I could well be proven wrong, but I still think this team is better than what the Yankees put out there in 2022. (BTW at this point that team was five games better than this one at 56-20.) There have been significant upgrades in the OF, with Hicks and Gallo replaced by Soto and Verdugo. Likewise at SS, with IKF replaced by Volpe. Judge, Gleyber, Trevino and Stanton (who remember did hit 31 HRs that year) are the same. We had a better version of Rizzo (he did hit 32 HRs, although his BA was only .224 and his OBP .338) although it remains to be seen how Rice will do. Third base has been a problem, although it was manned by Josh Donaldson in 2022, and I don't remember many fans talking about what a great job he was doing. If Berti is back for the stretch run, to me he's still an upgrade. DJLM as a utility guy was better than he is now, but there is still time for him to get closer to what he was (although I'm not counting on it.) The six principal starting pitchers were Cole, Nestor, Taillon, Montgomery, Severino and German. Today they are Cole, Nestor, Rodon, Gil, Stroman and Schmidt. Then as now Holmes was the closer. The other relievers with at least 40 appearances were Luetge, Peralta, Marinaccio, Loaisiga and Chapman. The last two had ERAs over 4.00 that year. At least as of now I would definitely take the current starters as a group over the 2022 group. Maybe that bullpen was better, but that can change quickly as the year unfolds. The Yanks have plenty of holes to address, and I do think that top to bottom Baltimore puts out a more balanced lineup, but their starting pitching has been decimated by injuries to guys like Means and Bradish who aren't coming back (and Kremer, who will be) not to mention losing their closer Bautista for the year and key setup guy Danny Coloumbe is out long term as well. So that could bite them as the year goes along. Baltimore is a significant obstacle obviously and they should be a pain for a long time. Although last year they won 101 games and were swept by the Rangers in the ALDS. But they are a more solid team than last year as well. At least for where things stand now, I still think this Yankee team is better than the 2022 version. That obviously could change depending on injuries. Oh, it’s certainly a better team, but right now is just a dangerous time and they need to prove they can overcome it. And Cashman needs to find some upgrades that may be bigger than incremental. So the fight becomes one with the budget and the master of the budget, Mr. Hal… One of the problems with the expanded playoffs, in addition to diminishing the importance of the regular season, is that very few teams are genuinely out of the hunt at the trade deadline and are therefore less likely to deal away significant players. A lot can change between now and July 31, but right now in the AL only three teams are more than six games out of the last playoff spot -- the Athletics, the Angels and the White Sox. In the NL there are only two teams -- the Marlins and the Rockies. That isn't to say nominally contending teams won't make trades, but it does limit the possibilities.

That’s the feel I’ve been getting. Once you’ve see it, you recognize it the second time. It 2022 we thought it was “impossible”, but know we know better… I could well be proven wrong, but I still think this team is better than what the Yankees put out there in 2022. That obviously could change depending on injuries. agree with this. been making the same comparison as well. much better team than 2022 for the reasons you mentioned.
and yeah recently the injury bug has been biting. injuries can and will be always be a factor. the bullpen which had been overachieving has sprung several leaks and is gil's run over. there are certainly holes at 1B & 3B and maybe 2B & C which need addressing. but every team has issues otherwise we wouldn't still after this 2-5 slide, be tied for the best record in baseball and 4.5 games ahead of the almighty dodgers. the other team's grass is always greener ...
clearly cashman needs to make some moves but nothing's happening until the TDL so until then have to sit tight and hope some players step up. for now my window is staying open ...

I was busy and missed the game. Did I miss anything? Nothing you’d want to see. Well, maybe that’s not true Matt. You do enjoy the horror genre… and it was that…

Worthless, except that she’s referring me for medication. The pot has been working, but I’d rather take something I can get prescribed… Gummies? Just had a flashback of an SNL skit when Pete Davidson and Adei Bryant played and sang about being weed gummies.

