I missed most of the game yesterday. Not being a jerk but can someone explain how a guy that doesn't play or run pull a hammy? It makes no sense. Stanton simply doesn't run that hard. In fact, he hardly runs as it is, so he is either extremely muscle bound in the legs, or he does stretch enough or something. So very weird.

Playing the name game...there have been 30 other Maxes in MLB history, and Fried, while a terrific pitcher, isn't even the best pitching Max of all-time. That honor goes to the still-active Max Scherzer, winner of 3 Cy Young Awards (5th all time in Cy Young "Shares"), over 200 games, and top 30 all-time in WHIP, hits per 9 innings, strikeouts, K/9 innings and 8th all-time in K/BB ratio. He's a first ballot Hall of Famer 5 years after he retires. Another Max who's a Hall of Famer, but not as valuable career-wise, is OF Max Carey, who led the NL in steals 10 times and is still 9th all-time at 738, and won a title with the Pirates in 1925. Perhaps the most beloved Max in the history of baseball is the Clown Prince of Baseball, Max Patkin, who for 50 years appeared in major league and minor league baseball stadiums all over the country putting on his comedy act pantomiming ballplayers, managers, coaches and umpiring doing their jobs, and other things as well. If you've ever seen the move Bull Durhan, you get to watch a little of Max doing his thing within the fictional movie universe of the real minor league team, the Durham Bulls.

Somewhere in the slow transit between 2d and home he tweaked it. He didn't seem to be moving very fast, but that's never stopped him from getting hurt before. He might've done it when he awkwardly returned to 2B on Rice's line drive out. maybe we'll hear but agree that's when it might have happened.

Opposing Fried is Nestor Cortes. He's struggled in some starts this year, especially on the road, but has pitched very well in his last 2 starts. On the season, he's 4-5 with an ERA of 3.36. In 16 starts, he's pitched 93 2/3 innings, allowing 85 hits, 36 runs, 35 earned, 12 HR, and 18 BB with 86 K. His WHIP this season is a strong 1.100. He's tied for the most games started in the majors with 16, is 9th in innings pitched in the AL, 10th in K/BB ratio and 7th in fewest BB per 9 innings. In his last start, he battled a tough Orioles lineup to a standstill, pitching 6 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 BB and striking out 6. He got the only win for the Yanks in the series.
Nestor has been in the majors for parts of 7 seasons, and has pitched in 120 games, starting 72 of them, but has never faced the Braves before.

What I don't understand is why bring up an infielder??? Why not someone who can DH and hit the long ball. Maybe Spencer (sp?)

Yesterday, Marcus Stroman allowed a solo HR to the 3rd batter he faced, and a 2-run HR to the last batter he faced, but was brillant in between. The Yanks threatened almost all game long, scoring runs in five different innings, and got even with the Braves, 8-3. Oswaldo Cabrera had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI, and Aaron Judge knocked in 3 with a 2-run HR and a bases loaded walk.
In other AL East action...The Rays tried to rally in the 9th against ex-Yankee Aroldis Chapman, and got the tying run to 2nd with 2 outs on a RBI double, but Chapman got Isaac Paredes to ground out to short to earn his 2nd save and rookie phenom Jared Jones his 5th win. Oneil Cruz hit his 10th HR for the Pirates. The Red Sox fell behind 3-0, but got a run in the 5th, another in the 6th, and 2 more in the 8th, and Kenley Jansen closed it out in the 9th for his 14th save. Jansen needed a brilliant, HR-robbing catch by CF Jarren Duran off of Stuart Fairchild with one out in the 9th to get it done. The Jays made a game of it for 2 1/2 innings, tied 2-2, but the Guardians got 2 in the 3rd and added tack-on runs in the 5th and 6th, and won 6-2, winning the series. Ben Lively gave up 2 runs in 5 2/3 innings for his 7th win, Emannuel Clase got his league-leading 23rd save. The biggest news of the day in the East was the "dog that didn't bark". The Astros got an early 3-1 lead and tacked on runs in the 5th and 8th, and for once, the Orioles...did...nothing. No rallies, not even a serious attempt at a rally. Ronel Blanco, now the AL leader in fewest H/9 innings, held them to 4 hits, 1 solo HR and 3 BB in 7 innings for his 8th win, and Ryan Pressly and Josh Hader each threw a 1-2-3 inning, while striking out 3 between them, and the O's lost their 2nd straight, 5-1. OF Chas McCormick accounted for the two tack-on runs, with solo HRs.
The Yanks began play today up 1 1/2 up on the O's, 10 ahead of the Red Sox, 14 up on the Rays, and 15 1/2 up on the Jays.

Elsewhere in the AL East today: The Rays try to win the series from the Pirates at the same time as the Yankees game. Aaron Civale (2-5, 5.42 ERA ) pitches for Tampa, rookie phenom Paul Skenes (4-0, 2.29 ERA) throws for Pittsburgh; the Rays have their work cut out for them in that one. About 5 minutes later, the Red Sox try to win their series against the Reds in Cincinnati. It's a bullpen game for the Sox, reliever Zack Kelly (2-1, 1.75 ERA) "opens" his 2nd game for Boston, breakthrough lefty Nick Lodolo (8-2, 2.76 ERA) goes for the Reds. At the same time as that game, the Guardians try to complete a sweep of the Jays in Cleveland. Yusei Kikuchi (4-6, 3.65 ERA) starts for Toronto, league leader in most walks Triston McKenzie (3-4, 4.48 ERA) goes for the Guardians. About 1/2 hour after that one begins, the O's try to salvage one game from the Astros in Houston. Albert Suarez (3-1, 2.05 ERA), who the Yanks knocked out early in his last start, throws for Baltimore, and Framber Valdez (5-3, 3.91) starts for Houston.
And at 1:37 or so at the Stadium, it's Fried vs. Cortes. I'll do The Sunday Standingsâ„¢ as we go along the first 2-3 innings as usual See you then.

I forgot to mention it in the "scouting report" part of Fried's repetoire, but his curve is listed as having average horizontal break, 10 inchess of horizontal break, but elite vertical break 67 inches of drop, 5.4 inches above average, 29th best among 202 listed MLB pitches.

What I don't understand is why bring up an infielder??? Why not someone who can DH and hit the long ball. Maybe Spencer (sp?) Peraza only supposed to be here today. They are looking for a new bat, which, as Anthony just posted, may be JD Davis.

Swings over a slider going just outside near the bottom Pitches him backwards. FB below/outside middle, thinks its a slider going outside but it's a FB that stays right there for a ꓘ, 1 down.
