June 16th
1882-Former Yankees Pitcher Robert “Bob” Keefe (1907) was born. (1882-1964)
On August 20,1905, Pitcher Robert Keefe was purchased by the Highlanders from the AA Tacoma Tigers (PCL). For the 1907 Yankees, Keefe had appeared in 19 games, while posting a 3-5 record with a 2.50 ERA. He would return to the Minor Leagues, pitching from 1908-1910 for the AA Montreal Royals (EL). He would return to the MLB with the 1911-1912 Reds, posting a 14-16 record in 56 games, finishing out his MLB Pitching career. In 1913, he would return to the Minor Leagues.
1903-The Highlanders would register their 1st shutout victory ever, a 1-0 game against the White Sox with veteran starter Clark Griffith as the winning pitcher for New York.
1908-Former Yankees Pitcher Ned Garvin (1904) had passed away. (1874-1908)
On September 9,1904, veteran MLB hurler Ned Garvin was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the NL Brooklyn Superbas (aka the Dodgers). In September of 1904, Ned had appeared in only 2 games for the 1904 Yankees with a 0-1 record. For the Brooklyn Superbas, he had been 5-15 with a 1.68 ERA in 23 games. Garvin had pitched in the MLB from 1896-1904, finishing with an MLB Pitching career record of a 58-97 with a 2.72 ERA and 3 saves in 181 games. After the AL 1904 season had ended, he would retire from the MLB. In 1908, Ned would pass away from consumption.
1920-Former Yankees Minor League C Eddie Malone was born. (1920-2006)
In 1938, the Cardinals had signed Catcher Eddie Malone as MLB Amateur Free Agent. In 1949, He would make his MLB Player debut with the White Sox against the Yankees. He would play for the 1950 White Sox. As an MLB player, he had appeared in 86 games with Chicago, while hitting .257 with 1 HR and 26 RBIs. On June 28,1950, Malone was purchased by the Yankees from the White Sox. He didn’t appear with the team at the MLB level. On July 5,1950, the Yankees would send C Eddie Malone to AA Oakland Oaks (PCL) to complete an earlier deal made on October 13,1949. On that day, the Yankees would send a Player to be Named Later and Cash to AA Oakland Oaks (PCL) for Minor League Players: OF Jackie Jensen and INF Billy Martin. On July 12,1951, he was repurchased by the Yankees from the AA Oakland Oaks (PCL). On July 12,1951, he was traded by the Yankees along with Minor League P Bob Landeck and Cash to the Dodgers for Reserve OF Art Schallock. From 1951-1954, Eddie would play in the PCL with the AAA Hollywood Stars. Later, he would appear in the Baseball TV Show “Home Run Derby” as the show’s catcher.
1923-Former Yankees Reserve OF Alfred “Allie” Clark (1947) was born.(1923-2012)
Before the start of the 1941 AL Season, the Yankees had signed OF Alfred “Allie” Clark, as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. Clark would miss most of 1943 and all of 1944-1945 AL seasons, while serving in the military. Allie Clark was a Reserve Outfielder, who had played for 7 seasons in the MLB. As a Rookie, he played on the 1947 Yankees, while appearing in 24 games, hitting .373 with 1 HR and 14 RBIs. On December 11,1947, Allie Clark was traded by the Yankees to the Indians for veteran P Red Embree. In his 2nd MLB season, he played for the 1948 Indians, hitting .310. He would appear in 2 World Series: 1947 Yankees and 1948 Indians. Also, Allie would play for the A’s and the White Sox. Following his MLB playing days, he was with the AAA Rochester Red Wings (IL) from 1953-1957; hitting .306 with 75 HRs and 340 RBIs over that time span.
1925-The Yankees had signed veteran NL 1B Fred Merkle (1925-1926), after his player release by the Cubs. Fred will hit .333 for the 1925-1926 Yankees with No HRs and 4 RBIs in 8 games, before becoming a Yankees full-time MLB Coach for the team during the 1926 AL season.
1933-Former Yankees Pitcher Ken Johnson (1969) was born. (1933-2015)
After being obtained from the Braves, veteran knuckleball hurler Ken Johnson went 1-2 with 3.46 ERA in 12 games for the 1969 Yankees before being sold to the Cubs. He had originally come up to the MLB with the 1958 Kansas City A’s. He would appear in the 1961 World Series with the Reds, pitching 1 scoreless inning against the Yankees during a 13-5 lost in Game 5 for the Reds.
1945-Red Sox Starter Dave Ferriss loses to the Yankees by the score of 3-2, after starting his MLB Pitching career with 8 victories, 4 of them shutouts.
1950-The Yankees had waived Reserve Catcher Gus Niarhos to the White Sox. For the 1946-1950 Yankees, he had appeared in 153 games, while hitting .257 with no HRs and 27 RBIs. Gus had played in 1 game of the 1949 World Series for the team against the Dodgers with no hits.
1953-At Yankee Stadium, St. Louis Browns Starter Duane Pillette had ended the Yankees' winning streak at 18 games and stopped the Browns' team record 14-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory. Johnny Mize became the 93rd player in MLB history to get 2,000 career hits, when he singled in the only Yankees' run in the 5th inning. Pillette was a former Yankees Pitcher, who was with the team in 1949-1950 before being traded to the Browns.
1962-A injured All-Star Slugger Mickey Mantle returns to the Yankees line-up after a 1-month layoff, he hits a dramatic 3-run pinch-hit HR in the top of the 8th inning. Although Mantle's HR blast gave the Yankees a 9-7 lead, but the Indians came back to score a run in the bottom of the 8th inning; they won the game in the 9th inning by the score of 10-9 on a 2-run HR by Tribe 2B Jerry Kendall
1975-Former Yankees Reserve Catcher Clint “Scrap Iron” Courtney (1951) had passed away from a fatal heart attack. (1927-1975)
In 1947, the Yankees had signed Catcher Clint Courtney as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. Clint would appear in only 1 game with the 1951 Yankees before being sold to the St. Louis Browns. Clint was one of many young Yankee catchers during the 1950’s, who were blocked by the presence of starting Catcher Yogi Berra. He was one of the 1st modern MLB catchers to wear glasses behind the catcher’s mask. Clint would play for the Yankees, Browns, Orioles, White Sox, Senators and the A’s during his 11-season MLB playing career (1951-1962) finishing with a .268 BA. Courtney was the Manager for AAA Richmond Braves (IL) for the Braves organization at the time of his fatal heart attack.
1977-At Yankee Stadium, Bronx Starter Ron Guidry hurls his 1st MLB complete game, a 7-0 shutout over the Royals. He allows only 3 Royals hits and strikes out 7 batters. Royal Starter Dennis Leonard takes the loss, giving up all 7 Yankees runs in the game, while dropping his 1977 AL season pitching record to a 4-7 mark. Guidry is now 5-2 for the 1977 AL season. At the plate, Mickey Rivers leads the Yankees hitting attack with a HR and double, while 2B Willie Randolph hits a triple. The game attendance for the game is 26,391 fans.
1977-Former Yankees Pitcher Kerry Wood (2010) was born.
On July 31, 2010, veteran MLB Reliever Kerry Wood was traded by the Indians along with cash to the Yankees for Players to be Named Later. On October 21, 2010, the Yankees would send 2 Minor League Pitchers Andrew Shive and Matt Cusick to the Indians to complete the trade. For the Yankees, Reliever Kerry Wood went 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 24 games. In 2010 AL postseason, he would appear in 7 games with no record. On November 1, 2010, the Yankees would grant Kerry Wood MLB Free Agency. He would sign with the Cubs for the 2011 NL season.
1994-Former Yankees Pitcher Marlin Stuart (1954) had passed away. (1918-1994)
On July 4,1954, Pitcher Marlin Stuart was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the Orioles. For the 1954 Yankees, he went 3-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 10 games. Marlin had previously pitched in the MLB for the Tigers, Browns, Yankees and the Orioles (twice) during his 6-season MLB Pitching career finishing with a 23-17 record with a 4.65 ERA, while appearing in 196 games.
1995-Current Yankees Reliever Ian Hamilton (2023-2024) was born.
On January 27, 2023, the Yankees had signed Ian Hamilton as a Minor League Free Agent. He has an MLB pitching career record of 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in 15 games with the 2018, 2020 White Sox and the 2022 Twins. Also, he had received a non-roster invite by the team to their 2023 MLB Spring Training Camp. He missed making the team, but he did push back his option out date to April 5th. On April 3rd, the Yankees would pick up his minor league contract from AAA Scranton. For the 2023 Yankees, Ian would post a 3-2 record with a 2.64 ERA with 2 save in 39 games.
1996-Legendary Hall of Fame Baseball Yankees Broadcaster Mel Allen (1939-1964) had died at the age of 83. (1913-1996)
Mel Allen was born “Melvin Avrom Israel” in 1913. Mel had a 60-year career in broadcasting that started in 1935, while in college at the Univ. of Alabama. He would graduate with 2 degrees: Political Science and Law. He would pass his Law Bar Exam. In 1936, CBS Radio had signed Mel Allen as a Sports Announcer. In 1939, Allen would start doing play-by-play for both the Yankees (1939-1964) and the Giants home games. First, he covered the team on radio, then moved over to TV booth for game coverage. Allen would cover 20 World Series and 24 All-Star games during his long broadcasting career. In the fall of 1964, the Yankees will fire Mel Allen. In 1965, he would join the Milwaukee Braves broadcasting team. In 1968, Allen was play-by-play man for the Indians. The Yankees would bring him back in 1967 for Old Timer’s Day game events and play by play of the annual Old Timer’s Day games. Allen would do this work for over 2 decades. Then Allen turned to doing voice over work. In 1978, Mel would join the Sports Channel Network doing 40 games a season from 1978 to 1985. In 1986, he became the Host for MSG Network’s “Yankees Magazine.” In 1977, Mel begins his narrator work for the long-running sports television show, “This Week in Baseball.” In 1978, Mel Allen would receive the 1st Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for Broadcasting Excellence, along with his former Yankees Broadcast Partner Red Barber. Many considered to 2 men to be the finest broadcast team in MLB History.
