And all of Bronx Bombers Message Board takes a collective sigh of relief seeing “Juan Soto RF” No sigh of relief here. I've seen too many players return from minor "forearm tightness" and the next thing you know they're going in for TJS. I'll breathe a sigh of relief in November.

I guess we don't know when Dominguez will be 100% and I don't care about Stanton's 14 HRs. Judge, Soto, Dugo, Dominguez with someone rotating DH is what I want to see. I don't care about having to root for Stanton because he wears the uniform. He does not make this team better. This is sicking that we have at least 3 possible young Ofs in the minors that can get a shot but we are forced to watch a K machine that doesn't play or run because of his contract.

And all of Bronx Bombers Message Board takes a collective sigh of relief seeing “Juan Soto RF” I don't mind Soto at DH and the Verdugo-Grisham-Judge outfield. Defensively that's the Yankees best OF alignment. We're certainly happy Soto is back in the lineup.

The Royals turn to tall righty Brady Singer to try to even the series against the Yanks. Drafted by the Royals with the 18th pick of the 1st round in 2018. A big time college pitcher at Florida, the Royals moved him rapidly through their system. He spent the rest of 2018 in instructional camp, but they started him pitching at High-A and AA in 2019. He pitched well at both levels, compiling a 2.87 ERA in 26 starts. The Royals decided that was enough minor league experience, and after spending the pre-season months of the COVID year of 2020 in developmental camp, he opened that season in their rotation and stayed there, making 12 starts and pitching moderately well: 4-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 64 1/3 innings. In 2021, he was in the rotation from the start, but again was only so-so, and many of his starts were very short, even if he wasn't getting hit particularly hard. In his first 18 starts, he failed to make it through 4 innings in 7 of them; in 3 of the 7, he gave up just 1 or 2 runs, but manager Matheny felt he needed to take him out anyway. In his 19th start, the Orioles beat him up for 8 hits, and 7 earned runs in 2+ innings (and that O's team lost 110 games was 14th in the AL in runs). At that point, Singer was 3-7 with a 5.12 ERA, so the Royals sent Singer back to AAA to regroup. He made two starts there, then was called back up. From that point to the end of 2021, he made 8 starts, and was slightly better: 2-3 with a 4.48 ERA.
The next year, he started in the pen, and after 3 appearances was sent to AAA to stretch out his arm for a return to the rotation. He made 3 starts there, and was called back up and insterted in the rotation in mid-May. From that point to the end of the season, he did very well. He was the Royals' best starter, going 10-5 with a 3.23 ERA for a team that lost 97 games. It seemed as if Singer had figured things out at the major-league level, but for no apparent reason, his pitching reversed and collapsed last year, right from the start. He was brutal in just about every way, except for his HR rate. He allowed more than a hit an inning, his BB and K rates got worse. He wound up 8-11 with a 5.52 ERA before being shut down in mid-Septemer with a minor back injury.
And so far this year, again for no apparent reason (except maybe the Royals team around him is much better), his fortunes have reversed again. In 12 starts, he's 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA (if he had 2 more innings, he'd be qualified for the ERA lead, and would be sitting 7th in the AL, just ahead of Carlos Rodon). In 65 1/3 innings, he's allowed 59 hits, 22 runs, 20 earned, 7 HR, 20 BB and struck out 66. His WHIP is a solid 1.209, down from a miseable 1.447 last year. He's pitched well in 9 of his 12 starts, going at least 5 innings and allowing 2 runs or less. In his last start against the Guardians brought back the bad old days: he allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in 3 2/3 inning, but gave up 9 hits a BB and a HR, and manager Quataro did the right thing, because the Royals came back to win 4-2 to gain a game on the team they're chasing in the Central.
Singer's record against the Yanks is solid, nothing more. In 4 starts against them, he's 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA. In 20 2/3 innings, he's allowed 21 hits, 9 runs, all earned, 2 HR, and 10 BB, while striking out 26. His K/9 against them is 11.5, the highest for any AL opponent, but the Yanks have had a lot of high K rate hitters in recent years. His WHIP against New York is 1.525, and the Yankee team quadruple slash line against him is .273/.360/.390/.749. His last start against the Yankees was late July at the Stadium last year, and it was a good one: 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 BB and 9 K's. The Yanks rallied late to win, 5-2. Repertoire: Singer is a slider/sinker 4-pitch righty. He throws both the 4-seamer and the 2-seamer, both near 92 mph, and he uses about 3 times as many 2-seamers as 4-seamers. His velo is below average and his spin rate is average, but because of his height and excellent "extension" his fastballs play up somewhat. He gets some extra whiffs and a lot of grounders for that reason. The 4-seamer is a new thing this year; he rately used it before, and maybe that's why his K rate is a career high. To make room for it, he's using the sinker less and the change use has dropped by half. The mix so far this season: Sinker at 92 about 40% of the time, 4-seamer at 92 about 13% of the time, slider at 83 about 43% of the time, and the change 88 about once every 2 innings. He might use more of them tonight against the Yanks.

Playing the name game...another boy's name that has become somewhat more popular in recent decades, there are 6 other Bradys in MLB history, among them, the earliest is the best: Brady Anderson, the OF for the Orioles and Indians who had one of the great outlier seasons of all tim; 50 HRs in 1996, making the All-Star team for the 1st of 3 times, and getting downballot MVP votes for the 1st of 2 times. He never had a season in which he hit half as many HR before or after nor a season in which he slugged over .500 or knocked in 100 or more runs. There have actually been more players with the last name Brady, 12 in all, but none of them were very significant. None of them lasted 10 years in the majors, or even made an All-Star team. Most of their careers were 1-3 years long. The opposite is true of the last name Singer; there's only one other in MLB history, and it was the solid lefty staring pitcher Bill Singer, who was 118-127 in his 14 seasons, compiling a career ERA of 3.39 and twice winning 20 games, making the All-Star team both years.

