We take a dive and the game threads are left to the Old Man! Save us, Jeep! I hope we push these punks around. I’m getting tired of watching a team of slumpers…

I know we are not supposed to talk Politics but the Debate is must watch TV tonight. It will be interesting to see who screws up the most. Maybe it will pass as an SNL skit.

The Blue Jays come into this series nearly as cold as the Yanks. They've been floundering near the bottom of the East since late April, and have been under .500 and no higher than 4th and since getting losing the last 3 games of a 4-game series vs. KC in the last week of the month. Their game was suspended after one inning last night, and they won the game on Tuesday, but they'd lost 7 in a row before that. They're currently 7 games under .500 at 36-43 and sit 5th in the East, 14 1/2 games behind the Yanks. The Jays are 24-34 since they opened the season at 12-9. Against the Yanks, they lost 2 of 3 at the Stadium in the 2nd week of the season, but returned the favor by taking 2 of 3 in Toronto the week after. The games have been mostly close, the Yanks have outscored the Jays in the 6 games, but just 28-26. For games 2, 3 and 4, the Jays have lined up all three starters they always pitch against the Yanks, the three who started both of the previous series: Kikuchi, Bassitt and Gausman. All 3 seem to pitch nothing short of very well against the Yanks, at least when healthy.

But in the first game, the Jays will start Jose Berrios, who the Yanks have pummelled from time to time. The Twins drafted Berrios with the 32nd pick of the 1st round in 2012. He advanced through the sytem somewhat slowly; he pitched at least pretty well at every level, and very well at AA/AAA in 2015. He was top 30 in all three major prospect lists in the offseason of 2015-16. When 2016 started, he opened the season with 3 excellent starts in AAA, so the Twins called him up. He was hit hard in 4 starts, so they sent him back to AAA, where he pitched very well in 13 more starts. They called him back to the majors, and again, he got knocked around for 5 starts. Back to AAA he went, he made one good start there and they called him back up to be in the rotations for Sepember. He pitched poorly yet again, but not as horribly as he did before. For the season, he was 3-7 with an ERA over 8.00 in 14 starts in the majors. They sent him back to AAA for 6 brilliant starts at the start of 2017, and they called him up for good, going 14-8 that season with a 3.88 ERA. He relieved Ervin Santana in the 3rd inning of the Wild Card game against the Yanks, but they pummeled Berrios as well and he took the loss.
The next two seasons, he pitched well enough to make the AL All-Star team, but in both of then, his performance declined in the 2nd half. He had a so-so season in the shortened 2020 COVID year, but got off to a good start again in 2021. At this point he was reaching his last two arbitration years, and with the Twins 17 games under and 14 1/2 games behind in the Wild Card chase with 7 teams between them and a playoff spot, they traded Berrios to the Blue Jays for Austin Martin and Simeon Woods-Richardson, both of who made the majors this season. Woods-Richardson has pitched well for the Twins in 12 starts so far. The Jays missed the playoffs in 2021 even though Berrios pitched pretty well for them, but in 2022, he had an awful season, going 12-7, but with an ERA of 5.23 and he led the AL in both hits allowed and earned runs allowed. He came back last year with a solid season, going 11-12 with a 3.65 ERA. The Jays made the playoffs, and facing elimination down 1-0 going into game 2 of the Wild Card series, Berrios started. Sonny Gray had shut down the Twins for 4 innings, so when Berrios gave up a leadoff walk, Baldelli pulled him from a 0-0 game to bring in Kikuchi. The move backfired; Kikuchi gave up two hits and a walk for 2 runs, the only runs of the game, and the Jays' season was over.
This year, Berrios got off to his usual fast start. After 7 games, he was 2-4 with a 1.44 ERA. An 8-run blowup vs. the Phillies put an end to that hot run, but he ran off 6 more good starts, going 1-2 with an ERA just over 3.00. He's been hit pretty hard his last two starts, both against the Guardians, 4 runs in 6 innings in a 6-5 Twins win, 5 runs in 5 innings in a 6-3 loss. On the season, Berrios is 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA. In 16 starts, he's pitched 97 innings, allowing 87 hits, 37 runs, all earned, 23 walks and struck out 68. The low K rate is one of the two flaws in his game; the other is a somewhat high HR rate, 17 in those 97 innings.
The Yanks have hit Berrios well in two postseason starts. One was the Wild Card game in 2017, the other was game 1 of the 2019 ALDS; he left after 4 innings, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned. The Yanks eventually beat up on the Twins' pen and won 10-4, on their way to another sweep of the Twins in the playoffs. In the regular season, it hasn't gone any better for Berrios against the Yanks. In 12 starts, he's 3-7 with a 5.21 ERA. In 67 1/3 innings, he's allowed 71 hits, 40 runs, 39 earned, 9 HR, and 21 BB with 80 K's. His regular season WHIP against them is a sub-par 1.352, and the Yankees' quadruple slash line against him is .263/.328/.432/.760. It hasn't gotten any better with the Jays. In 9 starts over the last 2 1/2 seasons, Berrios is 2-5 with an ERA of 5.48 vs. the Yanks. Last year he started 3 times against the Yanks and lost all three: 3 runs in 6 2/3 in a 4-2 loss in Toronto in May, 4 runs in 5 2/3 in a 5-3 loss at the Stadium in late September, and 4 runs in 6 innings in a 6-0 loss in Toronto 6 days after that.
Repertoire: Berrios is a 5-pitch righty: fastball, sinker, slurve, change and cutter. The movement on most of his pitches is fairly close to league average; his sinker has less drop than average, and his seldom used cutter has more drop and a lot less glove side break than average. By run values, the sinker and change are good plusses, the other three are small minuses. Over his 9-year career, his FB velo has gone from above average to below average. His FB spin rate has gone from well below average to a little below average, and his extension has gone from well above average to nearly league average. In terms of batted balls, he's almost dead MLB average in GB%, LD%, FB%, solid contact, weak contact and barrel percentage. His pitch mix up to this point in the season: Sinker 94-5, about 37 % of the time, slurve 83 about 31%, fastball averaging 94 about 16%, change 84 also about 16%, and a cutter 91-2 about 2-3 times a game.

