Not wanting the strugglng Daniel Lynch to start tonight's game, the Royals go to righty releiver Dan Altavilla as an opener. Altavilla has made 120 relief appearances over 7 MLB seasons for the Mariners, the Padres and the Royals. In his career, he's 8-7 with a 4.00 ERA. In 117 innings, he's allowed 93 hits, 59 runs, 52 earned, 16 HR, 60 BB and struck out 131. His career WHIP is a mediocre 1.308. His lone major league save was with the Mariners in 2020. He pitched well at AAA over 27 innings this year before the Royals called him up earlier this week. He pitched an 1-2-3 inning in Monday evening's game in relief of Seth Lugo and was impressive, striking out 2. It was the 2nd appearance for Altavilla against the Yanks; the first was 3 innings of mopup duty in which he gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 BB and struck out 4 in 10-1 rout of the Mariners by the Yanks. Altavilla has been a FB/slider reliever (he briefly used a sinker and a change earlier in his career, but hasn't used either on in at least 3 seasons). In the past, he threw both of them about half the time, the FB 96-7 and the slider 89-90-91. On Monday, he threw 10 fastballs and 2 sliders. Whether he'll stick to that mix tonight is anyone's guess. Only 4 current Yankees have faced Altavilla before. Verdugo and LeMahieu struck out against him in their one AB on Monday, Grisham is 0-1 and Judge is 0-1 with 1 BB and 1 K.

If Lynch is the multi-inning "follower"...he was a supplemental (34th) pick of the Royals in the first round in 2018. He pitched well in the minors in 2018 and 2019, was stuck in developmental camp like every other prospect in 2020, and pitched poorly in 11 starts in AAA in 2021. The Royals called him up anyway, and he pitched poorly in the majors as well: 4-6 with a 5.69 ERA in 15 starts. He pitched better in 2 AAA starts in 2022, but it was the same story when they called him up: 4-13 with a 5.27 ERA in 27 starts. Same thng last year, poorly in 9 AAA starts, and about the same in 9 MLB starts: 3-4 with a 4.64 ERA. He's pitch poorly agains in 3 starts this year 0-0 with a 5.63 ERA in 16 innings, 13 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, 3 HR, 6 BB and 12 K. His WHIP so far this year is 1.188. He got belted by the Mariners in his last start giving up 6 hits and 8 earned runs in 4 innings.
He's started against the Yanks twice before and was mediocre in both. He threw 100 pitches in 4 2/3 innings in a game against them in 2021, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 HR, 4 BB and struck out 6, but couldn't stay in long enough to qualify for the win. The Royals got 6 runs after he left to win 8-4. In 2022, he went 5 innings, giving up 4 hits 3 runs, 1 HR, 1 BB and K'd 4, and left with the Royals up 4-3, but this time, it was their bullpen couldn't hold the lead and the Yanks rallied to win 6-4. His WHIP against the Yanks is 1.345, and their quadruple slash line against him is .216/.310/.432/.742.
Repertoire: Lynch throws both FB and sinker, and in past years, used the 4-seamer much more often, this year it's about six 4-seamers to one sinker. (In past years, the ratio was more like 20 to 1). Both average about 92 mph. He also throws a slider 85, a change 84, and a curve 79-80. The mix ratios so far this season: 4-seamer 44%, 2-seamer 8%, slider 20%, change 20% and curve 8%. He's always gotten subpar spin rate on his FB and curve, but much better extension than average. This year so far, even the extension is only slightly above avereage.

Playing the name game...Well over 100 Dans and Daniels in MLB history, the best was 19th century Hall of Famer Dan Brouthers. The numbers are sketchy because of the irregularity of competition, but he's 32nd all-time in bWAR, and led the NL in BAVG 4 times, in OBA 4 times, in slugging 6 times and in OPS 7 times. For two years, he was the NL active career HR leader, 1887-1888, before Harry Stovey passed him in 1889. He's such an Old-Timer that the Old-Timers' Committee put him in the Hall in 1944, 80 years ago. My father was just 17 years old when he was elected. There are 9 other MLB players with the last name Lynch. The two best were outfielder Jerry Lynch, who played 12 seasons in the 50's and 60's for the Pirates and Reds, and pitcher Ed Lynch, who played for the Cubs and Mets in the 80's. Jerry had the longer career and actually got a downballot MVP vote in 1961, but Ed had more career WAR, because Jerry, who was a good enough hitter to be used regularly as a pinch-hitter was also a bad enough fielder to negate much of his good hitting. Now listed officially as Daniel Lynch IV, as far as I can tell from searching Baseball Reference, he's the only "the 4th" in MLB history. As for Altavilla, same first name as Lynch, but no other Altavillas in MLB history.