Marcus Stroman will try to bounce back from his most recent start, a poor one vs. the Twins in which the Yanks gave him a big lead, but they hit him hard enough so that couldn't survive 5 innings to qualify for the win. Before that, he had thrown 4 straight outstanding games in which only a blown save by Holmes prevented Stroman from winning all four. In 13 starts this season, he's 5-2 with a solid 3.04 ERA, sitting 9th among qualified starting pitchers in the AL. In 74 innings, he's allowed 61 hits, 29 runs, 25 earned, 31 BB and has struck out 57. His WHIP is 1.242, right around the AL league average: 1.237. He's 5th in the league in most walks allowed, and seems to pitch into and out of trouble in 2 or 3 innings a start. A key here is his high ground ball rate; 3rd highest among 34 qualified AL starters, as is his GB/FB ratio. Because of that, he's tied for 4th in the AL with 9 GIDP hit off him.
Stroman has pitched well against the Royals in his career. In 5 prior starts, he's 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA. In 30 innings, he's allowed 23 hits, 10 runs, all earned, with 3 HR, 7 BB and 25 K. His WHIP against them is an excellent 1.000, and the Royals team quadruple slash line against him is .211/.256/.349/.605. Not sure how relevant those career numbers are, because he hasn't faced them since 2019, when he left early, giving up 4 hits, 3 earned runs and a HR in just 4 innings to get a no-decision when the Jays took him off the hook by scoring 4 in the 5th on their way to a 7-5 win in a game in Toronto in late June.

Last night, with Judge, Stanton and Rizzo benched, the Yanks eschewed (there's a nice 60-cent SAT word for ya) their usual longball tactics for some smallball with 3 bunt attempted, including a saftey squeeze for a run, and got just enough done to scratch out 4 runs off of Royals ace Lugo. Carlos Rodon shut them down for 1 run in 7 innings, and Ace Closer Tonkin™!! " slammed the door" in the 9th inning for his first save for the Yanks in a 4-2 win. The win was the Yanks 2nd in a row, 10th in 12 games and their 26th in the last 34. They moved back to a season-high 26 games over .500 at 47-21.
Also last night, The O's DID complete their 4-game sweep their series with the Rays, in a very pedestrial 5-2 win. O's ace Corbin Burnes threw 7 innings, giving up just 2 unearned runs, and relievers Cano and Kimbrel each struck out 2 and walked 1 in their indiving hitless innings to wrap it up. The big hit was a 2-run double by Ryan O'Hearn in the 5th that broke a 2-2 tie. In Milwaukee, Colin Ray outpitched Jays' starter Jose Berrios, throwing 7 innings of 3-hit 1-run ball to get the W in a 3-1 Brewers win. Struggling rookie Jackson Chourio tied the game at 1 with a solo HR in the 3rd, his 7th of the season, and Willy Adames gave the Brewers the lead for good with a solo HR of his own in the 4th. Payamps and Megill pitched an inning each to nail it down for Milwaukee. The Red Sox had the day off.
As of this morning, the Yanks still lead the O's by 2 1/2 games. The Red Sox are in 3rd, 13 back. The Jays are back in 4th, 14 games back, and the Rays are in the basement, 15 full games out of 1st.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The O's finally get a tough opponent for what seems the first time in weeks: the Braves come in for a three-game series starting at 6;35 pm. Max Fried, red-hot after a rough first 4 starts (5-2 with a 1.57 ERA his last 8 games, 2 complete games and 1 shutout among them) will face off against Albert Suarez, back in the majors for the first time since 2017 and pitching very well. In 6 starts and 7 relief appearances, he's 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA. The O's got a 3-run HR from Jorge Mateo in the 2nd and lead the Braves 3-0, top 4.
The Rays, having been swept by the O's and having lost 13 of 19, welcome another slumping team, the Cubs, to the EnigmaDome™ for a 3-game series in Tampa starting at 6:50 pm. The Cubs won Sunday, but had lost 20 out of 30 before that. Ex-Yankee Jameson Taillon has pitched poorly after a great start to his season, will throw for Chicago; he's 3-2 on the season with a 3.47 ERA, but is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in his last 5 starts. The Rays start Zack Eflin, with a microscopic BB rate that has exaggerated his AL league-leading K/BB ratio, is 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA. That game is 0-0 in the 3rd.
The Red Sox are at Fenway, but get a very tough visitor, the Phillies, who are "1/2 game behind" the Yanks but lead MLB in winning percentage at .692. The 3-game series starts at 7:10 pm in Boston. Philles ace Zack Wheeler, 7-3 2.23 ERA is opposed by Kutter Crawford, 2-5 3.51 ERA. That game is 1-1 top 2nd, Schawarber's leadoff HR was matched by Refsnyder's sac fly.
Finally, the Jays play their 2nd game in Milwaukee, starting at about 8:10 pm. Yusei Kikuchi, 3-5 3.48 ERA starts for Toronto; the Brewers are calling up rookie Carlos Rodriguez to make his first start in something of a desperation move after losing Wade Miley to a torn UCL this week. Rodriguez was the Brewers #19 prospect at Fangraphs. He's a junkballing righty: poor fastball but with good secondaries including a Bugs Bunny changeup. He had poor season totals in AAA, but had pitched much better there recently: 3-1 in his last 6 starts with a 2.83 ERA with 40 K and 9 BB in 35 innings. Maybe he's gotten command of the junk.
In about 35 minutes from now, it's Stroman vs. Singer at Kauffman Stadium.
