I never wanted Cashman back. I would've loved to see Mattingly get a shot to win a Championship as Yankee manager but as for Boone he manages the team he is dealt. I wish he wasn't as much of a player's best friend manager but I not calling for him to go. Everyone in the world knew Soto was going to the Yankees. I would've been an automatic death wish for Cashman if he didn't make the deal. I love Dugie and glad we got him but Cash didn't break the bank to improve LF he traded for a guy on the last year of his contract. Not sure how the others would've fared but there were many top plan A starters. He didn't pull the trigger and got plan B average Stroman. Instead of getting solid pen help he is waiting for his injured trade garbage to pan out and trying to hit lightning in a bottle. None of knew Gleyber would crap the bed in a walk year. Wells has not worked out so far. We knew Rizzo and DJ are injured with diminishing skills. And the #1 logjam in MLB the HR slugging not good at anything else DH. The Yankees still can figure it out but right now in the East the Os are young hungry and better. In my opinion, Girardi was a good manager and if it was up to me he would still be managing the Yankees. But that's all in the past. Mattingly is my favorite Yankee, but there's no guarantee that he would be better at managing the Yankees than Boone.
It takes 2 to tango. Cashman tried to sign top starters (Snell, Yamamoto). Both signed with other teams and both are presently on the IL. The Orioles traded a top prospect for Burnes who by the way like Verdugo is in the last year of his contract.
Not sure where else the solid bullpen help you speak of would come from. I wanted the Yankees to sign Hader, but that was before I knew that signing him would have cost the Yankees draft picks, and international bonus money at a time when the Yankees are linked to top international prospects.
Soto might have been favored to be traded to the Yankees, but Cashman still had to make the trade. Rizzo and DJ aren't in their primes anymore, but as mentioned before they are under contract. Also, who would replace those players and at what cost?

DJ looks like a shell of his former self, I don't expect him to turn it around this season but I could be and hope I am wrong. Rizzo just doesn't seem to be healthy enough even before the latest injury. I suspect like others have said he is dealing with back issues. I'm not a Stanton fan, not a hater either, but I have also come to his defense this year. What scares me though is I keep seeing a meaningful playoff game with him batting, a runner on 3rd base with 1 out and watching him swing and miss on 3 sliders a foot off the plate. Yeah...but that shouldn't come as a surprise. I wouldn't be surprised to see him steadily improve, but it's unrealistic to expect him to get back to the level he was at just a few years ago. IMO he's another example of being signed to a longer term contract than made sense. 6 years @ $15M per could've easily been 4 @ $22.5M per, or even a little less annually...maybe $20M. I think at his age and point in his career "working" 4 years for $80M rather than 6 years for $90M might've been attractive to him. But, of course, it was done to avoid the luxury tax.

In some regards, Cash is between a rock and hard place. He bet that Rizzo and DJL would be better this year and they haven't been. They both play positions that typically generate offense. I think that if the Yankees are going to continue to both be aggressive with longer term contracts to aging players they will also have to develop a mindset that allows them to eat them and walk away when it's not working out, similarly to what was done with Hicks. It's not a fair defense of Cashman to say his hands are tied because of bad contracts when it is he who gave them out. This season is far from over so it's too soon to evaluate Cashman's offseason moves in there entirety. Is it reasonable to have some concerns with the roster the way it is constructed, absolutely. No production from the corner infielders, an underperforming 2B, a BP that looks like it needs to improve to get to marginal, some starters maybe hitting the wall? It will be interesting to see how Cash addresses needs. If he keeps betting on some aging veterans and inhouse candidates to find it or is aggressive at the trade deadline. He hs some tough decisions to make. Understood...and agree that Cashman can't say he isn't responsible for the current situation, for the reasons you cited. But that's water under the bridge...it's a moot point. Unless a realistic solution is offered, it's pointless to complain about him not "doing something" re DJ, Rizzo and Stanton when the Yanks are contractually obligated to all three. I think most fans & Cashman expected DJ & Rizzo to perform much better than they have to this point. I know I did, and one or both may eventually live up to those expectations. As for Stanton...I've never been a fan, to put it mildly. But frankly, I find relentlessly trashing him to be over-the-top ridiculous, especially since he's been one of the offensive bright spots... YTD - .243 / .301 / .490 / .791 / 18 HR / 45 RBI June - .297 / .375 / .547 / .922 / 5 HR / 16 RBI Everyone knows he "can't do anything else", like many DHs before him. His job is to hit & drive in runs, which he's done. yeah your hands are pretty much tied when you're committed to $64 mil in contracts this season for these 3 players. and we still have 2 more years on DJ and 3 more on stanton.
as for stanton, doubt anyone "likes" him but he is having a "bounceback" season. as you said he's doing his "job" which is the best anyone could have hoped for. better hope he can maintain something near that level for the rest of the contract. interestingly during the telecasts this week, girardi has been singing his praises.

The very same "fans" who've trashed other Yankee managers wouldn't hesitate to do the same with Yankee icon Mattingly if things got a little tough. I'd rather not witness that.

A little hard for me to grasp that he left the game almost 30 years ago. I'm afraid some of the younger fans may not have the same respect and reverence for him as those in our age group, which could lead to the same type of stuff that was hurled at Torre, Girardi and now Boone. As I said...I'd rather not see that.

Max solid bullpen hep is hard to find yes. The problem is Cashman made trades for injured duds. He also got very lucky finding a few gems. Now people think is is a bullpen whisperer taking average arms and turning them into elite arms. SO now the entire pen consisits of guys you don't know what you are going to get night in and night out.

There are a bunch of players that I'd like the Yankees to trade for or sign. But realistically wanting the Yankees to acquire certain players is sometimes it's easier said than done. There's a Luxury Tax, so the Yankees are going to look to save money at certain positions, like middle relief.

One thing that could help would be doing a better job of drafting and developing players, particularly pitchers. Very few pitchers on our roster were drafted and developed inhouse.

Hello everyone! I'm back after spending the week in NYC with my family. So, my first visit to the new Yankee Stadium and my son & I get the worst pitched game of the season. What's the odds? Still, it was great to finally get to the Stadium, but the team is spinning right now. I hope Gil is OK and this wasn't a sign of things and of course, the bullpen is a disaster right now. Nice to see Cashman get Gomez with the team where he belongs, although they'll probably send him back down after throwing so many pitches last night.

The other side of the coin is that their prospects enabled the Yankees to trade for players like Holmes, Verdugo, and Soto.

It's usually not this hot at this time in June in NYC, I think the average temperature is usually around 80. I hope you enjoyed your visit to NYC better than that game. Hey, at least you got to see Judge hit a HR. I'd like to see the Yankees keep Gomez in the bullpen, at least for the rest of this season.
