Have to credit Arcia for a good play to get Volpe at third. I think the Yankees should have challenged that the third baseman was in the baseline, as Volpe's back foot contacted the fielder on the slide before the tag was made. Or you just stay at second, already in scoring position with Judge coming up. He was out by several feet. don't recall girardi's comment but the play was right in front of volpe. no way should he have run.

Grisham... Slider on the outside corner thigh high, 0-1 FB misses up and away at 96. Flies open, misses again with the FB up and away, 2-1 A walk would be great here, Trent. Slider in the zone down and in, taken, 2-2 Can't take strike 3 here.

Almost the same slider down and in, and he's on it, but way early, pulls it hard but way foul And is completely surprised by the rare change that winds up right down the middle, taken for the ꓘ, 1 down.

And, Volpe was not standing on second base, he had taken a lead and the ball was hit behind him between Volpe and second base. When the ball is hit there, you are taught to take the base. Arcia made a heads-up play.

Volpe takes a slider low/away, 1-0 Fouls off a knee high slide just outside middle 1-1 Slider backs up inside, Volpe checks in time, 2-1 Buzzes the tower with a FB way up and in, knocking him down, 3-1 Don't chase the slider here, Anthony. Beats him clean with a FB on the high inside corner. At least it was in the zone, 3-2 Slider away has Volpe a bit off balance, his fliner to medium deep right center is an easy play for Kelenic, 2 down. Jimenez accomplishes his main goal: get to Soto with no one on base.

Takes a slider on the outer 3rd, waist high, 0-1 Chases a FB rising high outer half, almost falls down on the hard swing, loses the bat out of his hands, 0-2 Change misses just low/away, 1-2 Soto tries to call time, but the ump doesn't give it to him, and the FB winds up in a hittable spot above and inside middle for the ꓘ.
Top 9, 3-1 Braves.
Riley, Murphy and Duvall for the Braves in the 9th.

Almost forgot... Out West, the Dodgers won 5 of 7 this week to climb to 48-31, and have a very comfortable lead in the division. The Padres have won 4 in a row after losing 5 in a row, and are back at 1 game over .500 at the midway point. They trail LA by 8 games. The Diamondbacks may have gotten clobbered by the Phils yesterday, but went 4-2 this week, and have now won 8 of 12. They're back within a game of .500, are a game behind the Padres, and 9 out of 1st. The Giants have lost 4 in a row to fall back into 4th, 5 games under .500. SF is now 2 back of Arizona, 3 back of SD and 11 back of LA. The Rockies lost 5 of 7 this week, and are now neck and neck with the Marlins for the worst record in the NL, just 1/2 game ahead. At 23 under .500, they're 9 behind the Giants, 11 behind the D'backs, 12 behind the Pads, and 20 games out of 1st.
And that concludes The Sunday Standings™ for this week.

It's whether he blocks the base without the ball, not if he blocks it before the tag. I think he's out no matter what. Pierce Johnson in for the Braves. Torres takes a curve outside, then misses a curve inside middle, pops it near home, caught by Murphy in foul territory, 1 down. I suppose I should have broken the sentence into two. I thought the Yankees had a better chance challenging that the fielder was in Volpe's baseline rather than that Volpe was safe, which was obvious to me that he was not. I was simply indicating when the contact was made with Volpe's foot during the play, right before the tag, simply in term of chronology. Obstruction is not reviewable...which I find odd because the home plate collision rule (which is basically spicy obstruction) is reviewable. There is a clear case for obstruction on the play. While the fielder is allowed to block the bag with the ball and he's also allowed to move into the runner's path to field the ball, it's the initial position of the fielder that is important. The fielder had his foot in front of the bag without the ball and it impeded Volpe's ability to slide and indeed altered his slide. This should have been called obstruction based on the MLB 2024 umpire's point of emphasis letter distributed to teams prior to the season.

Arcia made a heads-up play. It wasn't even a good throw by Arcia and Volpe was still easily out, with the best hitter in the game up next. It was awful base running.