2001-Former Yankees Pitcher Wally Hood (1949) had passed away. (1924-2001)
On June 29,1948, Wally Hood was a pitcher for the USC baseball team, when he was signed as an MLB Amateur Free Agent by the Yankees. The 22-year-old right-hander was assigned to the AAA Newark Bears (IL). Wally would chalk up a 6-5 record with a 4.19 ERA, while pitching 86 innings in his 1st season in pro baseball. Hood, who would never pitch below AA ball during his 7-year run in the Minor Leagues. Wally was with the AAA Newark Bears (IL) and the AAA Kansas City Blues (AA) in 1949; his 2nd season in the Minors, he put together an 8-8 record with a 4.92 ERA, while pitching 161 innings. In late September of 1949, Wally would receive a call from the Bronx. The Californian would make his MLB pitching debut on September 23rd. In his 2 Yankees appearances, he had allowed no hits and runs along with no decisions; he never would appear in the MLB again. Wally Hood would spend 5 more seasons in baseball, all in the Minor Leagues. The right-hander would go from a 7-16 record with a 5.42 ERA with the AAA 1950 Kansas City Blues (AA) to a 11-9 record in a split 1951 season with the AAA San Francisco Seals and the Hollywood Stars in the PCL. The Yankees would send Hood to the Dodgers during the 1952 MLB season in a presently unknown transaction. Wally would report to the Dodgers farm team, the Fort Worth Cats, Wally had the best numbers of his pro baseball career, going 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA in the final months of the 1952 season. Wally would hold on through to 1954, when he went 4-5 with a 5.43 ERA for the AAA Montreal Royals (IL). He called it quits at the age of 28 with a 7-season Minor League career pitching record of 52-62 with a 4.61 ERA in 951 innings.
2019-An authentic Babe Ruth New York Yankees jersey from 1928-1930 seasons sets a record for a piece of Baseball Memorabilia as it sells for $5.64 million at auction.
2022-The Yankees would release veteran MLB OF Ender Inciarte from his Minor League contract, enabling him to become an MLB Free Agent. He had been playing for AAA Scranton. He had been signed by the team on December 11, 2021.
2022-The Yankees would bring up Relief Pitcher Ryan Weber from AAA Scranton as an emergency pitcher for today’s game against the Rays at Yankee Stadium. He would pitch 3 2/3 innings of relief work, while giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run in the game against the Rays, as the Yankees win by the score of 2-1. After the game, the team DFA’s him in an MLB roster move. They will have 10 days to move or release him. On November 30, 2021, Ryan Weber had been signed by the Yankees to a Minor League contract with an invitation to their 2022 Spring Training camp. He had a 7-year MLB pitching record of 4-12 with a 5.28 ERA in 64 games. He had pitched for the Braves, Mariners, Rays, Red Sox and the Brewers.

1903-Former Yankees Pitcher Benjamin “Big Ben” Shields (1924-1925) was born. (1903-1982)
For the 1924-1925 Yankees, Pitcher Ben Shields would post a 3-0 record with a 6.58 ERA in 6 games. On February 6,1926, Ben was placed on the “voluntarily retired list” due to health problems and needed time for recovery. He had been hit in the chest during BP by Babe Ruth, his chest infection problem turned out be TB. He wouldn’t pitch again in the MLB until 1930 AL season with the Red Sox.
1904-The Yankees had traded Rookie INF Bob Unglaub to the Boston Americans (aka Red Sox) for OF Pasty Dougherty, who would hit a combined .280 with 113 RBIs for the 1904 AL season.
1917-The Giants and Yankees would play the 1st Sunday game in New York City for a War Charity in front of 21,000 spectators at the Polo Grounds.
1918-The Yankees would play an 8-inning 5-5 tie with the Tigers, called because the team had to catch a train to Cleveland.
1925-The Yankees had sold veteran Shortstop Everett “Deacon” Scott to the Senators. The former starting Shortstop for the 1922-1925 Yankees was only hitting .212 at the time of his trade to the Nats. In May of 1925, Yankees Manager Miller Huggins had benched Scott ending his MLB Consecutive games streak at 1,307 games. He had been replaced as Starting Shortstop by Pee Wee Wanninger. The Senators would use him as a Reserve INF. Scott had hit .254 with 13 HRs and 174 RBIs for the 1922-1925 Yankees.
1936-Yankees Starter Red Ruffing set an AL record for Pitchers by recording up to 10 total bases. Ruffing had hit 2 HRs as part of a 4-hit day (2-singles), helping the Yankees to a 15-4 crushing of the Indians.
1941-Yankees CF Joe DiMaggio was credited with a hit in his 30th consecutive game when an easy grounder to shortstop bounced up and hit Luke Appling on the shoulder. The White Sox would defeat the Yankees by the score of 8-7.
1944-The Yankees had signed veteran NL OF Johnny Cooney as an MLB Free Agent. He had been released by the Dodgers. The 43-year-old Outfielder would appear in 10 games for the team, while getting 1 hit, hitting just .125 before he was released by the team on August 4,1944.
1944-The Yankees had traded OF Ed Levy to the AA Milwaukee Brewers (AA) for OF Hersh Martin. For the 1944 Yankees, Levy was hitting .242 with 4 HRs in 40 games. The former 1937-1940 Phillies OF Hersh Martin, was now playing for the AA Brewers, he was hitting .358 in 58 games. He would become the 1944 Yankees Regular LF, hitting .302 in 85 games. In 1945, he would hit .267 in 117 games. Overall, as a Yankees player, he had appeared in 202 games, while hitting .286 with 16 HRs and 100 RBIs.
1946-The Yankees had purchased OF Frank Colman from the Pirates. Colman would appear in just 5 games for the 1946 Yankees, while hitting .267 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs before being sent down to the AAA Newark Bears (IL). In 1947, he would play in 22 games for the team, while hitting .107 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs, before returning to AAA Newark again. He never would return to play in the MLB again.
1956-A Sunday afternoon game at Yankee Stadium draws a crowd of 41,765 fans as the Bronx Bombers beat the Indians by the score of 9-4. Yankees 1st inning HRs by Rookie OF Norm Siebern (1) and Catcher Yogi Berra (18th) as the Bombers chase veteran Tribe Starter Early Wynn in a 4-run Yankees 1st inning. Wynn takes the loss for the Tribe dropping his 1956 AL season record to 6-4. Yankees Starter Whitey Ford goes only 1 2/3 innings, while giving up 2 hits and 1 Tribe run. He is then followed by Reliever Tom Morgan, who goes 1 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 Indian runs. He is followed by hurler Rip Coleman, who finishes the game off by going 6 innings, while allowing only 2 Tribe hits with 1 run. Coleman picks-up the victory, improving his 1956 Yankees pitching record to 2-1. Veteran RF Hank Bauer hits a 3-run HR in 7th inning, his 14th HR of the 1956 AL season. The 1956 Yankees have a 37-20 record for the AL season.
1961-The Yankees had signed veteran 1B Earl Torgeson as an MLB Free Agent. He had been released by the White Sox. He will hit .111 in 22 games for the Yankees, who released him as a player on September 2,1961, then they will sign him as an MLB Coach for the rest of the 1961 AL season.
1961-Former Yankees Reserve OF (1984-1985) MLB Scout, and Minor League Manager Vic Mata was born.
In 1978, the Yankees had signed OF Vic Mata as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. He had appeared in 36 games for the 1984-1985 Yankees, while hitting .312 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs as a Reserve Outfielder. Mata would manage the DSL Yankees/Padres. Also, he has an MLB Scout for the Yankees. Vic had been the Yankees' Latin American Field Coordinator. He has signed for the Yankees organization the following players: Ivan Nova, Hector Noesi, Yhency Brazoban, Melky Cabrera, Maximo Nelson, Joaquín Arias, Jose Valdez, Jimmy Paredes, Eduardo Nunez and Rudy Guillen.
1977-At Fenway Park, the Yankees open a 3-game series with the Red Sox, Bronx Starter Jim “Catfish” Hunter is bombed by 4 1st inning HRs by Red Sox batters: Rick Burleson, Fred Lynn, Carlton Fisk and George Scott. The Red Sox win the game by a final score of 11-1.
1978-Yankees Starter Ron Guidry would strike out 18 California batters in a 4-hit, 4-0 shutout of the Angels, to set an AL record for a left-handed pitcher in a single game. Guidry, who struck out 15 Angel batters in the 1st 6 innings of the game. Ron would post his 11th consecutive victory of the 1978 AL season without a loss. The performance will help coin a new nickname for Guidry as the team's Announcer, Phil Rizzuto, began to refer to him as 'Louisiana Lightning', inspiring a new Yankees tradition as the fans began to clap rhythmically, each time there was 2 strikes on the batter.
1979-Former Yankees OF Duffy Lewis (1919-1920) had passed away. (1888-1979)
Veteran OF Duffy Lewis was traded by the Red Sox along with front-line Pitchers Ernie Shore and Dutch Leonard for Yankees hurlers Ray "Slim" Caldwell and Slim Love, Catcher Roxy Walters, OF Frank Gilhooley and $15,000 Cash. The Boston Post reports, "It will take a lot to convince Boston fans that they got the best of this one". for the 1919-1920 Yankees Duffy will hit .272 with 11 HRs and 148 RBIs in 248 games. On December 31,1920, Lewis is traded by the Yankees along with veteran hurler George Mogridge to the Senators for OF Braggo Roth.
1984-Former Longtime Yankees Bullpen Coach and MLB Scout and MLB Player Jim Hegan (1961-1973,1979-1980) had passed away. (1920-1984)
Jim Hegan was a Catcher with legendary defensive skills, who had played 17 years in the MLB, while appearing in 5 MLB All-Star Games, "When you can catch like Hegan, you don't have to hit." – Yankees HOF Catcher Bill Dickey. As testament to his defensive skills, he never once appeared at any position but catcher in his MLB playing career. He threw out an amazing 50% of base stealers, more than Hall of Fame Catchers Johnny Bench or Yogi Berra. Jim was the Indians starting catcher from 1946-1956. He would handle the classic 1950’s Indians pitching staff, including the 1954 staff that won 111 games. He would catch 3 no-hitters by Tribe starters Don Black, Bob Feller and Bob Lemon. On September 1,1960, Jim would join the Yankees as a player, but he didn’t play in any games. He would stay with the Yankees organization in October of 1960 as an MLB Bullpen Coach for new Yankees Manager Ralph Houk. From 1974-1978, he was an MLB Coach for Tigers Manager Ralph Houk. He was an MLB Scout for the Yankees for 2 years before retiring from baseball. Jim’s son Mike Hegan played for the Yankees during the 1960’s and early 1970’s. They were the 1st MLB Father-Son duo to appear in the World Series together in 1964.
