The Royals send righty Alec Marsh out to try to avoid getting swept. The Royals picked Marsh in the 2nd round in 2019. He didn't pitch particularly well in rookie ball in 2019. In 2020, like all other prospects, he was in developmental camp. He didn't pitch well in AA in 2021. He was horrifically bad in a repeat of AA in 2022, going 1-13 with an ERA 7.32 and a WHIP of 1.671. In spite of that, they let him pitch in two AAA playoff games and he did well in both. Last year, he again pitched badly in AA for 11 starts, but a bit better. They again elevated him to AAA for 3 starts, and again he pitched very well, so they called him to the majors. He was terrible there in his first 5 starts, 0-3 with an ERA over 7.00. He bounced in and out of the rotation for the rest of the season, pitching decently in the pen, but awful in the rotation (3-2 with a 3.94 ERA in the pen, 0-7 in 8 starts with a 7.64 ERA in the rotation).
This year, he had one good 4-inning start in AAA, and they called him up again. Finally he's a credible starter in the majors, going 5-3 in 11 starts with a 4.03 ERA. In 60 innings, he's allowed 53 hits, 28 runs, 27 earned, 8 HR, 17 BB and struck out 54. His WHIP is a solid 1.167. He's been hit pretty hard his last 3 starts, 1-2 with a 7.41 ERA in 17 innings. 19 hits, 14 runs, all earned, 5 HR, 5 BB and 18 K's. If the Yanks kick him around today, the Royals will have to wonder if the bad old days are back.
He's pitched against the Yanks twice before, one bad start and one bad relief appearance last season. He took the loss in a start against the Yanks in July at the Stadium, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 HR, with 2 BB and 3 K's. In a relief appearance against them in KC in September, he followed an opener, and gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits, and 3 BB while striking out 6, taking the loss in a 5-2 Yankee win. His WHIP against the Yanks is 1.655, his ERA is 7.45, and the Yankee team quadruple slash line against him is .2900/.400/.579/.979.
Repertoire: Marsh is a 6 pitch righty: two fastballs, two sliders, a curve and a change. The 4-seamer averages 94, the two seamer about 1/2 mph less. He throws about 6-7 sliders for every sweeper, and the sweeper has much more horizontal break and little bit more drop. The slider is 86-7, the sweeper is about 85. He also has a change 86-7 and a curve at about 83. His FB spin is elite, the curve spin a bit above average, but he gets very poor extension which makes the FB play down. His barrel rate is in the bottom 20% (more barrels against, not less) among MLB pitchers. The pitch mix so far this season: 4-seamer 38%, the sinker 13%, the slider 18%, the sweeper 3%, the curve 16% and the change 12%.

Playing the name game...The have been 9 Alecs or Alecks in MLB history, the only Aleck, Smith, played mostly catcher for 10 seasons at the turn of the 19/20th century. Alec Wilson played just one season, 1939. The rest are contemporary players, the best of which is Alec Bohm, the Phillies 3rd baseman finally living up to his prospect potential this season. The have been quite a few Marshall in the majors, but only 3 other Marshes, the best of whom is former Angel and current Phillie outfielder Brandon Marsh, who was 8th in the NL in triples last year.

Nestor Cortes will try to pitch a genuinely good game on the road for the 1st time this year; so far, he's 0-3 with a 6.17 ERA away from the Bronx. On the season, he's 3-5 in 14 starts with an ERA of 3.68. In 80 2/3 innings, he's allowed 74 hits, 34 runs, 33 earned, 12 HR, 16 BB with 78 K. His WHIP is a strong 1.116. In 6 road starts, he's yet to throw a "quality start". In his last game, the Dodgers knocked him around a bit, 5 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 HR, 1 BB and 4 K's in the 11-3 rout last Saturday night. It was his first bad start at home this year.
Cortes has made 3 starts and 2 relief appearances against the Royals. He's 2-1 with a 2.82 ERA against him. In 22 1/3 innings, he's given up 25 hits, 9 runs, 7 earned, 2 HR, 6 BB with 22 K. His WHIP vs. KC is a weak 1.388, and their team quadruple slash line against him is .281/.323/.416./739. He last pitched against them in 2022, winning his first game of the season in late April, giving up 8 hits but just 1 earned run in 5 innings in a 12-2 rout, and wining his 9th game of the season against them at the Stadium in late July, giving up 2 runs in 5 innings in an 8-2 blowout.

