The O's send elite rookie prospect lefty Cade Povich to the mound to try to even the series against the Yanks. Povich will be making his 3rd major league start since being called up from AAA to try to stop the bleeding in the Orioles rotation due to multiple serious arm injuries.Povich was drafted by the Twins in the 3rd round in 2021, and was dealt to the Orioles along with reliever Yennier Cano and two other minor leaguers in exchange for power throwing set-up reliever Jorge Lopez, yes, the same reliever who just bizarred his way off the Mets two weeks ago by throwing his glove into the stands and giving the very strange, possibly misinterpreted post-game interview in which he was quoted as saying that the team was the "worst f-ing team in MLB", but he may have been trying to say the he himself was the "worst f-ing teammate in MLB". In any event, if Povich comes through, this could be the worst trade in MLB since the Rays ripped off the Pirates for Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows and Shane Baz for Chris Archer. Lopez did almost nothing for the Twins in his 1 1/2 years with them, and the O's might come away with a good starter, a great set-up reliever and who knows what they'll make of the other two prospects.
Povich moved rapidly through the minors despite pitching poorly at high-A for the Twins in 2022 and again in AA for the Orioles that year. In spite of that, Fangraphs had him as the #8 prospect in the O's system before 2023, praising his build, his fluid motion, and his curve and slider. Last year, he again pitched poorly at AA and somewhat worse in his starts at AAA. Despite that, Fangraphs again rated him better than his statistical performance, putting him at #94 in their pre-season top 100 prospects for 2024. The Orioles must have made a significant tweak over the winter, because he looked great in spring training, and writers and prospect touts noticed.
When this season started, he opened up this season pitching great in AAA. In 11 starts, he was 5-1 with an ERA of 3.18. In 56 2/3 innings, he allowed 42 hits, 21 runs, 20 earned, 5 HR, 21 BB and struck out 75. When the O's got hit with the Means/Kremer double TJ surgery disaster, they called him up to make his MLB debut against the Jays on June 6th. Debut jitters got to him in the 3rd inning: he walked two guys before giving up a 3-run HR to a name brand in Vlad Guerrero, Jr. He allowed two more runs in the next 2 1/3 before the O's took him out, allowing 6 earned runs on 5 hits and 4 BB with just two K's. The O's, as is their habit, rallied late, but the Jays barely hung on to win, 6-5. His next start against the Braves, he turned his command right around, shutting down a still-tough Braves lineup on 5 hits and 0 BB with 6 K's in 6 shutout innings. The bullpen blew his 2-0 lead in the 7th, but (stop me if you're sensing a pattern here), the O's rallied late to win, 4-2, on what else...a two-run HR, this one by Cowser. Which Povich shows up today? Your guess is as good as mine; but one thing is certain, he's never faced the Yanks or their hitters before, except possibly in the minors.
Repertoire: It's just two MLB starts and less than 100 pitches total, but Povich is a 5-pitch lefty. Unlike many contemporary starters, he has just one fastball, the 4-seamer and just one slider, the sweeper. He also throws a curve, change and cutter. His FB has below average velocity, but above average spin, and his extension is somewhat below average. He seems to get unremarkable horizontal and vertical break on his pitches, except his cutter gets much more glove side break that average, and his sweeper somewhat less. The pitch mix through two starts: FB averaging 92, about 47% of the time, curve 75-6, about 21%, cutter 88 about 14%, change 85-6 about 12% and sweeper 82 about 6% of the time. Looking at his motion in a brief video from his last start, his breaking stuff is sharp, but not unusally so for an angle-throwing lefty. He does hide the ball well, behind his glove, then his front thigh as he kicks the leg up, his back hip and finally his head before unleashing it in a hurry, so maybe hitters pick up the ball late from him.

Verdugo missed the series in Baltimore (paternity leave), Soto missed the Dodgers series, and now Judge might potentially miss this series.

Verdugo missed the series in Baltimore (paternity leave), Soto missed the Dodgers series, and now Judge might potentially miss this series. A more valid excuse for the first two; the O's are down three members of their envisioned rotation for this season, and probably for the rest of the season.

Playing the name game...Cade is yet another very contemporary boy's name. There have been 4 in MLB history; none of them made their MLB debut before two years ago. Before Povich, the most well-known would've been Nationals pitching prospect Cade Cavalli, a hard-throwing righty who is himself a top 100 Fangraphs prospect, but whose career has been delayed by a violent delivery, resulting in both wildness and injury. Cade Smith is a 3 pitch righty reliever for the Guardians having an excellent rookie season. No MLB players have ever had the last names Cade or Povich.

Gerrit Cole is making his first start since winning his first Cy Young Award after five top five finishes in the last 8 seasons. Last year, he led the AL in ERA, WHIP, starts, innings, winning percentage and fewest hits per 9 innings. It might not be truly Cy Young-ish, but it was as close as we get to it in the modern game. Without Cole last season, there's no doubt the team's run of 30 straight winning seasons would have come to an end, and not by a little bit. It's also his first start since coming off a long IL/rehab stint with elbow inflammation and edema; he's been unavailable since late March. He's made three minor league rehab starts, slowly building pitchcount and declaring himself ready to go after the third one last Friday, but until we seem him going 6 innings regularly and topping out near 100 when he needs to, I'm going to be nervous. I'm thinking his max pitchcount is somewhere between 75 and the low 80's.
This will be Cole's 13th career start against the O's. His record is outstanding against them: 5-3 with a 2.55 ERA. In 77 2/3 innings, he's allowed 59 hits, 29 runs, 22 earned, 6 HR, and 14 BB, with 95 K's. His WHIP against the O's is a tiny 0.94, but most of that was done when the O's were awful. In 2022, he was 1-2 against them with an ERA near 4.50, one good start, one bad one, one so-so one. Last year, they hit him the first start at the Stadium, 6 hits, 3 BB and 2 HR good for 5 runs in 5 innings, but Aaron Judge got him off the hook by tying the game in the 9th on a solo HR of Yennier Cano. Volpe got the Yanks a 6-5 win with a sac fly off of closer Feliz Bautista in the 10th. He turned it around, dominating the O's for 7 innings in Camden Yards in late July, but Grayson Rodriguez matched him almost pitch for pitch, and it was 0-0 in the 9th when Anthony Santander walked it off against Tommy Kahnle with a solo HR.

