I wish the Braves would give Marcell a day off, because they will eventually have to give him a day off Ozuna or later.

Hope it just a day off for Verdugo. Probably with a tough lefty on the mound.

The Yanks DFA'd Victor Gonzales before todays game. Added Phil Bickford and Yoendrys Gomez to the 26 man roster. Sounds like desperation to me. But Bickford's has a good season or two and Gomez is a fresh arm.

The Braves had a rough go of it for a while after the season-ending knee injury to Ronald Acuna, Jr., but have straightened themselves out in the last week, coming into the series having won 6 games out of 7 by a combined score of 37-18. They arrive at the Stadium this weekend 10 games over .500 at 41-31 and 7 games behind the first place Phillies in the NL East. Aside from Acuna, the Braves lost the most dominant starter in baseball, Spencer Strider, to Tommy John surgery back in April, and two of their best starting prospects, AJ Smith-Shawyer and Hurston Waldrep, came up, were put into the rotation, and got injured and are on the IL as well. So is Michael Harris, Rookie of the Year in 2022. He's such a terrific defensive center fielder that the Braves moved Acuna to right to make room for him. The Braves are so-well constructed, they're still a very formidable team despite losing an MVP-level OF, an all-star caliber CF and a Cy Young-level starter. No complaining about the Yankees injuries this series, the Braves have been hit hard by their own.

Tonight the Braves go with Chris Sale, traded to Atlanta over the winter and to this point having a brilliant comeback season, his first really good season since 2018. Drafted by the White Sox with the 13th pick in the 1st round in 2010, he came to the majors as a reliever after just 10 relief games at high-A and AAA. He pitched very well in relief for the rest of 2010 and 2011, and, after completing this apprenticeship, they put him into the rotation for 2012. He was a legitimat e dominating ace for the White Sox from 2012-2016, making the All-Star all five seasons, finishing in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting all five. He had one year left of team control during the off-season of 2016-2017, so the White Sox traded him to the Red Sox for uber infield prospect Yoan Moncaga, uber pitching prospect Michael Kopech, and two other prospects.
In 2017, he had a brilliant year for the Red Sox. finishing 2nd in the Cy Young Voting, and drawing downballot MVP votes for the 4th straight season. In 2018, he was crusing along to an even better season. By the end of July, he was 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA, when his season was interrupted by the first of many injuries: "left shoulder inflammation". He sat out a couple of weaks, came back, made one great 5-innings start, throwing 5 hitless, scoreless innings, and striking out 12, but had to be shut down again. This time he sat out a month, and the Sox brought him back as slowly as they could, building him up to 5 innings over 4 starts in September. He was able to pitch in the post-season, but he pitched very poorly. Didn't matter; the 2018 Sox were a juggernaut, going 11-3 in the playoffs to win the title.
From that point on, almost nothing went right over the next 5 seasons with Boston. He was 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 2019, the elbow pain he pitched through turning into a torn UCL and Tommy John surgery, forcing him to miss the entire COVID-shortened 2020 season. He was injured for most of 2021 and 2022 as well, pitching well, but he made just 11 starts in the two seasons combined. Last year, he managed to pitch most of the season, but it didn't go very well: 6-5 with a 4.30 ERA. He did strike out 125 in 103 2/3 innings, so with one year (plus a conditional option year) left on his contract, the Braves gambled, and sent promising young infielder Vaughn Grisson to the Sox in exchange for Sale at the end of December. So far, it's worked out much better for the Braves. Grissom got hurt in spring training, did a month in AAA getting ready to come up, but when was promoted, he hit very poorly in 20 games for Boston, and had to go back on the IL in early June with a strained hamstring; he's still on the IL.

Sale meanwhile, has been healthy, and nothing less than brilliant again. In 13 starts, he's 9-2 with a 2.98 ERA. In 81 2/3 innings, he's allowed 64 hits, 27 runs, all earned, just 6 HR, just 13 walks and has struck out 99. Among the NL leaders, he's 2nd in wins, 4th in winning perceentage, 8th in ERA, 3rd in WHIP, 7th in fewest hits per 9 innings, 2nd in fewest walks per 9, 5th in lowest HR per 9, 5th in K's, 6th in K's per 9 innings, and currently leads the NL in K/BB ratio. It's almost impossible for a starter to do more things well than Sale is doing right now.
Yankees fans know Sale all too well; he dominated them game after game for years, although he had trouble getting the W in those games. From 2012 through 2018, in 14 starts, he was just 6-4 against them, but with an ERA of 1.66 and a WHIP of 0.94 in 90 1/3 innings, and a 125-18 K-BB ratio. They hit him hard in the injury riddled 2019 season in 4 starts and he was an early injury knockout in one start in 2022, bringing his career line against the Yanks to 22 games, 19 starts, 6-9 record, 3.12 ERA. In 121 1/3 innings, he's allowed just 100 hits, 50 runs, 42 earned, 15 HR, 25 BB and struck out 157. His career WHIP against them is 1.030 and the team's quadruple slash line against him is .217/.270/.362/.631. The last time he faced them was that abortive start in mid-July 2022 after missing the first half with yet another injury. He had gone 5 scoreless innings against the Rays his first start that year, but had to leave the start against the Yanks having thrown just 2/3 of an inning and having given up 2 hits, hitting a batter and 3 runs, one uneared. He didn't pitch again that season.
Repertoire: A tall, skinny 6-5, 180 lefty, Sale has thrown the same 4 pitches since he began starting in 2012. Considering his dominating success, why would he change anything? He has fastball, sinker, slider and change. He has excellent command and gets plus movement on all of them, and elite drop of the Sinker and slider and elite "rise" on the 4-seamer. His 4-seam also has elite "run" as well. The velocity and spin on his FB and curve have descended from elite to near-average over the years, and he gets average extension, despite his height. So far this season, he's using the 4-seamer somewhat less and the sinker and slider a bit more. The current pitch mix: he's using the 78-9 mph slider the most, 41%. Next is the 4-seamer, averaging 95 (he hasn't lost much, if any velocity; he was averaging 95 in 2015-6-7 as well) 38% of the time. The 3rd pitch is the 87 changeup, about 13% of the time, and he throws the 94 sinker about 8% of the time.

