The Red Sox will send tall (6-6) rookie Cooper righty Criswell out to try to even the series at Fenway. Drafted by the Angels in the 13th round in 2018, and despite not pitching well in the minors in 2019, and spending 2020 in developmental camp, and pitching poorly at AAA in 12 starts after 4 decent starts in AA, the Angels called him up to make one bad start in 2021 and sent him right back down. He had 5 more so-so starts in AAA before the season ended. He began the 2022 injured, a "right shoulder impingement". The Angels eventually moved him to the 60-day DL. He came off the list and made 6 relief appearances in rookie ball in June and early July, and when the time came to activate, he wasn't ready to pitch in the majors and they didn't have room on the 40-man roster, so they tried to pass him through waivers and the Rays claimed him.
He made 4 starts and 4 relief appearance in AAA Durham, then was called up and made 1 start for the Rays and pitched decently for 3+ innings, but then the Rays had to activate some pitchers so they optioned him back down to AAA Durham (I'm not exactly sure why the Angels couldn't option Criswell themselves; possibly because you can't option someone from the major league IL list directly back to the minors, I think you have activate him to the 40-man first.) He made three more relief appearances in AAA to end the season. He spent 2023 being yo-yo'd between AAA and the majors, called up 6 times, sent back down 5 times. He pitched OK in Durham, a 3.93 ERA in 17 starts and 6 relief appearances, but couldn't repeat that in the majors; a 5.73 ERA in 10 relief appeances and a WHIP over 1.5 in 27 innings. The Rays non-tendered him last fall, and the Sox signed him as a free agent.
Criswell opened the season in AAA Worcester and made two good starts there, and the Sox called him up to make an emergency start April 13. They then put him in their bullpen for one appearance, and were forced to put him into the rotation full-time when ex-Yankee Garrett Whitlock went down with a major elbow injury. He did well in the next four starts, though he never got into the 6th in any of them. At that point, he was 2-1 with a 2.10 ERA; the Sox won all five of his starts. Since then, Criswell has struggled. Over his last 5 starts, he's 1-2 with an ERA of 6.45, the Sox have lost 3 of the 5 games. On the season, Criswell is 3-3 with an ERA of 4.13 in 10 starts and the one relief appearance. In 48 innings, he's allowed 47 hits, 27 runs, 21 earned, 8 HR, 11 BB and struck out 43. His WHIP this season is a solid 1.208. Criswell has never pitched against the Yankees before, not even in the 10 relief games for Tampa last season.
Repertoire: Despite his height, Criswell is a junkballing righty, and from what little tape I've seen, he has a bit of a funky motion, falling off to the 1st base side on delivery. As you'd expect from a guy whose 'fastball" averages under 90, he has other things that allow him to hold a major league job. He mixes 4 pitches, the sinker, the slider, the change and the cutter. The sinker averages just under 90, but has sharp break down. The slider has sharp break to the glove side. At his height, he has elite extension that makes his pitches play up some. The pitch mix so far this season: Sinker averaging 89 about 29% of the time, change 84-5 about 29%, slider (a sweeper, really) 77 about 28%, and a cutter 86 about 14%.

Playing the name game...There have been 23 MLB players with the last name Cooper, the best of them is Cecil Cooper, the left-hand hitting firstbaseman who plagued the Yankees with the Red Sox and Brewers in the 70's and 80's. But Criswell is of just two major leaguers with the first name Cooper, another recent name trend for boys. The other is Cooper Hummell, and outfilder/DH who has brief stays with the Diamondback and Marines in 2022 and 2023. By default, Criswell is slightly the better Cooper (-0.5 bWAR to -0.8 bWAR), plus Hummell is back at AAA this year with the Astros, and hitting well there. Cooper is also the only Criswell in MLB history.

