks. He's pitched very well against them: in 9 starts, he's 4-2 with a 2.74 ERA. In 49 1/3 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 18 runs, 15 earned, 4 HR, walked 21 and struck out 63. His WHIP against the Yanks is 1.054, and their quadruple slash line against him is a very poor .152/257/.272/.530. He made two starts against them last year and shut them down cold twice: He won both games, 5-1 and 3-0, going 13 innings, allowing just 4 hits, 1 run, a solo HR by Jake Bauers of all people in the 1st game at the Stadium in late July, 4 BB and struck out 12.
Repertoire: A very tall lefty (6-8) with a power arm...about 3 years ago, Glasnow basically junked his change and cut the use of the curve and fastball, adding a slider, which is now his 2nd pitch. Like almost every starter, he throws the sinker and the 4-seamer, the sinker about 1 mph slower on average and used about 1/3 as often as the 4-seamer. The pitch mix so far this season: the two fastballs averaging 96-7 together about 57% of the time, the slider 89 about 26% of the time and the curve 84 aboout 17% of the time.

Playing the name game...Tyler again, as with Anderson, there are scores of Tylers who've played in MLB, most of them starting their careers after 2000. Glasnow is the best of them, to date. He's the only Glasnow in MLB history.

Luis Gil will try to stem the tide and help the Yanks avoid being swept. In many ways he's a lot like Glasnow, at least results-wise. He has been more than great the last 7 starts, almost unhittable. He's gone at least 6 in all of those starts, winning them all (even against the O's in Baltimore, the first of the seven starts). He hasn't allowed more than one run in any of them. He's struck 2/3 more hitters than he's permitted to reach via hit or BB in the seven starts. His WHIP and ERA in those starts are both below 0.70. On the season, Gil is 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA. In 12 starts, he's pitched 69 1/3 innings, allowed just 30 hits, 15 runs, 14 earned, 4 HR, 34 BB and struck out 85. His WHIP is 0.923. As with Glasnow, Gil has made multiple high marks on the pitching leaders bords in his league: 6th in pitcher bWAR, 1st in ERA, tied for 2nd in wins, 3rd in WHIP despite the high BB rate, 1st in lowest hits per 9, 4th in lowest HR per 9. The sole blemish remains the high BB rate and total overall, he's been much better on both counts in the last seven starts. The Dodgers are the 2nd of those 6 NL teams that Gil has never pitched against. I hope his not in for a rude awakening. Pro tip to Luis: please don't throw Betts a FB inner half on the 1st pitch of the game.

Last night, the Yanks were dominated by Teoscar Hernandez, 2 HR including the grand slam off Kahnle in the 6th that put the game out of reach. They tacked on enough runs to force Boone to let Oswaldo Cabrera pitch the 9th. Stone pitched out of several jams; the Yanks left 10 runners on base, going 0-7 with RISP, Judge hit 2 solo HR, the early one mattered, the late one was just stat-padding. All in all, perhaps their worst loss this season, featuring terrible clutch hitting, multiple fielding blunders and far too much bad pitching, an embarassing 11-3 rout at the hands of the Dodgers. The loss was the Yanks 2nd in a row, and they lost their first series in the last 11. They dropped back to 24 over .500 on the season at 45-21.
Also yesterday, the O's edged closer to the Yanks as they took their 2nd straight from the Rays; Kyle Bradish and two relievers combined on a 2-hit, 14-K shutout, 5-0. They've won 12 of their last 16; the Rays have lost 11 of their last 16. The White Sox dropped the Red Sox for the 2nd straight time in Chicago. Nick Nastrini had help from 4 relievers, holding the Sox to 5 hits with 13 K in a 6-1 win. The bullpen went the last 4 2/3, giving up just 3 hits and striking out 8. The Jays got an ace performance from Kevin Gausman, a complete game 5-hit shutout, striking out 10, in a 7-0 win over the A's in Oakland. The Jays used a solo HR, 3 doubles, a single and 2 BB to break it open with a 5-run 5th.
As of this morning, the Yanks now lead the O's by 2 1/2 games. The Red Sox are in 3rd, 12 1/2 back. The Rays and Jays are tied for 4th-5th, 13 games out of 1st.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The O's demolished the Rays in Tampa, 9-2, sweeping the series. Adley Rutschman drove in 6th and ended all resistence with a grand slam in the 8th, putting it out of reach. The Red Sox rallied in the 9th to tie the game on a sac fly, and pushed across 2 in the 10th to take the series finale in Chicago, 6-4 over the White Sox. Jarren Duran scored 3 run, had another triple, his MLB leading 10th, drew a BB and stole his 15th base for the BoSox. Kenley Jensen pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out 5 for the win, and some guy I never heard of named Cam Booser came in for a 1-2-3 10th with 2 K's for the save. I guess we'll all see Mr. Booser next weekend in Fenway to find out what he's about. As for the Jays, right now they're in a tight one at the Coliseum in Oakland, top 9, tied at 3. The A's rallied for two in the 7th to take a 3-2 lead, but the Jays tied it in the 8th.
As of the moment, the Yanks lead the O's by just 2 games, the Sox by 12, the Jays by 13 (pending the outcome of their game) and the Rays are for the moment, back in the cellar, 13 1/2 back.
In about 60 minutes, it's Glasnow vs. Gil at the Stadium.
I'll do the usual Sunday Standings© in-between innings of the Yankees game, starting with updating these after the Jays game is over. I'm going to make dinner, see you guys later.

ESPN was supposed to have a 90 minute pregame show for tonight's game but it was all wiped away by a Clemson/Florida baseball game that won't end.

The Jays got 3 in the 10th, the A's got their ghost runner home and no more, and the Jays beat the A's 6-4.
So coming into tonight's game, the Yanks lead the O's by 2 games, the Red Sox by 12, the Jays have hopped over the Rays back into 4th, 12 1/2 back, and the Rays take over the basement, 13 1/2 out of 1st.