Last night, the Yanks blew the game open with 6 runs in the first, the big blow a 3-run HR by Trevino to cap the rally, and even though the Royals came back some late in the game, the Yanks still won by the same 6 they started with, 11-5. Cody Poteet gave up 2 runs in 5 1/3 to get to 3-0 on the season.
Also yesterday, the Brewers got 5 in the 5th and held off a Brewers rally in the 9th when closer Megill got Vlad, Jr. to fly out with the tying run on 3rd in the 9th. Tobias Myers gave up 1 run in 6 innings to get the W in a 5-4 Brewers win. The Braves rallied in the 8th on a 2-run HR by Matt Olsen that tied the game at 2, but the O's struck right back in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run shot of their own by Colton Cowser to beat Atlanta again, 4-2. The O's have now won 6 in a row and 16 of their last 20. The Cubs got a 3-run HR in the 7th from Cody Bellinger to take a 4-2 lead but the Rays nearly gave Hector Neris his 2nd blown save in a row, as he gave up a solo HR to Jose Caballero, and left the tying and winning runs on base. He got Yandy Diaz to ground out to 3rd, but Brandon Lowe just missed his 2nd straight walkoff 3-run HR by flying out to medium deep left center to end it, 4-3 Cubs. The Phillies took an eary 4-0 lead in Fenway, but the Red Sox rallied for 8 runs in the middle innings, then held on to win 8-6. The Sox got 6 hits and a sac fly in the 5-run 5th, and David Dahl was the tying run at the plate in the 9th when Sox closer Kenley Jansen got him to fly out to medium deep right to wrap it up.
As of this morning, the Yanks still lead the O's by 2 1/2 games. The Sox re in 3rd, 14 games back. The Jays in 4th and the Rays in 5th each dropped another game in the standings, putting them 15 and 16 games back, respectively.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Braves and O's wrap up their series in Camden Yards at 1:05 pm. Reynaldo Lopez, 3-2 with a 1.85 ERA, tries to avert a sweep for the Atlanta; Cole Irvin, 6-2 with a 2.87 ERA, tries to nail the sweep down for Baltimore. The Cubs and Rays play the rubber game of their series in the PuzzleDome™ in Tampa at 6:50 pm. Justin Steele, yet to win a game in 8 starts this year after 16 wins last season, goes for the Cubs. He's 0-3 with a 3.65 ERA. Taj Bradley will try to improve on his 1-4 5.17 ERA season for the Rays. The Phils and Red Sox play the rubber game of their series in Fenway at 7:10 pm. Alternate ace Aaron Nola, 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA goes for the Phillies, Tanner Houck, 6-5 despite leading the AL in ERA at 1.91 goes for Boston. The Blue Jays, having just dropped 2 of 3 to the Brewers in Milwaukee, have the day off today, before heading back to the Rogers Centre to take on the Guardians over the weekend.
And at 2:10 this afternoon, it's Cortes vs. Marsh at Kauffman Stadium, as the Yanks try to complete the 4-game sweep of the Royals.

Time for the sweep! Stupid afternoon game, I'll miss this one too. How’s the plantar fasciitis Chi? Any better? It's getting a lot better but I still can't run. I tried one mile on Monday morning and the paid came back to my foot. It's so frustrating but I need to be patient with it.

Nestor's road stats are quite the enigma. Yankee Stadium plays as a neutral park and if anything would favor hitters to pitchers (especially LHB v. RHP). Is he not getting enough sleep? Are the hotel beds not as comfortable as his bed at home? Does he feel like he's to husky on the mound in road grays and misses the slimming pinstripes? I get that some pitchers feed on the emotion of the crowd, but this stark difference is tough to explain.
Now, in all seriousness... Nestor has been good at home but I'd hardly call him nasty. He's now well into his second year of mediocrity. At what point does management (and the fans) concede that he's simply a pony with a lot of tricks, but once you see the tricks, his stuff is marginal.