Carlos Rodon has comeback from last year's nightmare season and a somewhat shaky start to this season with an impressive run of seven straight quality starts and seven straight wins. In those seven games his ERA is 2.28 and his WHIP is 0.85, and his K/BB ratio is 38-6. On the season, he's 9-2 with a 2.93 ERA; tied with Seth Lugo and teammate Luis Gil for the league lead in wins and 9th in ERA. He's not the same as he was in his two top 5 Cy Young seasons; his K rate is down sharply. But maybe this Rodon is more sustainable in the long term, and he might be more able to consistently make it into the 7th inning in games, and I don't think we've seen the best of him yet; he's still trying to finish turning himself from a 2-pitch starter with overwhelming stuff into a 4-pitch pitcher with excellent stuff. If he can fully coordinate his change and curve with the FB and slider, we might see some spectacular games from him. For this team, what he is now will do, but he'll have to prove it against the elite hitting teams, which he hasn't done yet. Unless they skip Poteet against the Orioles, Rodon is not lined up to face them at the Stadium next week, either.
This will be Rodon's 7th start against the Red Sox, and he's pitched farily well against them, 2-3 with a 3.34 ERA, but a high HR rate. In 35 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 16 runs, 13 earned, 8 HR, 11 BB with 44 K's. His WHIP against the Sox is 1.200 and the Sox team quadruple slash line against Rodon is .225/.291/.428/.719. His last start against them was the last of his 3 wins last year. He got through 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 earned run (a solo HR to Rafaela leading off the game for the Sox) and struck out 9 in a 4-1 Yankee win at Fenway in mid-September. It was his only start of the season vs. Boston.

Yesterday, the Yanks struck early again, getting a 2-run HR from prodigal son Alex Verdugo in the first, tacked on runs in the 4th, 5th and 9th, and Luis Gil battled through 5 grinding innings, allowing just one run for his 9th win. The bullpen threw 4 shutout innings to nail it down, and Verdugo added 2 more run-scoring hits to get to 4 RBI in his first game back in Feway, an 8-1 Yankees "blowout". The win moved the Yanks back to 28 games over .500, and made them the first team to 50 wins this year. They've now won 5 of 6, 13 of 16 and 30 of their last 39.
Also yesterday...In Baltimore, the O's came back from 1-run deficits three times, the last one in the 10th, but the Phils got a 2-run double from breakout hitter Alec Bohm in the 11th, and ex-closer Seranthony Dominguez slammed the door in the bottom of the inning, retiring the side 1-2-3 with 2 K's, and Phils finally hung on to beat the O's, 5-3. The loss was the Orioles' 2nd straight after a 6-game winning streak. Logan Allen made it through 5 innings of 1-run ball and the Guardians got just solo runs in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th, but their bullpen made it stand up with 4 scoreless innings, and they beat the Jays in Toronto, 3-1. Emmauel Clase got his 21st save, and still leads the AL in that category. The Rays got a run in the top of the first, but the Braves blitzed starter Zack Littell for 5 runs in the bottom and two more in the 2nd, knocking him out of the game, and coasted to a 7-3 win in Atlanta. Marcell Ozuna started the shellacking with a 3-run bomb in the 1st; Austin Riley ended it with a 2-run shot in the 2nd. Chris Sale threw 7 innings of 2-run ball for his 9th win.
After a rare perfect day for the Yanks (they gained on all 4 East teams), the Yanks woke up this morning leading the O's by e 1/2 games. the Sox by 14, the Jays by 15 1/2, and the Rays by 16.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Phils had a bad matchup today, pitching struggling Tijuan Walker (3-1, 5.40) against the tough lefty Grayson Rodriguez (7-2, 5.27) and eventually, the O's got 3 runs off Walker in 6 innings, but have tacked on two more on a Santander HR in the 8th, and lead 5-2, still batting.
The Jays went to a bullpen game to try to even the series against the Guardians and it worked, 6 relievers combined to shut out Cleveland 5-0. The Jays got 3 runs in the 2nd off Cleveland veteran Carlos Carrasco, and tacking on two more runs before he left after 5 innings.
Finally, the Rays sent key trade acquisition Ryan Pepiot (4-3, 4.17 ERA) out to try to even the series against the Braves and veteran Charlie Morton (3-3, 4.12 ERA), and the Braves knocked Pepiot out with 5 in the 5th, and lead 8-1 now. The Braves have HR from their big guns, Ozuna, Riley and Olson, and also Jarred Kelenic, who looks like he's finally starting to figure things out with Atlantz.
And at 7:15 or so this evening, it's Rodon vs. Criswell at Fenway.

