David Peterson starts the first game of the two-game series at Citifield. Drafted with the 20th pick of the 1st round in 2017, he worked his way to the majors in 2020, skipping AAA after a so-so season at AA. He was in the Mets rotation for most of COVID-shortened season, going 6-2 with a 3.44 ERA in 9 starts and one relief appearance, with one brief stay on the IL for "shoulder fatigue". He started the 2021 season in the rotation, and made 15 poor starts before going on the IL in early August for the rest of the season with an oblique strain. He opened 2022 as the team's 5th starter, but his performance was inconsistent, mixing good games with bad ones. He had another stay on the IL in May, and when he gave up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning against the Cubs in mid-September, with the Mets trying desperately hold off a furious charge from the Braves, they took Peterson out of the rotation, while they still held a 1/2 game lead. In 2023, he was back in the rotation, but did so poorly in his first 11 starts he was sent to the pen. After 6 good games there, they put him back into the roation in early August and he did better in last 10 starts with an ERA of 3.88, but they had him on a very short leash; he was pulled before the 5th inning in 6 of the 10 starts.
At the end of the season, the team learned that Peterson had a torn hip labrum. The ensuing surgery required a rehab of 5 1/2 months, so the Mets sent him to Hi-A in late April where he made 3 short rehab starts. He then made one good start at AA and one goed and one so-so start at AAA. The Mets finally deemed him ready, and called him up to start against the Dodgers in late May. So far, he's done OK in 4 starts, 3-1 with a 3.97 ERA, and has benefited from their greatly impoved offense; the Mets have scored 30 runs in his last 3 starts, all wins. In 22 2/3 innings, he's allowed 24 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, 2 HR, 8 BB and has struck out 12. His WHIP this season is a subpar 1.412.
This is Peterson's 3rd game against the Yanks and his 2nd start. In a very small number of innings, he hasn't been very effective. In a start against the Yanks at Citifield in 2020, he lasted just 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs, but got a no-decision when Amed Rosario hit a walkoff 2-run HR to beat the Yanks, 4-3. He came in as a set-up man in the 8th inning of another game at Citifield, but blew a save, giving up a 2-run HR to Gleyber Torres that tied the game at 2. The Mets also won that one, this time on a walkoff single by Starling Marte off of Clay Holmes. It's just 21 batters, but the Yankee team quadruple slash line against Peterson is .294/.429/.471/.899.
Repertoire: A tall, burly 6-6, 240 lefty, Peterson throw five pitches: both fastballs, slider, change and curve. He gets above-average drop on the offspeed pitches, but below-average "rise" on his 4-seamer. He also gets less horizontal break on the curve, which is why uses it about once an inning. He gets below-average spin on the FB and the curve, but because his extension has been among the best in the game in all five of his major league seasons (94th percentile or higher in all five of his seasons in the majors), hitters are sometimes a bit late reacting. The pitch mix this season through 4 starts: Sinker averaging 92 about 31% of the time, 4-seamer 93 about 24%, slider 86 about 22%, change 84-5 about 16%, and the curve 79 about 7%.

Playing the name game...way, way too many Davids...nearly 100 Daves, Davids or Daveys in MLB history. The greatest of them is probably (ugh) David Ortiz, who just destroyed the Yankees with the Red Sox for 14 years on his way to becoming the first player known to have failed a PED test and still get elected to the Hall of Fame. Among the non-PED-using players, the best player is almost certainly Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, who was a vastly more valuable defenive player, and a great hitter, but not the great clutch hitter Ortiz was...with the enormous exception of his last at bat of the 1992 season, a 2-run double in the top of the 11th that provided the winning runs in game 6, sending the Blue Jays to the title. Among Yankee fans, there have been several very popular Daves...David Wells, David Robertson, David John LeMahieu, for one part of one season, David Justice, Dave Righetti, the above-mentioned Winfield, even Dave "LaLob" LaRoche. But the favorite David of Yankees fans is now multi ring-winner and brilliant YES pitching analyst, David Cone, who, appropriately enough, won more games with the Mets than he did with any of the other four teams he pitched for, but achieved his greatest fame and glory with the Yankees "dynasty" from 1995-2000.