Just had a flashback of an SNL skit when Pete Davidson and Adei Bryant played and sang about being weed gummies. I missed Rizzuto’s question. Yes. Gummies, although they look awfully sugary so I may get pills when I go back for my next dose. I’m getting referred now for medicinal evaluation, but I have no idea how long that’s supposed to take. I might wind up living better through chemistry in the long run… But for the short run I need to go to the bank and get some cash out so I can go see my “dealer”. Only about 6 miles up the road. Alamosa County is one of the counties that has opted out of MJ, and the county line is 6 miles away, and there is a dispensary right there. Kind of makes it nice. The town doesn’t smell like pot like parts of Pueblo did, but you can still get it nearby. rizzuto

This is the mess Cashman created. Besides Soto and Dugie he brought back the same a collection of injured players on the decline hoping to strike lightening in the bottle. Cashman didn't create injuries. Those players you mention have been a big part of the Yankees success this season. For the most part Verdugo is hitting in the middle of the Yankees lineup, and Soto is one of the best players in MLB.
Unfortunately there aren't any buyouts in MLB, but there is a Luxury Tax. So the Yankees can't just bench high salary players like DJ and Rizzo. Those 2 players also happen to be 2 good MLB proven players, so there's always a chance they might start hitting.
Keeping things in perspective...What Cashman created is a team that's tied for the best record in MLB.

George fired people during the season many times and the Yankees only won the championship only 1 time (1978) when George changed managers. In my opinion, that 1978 team was so good they would have won if Martin remained as Yankee manager just like they did the year before.

I never wanted Cashman back. I would've loved to see Mattingly get a shot to win a Championship as Yankee manager but as for Boone he manages the team he is dealt. I wish he wasn't as much of a player's best friend manager but I not calling for him to go. Everyone in the world knew Soto was going to the Yankees. I would've been an automatic death wish for Cashman if he didn't make the deal. I love Dugie and glad we got him but Cash didn't break the bank to improve LF he traded for a guy on the last year of his contract. Not sure how the others would've fared but there were many top plan A starters. He didn't pull the trigger and got plan B average Stroman. Instead of getting solid pen help he is waiting for his injured trade garbage to pan out and trying to hit lightning in a bottle. None of knew Gleyber would crap the bed in a walk year. Wells has not worked out so far. We knew Rizzo and DJ are injured with diminishing skills. And the #1 logjam in MLB the HR slugging not good at anything else DH. The Yankees still can figure it out but right now in the East the Os are young hungry and better.

Yanks have contractual obligations with DJ, Rizzo & Stanton, but I would love to hear your suggestions as to what Cashman "should've" done re that. Please be specific...name names.

In some regards, Cash is between a rock and hard place. He bet that Rizzo and DJL would be better this year and they haven't been. They both play positions that typically generate offense. I think that if the Yankees are going to continue to both be aggressive with longer term contracts to aging players they will also have to develop a mindset that allows them to eat them and walk away when it's not working out, similarly to what was done with Hicks. It's not a fair defense of Cashman to say his hands are tied because of bad contracts when it is he who gave them out. This season is far from over so it's too soon to evaluate Cashman's offseason moves in there entirety. Is it reasonable to have some concerns with the roster the way it is constructed, absolutely. No production from the corner infielders, an underperforming 2B, a BP that looks like it needs to improve to get to marginal, some starters maybe hitting the wall? It will be interesting to see how Cash addresses needs. If he keeps betting on some aging veterans and inhouse candidates to find it or is aggressive at the trade deadline. He hs some tough decisions to make.

He hs some tough decisions to make. Understood...and agree that Cashman can't say he isn't responsible for the current situation, for the reasons you cited. But that's water under the bridge...it's a moot point. Unless a realistic solution is offered, it's pointless to complain about him not "doing something" re DJ, Rizzo and Stanton when the Yanks are contractually obligated to all three. I think most fans & Cashman expected DJ & Rizzo to perform much better than they have to this point. I know I did, and one or both may eventually live up to those expectations. As for Stanton...I've never been a fan, to put it mildly. But frankly, I find relentlessly trashing him to be over-the-top ridiculous, especially since he's been one of the offensive bright spots... YTD - .243 / .301 / .490 / .791 / 18 HR / 45 RBI June - .297 / .375 / .547 / .922 / 5 HR / 16 RBI Everyone knows he "can't do anything else", like many DHs before him. His job is to hit & drive in runs, which he's done.

Like all DHs...his job is to hit & drive in runs, like many other DHs who "can't do anything else" well. DJ looks like a shell of his former self, I don't expect him to turn it around this season but I could be and hope I am wrong. Rizzo just doesn't seem to be healthy enough even before the latest injury. I suspect like others have said he is dealing with back issues. I'm not a Stanton fan, not a hater either, but I have also come to his defense this year. What scares me though is I keep seeing a meaningful playoff game with him batting, a runner on 3rd base with 1 out and watching him swing and miss on 3 sliders a foot off the plate.