Now comes The Saturday Leaders™ for June 18st
Among AL hitters.... Aaron Judge continues lead all of MLB with 5.1 bWAR. Juan Soto is 4th in the AL at 4.0 bWAR. Bobby Witt, Jr continues to lead in BAVG at .325, but the Guardians Steven Kwan has been white-hot since coming of the IL since the end of May, and is up to .377. He has to make up about 15 PA to regain the league lead, which he should do 7-10 games from now, if he stays healthy and doesn't go into a slump. Soto is currently 2nd at .319, and Judge is 3rd at .301, but both of them will take one step down if and when Kwan qualifies. Soto is back in front in OBA at .433, and Judge is 2nd at .427, but Kwan might move ahead of both; he's currently at .441. Judge still leads in slugging at .688; Soto is a fairly distant 2nd at .591. Oviously, Judge also leads in OPS at 1.115, and Soto is 2nd at 1.023 Judge took a day off this week, so J.J. Bleday of the A's, Gleyber Torres and Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners are now in a 3-way tie for the lead in games played with 72. Bobby Witt, Jr. still leads in runs with 59, but Soto is now just two runs behind. Judge is tied for 3rd with Gunar Henderson of the O's, 2 runs behind Soto, and Anthony Volpe is tied for 6th with Marcus Semien of the Rangers at 50 runs scored. Volpe now leads the AL in both plate appearances and at-bats with 329 and 295. Witt, Jr's still leads in hits with 93, but a hot streak by the Astros Jose Altuve has moved him into 2nd ahead of both Soto and Volpe who are 3rd and 4th with 81 and 80 hits, respectively. Judge is in a 3-way tie for 7th with Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Pena of the Astros at 77. Judge still leads in total bases with 177. Soto is 4th at 150, with Witt and Henderson between them. Judge leads in doubles with 22, 2 ahead of Jurran Duran of the Red Sox. Alex Verdugo is in a 4-way tie for 10th with 15. Duran leads in triples at 10, Volpe is tied for 2nd with Witt at 7. Soto has 3 on the year, putting him into a 9-way tie for 10th in the AL. Judge still leads in HR with 25, 4 ahead of Cunnar Henderson, Soto is tied for 5th with Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Naylor of the Guardians at 17. Judge has pulled into the lead in RBI with 63, Jose Ramirez of the Guardians is now 1 behind him after leading the AL for most of the season. Soto is 3rd at 54. Judge leads with 56 BB, but Soto is slowing gaining on him and is in 2nd, 4 behind Judge. Julios Rodriguez of the Mariners, having a very subpar season, leads in batter K's with 85, 1 ahead of teammate Cal Raleigh and the A's Brent Rooker. Stanton continues to climb the chart and is now just 3 back of the lead in 4th. Judge had fallen off the pace, but his 6 K's in a row this week moved him back into 5th, 3 behind Stanton. Jose Caballero of the Rays still leads in steals with 22, Witt, Jr. is 3 behind. Volpe is in a tie for 6th with Duran at 15. Vinnie Pasquantiino still leads with 8 sac flies; Verdugo is still 2 behind, Soto is in a 8-way tie for 4th with 4. Ryan Jeffers and Andres Gimenez are still tied with for the lead in HBP with 10 but their teammates Willi Castro and Tyler Anderson are tied as well. Judge no longer leads the world in GIDP, Bo Bichette of the Jays finally caught him and is tied for the AL lead, and the Jays Justin Turner is 1 behind. Stanton is in an 8-way tie for 6th with 8. It's harder to GIDP when you strike out so much, I suppose.

