The Red Sox come into this first series of the season vs. the Yanks well behind the top two teams in the AL East race, but just 2 games behind the Twins for the 3rd Wild Card. With over 90 games left in the season, they're very much alive for the playoffs. The game is a bit earlier than usual, because TD Garden will be hosting a viewing party near Fenway Park so Celtics fans can watch their team try to close out its first NBA title in 16 years, and both teams are trying to avoid tying up the enitre area with two large crowds. The Sox were 5 games over .500 earlier this year, but have basically bounce back a forth a game or two over or under .500 for the last 35 games or so. They sit 3rd in the Easy, 13 games behind the Yanks and 10 1/2 behind the Orioles.

Boston will send Brayan Bello to the mound to open the 3-game set at 6:30 pm in Fenway Park. Bello is a was signed by the Red Sox as a Latino free agent at age 17. He worked his way up the Boston farm system carefully, except for 2020 when, like all prospects, he was in developmental camp for the season. He pitched well in A but not in AA in 2021. In 2022, he mastered AA, but also made 10 excellent starts in AAA. The Sox called him up in early July, and he was in their rotation the rest of the season. With the exception of allowing just 1 HR in 57 innings, Bello pitched poorly in the majors, 2-8 with a 47.1 ERA and a sky-high WHIP of 1.779. The Sox had him open the 2023 season in AAA, but after one very good start, they called him back to the majors for good.
He got hit hard in his first start back with the Sox, but after a mediore 2nd start, he ran off 12 good-to-excellent starts in a row. At the All-Star Break, Bello was 6-5 with a 3.04 ERA. He struggled from that point to the end of the season, going 6-6 with a 5.71 ERA. He'd allowed just 8 HR in 80 innings before the break, but got slammed for 16 more in 77 innings after. He again got off to a good start this season. After 6 starts, he was 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA, but he's stuggled again in his last 5 starts, going 2-2 with an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP of 1.688. He's allowe 3-5 runs in each of the 5 starts, and lasting 5 innings or less in 3 of them. On the season, he's 6-3 with a 4.74 ERA. In 11 starts (he missed a couple of starts for an IL stay with "right lat tightness" in late April and early May), he's pitched 58 1/3 innings, allowed 58 hits, 33 runs, 31 earned, 9 HR and 21 BB with 51 K's. His WHIP on the season is a mediocre 1.354.
There is one team Bello has been repeatedly outstanding against, and it's the Yankees. He has more starts against them than any other team, and his ERA against the Yanks is the best against any team he's started more than once against. He's 2-2 in 5 starts against New York, with an ERA of 1.45. In 31 innings, he's given up 25 hits, 9 runs, 5 earned, no HR, and 9 BB with 25 K's. His WHIP against the Yanks is 1.097, and their quadruple team slash line against him is .212/.268/.271/.539. He made three starts vs. the Yanks last year, and Sox won all three. In mid-June he held them to 3 hits and 2 runs in a 7-inning no-decision. In his next start, the return match at Fenway the following week, he held them to 4 hits, but only 1 run while striking out 8 to earn the W. In mid-August back in the Brons, he allowed just 1 run in 6 innings to get another win.
Repertoire: A 5-pitch righty in 2022 and 2023, he swapped out his curve for a cutter last year. This year, he's dropped both his 4-seamer and the cutter he tried last year. He's now a 3-pitch pitcher, at least so far this season. Sinker at 95-6, thrown about 40% of the time, change at 87, about 31% of the time, and slider also at 87, about 29% of the time. He gets more horizontal break on all three pitches then average, especially the sinker, more drop on the sinker and slider. His barrel and hard hit rates are well below average, and while his sinker velo is way above average, the spin is way below average.

Playing the name game...Tons of Brians in MLB history (81 of them), but Bello is a Brayan, and there have been only 3 of those. Of those 3, Bryan Rocchio, the Guardians shortstop is the best of them, but not by much. A great defensive shortstop, he's struggling with the bat this year. Brayan Pena was a backup catcher for 11 seasons with a career bWAR of 0.2. So Bello is the best Brayan in MLB history so far, with a career bWAR of 3.5. He's also the only Bello to appear in the majors, and suprisingly, there are no "Bellow"s or "Bellows"s either.

Luis Gil has been brilliant in rookie season so far, but a white-hot run of 7 starts came to an end against the Dodgers last Sunday. He got through 4 innings unscathed, but Mookie Betts got him for a 2 run double in the 5th, and Teoscar Hernadez got him on a poor pitch call, a 2-1 change in the zone down and in, belted for a solo HR (Teoscar has great numbers against the change this season) that knocked Gil out with 3 ER in 5 2/3 innings. On the season, he's still 8-1 for the season with a 2.04 ERA in 13 starts. In 75 innings, he's allowed just 35 hits, 18 runs, 17 earned, 3 HR and struck out 90. The solo poor stat in his stat line is the walks, at 35 and 4.2, he's still tied for 2nd in the AL in total walks allowed, and has the highest BB/9 rate among 36 qualified starters. Everywhere else, the numbers are elite: 7th in bWAR for pitchers, 2nd in ERA, tied for 3rd in wins. Lowest hits per 9 innings, 5th in K's, K's per 9 innings and fewest HR per 9 innings.
This is Gil's 2nd career start against Boston. He face them in his 3rd of 6 starts in 2021, going 4 2/3, allowing 3 hits, 0 runs, and 4 BB while striking out 4. He left with a 2-0 lead because he allowed two singles in the 5th, and walked the bases loaded. Wandy Peralta got out of that jam, and the Yanks went on to win 2-0. It's just one game and 21 batters, but he's 0-0 with an ERA of 0.00 vs. the Red Sox, but the WHIP is 1.500, and the Red Sox quadruple slash line against him is .177/.333/.177/.510.

