Hispanic players are often labeled as lazy. They said it about Cano. Hell, they used to say it about Roberto Clemente. I'm not Torre's biggest fan, but don't think he's lazy. I believe it's killing him inside and that has to have an effect. It's a good thing he wasn't in Yankee Stadium last night. He's starting to get that "Gary Sanchez look" and that's not good.
I also think Boone putting him in the four-hole last night was downright stupid. That had to add to the pressure he's under. I know it may sound crazy, but I actually would have played Rice at first, JD at DH and let one of them hit fourth. Rice is a good contact hitter and JD is at least an average major league hitter. Torres is neither of those now.
I also felt Davis could have batted fourth, though he made 4 outs in 3 PA last night and it would have been quite a debut for him batting fourth isn’t what it used to be now, though. The “clean up” hitter is now the #3 guy…. Looking up and down the roster, we don’t have a legit #4…we need one..
we had one - stanton. there wasn't a low & outside slider that he didn't like and sure, he could have the ugliest ABs but he was legit presence in the middle of that lineup - 18 HRs and 45 RBI. opposing teams respected him and he's always a threat. now there's absolutely no one for that slot. they don't grow on trees. from someone's who's not a fan, he will be missed.
and yeah guess boone could have put rice or davis in the 4 slot but understand the reasons he didn't. gleyber didn't work but can't kill boone for it. no one else screaming to be put there. as i said until some of the veterans (dugo, gleyber, DJ) start hitting, this lineup is gonna be very weak from 4-9. there's 3 guys doing any of the lifting.