The Yanks send the reigning Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole out for his 2nd start since completing his rehab after suffeing inflammation and edema of his pitching elbow late in spring training. He did OK his first start against the O's allowing just 1 run in 4 innings before leaving the game after allowing a leadoff walk in the 5th that came around to score after Marinaccio came in and promptly gave up a two-run HR to Urias, saddling Cole with a 4.50 ERA coming into this game. He gave up 3 hits, and 1 BB while striking out 5. He'll try to win the AND get his pitchcount up to about 80 this time out.
Cole will be making his 8th start against the Mets in his career, and they've treated him roughly: 2-2 with an ERA of 5.89. In 36 2/3 innings, he's allowed 47 hits, 25 runs, 24 earned, 7 HR, 12 BB and struck out 42. His WHIP against the Mets is a miserable 1.609, and their team quadruple slash line against him is .311/.366/.530/.896. His last start vs. the Mets was a good one, though; 6 innings of 4 hit 1-run ball with 1 BB and 8 K, but the bullpen blew the 3-1 lead in the 7th, and Brandon Nimmo hit a walkoff single in the 10th for a 4-3 Mets win in mid-June last year at Citifield.

Yesterday, the Yanks had the day off.
In other AL East action...The Guardians got a solo HR by Jose Ramirez leading off the 6th to break a 2-2 tie, and starter Tanner Bibbee and three relievers shut down the Orioles on just a walk to Santander over the last 4 innings to hold on to win, 3-2. It was up to Scott Barlow to nail down the win after usual closer Emmanual Clase had pitched 2 days in a row and 4 of the last 5, and he got it done, striking out Westburg, Mullins and a pinch-hitting Mountcastle in a 1-2-3 9th. The loss is the O's 4th straight after winning 18 of 24. The Red Sox keep coming hard, rallying from a 6-2 deficit against the Blue Jays with a 4-run rally in the 8th, and walking it off in the 9th on a RBI single by Jarren Duran scoring Ceddanne Rafaela with nobody out. Both Duran and Devers had 3 hits, and Devers hit his 15th HR of the season. The Sox have now won 3 in a row and 8 of 9. The Rays rallied from a 3-1 deficit against the Mariners with 3 in the 8th on an RBI double by Ben Rortvedt and a 2-run single by Jose Siri. Rays closere Pete Fairbanks slammed the door with a 1-2-3 9th with 2 K's. With their comeback win, the Rays have now won 5 of 6 after losing 8 of 11.
The Yanks began play today up 2 on the O's, 8 1/2 up on the Red Sox (they were 14 games behind just two weeks ago), 12 1/2 ahead of the Rays, and 16 ahead of the last place Jays.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, the O's and Guardians play the middle game of their series in Camden Yards at 6:35 pm; the slightly better Logan Allen (8-3, 5.23 ERA) starts for Cleveleand, Cole Irvin goes for the O's. Irvin is 6-3 with a 3.45 ERA after a very frustrating no-decision against the Yanks, He couldn't make through the 5th, but the O's were on their way to a 17-5 rout. That game is already underway, and the O's have a 2-1 lead in the top of the 2nd. The Sox and Jays play the 2nd of 4 games of their series at Fenway. Brayan Bello, 7-4 with an ERA of 4.83, tries to make it 2 wins in a row against the Jays, while Kevin Gausman, 5-6 with a 4.24 ERA tries for his first win since his 5-hit shutout against the A's 2 1/2 weeks ago. That game gets underway about the same time as the Yankees-Mets, maybe a couple of minutes earlier. The Rays play the middle game of their series against the Mariners in the WeirdDomeâ„¢ at 6:50 pm. Luis Castillo (6-8, 3.63 ERA) goes for Seattle; he's been hit pretty hard in 2 of his last 3 starts. Zack Littell (2-5, 4.20 ERA) throws for the Rays; he's still trying for his first win since May 11th, when he beat (who else?) the Yankees. That game is underway, and is 0-0, top 1st.
And at 7:10 at Citifield on YES (and SNY, for turncoats), it's Peterson vs. Cole.
And that's it for the pre-game boob-boop-a-doop. Game time in a little over 15 minutes from now.

The Guardians just got a 2-run double from Gabriel Arias, and have taken the lead back from the O's, 3-2, top 2nd. Looks like a long night for pitchers in Camden Yards tonight.

Jays and Sox are underway. Rays have a 1-0 lead on the Mariners in the 1st, and the O's just tied it at 3 in the 2nd on a RBI single by McCann.

Soto... Pitch clock violation by Pterson gets Soto ahead on the count. Sinker inside 4-5 inches, 2-0 Sinker even further inside, 3-0 Soto shocks the world, defies common sense, square to BUNT ON 3-0, bunts foul, 3-1. Sinker at 96 near the middle of the plate, taken, 3-2 Slider misses low, away, ball 4.
