Yanks get Holmes an inning of work down by 2.
Riley takes a Sinker high, called a change by Gameday. Weird. Misses a slider on the corner low/away, 1-1 Takes a slider in the zone low/away, 1-2 Slider down the middle, fouled. Another sinker way up and in 2-2 Slider on the corner away, fouled Sinker well low in the middle, swung over, K, 1 down

Murphy takes a slide down the middle, 0-1 Misses a sinker diving inside and bit up, 0-2 Slider on the outer 3rd, waist high, fouled Another slider a bit above the last one, fouled off Slider backs way up and in, taken, 1-2 Tries to hit the low outside corner with a tailing sinker but misses, 2-2 Bad slider above the middle of the zone, pulled foul off 3rd. Tries to spoil a slider well out of the zone low/away, misses clean for the K, 2 down.

don't recall girardi's comment but the play was right in front of volpe. no way should he have run. The ball was behind him, not in front of him. If the ball was hit in front of him between him and third, then I would agree. The depth at which Arcia was playing just happened to give him a great lane to make the throw. The 3B has a right to field the throw, which put him in the baseline to do so. Was the risk worth the reward for Volpe? A bad throw and he scores, but the throw was on target. Volpe is fast, but no one is fast enough to be safe on that play. The key wax the logical assumption that the throw would go to first. Logic doesn’t always apply…

Duvall takes a sinker just above middle, 0-1 Chases the bad slider low/away, 0-2. Must've been guessing sinker. Slider bounced outside, he checks, the first base ump says no swing. The side view says marginal, but it looked like he went. 1-2 Slider above middle, and Duvall misses it, hits a fliner to medium deep center, but Grisham just lopes back and catches, inning over.
Bottom 9, 3-1 Braves. Yanks will send Judge, Verdugo and Torres out to try to get 2 runs off of close Raisel Iglesias, who usually makes quick work of the Yanks.

Holmes would have struck out the side if the umpire at first wasn't napping.

Several feet is an exaggeration. And, Volpe was not standing on second base, he had taken a lead and the ball was hit behind him between Volpe and second base. When the ball is hit there, you are taught to take the base. Arcia made a heads-up play. It wasn't even a good throw by Arcia and Volpe was still easily out, with the best hitter in the game up next. It was awful base running. So, you were coached to look behind you as a baserunner and when the ball is hit between you and the bag behind you to wait to see it through the infield? Sorry, Chi, we are all perturbed with how the Yankees have been playing, but that is just not how base running is coached. Volpe reacted as soon as the ball was hit and took off, which is the rule of thumb on that play. We can say it was unfortunate that the ball was not hit more slowly, but it is a reaction play without the benefit of replay before making the decision. It may not have been successful, but to expect a baserunner to freeze in the middle of the baseline with the ball behind him and the base or automatically to initially head backwards to the bag when the ball is put in play is just is not done.

Judge...1st pitch sinker down the middle, thigh high, lined to right of center, but Kelenic is there, 1 down. Hit hard, but in the wrong spot.

FB hits the outside corner below the waist, 0-1 Sinker misses low/away 1-1 Change low on the inner half, chased and fouled off of Murphy, 1-2 Change tails out of the zone low/away, chases and misses, K, 2 down. Not looking great, here.

A bad habit to get into...losing series at home to good teams...too many bad memories of 2022.

1st pitch change is low, Torres tries to hammer it, swings over, 0-1 Slider into the drop the bat happy zone freezes Torres because he thinks it's a sinker or FB inside 0-2 Slider way outside and low, 1-2 FB well high over the middle, doesn't chase, 2-2 Change dives down and toward Torres, winds up above the knees in the middle, Torres out front, swings over it for the K. Game over. Yanks lose 3-1, lose their 3rd straight series to a good team. The drop back to 24 over .500 at 52-28, and the only reason they'll be in first place tomorrow is that the Astros are doing them a huge faver this weekend against the O's.