1985-Former Yankees Minor League INF Mitch Hilligoss was born.
The Yankees had selected INF Mitch Hilligoss in the 6th round of the 2006 MLB Amateur Player Draft. Mitch had been a college baseball star with Purdue Univ. He never played for the Yankees at the MLB level. On January 26, 2010, Mitch was traded by the Yankees to the Rangers for Reserve OF Greg Olson. He never appears at the MLB level with the Rangers.
1987-Former Yankees Player (1967-1968), MLB Coach (1968-1979) and Manager (1980) Richard Howser died from Brain Cancer at the age of 51. (1937-1987)
As an MLB player, he came to the Yankees at the end of his MLB playing career dealing with bad back problems. He had come up with the Kansas City A’s, later he played for the Indians. On December 20,1966, Richard was traded by the Indians for Yankees Pitcher Gil Downs and Cash. Howser would hit .267 in 1967 for the Yankees, but then he slipped in 1968. Upon his retirement as an MLB active player in the fall of 1968, the Yankees would hire him to be an MLB Coach (1969-1978). In 1979, he would leave the Yankees to coach a college baseball team. In 1980, he would return to the Yankees as their MLB Manager, leading them to a 103-59 record in AL East before losing to the Royals in the ALCS. After leaving the Yankees, he would manage their AL Western Division rivals, the Kansas City Royals. The popular Howser, who led the Royals to the 1985 World Championship, fell ill to brain cancer during the 1986 AL season. He would attempt to return to managing in Royals MLB spring training camp in 1987, only to give up his comeback attempt because of his weakened health condition. His Royals Uniform No. “10” was retired by the club.
1992-The Yankees had signed Pitcher Curt Young as an MLB Free Agent. He had been released by the Royals on June 10th, after posting a 1-2 record with a 5.18 ERA in 10 games. The team would send him to their AAA Club, the Columbus Clippers (IL), where he will win 3 games. Then Curt was promoted by the Yankees. For the 1992 Yankees, he would post a 3-0 record with a 3.32 ERA in 13 games, before becoming an MLB Free Agent again in the fall; when he would re-sign with his old original team, the Oakland A’s for the 1993 AL season.
2015-Yankees Starter Michael Pineda makes a bid for a no-hitter until Marlins batter Christian Yelich leads off the 7th inning with a HR; Pineda leaves after 2 more outs, getting credit for a 2-1 Yankees win, although, even if he had not given up a hit; he would likely not have had the chance to pitch any deeper into the game due of pitch count concerns. Miami almost ties the game in the 8th inning, but Adeiny Hechevarria's run on a fielder's choice by Dee Gordon is overturned after Yankees Manager Joe Girardi successfully challenges the call. Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez has a pair of hits for the team, bringing him within 3 of the 3,000 MLB hit club.
2018-Former Yankees MLB Pitching Coach, MLB Player and Baseball Executive Bill Connors had passed away. (1941-2018)
Bill Connors had started 1 game in his MLB Pitching career. It was on September 2,1967, as a member of the Mets against the Cubs. He went 4 innings, gave up 4 hits, 4 earned runs, walked 2 and struck out 3 Cub batters. He did not get a decision. Bill Connors was the 3rd baseman and #5 batter on the National team of Schenectady, NY that won the 1954 Little League World Series; one of his teammates was Jim Barbieri. Connors later had a long MLB Coaching career, starting as a member of the 1980-1981 Royals staff. Then he was a Cubs MLB Pitching Coach from 1982 to 1986. Then for the 1987-1988 seasons, he was a part of the Mariners MLB Coaching staff. In 1989 and 1990, he was back with the Yankees, before returning to the Cubs for the 1991-1993 NL seasons. On July 1, 2021, the Yankees would receive Minor League OF Aldenis Sanchez as the Player to be Named Later to complete the trade. Mike Ford had played in 101 games for the Yankees, while hitting .199 with 17 HRs and 41 RBIs.

1918-The Yankees would score in every inning except for the 8th inning as they beat the Indians by a score of 19-3.
1946-The Yankees had waived veteran Pitcher Bill Zuber to the Red Sox. As a spot starter for the 1943-1946 Yankees, Bill had posted a 18-23 record with a 3.88 ERA in 64 games. He would post a 5-1 record for the 1946 Red Sox. The Yankees had obtained Zuber from the Senators in trade that was made on January 29, 1943.
1975-Former Yankees Reliever Felix Heredia (2003-2004) was born.
On August 25, 2003, Reliever Felix Heredia was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the Reds. Felix went 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA in 59 games as a Yankees Reliever, before being traded to the Mets for veteran MLB Reliever Mike Stanton in 2004
1976-MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn has voided the sales of Oakland A’s Stars Pitchers Vida Blue (Yankees), Rollie Fingers and OF Joe Rudi (Red Sox). Kuhn has ordered the 3 players to return to Oakland, but A’s Team Owner Charlie Finley will not allow the A’s Manager Chuck Tanner to use any of them in a game until June 27th. Kuhn cited “that the trades were not in the best interest for baseball,” as he completely ignores the A’s long team history of selling off star players to keep the franchise running dating back to the days’ of Team Owner/Manager Connie Mack in Philadelphia.
1977-Yankees OF Reggie Jackson and Manager Billy Martin became involved in a dugout confrontation that is seen on national television during a NBC-TV “Game of the Week” broadcast being played at Boston’s Fenway Park. After Martin had remove Jackson for loafing on a ball hit to the outfield, replacing him with Reserve OF Paul Blair. Jackson questioned Manager Billy Martin actions in the Yankees dugout. The dugout discussion became more heated, with the 2 men in each other’s face, they were eventually separated by Yankees MLB Coaches Elston Howard and Yogi Berra. Yankees Team Owner George Steinbrenner was in Tampa watching the game on TV, he tells Yankees GM Gabe Paul to fire Martin. Instead, Paul talked George out of it, then Gabe Paul told George that he was quitting the team and left for Cleveland. George eventually talked Gabe Paul into coming back to the team, but his stay would be short as Gabe Paul would resign after the 1977 World Series victory over the Dodgers. Al Rosen would replace Gabe as Yankees President/General Manager for the 1978 AL season. As for Martin and Reggie situation, in August George would instruct Billy to play Reggie and bat 4th in the Yankees starting line-up, Reggie responded with his bat and the Yankees won the AL Flag and 1977 World Series victory over the Dodgers.
1981-Former Yankees Reserve Catcher Honey Barnes (1926) had passed away. (1900-1981)
In 1924-1925, John Francis "Honey" Barnes went to Colgate University, a college which traditionally has had strong sports programs. Honey Barnes was a Reserve Catcher on the 1926 Yankees, who had appeared in 1 game and had walked as a Yankees batter. He would continue to play in the Minor Leagues from 1927-1932.
Most of his minor league playing career came with the AA Buffalo Bisons (IL). After pro baseball, he was an investigator for the Niagara County Welfare Dept.
1993-The Yankees had signed Pitcher Paul Gibson as an MLB Free Agent. Gibson had been released by the Mets. He was signed to a Minor League contract by the team, who then assigned him to AAA Columbus Clippers (IL). He would be called up by the team in 1993, posting a 2-0 record with a 3.06 ERA in 20 games.
2007-The Yankees had signed Chinese Catcher Zhenwang Zhang and Pitcher Kai Liu. It is touted as the 1st time an MLB organization has signed Chinese players. This is not the case, as the Mariners had signed Chao Wang in 2001. Neither player will appear with the Yankees at the MLB level.
2009-In a start delayed by rain for over 5 hours at New Yankee Stadium, Washington Rookie Starter Craig Stammen earns his 1st MLB career victory when the Nationals shut out the Yankees by the score of 3-0. It is the 1st HR-less game at the ballpark, since opening day in April.
2010-The Mets would extend their current winning streak to 8 games, when Rookie Starter Hisanori Takahashi, along with bullpen help from Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez, shuts out their cross-town rivals the Yankees by the score of 4-0.
2011-A violent collision at home plate between Cubs’ base-runner Carlos Pena and Yankees Catcher Russell Martin is the highlight of the Yankees' 4-3 win. With the Bombers up by the score of 3-2 in the 6th inning, Geovany Soto hits a bases-loaded line drive to left which OF Brett Gardner catches as he is charging; he fires a 1-hop strike to Martin, which arrives just before Pena crashes into him, sending his helmet flying and the catcher rolling on the ground. But Martin holds on the ball for an inning-ending double play. Yankees Starter A.J. Burnett is the winner over Cubs Starter Ryan Dempster, with Bronx Closer Mariano Rivera picking up the save.
2012-The Yankees would beat the Braves by the score of 6-2; behind the pitching of their Ace Starter CC Sabathia for their 10th straight win. Yankee hitters Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano would hit HRs for the Bronx Bombers. All of the Yankees 10 wins have come in MLB Inter-League play.
2023-For the 1st time in 17 years, the Red Sox would sweep a doubleheader against their bitter rivals, the Yankees, by defeating them, 6-2, in the afternoon game and 4-1 in the nationally televised Sunday Night Baseball game at Fenway Park.