Yesterday, the Yanks bats were in a deep sleep for 6 innings, not getting even a hit off Royals' starter Alec Marsh until the 7th, and the Royals carried a 2-0 lead to the late innings. But the Yanks rallied for 3 in the 8th, the go-ahead blow being Soto's RBI single of hard throwing lefty Anthony Zerpa, and the Yanks were in position to complete a 4-game sweep. Not to be, for in the 9th and two outs and a man on 1st (after Rizzo and Clay Holmes didn't coordinate properly on a tapper to the right side), and a 0-2 count on light-hitting CF Isbel, Holmes allowed him to work the count full then single to center to put runners at the corners, and after getting ahead 2-1 on the count, 3B Garcia got a sinker down and in, and pulled it down the 3rd base line for the game-winning 2 run double. The disappointing loss ended the Yanks 4 game winning streak, dropped them back to 27 games over .500 at 49-22, and cost them a chance to gain ground on the hot-on-their-heels Orioles, who finally lost a game themselve.
Also yesterday...In Baltimore, the Braves got 6 scoreless innings from Reynaldo Lopez, giving up just 2 hits and a BB while striking out 8 in their 6-3 win, avoiding getting swept in Camden Yards. The got 4 runs early, withstood the usual O's rally attept, and tacked on 2 insurance runs in the 9th. The Rays rallied for 3 in the 7th on 3 hits, a BB, a SB and a RBI groundout off of set-up man Mark Leiter, Jr, and held on to win the game, 3-2 and the series, 2-1. Taj Bradler gave up just 2 unearned runs on 3 hits and struck out 11, and got a W for his effort because of the Rays' rally. The Red Sox put to gets a 4-run 2nd on 4 doubles and a single against Phillies alternate ace Aaron Nola, then knocked him out in the 4th with 4 more including a 3-run HR from Tyler O'Neill, and coasted to a 9-3 win, winning the series against the best team in the NL. O'Neill has been nagged by inury the last two weeks, but in his last five games he's 7 for 16 and the Sox are 4-1 when he's been able to play. The Jays had yesterday off.
As of this morning, the Yanks still lead the O's by 2 1/2 games. The Sox are in 3rd, 13 games back. The Jays are still in 4th and the Rays in 5th, 14 1/2 and 15 games back, respectively.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Phillies move on from Fenway and head down to Camden Yards for a 7:05 pm start in a battle of heavyweights as significant as Yankees vs. Dodgers last weeked. (And Yankees-Red Sox is STILL the Freakin' Fox Lame of the Week, AND the SundayNightESPNObnoxiousDespiteConeyCast. One of them should've picked the Phils and O's; it's a great regional matchup between two outstanding teams, but Bewertungen Uber Alles.) Ranger Suarez, having the best season in the NL so far this year, leading with both 10 wins and an ERA of 1.81, starts for the Phils. Kyle Bradish, having a good season in 7 starts since coming off the IL, will go for the Orioles. Bradish is 2-0 so far with an ERA of 2.62.
The Jays head home to take on the AL Central leading Guardians at the Rogers Centre at 7:07 pm. The better but still not good Logan Allen (as opposed to the bad Logan Allen who pitches in relief for Arizona) goes for Cleveland; he's 6-3 with a 5.57 ERA. Opposing will be Kevin Gausman, who, in the last 4 starts, pitched 3 great games against weak-hitting teams, but got hammered by the O's in between, throws for Toronto. Gausman is 5-4 on the season with a 4.00 ERA.
Finally, the Rays head a bit north to take on the Braves in Atlanta at 7:20 pm. Zack Little, 2-4 with a 3.63 ERA pitches for Tampa. He's going up against Chris Sale, who bounced back in his last start throwing a good one against the Nats after the A's, off all teams, gave him a beating the start before in Atlanta. Sale is 8-2 on the season with a 3.01 ERA.
And at 6:30 or so this evening, rain permitting, it's Gil vs. Bellow at Fenway.

The preview stuff is done on time, but I'm going to be late to the game thread, as I have a couple things to take care of. It looks like the game will be delayed by rain at the start, but that's not certain, there's rain all over the Boston area, with heavy t'storms to the west, the south and the southwest. To this amateur weather forcaster's eye, it's going to be delayed for a while.
EDIT: YES has a graphic up saying the game will be delayed by rain, no one knows how long.
I hope I can join you in time for the start of the game, but if not, I'll see you when I see you in the game thread.

My weather app only shows clouds at Fenway, so maybe this will come to an abrupt ending and we can play some bawl… I had no idea the name of the park had been changed to Jet Blue park at Fenway until I pulled the weather up. Maybe I can get some investor to call my house the “House of Inger from Bob’s Coffee House for a few hundred thou a year…
