The O's send lefty Cole Irvin out to try to keep the Yanks from winning a series against an AL East team. So far, the Yanks are 10-11 vs. the other teams in the division, and 41-14 against all other teams. Irvin was drafted by major league team in 2012 out of high school, again as a junior in college in 2015, and finally by the Phillies in the 5th round in 2016. He moved rapidly through the Phillies system from low A to AAA, having an outstanding season at Lehigh Valley in 2018: 14-4 with a 2.57 ERA. He made 6 solid starts there at the beginning of 2019, so the Phils called him up and put him in the rotation. After one good and one so-so start, he got hammered by the Cubs and the Phils sent him down. It was one of four round trips from AAA to the majors Irvin took that year. He would start games in the minors, but in the last three times he was with the Philles, they put him in long/middle relief. He did poorly in thar role, pitching to a 6.00 ERA and a 1.500 WHIP in 24 innings over 13 games. He spent the first half of 2020 at developmental camp, but the Phils used him in 3 games of relief during their shortened season, and again, Irvin floudered in the role.
That offseason, the Phils basically sold Irvin to the A's, probably to clear 40-man roster space. He spent 2021 and 2022 in the A's rotation, and was essentially a competent #4 starter for a weak team, but in a great pitcher's park. Over the two seasons, Irvin was 19-28 with an ERA of 4.11 with a high H/9 innings rate and very low K/9 innings rate (He was top 5 in most hits per 9 and lowest K's per 9 over the two seasons among 38 ERA-title qualified starters in the American League). In January, 2023 the O's traded minor league shortstop prospect Darrell Hernaiz to the A's for Irvin and a pitching prospect, Kyle Virbitsky. Last year, the O's bounced him back and forth from AAA Norfolk to the majors 3 more times. He was so-so in 9 starts in AAA and in 12 starts and 12 more relief appearances in the majors. With the O's, he was 1-4 with a 4.86 ERA in the rotation, and 0-0 with a 3.26 ERA in middle/long relief.
This year, because of an injured starter or two, he opened in the O's rotation and did well. His first 7 starts, he was 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA. The starters came back and he was put back in the bullpen, but after the Means/Kramer double TJ surgery disaster, the O's put him back into the rotation, and he's been good again: 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA his last 4 starts. On the season, he's, 6-3 (he lost the game in one of his two long relief appearances) with a 3.03 ERA. In 11 starts and 2 relief games, he's pitched 68 1/3 innings, allowed 71 hits, 27 runs, 23 earned, but just 6 HR and 13 BB. He's struck out 51, improving his K rate slightly, but it's still quite low for the contemporary game, under 7 K per 9 innings. In his last start against a very good Braves lineup, he gave up 9 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) but struck out 8, and got the L in a 6-3 Braves win.
This is his 3rd start and 4th games vs. the Yanks, and he hasn't done well, albeit in a low number of innings: 0-2 with an ERA of 8.31. In 13 innings, he's allowed 15 hits, 12 runs, all earned, 3 HR, walked 6 and struck out 11. His WHIP against them is 1.615, and their quadruple slash line agains thim is .294/.362/.549/.911. It's bad luck when your opposition OPS is an emergency (911). He pitched against the Yanks twice, last year, giving up 3 runs, 5 hits and 4 BB in 4 2/3 inning is a loss at the Stadium in April, and giving up 4 runs and 5 hits in 1 1/3 innings in another loss at the Stadium in late July.
Repertoire: Irvin is a kitchen sink lefty. He has a FB and a sinker, a cutter, change. slider and curve. His curve has elite drop and horizontal break, his FB has exceptional run. His cutter has considerably more side break than most. Working against this is that his FB has well below average velocity and spin, so does the curve. His extension is mediocre. His does mix his pitches well. The pitch mix so far this year: FB averaging 92 about 32%, curve 77-8 about 25%, sinker 92 about 16%, change 84 about 12%, cutter 86 about 10%, and slider 78 about 5%.

Playing the name game...We've hit the first name Cole before...the have been 14 players with first name Cole, none before 1999, the best might be KC starting pitcher Cole Ragans. Several with last name Cole, the best being the Yankees Gerrit Cole. There have been 4 major leaguers with last name Irvin, the best being Monte Irvin, the former Negro League and Hall of Fame outfielder for the Giants, who was Willie Mays' running mate during the early 1950's.

Everyone knows what's been happening with Yankees starter Luis Gil; despite having to battle his last two starts, he's still having an extraordinary start to his season: 9-1, 2nd in the league in wins, leads the AL in ERA at 2:03, and among the league leaders in hits per 9 innings, WHIP, K's, K's per 9 innings, and, unfortunately, BB and BB per 9 innings.
He's making his 2nd start against the O's this season. In the first one, he got the only win the Yanks took in the 4-game series at Camden Yards seven weeks ago, pitching 6 1/3 innings of 2-hit, scorelees baseball, walking just one and striking out five. In his career, he's 2-0 vs. the O's with 12 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just 6 hits and 2 BB while striking out 11. Their quadruple slash line against him is .140/.178/.140/.317, and his WHIP in limited innings is a microscopic 0.649.

Yesterday, the O's outlasted the Yanks 7-6 in 10 innings. Cole made his first start and looked good, but the bullpen was bad. Stanton was the hitting hero with a huge 3 run HR, and a game tying single. Series is now even at 1-1 and the Yanks are back to 26 over .500 at 51-25
In other AL East action...the Sox completed a sweep of the Jays 7-3 and the Rays topped the Twins in 10 innings 3-2.
The Yanks began play today up 1 1/2 on the O's, 10 1/2 up on the Red Sox, 15 ahead of the Jays and Rays, now tied for 4th-5th.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: the Rays lead the Twins 6-3, bottom 9 in Minnesota, but the Twins have the tying run at the plate with nobody out; the Red Sox and Jays have the day off.
And at 4:08 pm, it's Irvin vs. Gil at the Stadium.
Sorry about the abbreviated recaps from last night and preview today. I had errands to run and got started late on the pre-game stuff, and had to rush to get it in on time at all.

Aside from Judge being back in the lineup, to add a fresh lefty arm in the pen, the Yanks demoted Misiewicz and brought veteran lefty Tim Hill to the major league roster. He was having a terrible year for the White Sox who released him yesterday. The Yanks signed and put him right on the roster. Whehter Blake can turn his career around, I eon't know. Whether he stays on the roster beyond today...I don't know that, either. He was a decent lefty reliever in both 2021 and 2022. He doesn't throw hard, fastball averages 91.