In the NL:
The Diamonbacks Ketel Marte has been hot lately, and has passed everyone for the NL lead in bWAR at 4.0 Luis Arraez of the Padres is 1st in BAVG at .329. His teammate Jurickson Profar is 2nd, 3 points back. Profar leads in OBA at .425, now 19 points ahead of Mookie Betts of the Dodgers. Marcel Ozuna of the Braves still leads in slugging at .619, and in OPS at 1.006. Betts still leads in PA at 323, Arraez leads in AB with 292 and Fernand Tatis, Jr of the Padres is now all alone with the NL lead in games played at 73 Arraez leads in hits with 96, 11 ahead of Betts and William Contreras of the Brewers. Contreras leads in runs scored with 62, 1 ahead of Bettis and 2 ahead of Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers Ohtani of the Dodgets still leads in total bases at 157, 5 ahead of Ozuna Alex Bohm of the Phillies leads in doubles with 24. Corbin Caroll of the D'backs (despite having an otherwise shockingly dreadful season) and CJ Abrams of the Nationals are still tied for the league lead in triples with 5. Ozuna leads in HR with 19, and also continues to lead in RBI with 60. Bohm is 6 RBI behind Ozuna. Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies still leads in BB with 50; Betts is 4 behind him. Elly de la Cruz of the Reds continues to be way out front with 34 steals, but not so much in K's with 92, just 4 ahead of Schwarber and de la Cruz' teammate Will Benson. Brandon Nimmo of the Mets continues to lead in HBP with 10, one ahead Brendan Donovan of the Cards. The NL lead in sac flies is still 5, but now there are NINE hitters tied at the top. Manny Machado is now in the MLB lead with 12 GIDP, but he's tied with Lourdes Gurriel of the Diamondbacks and, very suprisingly, Arraez.

Among AL pitchers:
Tyler Anderson of the Angels leads in pitcher bWAR with 3.5. Luis Gil is 7th at 3.0. Because Tarik Skubal of the Tigers and Tanner Houck of the Red Sox both had mediocre starts themselves, Gil's two OK starts have temporarily put him back in the AL lead in ERA at 2.03. But O's ace Corbin Burns has been white-hot lately, giving up just 1 run in his last 21 innings, so he's moved into 2nd at 2.08. Gil, Carlos Rodon and the Royals' Seth Lugo are now tied for the league line in wins at 9. Marcus Stroman is in a 10-way tie for 9th with 6. Yennier Cano of the Orioles has moved into a tie with Bryan Abreu of the Astros with 35 games pitched. Nestor Cortes is in a 4-way tie for the league in starts with 15, together with Garrett Crochet of the White Sox, Luis Castillo of the Mariners and Cole Ragans of the Royals. There are now 6 pitchers in the AL with 1 complete game, and three of them are shutouts. If the ties are ever broken, I'll let you know. Lugo leads in innnings pitched at 91 1/3. Cortes is 5th with 87 2/3. Garrett Crochet of the White continues to lead in K's at 116, and leads in K's per 9 innings 12.63, respectively. Gil is 4th in K's with 96, and 3rd in K's per 9 at 10.80. Because of the mediocre start, Skubal has fallen to 2nd in WHIP at 0.91. Crochet moved past him into the lead at 0.90, Gil is now 7th at 0.98, but continues to lead in hits per 9 innings at 4.39. Zac Eflin would still lead the AL in fewest walks per 9 at 0.50, and in K to BB ratio at 12.5, but he no longer has enough innings to qualify; he's 1 1/3 innings to short. Right now, George Kirby of the Mariners is back in his usual spot on top in BB/9 at 0.78 and K/BB at 11.14 After walking 4 last night, Gil has retaken the league lead with 39. Stroman is 5th at 34. Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians still leads in saves with 21; Clay Holmes is now two behind.

On the NL side: Rangere Suarez of the Phillies leads in bWAR at 3.2. Suarez also still leads in ERA at 1.77. He still leads in wins as well with 10, but Chris Sale of the Braves is still 1 behind. Suarez also leads in WHIP at 0.88, but his teammate Zack Wheeler has passed him in fewest hits/9 innings at 5.65. Suarez is 2nd at 5.94. Ryan Glasnow of the Dodgers leads with 116 K's (tied with Crochet for the MLB lead), and has retaken the lead in K's per 9 at 12.14. Logan Webb of the Giants continues to lead in games started with 15, and also leads in innings pitched at 92 1/3. Sale still leads in BB/9 at 1.43, and in K to BB ratio at 7.62. Max Fried is still the only MLB pitcher with 2 complete games this year, and he's still one of four pitchers in the NL who have thrown a shutout. Ryan Helsley of the Cards still leads in saves with 23, two ahead of Clase for the major league lead.