Verdugo missed the series in Baltimore (paternity leave), Soto missed the Dodgers series, and now Judge might potentially miss this series. For sure it's frustrating. Let's hope Yankees are at full throttle as they approach the final countdown.

Yankees lineup vs. Povich...As you might expect, no Yankee on the roster has faced him in the majors. As I expected, no matter what Judge said last night, I doubt they'll use him the rest of this series (maybe as a PH tomorrow). He's not in the lineup tonight, and honestly, I don't expect him to play for a few days. I hope I'm wrong in this.
==============
Orioles' lineup vs. Cole...quite the opposite; most of the O's have batted against Cole, Westburg and Stowers being the exceptions. Some of them have extensive records against Cole:
Henderson is 1-5 with a solo HR Rutschman is 3-12 with a double, 1 RBI, a BB and 2 K Mountcastle is 5-22 with a double, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 5 K and 1 GIDP O'Hearn is 1-12 with a solo HR and 3 K Santander is 3-22 with a double, 2 BB, 6 K and 1 GIDP Cowser is 0-2 with 2 K Mullins is 8-25 with a double, a HR, 2 RBI and 4 K Urias is 6-13 with two doubles, a solo HR and 4 K Mateo is 2-8 with 1 RBI and 2 K
On the bench: McCann is 5-13 3 doubles, a HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB and 3 K; Hays is 5-17 with 3 doubles, 2 BB and 3 K.

Yesterday, the Yanks opened the series by topping the O's, 4-2. There were some highs: great defensive plays around the infield, and six brilliant innings from Nestor Cortes. Some lows: failing to break the game open early despite numerous chances, and another craptastic effort by closer Clay Holmes putting the 4-run lead in jeopardy right away, but hanging on to nail down the win. One very big scare: Judge leaving the game after getting hit on the hand by O's starter Albert Suarez. Some Yankees vowed vengeance, but Cole would be stupid to deliver it tonight; he's just gotten back from his injury, and with Poteet and Schmidt on the IL, and several members of the bullpen hurt/floundeing lately, the Yanks can't afford Cole to get suspended for a start for a retaliation ejection. The Yanks broke their brief 2-game losing streak and got back to 27 games over .500 at 51-24.
In other AL East action...the Red Sox rallied for two in the 8th on a solo HR from Tyler O'Neill and a go-ahead single by Ceddanne Rafaela to steal a 4-3 win from the lowly Jays. Kenley Jensen slammed the door in the 9th for his 13th save. The Rays took an early 4-0 lead, but the Twins had cut it to 5-4 before the game was interrupted by a lengthy rain delay. The Rays added one after the delay was over, but the Twins tied it in the 5th on a solo HR by Kepler and a sac fly by Jeffers, then won it in the 9th on a walkoff single by Carlos Santana, scoring Manuel Margot with the winning run.
The Yanks began play today up 2 1/2 on the O's, 11 1/2 up on the Red Sox, 15 ahead of the Jays and 16 ahead of the last-place Rays.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Sox look to finish a 3-game sweep of the Jays in Toronto at 7:07 pm. Brayan Bello (6-4 with a 5.00 ERA) looks to bounce back after his poor start vs. the Yanks last Friday, the last game the Sox have lost. Kevin Gausman (5-5, 4.08 ERA) will pitch for the Jays. The Rays, losers of 8 of their last 11, send Taj Bradley (2-4, 5.23 ERA) out to try to even the series at 7:40 pm in Minnesota. Bradley threw a great game against the awful White Sox his last start, giving up just 3 hits and 2 unearned runs while striking out 11 in 7 innings for a win; the Twins are a major step up in difficulty. Joe Ryan counters for Minnesota; he's 5-5 on the season with a 3.24 ERA and his pitched 4 excellent games in his last 5 starts.
And at 7:08 or so this evening, it's Povich vs. Cole at the Stadium.
And now, pre-game pseudo-punditry done, I take a break to do some chores and make a small dinner for myself.

As reported, service outage is reported in my area, surprisingly I seem to have intermittent service as some are completely off line. Hopefully I can stream Prime when the game starts.

I know Judge got hit on the hand yesterday but I don’t know how bad he is hurt. No fracture is good news. However if he can’t grip a bat what does that mean and for how long. It all seems weird to me. I don't know why he can't play...

Would be nice if we could have our best players available for these big series.

Well, the Prime webcast keeps freezing, so I'm stuck with the O's cast.
Henderson leads off... game underway Cole misses well outside with a cutter FB outside, 2-0 Cutter on the middle at 91, I'm 3 pitches behind already, grounder to the right side, Torres dives and deflects down the line into the corner for a leadoff double.