1903-Future Yankees Hall Of Fame 1B Lou Gehrig (1923-1939) was born in New York City. (1903-1941)
In 1923, Lou Gehrig will make his MLB Player debut with the Yankees. He was signed by the team, right out of Columbia Univ., where he was a Star Pitcher and 1B. During the 1925 AL season, he will become the Yankees' everyday 1B replacing veteran 1B Wally Pipp. He will set a record for the longest MLB consecutive games played streak, while combining with Babe Ruth to form one of the greatest run-producing tandems of all time. He would finish his Yankees playing career with a .340 lifetime BA along with 493 HRs with 1,991 RBIs in 2,164 games for the Yankees. Lou won the AL MVP Award 3 times during in his MLB playing career. In 1934, Lou won the AL Triple Crown with a .363 BA, 49 HRs with 165 RBI’s. In 1939, he was elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame. In May of 1939, Lou would stop playing baseball for the Yankees because of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS); he would pass away from the disease in 1941. On June 17,1939, the Yankees had announced that Lou Gehrig had officially retired from MLB, because of his ALS disease. On July 4,1939 at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees would retire his Yankees Uniform No. 4. They would honor him with a special day. He would spend the rest of the 1939 AL season in uniform being the Yankees Team Captain until the end of the 1939 World Series against the Reds.
1912-Former Yankees MLB Scout (1971-1974), MLB Player, Coach and Manager Don Gutteridge was born. (1912-2008)
Don Gutteridge was an MLB player, who later became a Minor League Manager for the White Sox Organization. In 1968, he was an MLB Scout for the Royals, helping the team prepare for the Player Expansion Team Draft. In July of 1968, he would rejoin the White Sox working on Manager Al Lopez’s MLB Coaching staff. In May of 1969, he would take over the White Sox Manager’s job, running the team until September of 1970, while posting a 109-172 record. In 1971, Don would join the Yankees organization as an MLB Scout, holding that position until 1974. He would finish up his MLB Scouting career with the Dodgers, working for their organization from 1975-1992.
1913-Former Yankees Pitcher Eddie Quick (1903) had passed away. (1881-1913)
Rookie hurler Eddie Quick had appeared in only 1 game for the 1903 Yankees, while pitching only 1 inning with no decision. In 1903, Eddie was traded along with Rookie Catcher Jack Zalusky to the AA Toledo (AA) for Rookie Catcher Red Kienow.
1918-The Yankees had purchased veteran OF Ham Hyatt from the Braves for Cash. Ham would hit .229 with 2 HRs and 10 RBIs in 53 games before the team released him.
1929-The Yankees had sold veteran 1B George “Tioga” Burns (1928-1929) to the Philadelphia A’s. George had played briefly with the 1928-1929 Yankees, while appearing in only 13 games as a Reserve 1B for Lou Gehrig, hitting just .154 before finishing his long MLB playing career with the 1929 Philadelphia A’s. On September 13,1928, the Yankees had acquired him from the Indians. He was a lifetime .300 hitter, who was now 35 years old. The team would use him as a Reserve 1B for Lou Gehrig. While playing with the Tribe, George had won the 1926 AL MVP Award; for hitting .358 with 4 HRs and 115 RBIs in 151 games. In 1914 with the Tigers, he beat out fellow Rookie teammate Wally Pipp for the Tigers 1B job. Then the Tigers would trade Rookie 1B Wally Pipp to the Yankees in February of 1915. The Yankees had acquired George Burns in a trade with the Tigers in March of 1918; but then they would turn around and would trade him to the Philadelphia A’s for veteran OF Bing Bodie.
1941-Yankees CF Joe DiMaggio hit in his 32nd consecutive game, en route to his record breaking MLB 56 consecutive games hitting-streak by going 3-for-3, including a HR against the White Sox.
1949-Former Yankees Reserve OF Gene Locklear (1976-1977) was born.
On July 10,1976, the Yankees had obtained OF Gene Locklear, when he was traded by the Padres to the Yankees for a Player to be Named Later. On July 31,1976, the Yankees would send P Rick Sawyer to the Padres to complete the trade. Gene had only appeared in 14 games for the Yankees, while hitting .270 with No HRs and 3 RBIs; spending most of his time playing with AAA Syracuse Chiefs (IL). In 1978, he would leave the Yankees organization to play pro baseball to play in Japan. He will hit .240 with 8 HRs and 38 RBIs in 108 games for the Nippon Hamfighters (JPPL) before retiring from the game.
1950-Former Yankees Reserve INF Fernando Gonzalez (1974) was born.
On May 5,1974, Reserve INF Fernando Gonzalez was purchased by the Yankees from the Royals. He had previously played Manager Bill Virdon, when he was managing the Pirates in 1973. The Bucs had traded him to Royals in a trade for Pitcher Nelson Briles. Gonzalez will appear in 61 games for the team, while hitting .215 with 1 HR and 7 RBIs for the Yankees. On March 5,1975, he was released by the Yankees to a team in the Mexican League.
1951-At Yankee Stadium, Yankees Rookie OF Mickey Mantle hits HRs in both games of a Tuesday doubleheader played against the White Sox for the 1st time in his MLB playing career. The Yankees would take the Opener by the score of 11-9. Catcher Yogi Berra and OF Mickey Mantle, each hit 3-run HRs for the Bombers. The White Sox had chased Yankees newly acquired veteran Starter Stubby Overmire for 6 hits and 5 runs in 2 innings work. The Yankee bullpen will settle down the Chicago batters, with Reliever Joe “Professor” Ostrowski picking up the win, as he went 4 innings, while allowing only 1 Chicago run. He is now 3-2 for the season. Yankees had chased White Sox Starter Marv Rotblatt for 5 runs. Reliever Lou Kretlow takes the loss, he is now at 2-2 mark. In the nightcap, the White Sox would edge the Yankees by the score of 5-4. Chicago Pitcher Randy Gumpert gets his 7th victory of the season. 1961-Yankees RF Roger Maris hit a 9th-inning HR off of A's Pitcher Jim Archer for his 25th HR of the 1961 AL season, putting him 7 games ahead of Babe Ruth's 60th HR pace of 1927. After the game, the A's Team Owner Charlie Finley makes his 1st MLB managerial change, replacing the recently-hired Joe “Flash” Gordon (26-43) in favor of veteran Ex-Yankees OF Hank Bauer, who will guide Kansas City to a 35-47 record. The team will finish in 9th place in the AL with a 61-100 record.
1974-Former Yankees 1B/DH Doug Mientiewicz (2007) was born.
In January of 2007, the Yankees had signed 1B/DH Doug Mientiewicz as an MLB Free Agent. He would appear in 72 games for the 2007 Yankees, while hitting .277 with 5 HRs and 24 RBIs before breaking his wrist in a run-in at 1B with Red Sox base runner Mike Lowell that ended his 2007 AL season. After the 2007 MLB post season, the Yankees would grant him MLB Free Agency. Doug would sign with the Pirates for the 2008 NL season.
1975-The Yankees had obtained OF Rich Coggins (1975-1976) from the Montreal Expos for Cash. Rich would hit .225 with 1 HR with 7 RBIs for the Yankees. To make room for him on the Yankees 25-man MLB roster, the Yankees would send down Rookie OF Kerry Dineen to AAA Syracuse (IL). On May 18,1976, he was traded by the Yankees along with P Ken Brett to the White Sox for OF/DH Carlos May.
1977-At Fenway Park, the Red Sox hitters Carl Yastrzemski (2), Bernie Carbo (2), and George Scott (1) hit 5 HRs in an 11-1 triumph over the Yankees. The 5 HRs will give the Red Sox an MLB record 16 in 3 games. Boston will hit 6 HRs on June 17th and 5 more HRs on June 18th, also against the Yankees. The Bombers had hit no HRs in the 3-game series.
1979-At Yankee Stadium, a crowd of 36,211 fans showed up to witness the return of Billy Martin as Yankees Manager in a 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays. Martin had been named to replace Manager Bob Lemon the previous day and began his 2nd stint as Yankees Skipper, a season earlier than previously announced by the team.
1985-Former Yankees Reliever Blake Parker (2016) was born.
On August 9,2016, Reliever Blake Parker was selected off waivers by the Yankees from the Mariners. For the 2016 Yankees, Parker had posted a 1-0 record with a 4.96 ERA and 1 save in 16 games. In October of 2016, Blake was claimed on waivers by the Angels from the Yankees.
1995-The Yankees had signed veteran MLB OF Darryl Strawberry as an MLB Free Agent. The team would send him to AAA Columbus (IL) to get into shape to play. He would appear in 32 games as a DH/OF for the 1995 Yankees, while hitting .276 with 3 HRs and 13 RBIs.
2000-At Fenway Park, a crowd of 33,370 fans see the Yankees romp over the Red Sox by the score of 22-1. This is Boston’s most lopsided home loss ever. The Yankees would score 16 runs in the last 2 innings of the game. Yankees had 2-run HRs hit by the following hitters; Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, Shane Spencer, Felix Jose and Scott Brosius. Yankees Starter Ramiro Mendoza picks up his 6th win of the season with relief help from Jeff Nelson and Mike Stanton. Red Sox Starter Brian Rose takes the loss, he is now 3-4 for the 2000 AL season. The 4 Red Sox pitchers that were used in the game give up a total of 19 hits and 22 runs. The 2000 Yankees are now at the 35-29 mark for the season.
2014-Former Yankees Reserve OF Bill “Big Bill” Renna (1953) had passed away. (1924-2014)
Before the start of the 1949 AL season, the Yankees had signed OF Bill Renna as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. For the 1953 Yankees, Bill would hit .314 with 2 HRs and 13 RBIs in 61 games; but he did not appear in the 1953 World Series against the Dodgers for the team. On December 16,1953, Bill was traded along with INF Don Bollweg, 3B Jim Finigan, P Johnny Gray, OF/1B Vic Power and Catcher Jim Robertson for P Harry Byrd, 1B Eddie Robinson, OF Tom Hamilton, OF Carmen Mauro and INF Loren Babe. He would play for A’s until 1956, when he was traded back to the Yankees along with Minor League P Moe Burtschy for veteran 1B/PH Eddie Robinson and Reserve INF Lou Skizas. Bill will never appear with the Yankees at the MLB level, instead he was sent down to the AAA Denver Bears (AA). The Yankees would trade him in 1959 to the Red Sox, where he would finish his MLB playing career. Overall, as an MLB player, Bill had appeared in 370 games, while hitting .239 with 28 HRs and 199 RBIs.