Carlos Rodon goes for the Yanks. He's hoping to bounce back from his poor start in Fenway Parklast Saturday, when showed up with zero command of his FB or his slider, and the Red Sox slapped him all over the field for 5 runs in the first two innings. He stayed in there and got through 5 innings, allowing no further damage, but the Yanks were buried for the evening, losing 8-4. That bad start put an end to a 7-game winning streak of 7 quality starts for Rodon.
On the season, Rodon is 9-3 with a 3.28 ERA. In 15 starts, he's thrown 85 innings, allowed 71 hits, 32 runs, 31 earned, 11 HR, 23 BB and struck out 81. His K rate is still way down from his two top 5 Cy Young seasons in 2021 and 2022. His WHIP for the season is a very solid 1.106, despite being hit hard in Fenway.

Yankees lineup vs. Sale: Most of the guys he dominated from 2012 through 2018 are gone, but there are 6 Yankees who've faced Sale before, but because of benching and injuries, the lineup tonight looks very weak against him...
Volpe has never faced him. Soto is 1-5, the 1 hit is a solo HR, but the 4 outs are all K's Judge is 5-25 with 1 double, 1 solo HR, 3 BB and 15 K's (!!!). He's also been hit 3 times and grounded into 1 double play. Stanton is 2-6 with 3 K Verdugo is sitting against the lefty Sale. He'd never faced him before. Jahmai Jones starting in his place is 0-2 with 2 K's against Sale LeMahieu is 7-10 (!) against Sale with 2 doubles (!!) and 3 HR(!!!), but all of that would have been during Sale's bad years, especially 2019, 7 RBI, and 3 K. Sale is healthy now, and DJ is older now, so I don't expect that to continue. Trevino has never faced Sale Rice has to play because of Torres groin injury, he's a lefty and has never faced Sale, so that's not very promising Cabrera has never faced him.
On the bench...even if Torres is available, he's 0-15 vs. Sale with an RBI and 7 K
==============
Braves' lineup vs. Rodon:
Kelenic has never faced him Albies han't either, not even in 2022 when Rodon was with the Giants Ozuna is 1-10 with 1 BB and 4 K Olson is 3-8 with 1 double and 1 RBI Riley is 0-2 with 2 K Murphy is 1-5 with 1 RBI, 1 BB and 2 K Duvall is 0-6 with 5 K Laureanco is 0-2 with 1 K Arcia is 1-4 with a K
On the bench: Anderson is 0-2 with a K, Short is 0-2 with 2 K

Yesterday, the O's annihilated the Yanks, demolishing starter Luis Gil for 8 runs in 1 1/3 innings, on their way to piling up 19 hits, 10 for extra bases, in 17-5 rout at the Stadium, winning the series for the O's, who still haven't lost a series to an East team this year. The O's have now won 10 of 13 and 20 of 27, the Yanks have all of a sudden lost 5 of 7.
In other AL East action...the Rays blew a 6-2 lead in the 9th, but got ghost runner Taylor Walls home on a single by Johnny DeLuca, and Rays closer Fairbanks got big help when center fielder Jose Siri threw out ghost runner Royce Lewis at 3rd attempting to tag on a fly to deep center. After allowing a single to the next batter that might have tied the game, Fairbanks got Carlos Santana to fly out to deep center to end it as a 7-6 Rays win. The Jays and Red Sox had yesterday off.
The Yanks began play today up just 1/2 game up on the O's, 10 up on the Red Sox, 14 up on the Rays, and 14 1/2 up on the Jays. The Yanks time in 1st place this year seems likely to come to an end this weekend, possibly tonight.
Elsewhere in the AL East today: the Rays go to Pittsburgh to start a 3-game series with the Pirates at 6:40 pm. Ryan Pepiot (4-4, 4.57 ERA) starts for Tampa, and the Pirates will try an opener, reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (1-2, 4.42 ERA). The suddenly hot Red Sox, winners of 5 in a row and 7 of 8, travel to the Great American Launching Pad to take on the Reds for 3 games, starting at 7:10 pm. Kutter Crawford (3-6, 3.54 ERA) goes for Boston, lefty Andrew Abbott (5-6, 3.42 ERA) throws for Cincinnati. The Blue Jays cross Lake Erie to start a 3-game series in Cleveland at 7:10 pm. The Jays have recalled well-regarded prospect Yariel Rodriguez to make his first start for them in two months (he had make 6 starts in AAA rehabbing an injury). In 4 starts, Rodriguez is 0-1 with an ERA of 4.11. Veteran Carlos Carrasco, having a miserable time in his age-37 season (2-6, 5.80 ERA) goes for the Guardians. The O's travel to Houston to take on the Astros over the weeked. The O's send big lefty Grayson Rodiguez (8-2, 3.20 ERA) to the hill. The Astros will counter by calling up well-regarded prospect Jake Bloss for his debut against the very tough O's lineup. Bloss has pitched very well in 12 starts in high A and AA this year, and Fangraphs has him as the #2 prospect in the Astros organization, and #99 in their top 100. Bloss sits 94-6, has a good slider and curve, but his command is suspect. Looks like easy meat for the O's, but we'll see.
And at 7:08 pm on Prime Delayed Video (ugh), it's Sale vs. Rodon at the Stadium.