Rotation fill-in Cody Poteet is making his 3rd start since being inserted into the rotation for the injured Clark Schmidt, and his 4th start this season. He's done very well in his first 3, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.72 so far. In 15 2/3 innings, he's alllowed 11 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, 2 HR, walked 4 and struck out 11. His WHIP in this limited number of innings is outstanding: 0.957. In his last start, he battled Dodgers' lineup and their ace Yamamoto to a draw for 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, 3 BB and striking out 1. He's never pitched against the Royals before.

Last night, the Yanks got to Royals' starter Singer early and often, knocking him out in the 6th having allowed 7 hits and 6 earned runs. The key blow was Austin Wells' 3-run HR in the 4th, breaking the game open. Marcus Stroman danced into and out of trouble multiple times as usual, but held the Royals scoreless for 5 2/3 to earn his 4th win in a row. The Yanks moved to a season high 27 over .500 at 48-21, and have won 11 of 13 and 27 of 35.
Also last night, the O's got a 3-run HR by ex-Yankee Jorge Mateo in the 2nd, and Albert Suarez and 4 relievers combined for a 5-hit shutout as the O's blanked the Braves 4-0 in the first game of their series at Camden Yards. The O's have now won 5 in a row and 15 of 19. The Rays got 4 in the 9th off of Cubs' current closer Hector Neris, including a walkoff 3-run HR from Brandon Lowe to win 5-2 in Tampa, breaking their 4-game losing streak. A crucial 2-run error by first baseman Dominic Smith broke a 1-1 tie in the 4th, and Phillies ace Zack Wheeler earned his 8th win by shutting down the Red Sox over 7 innings of 3-hit, 1-run ball, and the Philles took the first game in Fenway, 4-1. The Jays got RBI hits from Springer, Horwith and Jansen in the 2nd, 4th and 9th, and Yusei Kikuchi and 4 relievers pitched a combing 5-hitter as Toronto shut out the Brewers in Milwaukee, 3-0.
As of this morning, the Yanks still lead the O's by 2 1/2 games. The Red Sox and Jays are tied for 3rd-4th, 14 games back and the Rays are still in 5th, 15 games out of 1st.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Brewers got 5 in the 5th, including a 2 run HR by Willy Adames, then held off a furious Jays rally in the 9th to win 5-4. Tobias Myers pitch 6 strong innings for his 2nd win in a row since rejoining the rotation and closer Megill got Vlad Guerrero, Jr to fly out to center with the tying run on 3rd to end it. The Jays' loss drops them out of the 3rd place tie with the Red Sox and into 4th by themselves, 14 1/2 games back of the Yanks. Two excellent rookie prospects who have struggled to start their careers square off in Baltimore at 6.35 pm. Spencer Schwellenbach, hit hard in both of his starts, is 0-2 with an 8.38 ERA, goes for Atlanta. The O's send out their prospect Cade Povich; he got belted in his 1st start giving up 6 in 5 1/3. He's 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA. That game is underway and is 0-0 top 2nd. The Cubs and Rays play their 2nd game at 6:50 pm in the Tampa CraptasticDome™. Javier Assad, 4-2 with a 2.74 ERA pitches for the Cubs; the stuggling Aaron Civale, 2-5 with a 5.51 ERA goes for the Rays. That game is also underway and is also 0-0, top 1st. Finally, the Phillies vs. Red Sox play their 2nd game at Fenway at 7:10 pm. Cristopher Sanchez, 3-3 with a 2.71 ERA will take on Nick Pivetta, who's 3-4 with a 3.40 ERA.
In about an hour from now, it's Poteet vs. Altavilla/Lynch IV(?) at Kauffman Stadium, as the Yanks look to make it 3 in a row over the Royals.
And that's it for the pre-game rigamarole. I'm going to make dinner and relax before the game. See you guys in about 75 minutes.

Lynch's name certainly lends itself to puns better than Altavilla's, although many of them would have unpleasant connotations. I'll hang around enough to see him, but probably won't contribute.
There is a wine district near Palermo, Sicily called Altavilla. That's all I've got.

Dominquez would be riding the bench with OF roster full. He'll get more play time in SWB being able and ready should his need arises.