2014-The Blue Jays may be in 1st place in the AL East, but the Yankees remained a nemesis. Today, they would lose their 16th straight game at New Yankee Stadium by the score of 6-4, a streak dating back to 2012. David Phelps is the winner as the Yankees complete a 3-game sweep that brings them to within a game and a half of Toronto in the AL east standings.
2015-Yankees Alex Rodriguez joins the MLB 3,000 hit club with a 1st-inning HR off of Tigers Starter Justin Verlander. He becomes the 29th member of the 3,000 MLB hit club, the 3rd player to do so with a long ball, after Wade Boggs and his former Yankees teammate Derek Jeter, who had been the last player to collect the milestone hit in 2011.
2023-Former Yankees Reliever George Frazier (1981-1983) had passed away.(1954-2023)
On June 7,1981, Minor League Pitcher George Frazier was sent by the Cardinals to the Yankees to complete an earlier deal made on February 16,1981. The Cardinals had sent a Player to be Named Later to the Yankees for Shortstop Rafael Santana. George had appeared in 140 games for the Yankees, while posting an 8-9 record with a 3.25 ERA and 12 saves. He had lost 3 games to the Dodgers in the 1981 World Series. On February 5,1984, George was traded by the Yankees along with a Player to be Named Later and Reserve OF Otis Nixon to the Indians for a Player to be Named Later and MLB INF Toby Harrah. On February 8,1984, the Indians would send Minor League P Rick Browne to the Yankees, who in return will send Minor League P Guy Elston to the Indians to complete the trade. George would finish his MLB pitching Career in 1987 with a record of 35-43 with a 4.20 ERA and 29 saves in 420 MLB games. He had appeared in 2 World Series (1981 Yankees and the 1987 Twins). After retiring as an active player, he became a long-time broadcaster for the Rockies.
June 20th
1908-Former Yankees INF Billy Werber (1930-1933) was born. (1908-2009)
The former Duke Univ. graduate, INF Billy Werber would hit .250 in 7 games for the 1930-1933 Yankees. On May 12,1933, Billy and Pitcher George Pipgras were sold by the Yankees to the Red Sox for $20,000 Cash. Later, he would play for the A’s and the Reds. While playing with the Reds, Werber became the 1st player to bat in the 1st televised MLB game, a contest against the Brooklyn Dodgers on August 26,1939. The next season, he would bat leadoff for the Reds hitting .370 in the 1940 World Series. He would finish his 11-season MLB playing career with the Giants. When Billy had passed away in 2009, he was the last living teammate of HOF Player Babe Ruth.
1911-In a Bronx 3-2 win against the Senators, Highlanders 1B Hal Chase makes a MLB record of 21 putouts.
1913-After the Yankees win the opener of a twin-bill by the score of 9-3, Senators Starter Bert Gallia hits 3 of the 1st 4 Yankee batters that he faces in the 1st inning of the nightcap. Three more Yankee batters are plunked by Nats Relievers Joe Engel (2) and Tom Hughes (1) for a record 6 hit batters. The outcome is the same as the 1st game; Bombers win again by the score of 9-3. Yankees’ leadoff hitter Bert Daniels puts his name in the AL record book, when he gets hit 3 times.
1916-Tilly Walker's HR over the Fenway Park LF wall is the only HR the Red Sox will hit this 1916 AL season, but it is the lone Boston score today as the Yankees win the game by a score of 4-1. Inserted as a defensive replacement late in the game, Red Sox Shortstop Everett Scott starts a string of 1,307 consecutive games, all played at that position. On May 6,1925, he will end the streak as a Yankees player, when he is benched by Yankees manager Miller Huggins. It will be the best streak in MLB history until Lou Gehrig's 2,130 games in 1939
1918-The Yankees would buy veteran hurler John Henry Robinson from Little Rock (SA) for Cash. He would post a 2-4 record with a 3.00 ERA in 11 games, before the team would release him.
1919-Former Yankees Co-Team Owner William “Bill” Devery (1903-1914) had passed away. (1854-1919)
Frank Farrell and Bill Devery were the 1st team owners of the New York Highlanders - who, later would become the Yankees. On January 3,1903, they had purchased the AL Baltimore Orioles franchise for $18,000. They were allowed to purchase the team and move it to New York City because of their ties with the local NYC politics. All previous attempts to move a team to Manhattan were blocked by the NL Giants with Manager John McGraw’s political connections. Devery had been an openly corrupt NYC Police Chief. He had been forced out of the Police Department, shortly before purchasing the team. After the 1914 AL season, the duo aided by help from AL President Ban Johnson would sell the franchise to 2 new Team Co-Owners Colonel Jacob Ruppert and Captain Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Houston for $460,000. AL President Johnson was able to get rid 2 Team Owners who were very questionable in character (aka gambling) for 2 businessmen, who had good character and money to build a successful AL team franchise in New York City.
1928-Former Yankees Pinch Runner Arthur “Dutch” Schult (1953) was born.(1928-2014)
Art Schult had played 5 seasons in the MLB for 4 different teams. He was in 59 games at 1st base and 56 in the outfield. He was 1st up with the Yankees; his next team was the Reds, then moving on to the Senators. Art’s last active MLB season was with the 1960 Cubs. Overall, he would hit for a .264 BA with 6 HRs and 54 RBIs, while playing in 164 MLB games. He would appear in only 7 games as a Yankees player, all of them as a pinch-runner, but he scored 3 runs.
1929-Former Yankees Minor League P Wally Burnette was born. (1929-2003)
Before the start of 1948 AL season, the Yankees had signed P Wally Burnette as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. He would never pitch for the Yankees at the MLB level. After spending 2 years of active duty in the Army; he would win 21 games with the 1953 AA Binghamton Triplets (EL). In 1954, he was promoted to the AAA Kansas City Blues (AA), while posting a 12-13 record with a 4.50 ERA in 35 games. In 1955, he was with the AAA Denver Bears (AA) going 15-12 with a 5.62 ERA in 33 games. In 1956, he had started the season with the AAA Denver Bears (AA), posting a 7-6 record with a 4.08 ERA and 1 save in 20 games. On July 11,1956, Wally was traded by the Yankees to Kansas City for P Tommy Lasorda, who was assigned by the Yankees to their AAA club, the Denver Bears (AA). In 1956, Wally would finish with a 6-8 record with 2.89 ERA as a A's Rookie hurler, but he would hurt his pitching arm in the A’s 1957 MLB Spring Training Camp. After 1958 AL season was over, Wally was gone from MLB finishing with an overall MLB pitching record of 14-21 along with a 3.56 ERA and 1 save in 68 games for the A's.
1934-The AL leading Yankees trip the Indians twice by scores of 3-2 and 3-0 in a doubleheader played at Yankee Stadium. The Bombers would tie the 1st game on Frank Crosetti's solo HR in the 8th inning off of Tribe P Bob Weiland; then they win the game on Lou Gehrig's 18th HR in the 9th inning. Lefty Gomez, in relief of Starter Johnny Broaca is the winner. In 2nd game, Hal Trosky Sr.'s single is the only hit off of Yankees Starter Red Ruffing, who also knocks in a run.
1939-The Yankees had re-obtained on waivers veteran hurler Jimmie DeShong from the Senators. For the 1934-1935 Yankees, he would post a 10-8 record with a 3.82 ERA and 6 saves in 60 games. For the 1939 Senators, Jimmy had gone 0-3 with an 8.63 ERA in 7 games. He didn’t appear in any games for the 1939 Yankees. He was assigned to their AA team, the Newark Bears (IL), where he went 1-1 in 6 games for the club.
1940-The Yankees would lose to the White Sox by the score of 1-0 in 11 innings for their 6th straight loss, then protest a "catch" by Sox LF Moose Solters, contending he dropped the ball in the 2nd inning, when he was reaching for his cap. Umpire George Quinn apparently missed the error and the protest is upheld. The game will be replayed on September 18th, but for several seasons, all of today's records count including Monte Pearson's loss and Johnny Rigney's win, will count. It is the 1st time since 1919 that the Yankees have been shut out in extra innings by 1 pitcher: they lost on May 19,1935 in extra innings to 2 pitchers; Lefty Stewart and Lloyd Brown.
1946-A Fortune Magazine story gives some rare details of MLB finances, showing the 1945 New York Yankees revenue of $1.6 million and profit of $306,000, cut to $201,000 after Minor League Team losses (15 teams). Of the gross income, $896,000 is from home game ticket sales.
1946-The Yankees had purchased OF Hal Peck from Philadelphia for an undisclosed amount of Cash. He doesn’t play for the 1946 Yankees, because he had suffered a nervous breakdown and never reported to the team. On December 6,1946, Hal was traded by the Yankees along with Minor League P Gene Bearden and MLB P Al Gettel to the Indians for Catcher Sherman Lollar and veteran INF Ray Mack.
1956-At Detroit's Briggs Stadium, Yankees Slugger Mickey Mantle poles 2 Billy Hoeft pitch into the Right CF bleachers, something no other player had done since the bleachers were built in the late 1930s. The Yankees would win the game by a score of 7-4.
1963-In the 1st annual Mayor’s Trophy Game between the Yankees and Mets, the Mets down the Yankees by the score of 6-2 before a crowd of 50,742 fans at Yankee Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for June 3rd, but rain had postponed the game until June 20th. The Mets would use 2 hurlers: Jay Hook and Carl Willey as their pitchers in the game. Mets Manager Casey Stengel allegedly looking to get back at his old employer the Yankees, insisted using his Willey, best pitcher rather than Reliever Ken Mackenzie. The Yankees hurler Stan Williams took the loss for the game. Most of the crowd of the 50,742 fans were the “New Breed” of Mets fans, who had their banners confiscated by Yankee Stadium employees upon entering “The House that Ruth Built.” The profits of the game are annually turned over to the sandlot baseball programs of the New York City.
1979-Former Yankees Pitcher Scott Patterson (2008) was born.