Playing the name game...Can't even make an accurate guess at the number of Joses in MLB history, too many Josephs mixed into the search for "Jose", but well over 100 at this point. Many All-Stars named Jose, but none of them are in the Hall of Fame. Yet (see below). Altuve, Abreu and Canseco have won an MVP Award each. Cards and Astros outfielder Jose Cruz is the current All-Time leader in "Jose bWAR" (few remember Cruz also remember his 20th and final season in MLB was 88 poor at bats for the Yankees in 1988); he's about to be passed by both Altuve and Ramirez. Both probably get past him by the end of the next season. They'll be fighting it out for the greatest Jose for years to come, with Altuve having the upper hand because of the Astros' post-season successs. Jose is also the better bet to make the Hall of Fame, both because of the post-season record and the fact that The Favoite Toy gives him a 19% chance of getting to 3,000 hits, which would make Altuve a lock for the Hall. Altuve also scores better than Ramirez on the 4 Bill James' Hall of Fame systems, and on the Jaffee JAWS system as well, but Altuve has 3 more years in the majors, and some of those systems depend on career accumulations. Of Ramirez' top 10 stat comps through his current age, only one, Scott Rolen, is in the Hall. Of Altuve's top 10 comps through age 33, five are in there. The Jays' Berrios is the only one of those in MLB history.

The Yanks send Carlos Rodon out to open the series against the Jays. He was having an excellent season up until two starts ago, but the Red Sox and Braves caught him with no command and very little stuff and both beat him like a drum in those starts. In 16 games this season, he's 9-4 with a 3.86 ERA. In 88 2/3 innings, he's allowed 82 hits, 40 runs, 38 earned, 14 HR, 25 BB and struck out just 84. His WHIP has blown up to a slightly better than average 1.207. It appeared he was figuring out how to pitch with a 4 pitch arsenal and somewhat diminished stuff, but the last two disasters have thrown everything up in the air again.
Rodon has made 5 starts against the Jays in his career, and is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA. In 27 1/3 innings, he's allowed 27 hits, 10 runs, all earned, 2 HR, 10 BB and K'd 30. His WHIP against them is a sub-par 1.352, and the Jays' team quadruple slash line against Rodon is .236/.349/.403/.752. He didn't start against them in the early series at the Stadium, but he did make a start the following week in Toronto and pitched quite poorly. Fighting his command all day, Rodon gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, all earned, with 2 HR, 4 BB and 5 K's, and took the loss in a 5-4 Jays win.

Yesterday, Luis Gil struggled again, and the Mets punished him. It wasn't as bad as the beating the O's game him, but it was bad enough: 5 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 BB, and a HR, while striking out just 2. His ERA rose again, this time to 3.15. In his last 4 starts, he's now 1-3 with an ERA of 8.27. The Yanks again blew multiple chances early while the game was close, killing three separate rallies in the first 4 innings on double play grounders, 2 by Verdugo. The Yankees' offense was limited to a 2-run HR by Judge in the 6th when they were already down 6-0, and the Mets continued to pound the weak sisters in the bullpen, wiping the Yanks out, 12-2. The loss was the Yanks 3rd in a row and 9th in their last 12 games. The series loss was their 4th in a row. They dropped to 22 games over .500 at 52-30, and they hadn't been as few as 22 games over since June 1st.
In other AL East action...The O's got a run in the 7th and another in the 8th to break a 2-2 tie, also breaking their 5-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Guardians. Cedric Mullins' 8th HR in the 7th gave the O's the lead for good and Ryan O'Hearn's 10th HR in the 8th added insurance. Grayson Rodiguez got his 9th win and Craig Kimbrel stuck out the side in the 9th around a walk to earn his 17th save. Cal Raleigh hit a 3-run HR in the 6th to give the Mariners a 3-1 lead and George Kirby went 6 strong innings of 1-run ball, and the M's salvaged the 3rd game of the series in Tampa, 5-2. The Red Sox and Jays got their series finale going in Fenway, but then the rains came and wouldn't leave, causing the game to be suspended. It will likely be resumed when the Jays make their final scheduled trip to Boston in late August.
The Yanks begin play today up 1 game on the O's, 8 ahead of the Red Sox, 11 1/2 ahead of the Rays, and 14 1/2 ahead of the last place Jays.
Elsewhere in the AL East today, The Rangers go into Baltimore to start a 4-game series at Camden Yards at 6:35 pm. Jon Gray (3-3, 3.03 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Texas. Gray bounced back from a savage beating at the hands of the Mets two starts ago with 6 innings of shutout ball against the Royals for his 3rd win last time out. O's ace Corbin Burnes (8-3, 2.35 ERA) will oppose Gray, looking to bounceback from a subpar outing against the Astros in a 5-1 loss. The Red Sox and Rays have today off.
And, at 7:07 pm at the Rodgers Centre, it's Rodon vs. Berrios.