On June 17,2006, Pitcher Scott Patterson was purchased by the Yankees from Independent League team, Lancaster (AL). On October 15, 2006, Scott was granted MLB Free Agency by the Yankees. On November 1, 2006, he was signed as an MLB Free Agent by the Yankees. He would spend the 2007 season pitching at AAA Columbus. On October 29, 2007, Scott was granted MLB Free Agency by the team. On November 20, 2007, he was resigned by the team, as an MLB Free Agent. Scott would appear in 1 game for the 2008 Yankees with no record. On September 11, 2008, he was selected off waivers by the Padres from the Yankees.
1983-AL All-Star Yankee OF/DH Bobby Murcer retires as an active MLB Player. (Yankees: 1965-1966,1969-1974,1979-1983); Giants (1975-1976); Cubs (1977-1979).
Bobby Murcer was groomed to be the next Mickey Mantle, but it didn’t work out that way, but he still had a very good career with the team. In 1964,Yankees MLB Scout Tom Greenwade, the same MLB Scout, who had signed Mickey Mantle, had signed him. The Dodgers would offer him more money, but he felt he had a better chance to play in the World Series with the Yankees. Like Mickey, he started out as an infielder but he was converted into an outfielder. Bobby would miss the 1967-1968 AL seasons due to the active-duty military service with the Army. In 1969, he would return to the Yankees. He would make the AL All-Star team in 1971-1974. He had won AL Golden Glove in 1972. His best Yankees season with the bat was in 1971, when he hit .331 with 25 HRs and 94 RBIs. In the winter of 1974, he was traded by the team to the Giants for NL All-Star OF Bobby Bonds. In 1977, the Giants would trade Bobby to the Cubs. During the 1979 MLB season, Bobby would return to the Yankees in a trade with the Cubs for a Minor League Pitcher. He would to play in the OF/ DH. His 1979 Yankees homecoming became bittersweet for Murcer as his close friend and Team Captain Catcher Thurman Munson was killed in a jet plane crash in August of 1979. Bobby Murcer and Lou Piniella would give the eulogy for Munson. On the night of Munson's burial, Bobby Murcer homered and also drove in the winning run to give the Yankees a victory over the Orioles. He always considered that one of the shining moments of his MLB playing career. In 1983, Bobby would finish out his Yankees active playing career. He had played in 1,256 games for the team, while hitting .278 with 175 HRs and 678 RBIs. He had appeared in 1 World Series with the Yankees (1981) with no hits. In 1987, he was a Yankees MLB Coach. Then Murcer was a Yankees Broadcaster until the date of his passing on July 12, 2008, except for the 1989 AL season; when he was an Assistant General Manager for the club.
1983-Former Yankees DH/1B Kendrys Morales (2019) was born.
On May 14, 2019, 1B/DH Kendrys Morales was traded by the Oakland A’s to the Yankees for Player to be Named Later or Cash. He would appear in 19 games for the Yankees, while hitting just .177 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs. On July 2, 2019, he would be released by the team. The Yankees had just acquired Veteran 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion, making him expendable.
1984-At Detroit, Yankees Rookie Reliever Jose Rijo falls to a 1-7 record for the season, when he serves up a 2-out 3-run HR to Tigers 3B Howard Johnson in the 13th inning. Detroit wins the game by a score of 9-6. Alan Trammell, Lance Parrish and Chet Lemon, also had hit HRs for the Tigers, who draw their 3rd straight 40,000 plus crowd.
1998-The Indians would retire Former Pitcher Bob Lemon's uniform no. 21 prior to the team's 5-3 loss to the Yankees. Lemon had been a Hall of Fame Pitcher for the Tribe during the 1940’s and 1950’s. He was an MLB Pitching Coach and Manager for the Yankees.
1999-Current Yankees Minor League Catcher/2B/DH Anthony Seigler was born.
Anthony Seigler was the 23rd selection in the 1st round of the 2018 MLB Amateur Player Draft by the Yankees. He drew a lot of attention because, in addition to being a switch-hitter, he was also ambidextrous, pitching with both arms, while not catching at Cartersville HS in Cartersville, GA. The Yankees had drafted him as a Catcher and not as a Pitcher, however, as he was recognized as one of the best all-around Catchers in the Draft, thanks to his excellent bat combined with catching skills and excellent athleticism. He had hit .182 for Team USA, when they won the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup, with 8 walks. He tied for 4th in the event in walks. He was signed with the Yankees on June 9th for a signing bonus of $2.8 million. In his 1st pro baseball season in 2018, he had split his time between 2 Rookie League teams: the Class A Pulaski Yankees (APPL) and the GCL Yankees West. He would hit a combined .266 in 24 games. For the 2019 season, he had played for the Class A Charleston RiverDogs (SAL). He did not play baseball in 2020 due COVIDS outbreak that canceled all Minor League seasons. In 2021, he had played for the Hudson Valley Renegades (Hight-A East). In 2022, he started out the season with the Class A Tampa Tarpons (FSL). On May 21, 2022, he was promoted to the Class A+ Hudson Renegades (SAL). For the 2024 minor league season, he is playing with AA Somerset, he still having bat problems with low BA's for the 2nd straight season.
2001-Former Yankees Pitcher Robert “Bob” Keegan had passed away. (1920-2001)
Before the start of the 1946 MLB season, the Yankees had signed Robert “Bob” Keegan, as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. He was fresh out of the Army Air Corps, where he had been a Navigator on a B-24 bomber crew during World War II. The Yankees would assign him to the Binghamton Triplets (EL), where he posted a 5-6 record with a 3.87 ERA in his 1st season of pro baseball. Keegan would struggle, while pitching in the 1946-1951 Yankees farm organization. He would have only 2 seasons above a .500 pitching record during those seasons, going 8-6 in 1948 in a split minor league season with the 2 AAA clubs: Kansas City Blues and the Newark Bears. In 1949, he was 14-9 with the AAA Kansas City Blues (AA) and the Syracuse Chiefs (IL). It appears that the Syracuse club knew a good thing when they saw it. On April 3,1952, they had purchased Bob’s player contract from the Yankees. The right-hander would post a 20-11 record with a 2.64 ERA. The 1952 International League season was hardly over, when Syracuse would sell Bob to the White Sox. He would pitch for Chicago for 6 AL seasons, finishing with a 40-36 record along with a 3.66 ERA and 5 saves in 135 games. In 1954, he had a 16-9 record and was named to the AL All-Star team pitching staff.
2006-Former Yankees 3B Billy “Bull” Johnson (1943,1946-1951) had passed away. (1918-2006)
Before the start of 1936 AL season, 3B Billy Johnson was signed as an MLB Amateur Free Agent by the Yankees. In 1943, he would reach the MLB with the Yankees by hitting .280 with 5 HRs and 94 RBIs in 155 games. Johnson would miss the next 2 MLB seasons, when he entered the Merchant Marines in March 1944. Then he was inducted into the Army in September of 1944. In May of 1946, Billy was discharged from the Army. He would return to play for the Yankees. Billy had appeared in a total of 4 World Series (1943,1947,1949-1950) with the club. In 1947, Billy was a member of the AL All-Star team. Johnson had played in 735 games for the Yankees, while hitting .275 with 45 HRs and 388 RBIs. On May 14,1951, Billy Johnson was traded by the Yankees to the Cardinals for 1B Don Bollweg and $15,000 Cash. For the 1951 Yankees, Billy had appeared in just 15 games going 12 for 40 before the trade was made. He was replaced at 3B by Rookie INF Gil McDougald. Casey Stengel sent 1B Don Bollweg to the AAA Kansas City Blues (AA).
2010-The Yankees are back in 1st place in the AL east, just 1 game ahead of the surging Red Sox and the slumping Rays, after Starter CC Sabathia pitches 8 scoreless innings as the Bronx Bombers shut out the Mets and Starter Johan Santana by the score of 4-0. All the Yankees runs in the game come on Mark Teixeira's Grand Slam HR.
2022-The Yankees are the 1st team to reach 50 wins this season with a 4-2 defeat of the Rays. Gerrit Cole pitches 7 no-hit innings before Isaac Paredes leads off the 8th with a single. The Rays tie the score at 2 later that inning as Closer Clay Holmes allows his 1st run since his initial outing of the year, but the Yanks win it in the 9th on a single by Josh Donaldson, a triple by Aaron Hicks and a sacrifice fly by Jose Trevino.

1879-Former Yankees Catcher Jake Zalusky (1903) was born. (1877-1935)
For the 1903 Yankees, Catcher Jake Zalusky had appeared in just 7 games. He would hit .313 with No HRs with 1 RBI. In February of 1904, he was traded along with Rookie Pitcher Eddie Quick to the AA Toledo (AA) for Rookie Catcher Red Kleinow.
1897-Former Yankees Reserve INF Spencer Adams (1926) was born. (1897-1970)
On January 20,1926, the Yankees had purchased Reserve INF Spencer Adams from the Senators. As a Reserve INF for the 1926 Yankees, Adams would hit .120 with No HRs and 1 RBI in 28 games. He is one of the 1st Mormons to play in the MLB. He would finish his MLB playing career with the 1927 Cardinals.
1906-Former Yankees Pitcher Russell (Russ) “Sheriff” Van Atta (1933-1935) was born. (1906-1986)
On September 12,1932, Russ Van Atta was purchased by the Yankees from the AA St. Paul Saints (AA) for Cash plus 2 Players to be Named Later. Russ would go 15-9 with a 4.94 ERA and 1 save in 59 games for the 1933-1935 Yankees. He had an amazing MLB Pitching debut: he not only shut out the Senators by the score of 16-0; he also went 4 for 4 at the plate. During the winter of 1934, he had injured his hand by cutting it. Russ was limited to relief with some Spot-Starts for the rest of his MLB Pitching career. On May 15,1935, Russ was purchased by the Browns from the Yankees. He would post a 18-32 record with a 5.95 ERA and 7 saves in 45 games with for the Browns. Overall, as an MLB Pitcher, his final pitching career totals was a 33-41 record with a 5.60 ERA and 6 saves in 76 games.
1916-At Fenway Park in Boston, Red Sox Starter Rube Foster No-Hits the Yankees for the 1st No-hitter thrown at the ballpark. He beats Yankees Starter Bob Shawkey by a score of 2-0. Harry Hooper would lead the Red Sox offense with 3 hits.
1918-Former Yankees Pitcher, MLB Pitching Coach, MLB Manager and Baseball Executive Edward “Steady Eddie” Lopat (1948-1955) was born. (1918-1992).
On February 24,1948, the Yankees had obtained veteran AL Starter Eddie Lopat from the White Sox for All-Star Catcher Aaron Robinson, Pitchers Fred Bradley and Bill Wight. Ed had posted a 50-49 record with a 3.18 ERA and 72 complete games in 4 seasons with Chicago. In 1947, he would enjoy a good season for White Sox by posting a 16-13 record with a 2.81 ERA in 31 games along with 22 complete games. From 1948 to 1954, Eddie will win 113 games for the Yankees as part of the Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi, Whitey Ford (1950,1953) starting rotation that won 5 straight World Championships (1949-1953). Ed had helped a young Whitey Ford with his MLB pitching development by using an 8MM camera to study the pitcher’s movements. Eddie was known, as “The Junkman.” He would be started by Yankees Manager Casey Stengel in-between Bronx fastball Starters Allie Reynolds and Vic Raschi, to throw off the timing of opposition club’s hitters.
Some Eddie’s Yankees pitching career highlights are 113 wins with a .657 WP, with 20 career shutouts and 91 complete games. His Yankees Pitching career ERA was 3.21. In 1951, he had a 21-9 record along with a 2.91 ERA in 31 games for the Yankees. In 5 World Series (1949-1953) with the Yankees, Eddie would post a 4-1 record with a 2.60 ERA in 7 games with 3 complete games. In 1951, he was named to the AL All-Star team pitching staff. In 1953, he would lead the AL Pitchers with a 2.42 ERA. On July 30,1955, Eddie was traded by the Yankees to the Orioles for P Jim “Hot Rod” McDonald. Lopat had a 4-8 record with a 3.74 ERA in 16 games with the 1955 Yankees at the time of his trade. On October 10,1955, Eddie Lopat was released by the Orioles. With the 1955 Birds, he would have a 3-4 record with a 4.22 ERA in 10 games. In the fall of 1955, he was released by the Orioles. Then Ed would return to the Yankees organization. He would manage in the Yankees Minor League system with the 1956-1958 AAA Richmond Virginians (IL). In 1959, he was a Yankees MLB Scout. In 1960, he was the Yankees MLB Pitching Coach for Manager Casey Stengel, replacing long time Pitching Coach Jim Turner, who had been fired by the Yankees Front Office. Turner would go to the Reds Organization for the 1960 NL season. In October of 1960, Eddie would leave the Yankees, when new Manager Ralph Houk took over the team; he had named former Yankees Pitcher Johnny Sain, as his new MLB Yankees Pitching Coach. For the 1961 AL season, Eddie was an MLB Pitching Coach for the Twins. Then in 1962, he would move to the Kansas City A’s organization as their MLB Pitching Coach. In 1963-1964, he would become the Manager of the A’s, while posting a 90-124 record. Later, he would work for the A’s Front Office as their General Manager. Eddie Lopat was one of the few baseball people, who got along with Kansas City A’s Team Owner Charley Finley. When the A’s moved to the West Coast, in the fall of 1967, Eddie declined to go along the team’s relocation, instead he would head back East, joining the Montreal Expos organization working in their front office; handling their Player Development Department.
1930-Bronx Slugger Babe Ruth hits 3-HRs in 1 game for the 1st time in his MLB player career, but the Yankees still lose to Philadelphia by a score of 15-7. The Yankees had been leading the game by a score of 6-0, when the A’s scored 9 runs in the 7th inning. Ruth’s 3rd HR of the game went out of Shibe Park over the RF wall landing 1 block away. In the 2nd game of the doubleheader, the A’s win again beating the Yankees by a score of 4-1.
1936-Former Yankees Pitcher Ambrose “Putty” Puttmann (1903-1905) had passed away. (1880-1936)
In September of 1903, hurler Ambrose Puttmann was drafted by the Highlanders from the AA Helena (PCL) in the 1903 MLB Rule 5 Player Draft. He would post a 6-7 record with a 3.38 ERA and 1 save in 29 games for the team. In April of 1906, Ambrose was purchased by the Cardinals from the Highlanders, where he went 2-2 for them in his last active MLB season.
1939-The Yankees had announced 1B Lou Gehrig's retirement as an active player, based on the medical report that he has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The 36-year-old All-Star 1B will remain with the team for the rest of 1939 AL season as the Team Captain. Lou will be in the Yankees dugout in uniform for the 1939 World Series against the Reds.
1950-The Yankees All-Star CF Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th MLB career hit, a 7th-inning single off of Indians' hurler Marino Pieretti, as the Yankees win the game by a score of 8-2. Joe DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally Moses as the only active MLB players with 2,000 or more hits. Eddie Lopat is the winning pitcher for the Yankees, running his lifetime AL Pitching career record against the Indians to a 25-6 mark.
1951-Former Yankees Minor League P Bob Polinsky was born.
In the 1st round of the January 1973 MLB Amateur Player Draft (2ndry phase) the Yankees had selected P Bob Polinsky. After signing with the Yankees, Polinsky would move up the Yankees farm system, rather quickly by pitching for 1974-1975 AA West Haven (EL), then he would move to the AAA Syracuse Chiefs (IL) in 1976. On April 5, 1977, Polinsky was traded by the Yankees along with OF/DH Oscar Gamble, Minor League P La Marr Hoyt and $200,000 Cash to the White Sox for Shortstop Bucky Dent. In 1978, he would return to the Yankees organization, pitching for the AAA Tacoma Yankees (PCL). In 1979, he would pitch for the AA West Haven Yankees (EL) and the AAA Columbus Clippers (IL). Bob Polinsky would never pitch in the MLB.
1958-Tigers Starter Frank Lary pitches his 3rd straight shutout, beating the Yankees Starter Duke Maas by a score of 1-0. Tigers RF Al Kaline throws out Yankees baserunner Pitcher Duke Maas at home plate; also, he hits his 7th HR of the 1958 AL season to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.
1960-In Detroit, veteran Yankees Starter Whitey Ford out-duels Tigers “Yankee Killer” Frank Lary to give New York a 6-0 victory. Yankees All-Star CF Mickey Mantle is 3-for-5 with 2 HRs off of Tigers Starter.
1964-The Yankees move into 1st place in the AL by 8% points over the Orioles, as they out pitch the White Sox to win a doubleheader sweep by scores of 2-0 and 2-1. Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard solo HRs win the opener by the score of 2-0 for Bronx Starter Jim Bouton against White Sox veteran hurler Juan Pizarro. An error wins the nightcap 2-1 in the 17th inning. The Yankees would sweep the 4-game series, with their pitching staff giving up just 1 run in 41 innings; they will take 9 games from White Sox in 11 days.
1966-In the 1st game of a Tuesday twin bill played at Yankee Stadium before a crowd 29,499 fans, there are 2 on and 2 outs in the 9th inning when Orioles RF Frank Robinson makes a spectacular catch against New York's Roy White, diving into the stands over the Short RF Fence and disappearing from view. He emerges with the ball and it is ruled a catch preserving a 7-5 Orioles victory, rather than an 8-7 defeat. Orioles Starter Wally Bunker gets the win, while veteran Reliever Stu Miller gets the save. Yankees Starter Mel Stottlemyre takes the loss, dropping to a 6-7 mark. In the Nightcap, the Bronx Bombers will bounce back with an 8-3 victory. Tom Tresh hits a HR for the Bombers, while Reliever Hal Reniff picks-up his 1st win of the season with 5 innings of scoreless work, who had replaced Starter Fritz Peterson in the 3rd inning, who gets a, no-decision. The 1966 Yankees are now are 27-34-1 for the 1966 AL season.
1966-Minor League Note: Satchel Paige makes his final pro baseball pitching appearance, going the 1st 2 innings for the Peninsula Grays (CL) against the Greensboro Yankees. Satchel gives up 2 runs. As noted by historian Bill Deane, Peninsula's regular Catcher, Johnny Bench took the night off.
1967-In a weird doubleheader split between the Yankees and Red Sox at Fenway Park. In the 1st game the Yankees had a 5-2 lead in the 11th inning, only to lose the game by a score of 6-5. In the 2nd game, the Yankees are trailing in the 9th inning by the score of 3-2; they score 4 runs to win the game by a score of 6-3.
1981-Former Yankees Reserve 1B/OF Garrett Jones (2015) was born.
On December 19, 2014, 1B/OF Garrett Jones was traded by the Marlins along with Minor League P Domingo German and MLB Starter Nathan Eovaldi to the Yankees for Pitcher David Phelps, INF Martin Prado and Cash. He had appeared in 67 games for the team, while hitting .215 with 5 HRs and 17 RBIs. On August 20, 2015, Jones was released by the Yankees. He would play in Japan for the 2016-2017 baseball seasons.
1988-With 2 outs in the 9th inning, Tigers Shortstop Alan Trammell blasts a Grand Slam HR to give the Tigers, a 7-6 victory over the Yankees.
1989-The Yankees had traded OF Rickey Henderson back to Oakland for 2 Pitchers: Eric Plunk and Greg Cadaret and MLB OF/DH Luis Polonia. Facing MLB Free Agency at the end of the 1989 AL season, the Yankees had decided to trade Henderson, rather than let him walk away. In 3 seasons with the team, Rickey had hit .288 with 513 RBIs and 326 stolen bases. Plunk was a former Yankee Minor League Pitcher, who had been traded in the original Henderson trade with the A’s. Greg Cadaret was in his 2nd MLB season with the A’s. Luis Polonia was in his 3rd season with the team, he was hitting .286 for Oakland at the time of the trade.
1989-White Sox Catcher Carlton Fisk surpasses Yankees HOF Catcher Yogi Berra as the AL leader for career HRs by a Catcher as his 307th HR that helps to beat the Yankees by a score of 7-3.
1996-The Yankees had acquired lefty Reliever Billy Brewer from the Dodgers for Minor League Class AA Pitcher Mike Judd, while giving veteran MLB Reliever Steve Howe his player release. Brewer went 1-0 in 4 games for the 1996 Yankees before becoming an MLB Free Agent. He would sign with the Reds for 1997 NL season.
1996-In another MLB roster move, the Yankees would send P Jim Mecir to AAA Columbus Clippers (IL), while calling up Pitcher Dale Polley, who went 1-3 with a 7.89 ERA in 32 games. He would be released by the team in the fall, then he would sign a Minor League deal for the 1997 season with the Yankees. He would spend the 1997 season with the AAA Columbus Clippers (IL).
1997-Tribe Slugger Manny Ramirez has 6 RBIs, 4 on a Grand Slam HR to lead the host Indians to a 13-4 win over the Yankees Starter Andy Pettitte.
1998-Tribe Starter Bartolo Colon coasts to an 11-0 shutout over the Yankees.
2000-Former Yankees OF Edward “Bud “Stewart (1948) had passed away. (1916-2000)
In March of 1947, OF Bud Stewart was acquired by the Yankees, after hitting .358 for the 1947 AAA Kansas City Blues (AA). Bud would begin the 1948 AL season in the Bronx, but after just 6 games with the team, he was traded to the Senators on May 13,1948 for OF Leon Culberson and $20,000 Cash.
2002-Minor League Note: During the NYPL game between the short-season New Jersey Cardinals and the Staten Island Yankees, a fan hops a fence goes and goes onto the field to argue an Umpire's call at 1B. The 38-year old woman is at the game with her 8-year-old daughter's Brownie troop.
2005-After building 10-2 lead at Yankee Stadium, the Devil Rays would lose to the Yankees by a score of 20-11, making it the 2nd time in franchise history the team is ahead by 8 or more runs and lose by 9 runs or more tallies. No other club history has ever achieved this dubious distinction as the D-Rays with their 1999 defeat to the Indians; the Tribe now have accomplished the feat twice.
2015-Tigers Slugger J. D. Martinez hits 3 HRs and drives in 6 runs in Detroit's 12-4 win over the Yankees. Martinez victimizes Bronx Starter Masahiro Tanaka twice, also he adds the 3rd HR off of Rookie Pitcher Danny Burawa, who is making his MLB Pitching debut for New York.

1890-Former Yankees Reserve OF/PH Michael “Mickey” Fitzgerald (1911) was born. (1890-1945)
With the 1911 Yankees, Reserve OF/PH Mike Fitzgerald would hit .270 in 19 games. In July of 1911, Mike was traded by the Yankees along with Pitcher Ed Klepfer and Cash to Sioux City (WL) for Minor League Pitcher Jeff Clarke.
1912-The Red Sox would beat the Yankees by a score of 10-3 to complete a 5-game sweep, in which they score 55 runs against the Yankees pitching staff during the 5-game series.

1928-At Yankee Stadium, Journeyman Bronx hurler Hank Johnson blanks the star-studded Philadelphia A’s by the score of 4-0. In the game for Connie Mack's team are Ty Cobb, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Tris Speaker and Lefty Grove, who were future Hall of Fame Player’s. Johnson is now 3-2 for the 1928 AL season. Meanwhile A’s starter Lefty Grove takes a complete game loss, is now 8-3. Yankees 2B Tony Lazzeri hits a HR for the team.

1930-Yankees 1B Lou Gehrig hits 3 HRs in the 2nd game of doubleheader against the A’s. The Yankees would sweep the doubleheader beating Philadelphia by scores of 10-1 and 20-13. His Yankees teammate OF Babe Ruth had hit 2 HRs in the opener, adds another HR in the nightcap. Babe will hit 6 HRs in the 3-game series against the A’s.
1934-Former Yankees Minor League and MLB OF Russ Snyder was born.
Before the start of 1953 AL Season 19-yearold OF Russ Snyder was signed as an MLB Amateur Free Agent with the Yankees. A left-hand hitter, who had attended the Univ. of Nebraska, he would begin playing pro ball in the Yankees organization in 1953 by hitting an astounding .432 for the Class D McAlester Rockets (SSL) with 240 base hits in 556 at-bats. One would think that this opening performance would get Russ a quick look at the "Show", but it would take 6 more seasons in the Minors before he got inside an MLB stadium. On April 12,1959, the Yankees had traded OF Russ Snyder and INF Tommy Carroll to the Kansas City A’s for OF Bob Martyn and INF Mike Baxes. His trade was a rare mistake by Yankees GM George Weiss. Both players received by the Yankees from the A’s were sent to their AAA Richmond team (IL). After hitting .336 for the 1959 AAA Portland Beavers (PCL), Russ was brought up by the A’s. Then he would hit .313 in 73 games for the team. After the 1960 AL season, Russ Snyder was traded by the team to the Orioles. From 1961-1967, he was a semi-regular in the Orioles outfield, hitting .305 in 1962 and .306 for the 1966 World Champions. Russ had appeared in 3 games in the 1966 World Series against the Dodgers, he had 1 base hit with 1 RBI to help his club win the 1966 World Series. He would close out his 12-year MLB playing career with a lifetime .271 BA in 1,365 games, after wearing the uniforms of the White Sox, Indians and the Brewers in his last 3 MLB seasons. Russ had spent 7 seasons (1953-1959) in the Minor Leagues, where he hit for a .316 average in 761 games. Snyder had played an uninterrupted 18 consecutive years of pro baseball, a feat in itself. He had started playing pro ball at age 19 in 1953 and finished his MLB playing career at age 36 in 1970.
1934-The Tigers would take over 1st place in the AL by beating the Senators by a score of 11-3, dislodging the Yankees, who had lost their game to the Indians by the score of 4-1.
1936-Former Yankees Pitcher James “Jim” Bronstad (1959) was born. (1936-2022)
Before the start of 1955 AL season, Pitcher Jim Bronstad was signed by the Yankees as an MLB Amateur Free Agent. Bronstad had spent 10 years in pro baseball from 1955-1964, mostly pitching in the high Minor Leagues, after the 1958 season. His best season came with the 1957 AA Binghamton Triplets (EL), when he had a 15-8 record with a 3.38 ERA. Jim's Minor League record showed that he had appeared in 272 games, while posting an 86-95 record along with a career 3.74 ERA. With the 1959 Yankees, Jim Bronstad would post a 0-3 record with a 5.56 ERA along with 2 saves in 16 games. On July 26,1959, the Yankees would option Jim to AAA Richmond (IL), clear roster space for newly acquired P Gary Blaylock from the Cardinals. Jim would spend the 1960-1963 seasons pitching for the Yankees AAA Club, the Richmond Virginians (IL). On March 23,1963, the Senators would purchase Jim from the Yankees. He made it back to the MLB during the 1963-1964 AL seasons for stints as a Reliever for the Senators, finishing his MLB Pitching Career with an overall 1-7 record with an 5.48 ERA and 3 saves in 45 games.
1953-Former Yankees OF Charlie “Eagle Eye” Hemphill (1908-1911) had passed away. (1876-1953)
On November 5,1907, OF Charlie Hemphill was traded by the St. Louis Browns along with Pitcher Fred Glade and 2B Harry Niles to the Yankees for INF Hobe Ferris, OF Danny Hoffman and 2B Jimmy Williams. For the 1908-1911 Yankees, he had appeared in 386 games, while hitting .269 with 1 HR and 90 RBIs.
1959-At Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium, Yankees Slugger Mickey Mantle drives in 6 runs with a triple and 2 HRs to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 13-6 victory over the A’s. Yankees 1B Bill “Moose” Skowron adds his 4th HR in 4 days to move Yankees to 3 games out of 1st place in the AL.
1961-Yankees RF Roger Maris leads the Bronx Bombers on an 8-3 thrashing of the A’s by belting his 27th HR of the 1961 AL season. He would add 2 doubles and a single to game tally. Maris has now, has hit 20 HRs in the past 30 days (May 24th-June 22nd) to tie the MLB mark set by NL Slugger Ralph Kiner in 1947.
1965-Yankees Ray Barker's MLB-record-tying 2nd consecutive pinch-hit HR is wasted in a 1st-game, a 6-2 Yankees loss to the A's. Slugger Mickey Mantle adds an HR in the opener, but in the 4-2 nightcap win, he tries to score from 2nd on a wild pitch and snaps an upper-thigh hamstring. He will be out of action for 3 weeks. The June 21st Sports Illustrated cover features Mickey Mantle with the prescient title "New York Yankees: End of an Era?”
1977-Yankees 3B Graig Nettles 3-run HR and Reggie Jackson’s 2-run triple snap the Yankees 5-game losing streak and create a comeback win coming from behind to a 12-11 win at Detroit.
1996-In Cleveland, Bronx Slugger Ruben Sierra HRs from both sides of the plate as the Yankees beat the Indians by a score of 11-9. One of Sierra's HRs comes in the 9-run, 6th inning by the Yankees. Tribe Slugger Albert Belle is back from a 2-game AL suspension, he is 3-for-5 with a HR, while veteran Eddie Murray adds his 488th MLB career HR for the Tribe. The game takes 4-hours, 10 minutes to play.
2010-Minor League Note: The GCL Yankees rip the GCL Pirates by the score of 11-4. In the 5th inning, the Bucs will turn to Reliever Dovydas Neverauskas, who will allow 2 runs in 2 1/3 IP of pitching. He becomes the 1st Lithuanian to play in the Minor Leagues.
2011-The Reds would split a doubleheader with the Yankees as Chris Heisey hits 3 HRs in the nightcap for a 10-2 win. Johnny Cueto is the winner against Yankees journeyman Starter Brian Gordon. The Yankees had won the opener by the score of 4-2, when veteran Jorge Posada making a rare start at 1st Base, hits a 2-run HR, his 1st long ball since April 23rd.
2022-The Yankees have announced that they have resigned veteran MLB Reliever Ryan Weber to a Minor League player contract. He had elected to be a Free Agent, when the Yankees had DFA him, 10 days ago. He had appeared in 1 game with the team in relief, while pitching 3 2/3 innings, allowing only 1 earned run. He hadn’t received any offers from other MLB teams. He was assigned to AAA Scranton.
